              Book Description

The trade in spices is one of the oldest and, at one time, one of the most important forms of commerce. While taken for granted today, spices have been coveted, plundered, fought over, and hoarded throughout history. The Age of Exploration was fueled in part by the desire to find direct routes to the spice-growing regions of Asia. Fortunes were made, battles fought, and countries conquered to satisfy the Western spice trade. This book is the first comprehensive bibliography on the economic and historical aspects of the spice trade. Arranged in broad chronological categories, the bibliography lists monographs, periodical articles, and other miscellaneous sources, including pamphlets and maps. The first chapter includes sources covering more than one time period or the entire history of the spice trade. Chapter two covers the period from Biblical times through the fall of the Roman Empire, c. 400 A.D., including ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the Holy Land. The Dark Ages and Middle Ages, from c. 400 to 1500, are covered in chapter three. Chapter four covers the Age of Exploration and Colonialism, including the European voyages and the colonization of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The final chapter provides selective coverage of the post-World War II era. Sources listed in all chapters are in Western languages and available in U.S. libraries.

                    Book Description

                    The General Introduction.
This compendium presents standardized information on approximately 150 edible horticultural crops. It has been designed principally to help with the task of fitting crops to land, but it can also be used for a variety of other purposes.
The information contained in the compendium is intended to serve exploratory thinking. Such thinking attempts to review all the cropping possibilities, exclude those which are obviously unsuitable, and identify those worth considering further using detailed information and different methods of thought and analysis.
The compendium has been produced because using books, reviews and abstracts for such exploratory thinking can be extremely time-consuming and frustrating. What has been attempted here is to compile information in a consistent form and present it so that it can be searched quickly. Users will find that not only can they rapidly review the basic characteristics of crops they are interested in, but they can also compare them quickly, something rarely possible with conventional crop descriptions.
To obtain the information for the compendium, a data-handbook (the Compiler's Handbook) was designed. Persons were found who were willing to compile data for individual crops, and the editors collected the entries. Data-sets were obtained for all the major crops and for a wide range of minor and rare crops.
The information is presented under approximately 70 headings covering the botany, ecology, husbandry, storage and uses of the crops. It was found to be sufficient to concentrate attention largely on the species level, but the range of characteristics exhibited by commercial and domestic cultivars is also indicated for some crop attributes.

                        Book Description

Ginger: The Genus Zingiber is the first comprehensive volume on ginger. Valued as a spice and medicinal plant from ancient times both in India and China, ginger is now used universally as a versatile spice and in traditional medicine as well as in modern medicine. This book covers all aspects of ginger, including botany, crop improvement, chemistry, biotechnology, production technology in the major producing countries, diseases, pests, and harvesting. It also explores processing, products, economics and marketing, pharmacology, medicinal applications, and uses as a spice and flavoring. Experts in the areas of genetic resources, botany, crop improvement, and biotechnology of ginger give an in-depth analysis of these key aspects, and each chapter concludes with an extensive bibliography.

No physics or chemistry laboratory is complete without this book, which since 1922 has been the authoritative series on chemical and physical data. If you're still using an old edition, now's the time to update. And if you're taking a physics or chemistry class, it's a great investment in your education.

                                Book Description

The Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Student Edition is specially stamped and priced, making this international, best-selling reference affordable to students at all levels, from high school through graduate school. The Handbook compiles a massive amount of well-organized and easily accessible data in a single volume. After decades of providing scientific facts and figures, the Handbook continues to be the standard reference in the field. Revisions to the Handbook have kept up with semiconductors and high-temperature superconductors; addressed environmental concerns by providing data on pollutants, contaminants, global warming, and ground water contamination; and updated pertinent data to stay current with IUPAC standards.

5 out of 5 stars Things You Need.......2005-05-17

I knew that I was going to go in to some form of Chemistry in High School, and in College, I decided to go into Chemical Education. I am now a High School teacher who teaches Chemistry. It is with this background that I recommend that parents or students who plan to persue chemistry as a life-long ambition attain a copy (doesn't have to be the latest, get a cheap one) of the CRC or Lange's. This is because at some point in your life, you will need to look up the enthalpy of Al(OH)3 which can NOT be found on the net and not in most textbooks. Also, if you are going in to organic chemistry, get a Merck Index.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible resource.......2004-07-25

If I were allowed only two reference books, they would be the OED and this.

This book doesn't have everything, it just seems that way. Listing the content would take pages, and much of it is chemical or physical arcana - if you need the data, you already know what to look for. At a more accessible level, it lists the frequencies of notes in several musical scales, information about common wire sizes, astronomical information, the chemical makeup of the human body, and ways to create carefully controlled humidity. That last one can be helpful to woodworkers; this book really does have something for almost everyone.

Although it comes out every few years, most people won't need to update very often. The definition of a volt, for example, changes rarely and only in small ways. This is a pricey book, but it holds its value pretty well.

