It is often pointed out that "for every bad borrower, and for every failed project, there is also a culpable lender or investor." This observation is particularly apt for the debate now raging in the capital markets: should private bankers and investment managers bear a greater share of the costs when financial crises erupt in emerging economies? Critics who have analyzed the "plumbing" of the world's financial architecture have thus far devoted enormous attention to the demand side -structural weaknesses in emerging markets. They have excoriated the IMF for ineptitude and policy mistakes.

But the authors of this study argue that financial leaders of the G-10 nations (industrial nations that were hardly affected by the crises of 1997-98) owe a responsibility -- both to their own citizens and the emerging markets -- to take a far more vigilant stance. Dobson and Hufbauer criticize the supply side of world capital markets and ask how G-10 capital suppliers can reform their own financial systems to make the world safe for large-scale international capital flows. They draw a comprehensive picture of international finance through an extensive review of capital flows, the major financial players behind these flows, and the balance between costs and benefits of international capital movements. The authors analyze the implications of changing the rules of the game and recommend specific policy measures.

Conklin's thesis is that the tradition of modern legal positivism, beginning with Thomas Hobbes, postulated different senses of the invisible as the authorising origin of humanly posited laws. Conklin re-reads the tradition by privileging how the canons share a particular understanding of legal language as written. Leading philosophers who have espoused the tenets of the tradition have assumed that legal language is written and that the authorising origin of humanly posited rules/norms is inaccessible to the written legal language. Conklin's re-reading of the tradition teases out how each of these leading philosophers has postulated that the authorising origin of humanly posited laws is an unanalysable externality to the written language of the legal structure. As such, the authorising origin of posited rules/norms is inaccessible or invisible to their written language.
What is this authorising origin? Different forms include an originary author, an a priori concept, and an immediacy of bonding between person and laws. In each case the origin is unwritten in the sense of being inaccessible to the authoritative texts written by the officials of civil institutions of the sovereign state.
Conklin sets his thesis in the context of the legal theory of the polis and the pre-polis of Greek tribes. The author claims that the problem is that the tradition of legal positivism of a modern sovereign state excises the experiential, or bodily, meanings from the written language of the posited rules/norms, thereby forgetting the very pre-legal authorising origin of the posited norms that each philosopher admits as offering the finality that legal reasoning demands if it is to be authoritative.

Es especialmente bueno por la amplitud de su contenido, aborda de manera coherente y extendida el tema. Good Reference.......2001-07-26

Prescribed Burning for Brushland Management : The South Texas Example is a great reference tool for anyone interested in the mechanics, costs and benefits to prescribed burning on rangelands. Although this book is best suited for Texas, as this is where much of the study was conducted, it is a great reference tool to have on your shelf. The book goes into detail about the evolution of fire on rangelands, how it produced the landscape that our forefathers first set foot onto, and how to manage it for ecological and economical means. The first few chapters explains how fires actaully work, to give the manager a broader knowledge of what's actually going on. Guidelines on when to and when not to burn, such as seasonality, relative humdity, temperature, and topography are all taken into consideration. I have taken a Range Vegetation Manipulation class at Texas A&M University under the instruction of co-author W.T. Hamilton, where this very book was part of the required text and know first hand that he has many, many years of prescribed burning experience under his belt. He has worked with such organizations such as the King Ranch, The Texas Agricultural Extension Service, and Texas A&M University, to name a few, and is pretty much the "guru" of prescribed burning.

Is Williams a mind reader or a prophet? While his lite tome was sizzling in suburban salons, those closest to him rode the railfence of curiosity - wondering if he was telling their story... or scripting it. Summers are hot enough in South Carolina; page 85 didn't help matters when frisky flirtation turned ardor turned... the other Letter A. Whether it was suggestion or stimulation, Williams, and those leggy lovelies who adore him, caused a ruckus that not even the ... profs at Clemson could have calculated. Predictive or Prescient, he was killing her softly with his words. Know what I mean?

Younger Than Springtime - audio book.......2002-04-17

This is probably one of the worst books I have ever read (listened to). I was never able to find a plot, and even though no one ever had sex in the book, everyone was always thinking about it and wanting to. Not very realistic. And, sorry, Jonathan Morosz, but the narration couldn't have gotten any more monotone.

Mind-numbingly boring.......2000-10-03

I am 85 pages into this book and I'm still waiting for something to happen. Anything! Just a teensy smidgen of action of any kind! I don't ask for much. I did not read A Midwinter's Tale, so I guess this book is just another sequel that doesn't stack up on its own. Normally I don't review a book until I've finished it, but at this rate, that is unlikely to happen. (Two stars given instead of one because Mr. Greeley can in fact write - I'm sure he's pretty good when he actually has a story to tell.)

A great follow-up to A Mid-Winter's Tale.......2000-03-23

Sorry but I disagree with Lombard, Illinois-this was a very fast read-I finished it in 2 days. The pages couldn't turn fast enough for me to keep up with Chucky & the rest of the O'Malley family. The 2nd half of the book, John's Love Story was really moving-how Chuck's father, John The Evangelist O'Malley(yes, it was his middle name)met & fell in love with the good April, who it turned out was supposedly "engaged" to Jim Clancy, who would become the lowlife father of Chuck's true love, Rosemarie. John's Story takes place from 1918-1925 & is an integral part of the O'Malley legend. If you've already read A Mid-Winter's Tale, scoop this one up fast & you'll be caught up in it in no time. Can't wait for the next installment, which I've no doubt should be out sometime next year.

YOUNGER THAN SPRINGTIME.......2000-03-13

JUST FINISHED THIS BOOK FINALLY! FOR MR. GREELEY THIS WAS A VERY SLOW READ. A MIDWINTER'S TALE WAS MUCH MORE INTERESTING. I WILL HOWEVER LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT INSTALLMENT OF THE CRAZY O'MALLEY'S.

I started Greg Williams' book and laughed all the way to the end. The story of a power-lawyer who devolves into a beer-swilling, swaggering frat-boy cum hero is a wonderful satire on the youth culture that runs us ragged. This is a fable as a novel, one written with heart, humor, and a great and subtle appreciation of the madness of our times

The year's most refreshing.......1997-11-23

I waited for months to find this book available. I was a seatmate of the author's wife on a flight to Denver, and in the course of the conversation, learned of her husband and his first book due out soon. I figured it would be fun to read it, considering the chance meeting. What a delightful surprise it was! Cant remember when I smiled and laughed more while devouring the chapters of a book. I've since passed it around to family and friends (sorry about the $$$ Greg!) and the response has been "how refreshing" in almost every case! Much to my surprise, men loved it, too! It's a "must read" for everyone over 40!! Which makes me wonder where a 30 year old got the insight and perfect feeling for a middle-aged renaissance. Cant wait for his next offering!
