Excellent Cost Management Tool.......2006-10-03

The author did a good job of coming up with a user friendly book on Activity-Based Costing (ABC). ABC is critical in alerting managers of the major and subsidiary drivers of costs. Many companies, large and small, have benefited from employing ABC techniques.

The book is readable by both the expert and novice in accounting. The novice will benefit from the detailed introduction into accounting systems and the concept of ABC. The author then methodically explains how costs can be allocated to products and services.

Those managers in the manufacturing industry will benefit the most as the book has a manufacturing bias, although the author did his best to also make the book relevant to those in the service industry. The various case studies and practical examples reinforce the message and help the reader in consolidating the understanding of ABC.

This is a recommended book that helps the reader to learn and comprehend the important technique of ABC that should enable companies to eliminate hidden costs and be more efficient and competitive.

Using ABC to think about your business.......2000-04-02

O'Guin takes a manufacturing perspective in his lucid explanation of activity based-costing, a management planning tool aimed at discovering what your true costs are by essentially assigning overhead costs to products and customers. The idea is that the more you know about your costs, the better able to compete. The book is ideal for consultants who need a quick read on the process, or managers thinking of implementing the system and require some overall familairity.

He does not totally ignore service businesses either. Very ably, he shows the theoretical underpinnings behind ABC, and points to many examples of "big league" companies, like GE and Hewlett-Packard that have used this method in order to understand the primary and secondary cost drivers.

The first third of the book mixes a history lesson on traditional accounting system with an introduction to ABC. The intro seems a little bit long, and I found myself wishing that he would get to the design and implementation of the system (which is the reason I was reading the book-part of a redesign consulting contract).

The author rarely speaks down to his audience. In fact, unlike many systems type books I have read in the last few years, O'Guin is able to continually build on what is presented previously in the book without endless looping. He assumes a level of intelligence and interest which you will find yourself thanking him for when you are trying to figure out how to allocate the cost of the bolt to the large customer shipping cost for the new product line 3rd shift, or some such permutation.

The second half of the book gets more into the nuts and bolts, so to speak, and describes how ABC might work in a typical firm. I imagine many of the readers will be of the small manufacturing bent, and this book really answers most of the questions you would have. The next step would probably be to talk to someone that has actually implemented the system.

The final third of the book deals with the strategic outlook for American industry and how ABC can be used as a management tool to increase competitiveness. The author never gets too preachy and mixes a good deal of his opinions with common sense and practical examples. Finally, the Appendix consolidates much of what he has been saying into charts and summations. In addition, the book provides the sources much reference material - something for every taste.

ABC is a system that may seem like learning a foreign language to the initiate. O'Guin does an excellent job of providing the basics. He gets you up to speed quickly and leaves you with enough information to have a basic understanding of ABC and its implementation. Highly recommended.

Good information, bad organization.......2004-02-25

I had to use this book as a text for a purchasing course I took and was frustrated to no end by its lack of organization. The different sections often repeat and even contradict themselves, although this improves substantially when you get to the chapters in the second half of the book on specific categories of items to be purchased. Each chapter is followed by a list of 30-40 "important words and concepts," most of which aren't defined or explained in the chapter but just mentioned in passing. Some of them aren't even mentioned in the chapter, and many of them appear on two or three different lists. The index is so limited as to be next to useless, and there is no glossary. I found myself continuously referring to other books and internet resources to get the information I needed, not because it wasn't in the book, but because I couldn't *find* it.

That said, the content of the book is thorough and well thought-out. Though I wouldn't recommend it as a textbook or desk reference, reading through it would give a novice buyer a good grounding in the principles of purchasing.

This textbook succinctly outlines and dicusses purchasing processes in the hospitality industry. It is therefore essential for any nonpurchasing agent who wants a comprehensive view of the purchasing function and activities to understand the management of a successful operation. The book has a lot of useful hands-on information and would be valuable to any person who will be assuming any purchasing related activities in the hospitality industry. As one who has studied hospitality management and worked in the industry, the detailed explanations are very precise and correct and very instructive. The book is recommended for nonpurchasing agents, but I recommend it for anyone who wants to understand one of managements' biggest headaches: purchasing.

As in the rest of the world, the telecommunications industry in the Netherlands has been subject to drastic change over the last few years. By necessity, the same applies to its regulation. The present Dutch Telecommunications Act dates from 1988, when competitive provision of infrastructure and services was almost non-existent. Since then, technological developments and a general tendency towards liberalisation have had a profound impact on the market structure. On 15 July 1996, a major amendment to the Dutch Telecommunications Act introduced virtually unlimited competition in the provision of fixed telecommunication infrastructure. In addition, almost all telecommunication services, with the exception of public voice telephony, were liberalised. Ready For Superior Fun and Fantasy?.......2001-08-20

Are you all set for a comic romp which the best British authors deliver? "St. Brodag's Isle" is a humorous novel, but one with an edge. Nothing is sacrosanct-- except perhaps a bow to sainthood. Or, perhaps not! Each chapter opens with yet another non-sequitur from St. Brodag, founder of this mythical British island, a rock lying somewhere in the North Sea. (The Saint's pearls of wisdom include: "Only the gulls know where the sea is.") So who will be "blessed" with a posting to this bleak island and given the pompus title of "British Ambassador?" Could there even be a more ridiculous bastion, of the former empire, where one might be dispatched? Simple answer: "No!" Yet, that is the fate which befalls the luckless hero, Philip Digby-Fischer. As though that were not demoralizing enough, this modern-day comic Job knows not what lurks in the hearts of the islanders. How many times can they disgrace him? More to the point: Why are certain inhabitants so dedicated to doing so? How many times can Philip be disgraced, yet maintain his dignity? How many times before his stiff upper lip, and natural humanity towards others, will finally crack? Through each disaster which befalls him is more hilarious than the one before, the reader will empathize with Digby-Fischer as he firmly keeps his demeanor and optimism intact. If you are ready for fun and fantasy, this is the novel for you. Suggestion: You might wish to have a bit of Celtic music, playing as you read. It will only enhance the wonderful atmosphere created by Andy Wash for "St. Brodag's Isle." If you are a fan of droll British humor, do yourself a favor and grab this book! St. Brodag's Isle is an episodic romp that just might be the sleeper of the year in it's genre. This is a premier book for the author and as such deserves all the attention it can garner. As British humor goes, there are few genuinely engaging books on the market right now that are contemporary but fortunately for us, St. Brodag's Isle is here to remind us that there will always be an England. Governor-by-appointment Phillip Digby-Fischer, Mayor Henry Geruish, and the other assorted residents of St. Brodag's (along with the rare Kittiwakes that have made the Island their home) will live cheerfully on in the reader's memory long after the last page has been read. Written in the spirit of P.G. Wodehouse, this is a book of subtle wit and charm that demands a sequel.