This is the scientific reference book to have. If you know a student interested in any of the sciences, it's also a great book to give, and it's something that will be valued for years to come.

                                5 out of 5 stars A FORMIDABLE SUPERLATIVE GEM.......2003-02-16

Very useful and very relevant, nearly all the chapters of this edition of "CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics" have been revised. The book is up-to-date, and provides extensive coverage on all the significant physico-chemical phenomena. Chemists, physicists, biochemists, engineers, pharmacists, and other scientists and professionals would value this textbook. Its CD-ROM version would be of great benefit to mobile users.
I was impressed by the way it analyzed molecular interactions in each of the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Electron transfer, and transformations of pure substances were the focus here. Its biochemical section simplified many of the physiological reactions that are often considered complex.
In the same vein, I am certain that most readers would appreciate the classical exposure which optics, thermodynamics, geophysics, nuclear chemistry, and atomic physics sections received. All the recent advances in rotational and vibrational spectroscopy were included. David Lide did a commendable job in moulding this 2700-paged single-volume gem.
Each chapter indulged in practical analysis; with suggestions on how to improve day-to-day applications. Safety measures, as well as guidelines on how to cope with industrial and laboratory hazards were provided. Also, further information sources were made avalaible in one of its numerous appendices.
This is surely an outstanding text: no major weaknesses! It is a formidable reference tool that would please scientists and allied professionals. I recommend it with all pleasure!

5 out of 5 stars a critical reference for chemists.......2002-08-03

While this doesn't contain *everything* for a single topic, it certainly contains all that a chemist usually needs for easy reference about chemistry and physics.

If you (or your current copy of the CRC) are a bit older, you'll probably find some sections in the new edition missing - e.g., no more trigonometry tables with the proliferation of cheap calculators - and new things added. This is the sort of book which has SO much stuff, you will never use it all - but it will (almost) always be able to help you.

This is the one reference book I was willing to pay for out of pocket, whether or not my employer paid for it.

I found a 1927 copy of this at a used book store a few years ago ... - I still have it, and believe it or not, I do use it. It's got really neat stuff the modern editions don't. Which is why you shouldn't hesitate to drop [money] for one today. It will still be useful 60 years from now.

This is not the sort of thing I would replace annually!

                                5 out of 5 stars What's to say?.......2002-02-07

This is THE reference book used by all chemists and physicists. If you need it, buy it. Beats fighting over old beat up copies at school or library.

                                      Book Description

On a clear, cold morning in January 1998, in the Selkirk Mountains of southeastern British Columbia, six experienced skiers were buried in a massive avalanche. They didn’t have a chance. A combination of factors — steep, open terrain; an unstable winter snow pack; poor weather conditions; and a trigger provided by a handful of backcountry skiers — made the tragedy, the worst day for avalanche deaths in Canadian history and one of the most tragic in North America, inevitable. This personalized view of an avalanche explores a natural phenomenon that has been, and remains, a force of awesome, unstoppable power. The author also raises questions about risk — and about what might have enticed a group of knowledgeable, experienced skiers to place themselves in the path of an avalanche.

                                            Book Description

The development of the supersymmetry technique has led to significant advances in the study of disordered metals and semiconductors. Proven of great use in the analysis of modern mesoscopic quantum devices, the technique has also found applications in other areas, such as localization and quantum chaos. This volume provides comprehensive treatment of the ideas and uses of supersymmetry. The first four chapters set out the basic results and some straightforward applications of the technique. Thereafter, Professor Efetov covers a range of topics in detail, including random matrix theory, persistent currents in mesoscopic rings, transport in mesoscopic devices, localization in quantum wires and films, and the quantum Hall effect. Special features include problems and solutions drawn from mesoscopics, localization, and quantum chaos, and extended introductions that make each chapter self-contained. The text will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers in condensed matter, statistical, and mathematical physics and in quantum chaos.

If you want to be a physicist and work in condensed matter theory then probably it is a good idea to have this book. In my knowledge this book is the only one, which discuss application of Supersymmetry method in condensed matter physics and author does it superbly. Second chapter, which deals with Supermathematics, is very nice and clear you will easily comprehend things about Grassmann variables and all other stuff about super elements (vectors, matrices ext). Reading this chapter doesn’t take much time and really no preliminary knowledge is required. Chapter 3 “Diffusion modes” which discuss localization, interference, is also very clear and physical. Fun starts from Chapter 4 and 5. These chapters are the most important because Nonlinear Sigma Model is constructed. But at the same time these chapters are very challenging, some times, and actually the most of the time, it is very difficult to follow the calculations. I don’t have good advice, which can help in reading these chapters the most important is not to give up. Usually it takes whole summer of intensive study. But if you will be able to pass through all derivations I think that the doors to the world of amazingly interesting physics is now open for you. Rest chapters are applications of supersymmetry in different branches of condensed matter physics. In overall I can say that this book is very difficult but at the same time extremely interesting.
