Book Description

Too often there are serious missed signals between a company's stated goals and the methods employed to try to reach them. Translating Strategy into Shareholder Value is a unique look at how the planning process relates to the achievement of shareholder value, and ways to ensure that the two directly complement each other. Using tools and a special case study to analyze past, present, and future performance, the book takes readers through a host of steps, including:

* Comparing existing strategy to the competition and the economy as a whole * Analyzing productive capabilities and costs * Bringing nonfinancial metrics to test how future strategy creates value * Selecting the right analytical tool and looking at strategic solutions

If corporations are to truly maximize their success, managers need to understand how to translate corporate strategy to the bottom line -- and that means seeing the big picture.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well-written, useful business resource!.......2003-10-09

"Translating Strategy into Shareholder Value" is a well-organized, clearly written guide to effectively evaluating the multitude of strategic alternatives available to an organization within the strategic planning process. With the maximization of shareholder value as the end goal, author Trotta introduces the original concept of Step-Wise Approach to Value (SWAV) to help companies achieve that goal. SWAV involves the application of four filters (economic, strategic, operational and valuation) through which strategic alternatives can be analyzed. A number of specific analytical tools such as the Porter Model, the DuPont model, Regression Analysis and Discounted Cash Flow are discussed in detail. I found it helpful that Trotta addresses not only the benefits of each of these tools, but the risks and limitations as well. This book would be a useful resource for financial decision-makers, business owners, students and anyone seeking concrete advice on making better strategic planning decisions.

      Book Description

Open City is an investigation into the city: its nature, its possible futures, its emergence as one of the most contested economic, cultural, and political sites of our time. The range of contributors is as diverse and dynamic as the cities they examine, inhabit, and haunt: philosopher Jacques Derrida reflects on the fate of Prague; playwright Richard Sanger presents a drama set in war-torn Sarajevo; poet Lynn Crosbie explores Toronto's hidden corners in an epic ABC; architecture theorist and mayor of Venice Massimo Cacciari discusses Naples and the new Europe; novelist André Alexis reveals mystical tropes beneath Ottawa; and architecture theorist Paul Virilio discusses the political dangers lurking in cyberspace. Other contributors include novelist Catherine Bush, Harvard architecture professor Rodolphe el-Khoury, architect Farshid Moussavi, artist Krystof Wodiczko, and many more.

Combines engineering practices for the solution of erosion and flood control, drainage and irrigational problems. Sufficient hydrologic information--precipitation, infiltration, evaporation, transpiration and runoff--is given as background for design problems discussed later. Makes readers aware that the environment must be considered in the design of soil and water facilities. Features many example problems, with detailed solutions, to facilitate learning.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but needs more information.......2000-06-08

This book is a good reference for those who works on erosion and sediment control. Needs more information concerning the type of construction necessary for erosion control, because this book touches this subject faintly. I rate it 4 stars because all other information is covered extensively and clear. My interest in this book was for erosion control, but when I tried to look for the information, I was dissapointed. But comparing this book to other similar references, this is the best you can ever find.

                                      Book Description

This book provides researchers at the forefront of nonlinear optical technologies with robust procedures and software for the investigation of the fundamental phenomena in nonlinear optical waveguide structures. A full vectorial electromagnetic formulation is adopted and the condition under which simplification to a scalar formulation is possible are clearly indicated. The need to model the dielectric saturation properly is identified and improved algorithms are presented for obtaining the complete power dispersion curve of structures exhibiting bistability. As the stability analysis of nonlinear modes is crucial to the developments of nonlinear model methods, an effective procedure to investigate the propagation of the scalar nonlinear waves in 3D is another important feature of the book. All of the procedures described as well as an automatic mesh generator for the finite element method are incorporated into a software package which is included with this book.

                                        Book Description

A couple of werewolves, Susan, and Alf, each wearing an “eat a human” T-shirt walked in Ghostville Mall. They stopped in front of the movie theater and looked at the list. The two looked at each other and walked away.

Susan eyed a human skeleton through the arcadeÂ's windows. She elbowed Alf and he looked at her. When Susan had his attention she whispered, “LetÂ's eat him when he comes out.” Her eyes pointed out the human skeleton.

Following SusanÂ's eyes, Alf saw the human skeleton and started drooling. “He looks good enough to eat.” Alf and Susan sat on the wooden bench opposite the entrance, so they could see the human skeleton through the window. They sat there grooming each otherÂ's heads like a pair of chimpanzees. Both ate the fleas taken from the otherÂ's head.
