A good book for a first insight in banks' financial analysis.......2004-09-24

I bought this book 3 years ago, when I started by PhD. At that time I knew nothing about banks' financial statements analysis and the book consequently become as it says a "Guide", in my early steps in the topic. I still go back from time to time to re-read some issues. Thus, I would recommend the book to those interesting in getting a first insight into banks' financial analysis. They will find the first 14 chapters quite useful. Chapters 15-27 examine other issues, such as the environment, distressed banks in Asia, the rating industry among others. How useful the later can be highly depends on what the reader is looking for.

BEWARE.......2004-06-25

The content of the Bank Credit Analysis Handbook is actually quite good. However, it is glaringly apparent that NO ONE proofread the manuscript. There are errors on almost every other page: missing punctuation (incuding periods), the same phrase back-to-back, incorrect formulas, formulas described one way, and then shown in a way nowhere close to the description. I have an MBA, and have read my share of textbooks and manuals, and I have NEVER come across one as sloppily edited as this one.

The content of the book is good, but at $105 one would think someone would have proofread the manuscript before it was published.

A Creditable Analysis.......2001-10-29

Mr. Golin has written an easily readable and comprehensive guide to an obscure subject. He assumes only a general knowledge of finance and takes the user step-by-step through the analysis of a bank's financial statements, an approach that probably makes this book as useful to equity analysts as it should be to credit analysts of financial institutions. He has a rare perspective, that of an american lawyer (from Harvard Law School) who has grappled with investment analysis of corporations in south east Asia. As a result, many of the examples in the long section on distressed banks are drawn from the Asian economic crisis. Nevertheless the scope of the work is global. He deals with the continuing development of world-wide bank regulation and the role and function of rating agencies. Last, but not least, the appendices contain useful definitions and a good bibliography. For analysts of finanical institutions his book should be a 'strong buy'.

The Safety Standard. Period........2004-07-03

Thirty years ago I met the predecessor to this volume. Sounds like a long time? I have made it those 30 years because of what I learned from this book.

If you are a chemistry student (I was a freshman when I encountered this book) then you need to read this book before you start working with your reagents.

If you are employed in a field where you work in a laboratory or come into contact with laboratory materials (albeit - it is aimed at chemical labs and not specifically at bioscience labs) then you need to read about the materials you could be exposed to, BEFORE you are exposed.

If you are a medical professional - then you already have one.

If you are a legal professional and you deal with toxic torts: you need one.

Concise, clear and accessible by any high school grad. If you work with chemicals - you need this book.

I give it a four star--not the most page turner of a book but great chapters. I read about one every month or so, not a problem for I like to read what I'm in the mood for! Never knew that rocks were so fluid, changeable and sort of the "chemistry" of what is involved. Mr. Trefil appreciates and cares about his subject, his spirt comes through and he respects his readers. I hope he updates this sometime.....

HILARIOUS!!.......2002-07-16

If people don't think this book is one of the funniest they've ever read, they're dead. There are so many things in the book that I could relate to. Basically the stories are about this group of teenage friends and the stupid things they do as they're growing up. A lot of what they do is really immature (like building a sawed-off shotgun, racing to McDonald's for hotcakes, and driving golf balls at night into an abandoned factory), but I think I understand what the author was trying to do--I think he was trying to show how foolish and immature guys can be. God knows I had more than my share of boyfriends in high school and college who were like these guys. It was funny and really clever in places. I highly recommend it to anyone that needs a laugh.

Best for readers who want something light.......2002-07-16

I met the author earlier this summer in Missoula, and he told me about his books. I told him I wasn't interested in reading anything literary, that I just wanted somethng entertaining. Well, that's what this collection of stories is: breezy entertainment. None of the book is going to change your life, but there are a couple stories in there like "After the Wake" and the title story that make you think.

The previous reviewer clearly was expecting a more serious book. To be fair, I think her review was way over the top. To say that it's the worst book she's ever read shows pretty clearly that she hasn't read much (or bought many books that she reviews, for that matter), and to say that her second grade son writes better is ridiculous. The stories, like them or not, are clear, funny, and technically very well written. Orcutt definitely needs to work on developing character emotions in his work, but as someone who reads a lot of thrillers, I can say that he's not the only one missing emotion in his writing.

Again, this book of stories isn't going to change your life, but if you want something that's just pure escapism, buy it.

Horrible!!!!.......2002-06-13

A friend gave me this to read when I was preparing to leave her house on a long plane flight. She got the book from a friend of the author. I can say, without hesitation, that this has to be one of the worst books ever put into print. I read about 1/4 of it and would have rather jumped out of the plane at 35,000 feet than finished it. It is THAT bad. Who publishes this drivel?? If they made the decision that this was good enough to publish I would hate to see the books that they did not deem too be good enough!!!! Life is too short to waste reading this junk! I have a second grade son who writes with more depth and thoughtfulness.

Entertaining all the way through.......2002-02-14

I was introduced to the works of Mr. Orcutt by one of my students who found his first novel on Xlibris.com. I have to admit that I was initially quite skeptical because many of the works published by 'on-demand' publishers like Xlibris--especially the fiction--tend to be trite and poorly written.

Not so with Mr. Orcutt's work. His first novel, 'Nick Chase's Great Escape,' is a page-turner in the best sense of the term, and he has followed up in 'I Hope You Boys Know What You're Doing' with a marvelous set of short stories (and a few poems that are so-so) that follow the development of some hapless 'boys' from their pre-teen years into adulthood.

The central character, as well as most of the peripheral characters, are really anti-heroes, but I found myself rooting for them just the same. Both are fun, smoothly written reads. I hope to see more from him in the future.

Having read both "I Hope You Boys Know What You're Doing" and Mr. Orcutt's first novel "Nick Chase's Great Escape," I can say without fear of contradiction that he has avoided the dreaded "sophomore jinx."

"I Hope You Boys Know What You're Doing" is a stellar offering of short and medium-length stories and a few short poems, which showcase Chris Orcutt's writing talents. A superb weaver of a good 'yarn', Orcutt's character and plot development are also very good, and the pages seem to fly by.

There's a little something in here for everyone, and it makes for a very enjoyable and satisfying read.

So...buy it and read it. You won't regret it.
