By outlining and explaining the enigmatic terms and concepts used to track and ultimately determine stock movements, The Math Behind Wall Street: How the Market Works and How to Make it Work for You, by Bentley College mathematics professor Nicholas Teebagy, is designed to provide average investors with financial tools that usually are the province of professionals. Intimidated by the likes of ARCH/GARCH models and neural networks? Don't be. Teebagy begins by describing the basics of probability and risk in order to clarify the way that uncertain future events are taken into account to form a well-reasoned investment analysis. In clear language, and with the welcome assistance of numerous charts and graphs, he then goes on to specify how all this can be used to calculate the potential performance of an entire portfolio. Lastly, he offers an introduction to advanced topics such as the aforementioned ARCH/GARCH models (for tracking periods of continued volatility) and neural networks (which attempt to imitate the way human brains process information). While not for the fiscally faint of heart, this short but information-packed volume will assist serious investors as they try to keep ahead of evolving market trends. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Expertly written for both the newcomer to Wall Street and the veteran, this title provides information on what makes the markets work. Explanations of covariance, Beta, indexing, neural networks and much more. Charts & graphs. . .

Great reference.......2007-04-24
The value of this book is not as an instructional book (yes, it is too short for that. The bibliography of this book provides excellent direction for further instruction), but as a reference. It is a pretty comprehensive reference for basic finance math. The only thing missing is risk management formulas (VaR, etc). I used this is a constant reference while doing my MBA and found it made my life much easier! Highly recommended.
A good reference for investment formulas.......2005-05-17
This is a great book.
I use it as a reference for putting formulas into my investment spreadsheets.
It would be a good read, if you can reading a mathematics book enjoyable, in order to become familiar with the concepts behind probability, risk, and measuring return on an investment or portfolio. As already stated, I just use it as reference material - but I find myself going to it again and again.
The Best Introduction.......2003-11-16
I am currently on a Financial Markets course that is at Masters Level. I bought this book because of its small size and the basic details it covers. I have many other bigger books that go into more detail about stock pricing. However, this book really does explain the basics better than any other I have read. It explains in very simple and statistical terms areas such as the Simple Index Model (SIM), CAPM , Measuring performance of a portfolio, and Modern Portfolio theory. It also touches the surface of advanced moddelling in ARCH/GARCH.
But what really sets it apart is that it explains terms not from a purely academic point of view but a much more informative way by looking at how investors should and would approach a problem. If you have some understanding of statistics such as mean and variance (although both are explained in the book) then I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about embarking on an investment course of some kind. It is a definite read for any beginner and will make the course easier becasue it explains the fundamentals very well.
Savvy, informative, invaluable reading........2000-06-04
Savvy investors in the stock market need knowledge of the math behind the market, and The Math Behind Wall Street provides it: a slim book masks a wealth of information covering statistics, probability, and other practical applications of business math concepts. From risk factors to annual rates of return, The Math Behind Wall Street will prove invaluable.
Excellent for technical oriented investors.......2000-05-25
This book places heavy emphasis on the technical and mathematical aspect of investing. It is quite excellent but I found the math to be very advanced and therefore it is probably not suitable to most individual investors. Like the previous reviewer, I also found the book to be too brief.
This book definitely has merit, but it isn't right for beginners or the mainstream investment community. The best audience would be investors with highly specialized investing methods.

The Man and His Land.......2005-08-13
Texan John Graves is not a man to shy away from challenges: he invites them. When he bought his little piece of Texas, he clearly knew he was in for a big one, but I am not sure if he was aware of how his accumulated knowledge of this land would shape the man he was becoming. This book takes you through the process of a bumpy courtship and the resulting marriage between a man and his land.
Already armed with a deep appreciation of Nature, he was able to slowly coax renewed vigor into this misused patch of land through his gentle nurturing of it.
The book is full of his personal adventurers such as stone masonry, animal husbandry, carpentry, and all the hazards inherent in farm life. All presented without regret, with humor and modesty. Inevitably he laments the encroachment of more urban activities as they threaten his bucolic existence. Yet he speaks of the duality of his own urban interactions and compares them to the realities of his rural lifestyle.
This book to me was as much about the man John Graves as it is about his subject, "Hard Scrabble". Tough and complex, like his Patch of Land, he personifies the best Texas has to offer.
Back to the land, Texas-style.......2003-12-14
In 1960, at the age of 40 and after many years wondering the globe, Texas-born writer John Graves bought a worn-out patch of land in the hills south of Fort Worth. It began as something of a retreat and became a life-long attachment. This book, published in 1974, is a humorously thoughtful description of how this new landowner becomes equally owned by the land he has settled on.
Not a long book, it reads at a leisurely pace, as Graves traces the history of the land, once fertile and grass-covered. He tells what he knows of the numerous tribes of Native Americans who once lived on it, including the fierce Comanches. Then he characterizes the first settlers, who knew next to nothing about land stewardship and cared less, exhausting it with poor farming techniques, overgrazing, and a single-crop economy--cotton. We learn of the toll taken in depleted soil, diminished flood control, and the spread of cedar and scrub brush across former prairie. And we learn of the descendants of these early settlers, diminished by reduced circumstances, some of them making a living by cutting down cedar brakes into fence posts.
Having established the history of the land, Graves takes us on a tour of his farm, which he calls Hard Scrabble, describing in turn the fields and streams, the plant and animal life, the weather. Then he describes the long, slow process of reclaiming what he can of his 400 acres, clearing the land, building a house, barn, and other outbuildings, learning stone masonry and carpentry as he goes. In connection with this subject, there is a discourse on the industriousness and workmanship of Mexican laborers, all of them illegal, who help him with building, fencing, and fighting back the growth of unwanted brush and cedar. On the subject of animal husbandry, he tells of raising cattle and goats. And in the investment of himself in all of these he ruminates on how they transform him and root this former world-traveler more firmly into a rural frame of mind.
Of the many things I enjoyed in this book, I especially liked his capturing of the way his country neighbors talk. Their points of view and temperaments are captured in quirky turns of phrase and syntax. An episode involving local fox hunters is a joy to read. Graves is in many ways a Texas version of E. B. White, transplanted from city to country and not only seeing this remote environment with fresh eyes but engaging physically with it, befriending the long-time inhabitants, and discovering a way of life only dimly understood by city-dwellers. Although Graves' writing style is more given to verbal flourishes, his wry humor and literary allusions remind one of White's collection of essays on living in Maine, "One Man's Meat."
I recommend this book to anyone interested in country life, Texas, subsistence farming, and natural history. As companions to "Hard Scrabble," I would recommend books by three other rancher/farmer writers: "Windbreak," by South Dakota writer Linda Hasselstrom, "A Collection of Cowboy Logic" by North Dakota writer Ryan Taylor, and "Sketches From the Ranch" by Montana writer Dan Aadland.

Book Description
John Graves named it Hard Scrabble when he bought it -- 400 acres of rough Texas hill country at the edge of what used to be the old Cotton Kingdom until overcropping, drought and hard winds stripped away most of the good dirt.
Here Graves brought his family, built a house, raised goats and cattle, shot deer, wrestled the brush for some crops. The rest he left to nature.
We understand and share the author's commitment to this countryside. He includes us in his ramblings and makes us feel a part of the land, of its rocky ledges and growing things, its scrub and cedar, its wolves and wheeling buzzards, and its past, always present.
"A 20th century Thoreau." --Lewis Gannett

MY LIFESAVER.......2006-09-04
I highly recommend getting this book, and if you have to choose between this book and the text, get this one. Science is step-by-step problem solving, not just reading paragraphs of words.
This book takes all the even-numbered problems in the text and goes through them step-by-step with explanations, like a teacher would on a board. Becuase there are many problems of the same kind, you can do the odd-numbered ones easily after reading through the even-numbered ones.
I got a 4.0 in the class, and I never bought the textbook. I only had this book. I used it extensively for studying for the exams, and for working on homework problems. I just borrowed the textbook from the library when I needed it (for example, getting the homework problems).
Opening this book is like turning to your own personal Chemistry professor.
Not really what I was looking for.......2006-09-01
Its interesting to note that this solution's manual only has the answers to the evens. A much earlier version of this solution's manual has all of the answers. Why was it changed? I have no idea. But the change was definatly not a good thing. Especially, if since my teacher keeps giving me the odd problems
It helps me a lot!.......2006-04-12
Although the author said in the book that this book is not a brief from the main text book and you should mainly read the main text book before readind this solution manual, I found that I could understand it even though I didn't read the main text book at all. It did help me reduce my valuable time. I could use that reduced time to read all other textbook for other many subjects.
Student Solution Manual to Accompany Chemistry.......2006-03-22
I found this very helpful. The solutions were worked out and easily understood. I would have liked solutions to all questions.

Wonderful Book.......2000-08-27
This is the best book that you can get to supplement the Sixth Edition Chemistry book. Even though it has only the even answers, a lot of the problems are very similar to the odd problems. Since you have to send a teaching certificate to McGraw McHill to get the full teacher's edition, this is the next best thing.
Student Solutions Manual.......2000-04-05
This manual is a complementary guide to Raymond Chang's Chemistry. It, step by step, illustrates how to solve specific chem problems that are found in the textbook. As a result, a student can learn the process of solving these problems. Furthermore, the manual gives an outline of the different types of problems from the textbook. In addition, tips, tricks, and often shortcuts on solving chem problems are given.

Book Description
This book is the result of a growing realization that fluctuations play an active, even creative, role in nonequilibrium processes such as self-organization, pattern formation, and information processing and energy transduction in biological systems. In contrast to the general notion that fluctuations represent an undesirable "noise" in such systems - unimportant at best and undesirable or disruptive at worst - this book points toward a view in which fluctuations are fundamental aspects of the systems under study and frequently serve a constructive or stabilizing role in the dynamics. It includes contributions by prominent researchers in a great variety of disciplines, from theoretical cosmologists to experimental biologists, on such topics as stochastic resonance, noise in sensory nervous systems, mechanisms of intracellular transport, and kinetic theory of nonequilibrium systems.

Book Description
Cats are whimsical. But don't let them catch you laughing at them! Cats are comical, yet without pretence. Scherzo captivated Joybells. Therefore, a book about this cat had to be born.
Pretty White Kitty, a true story, is about a deaf cat, declawed, always living above her"handicaps." Joybells is her slave, servant and alas, her typist.
From the vacuum ride to the lizard episode, Scherzo takes you through many humorous capers including bees, thermos and the refrigerator incidents.
A real cat-lover book. This is an up beat book, full of encouragement for anyone with a handicap. A great book for the deaf, with jolly humor throughout. Enjoy.
