Book Description
This unique book reaches beyond the abstract theory presented in most standard textbooks to portray the principles and practices of Auditing as they are actually applied in the workplace. The novellawhich forms a single, on-going, fictional case study meant to supplement a texttraces the professional life of Jack Butler, graduate of Farwestern University and current CPA As readers progress, they share with Jack, his clients, and colleagues various aspects of a typical career in public accountingaspects students will most likely encounter during their own careers.
Customer Reviews:
Good Information for New Auditors.......2006-06-22
This is a nice resource for audit students or new auditors. I doubt it would be entertaining for most others. The book was written as an "instructional novella" for students and it offers some good information on public accounting audit careers.
The story follows the career of a fictional auditor in a large, fictional firm in Oakland, California. He goes through various typical experiences to give students insight into what public accounting and auditing is really like. This is the type of information that is hard for students to come by. The story follows the career of a star, and may create an overly optimistic impression of what an audit career might be like. But the author also throws in some of the negatives. The narrator is asked by both managers and clients to makes some questionable moves, and he and others suffer from the grind of being over-worked, and even outside of the expected busy season. He also points out that pay is not quite in balance with the level of work and responsibility.
I think this book would have been better if it didn't focus on a fast-rising star. The narrator made partner at age 32, after nine years, which seems pretty fast to me. The book does offer some good information and helps new auditors know some of what is coming, but I wouldn't expect most careers to follow this path. However, I would still recommend it for anyone who is considering a career in public accounting.

Book Description
The Microsoft® Office System is the most popular desktop suite of personal productivity tools and technologies. Because the Microsoft Office suite of tools is so comprehensive, it can be challenging for people in certain professions to understand how to use Office to perform tasks specific to their job. This book focuses on the tasks that accountants and auditors performs every dayrather than the all too common software-centric approach that many other technology books habitually adopt. Other Microsoft Office books on the market are often difficult to understand because they largely address an Information Technology (IT) audience, cover too many professions in a single book, or are so large (more than 800 pages) as to be overwhelming. This book was written with accountants and auditors in mind. In fact, this book was developed by consulting and interviewing industry experts, software trainers, technology experts, and of course, accountants and auditors. The author learned exactly which topics were most troublesome for accountants and auditors, and made sure to explain them thoroughly. This book covers the use of these Microsoft Office System products for accountants and auditors:
-Microsoft® Word 2003
-Microsoft® Excel 2003
-Microsoft® Outlook 2003
-Microsoft® PowerPoint 2003
-Microsoft® OneNote 2003
This book helps accountants and auditors cut through the hard stuff, and makes Microsoft Office work for them. The book comes with free bonus materials: -Additional Financial Templates
-Bonus Chapter: "Working with XML"
-Keyboard Shortcut References

Not worth the money.......2001-11-26
I found this book to be a waste of time. This book does not give an explanation to a majority of the questions throughout the book, especially the multiple choice questions. What good is it to have the correct answer if you don't know why it is or even how to get the answer yourself. I would not recommend anyone to use this book as a study aid. The only thing this book is good for is to get an idea of the type of questions.
ACCOUNTANT NOT ACCOUNTABLE.......2001-01-23
THIS BOOK IS VERY MUCH OUTDATED.IT USES A LOT OF OBSOLETE TERMS AND THERE ARE SOME PRINTING ERRORS(INCLUDING THREE ANSWERS PRINTED INCORRECTLY!)IT WAS NOT VERY REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ACTUAL EXAM THAT I TOOK FOR ACCT/AUDIT.THIS BOOK WAS NOT VERY MUCH HELP AT ALL.YOU COULD DO A LOT BETTER WITH SOME WELL DESIGNED SELF-HELP BOOKS.
ARCO Accountant Auditor.......2000-06-03
This is an outstanding guide to studying for the local government Accountant test, i.e. City, County etc. A great value. You must possess an Accounting background and be willing to spend some time studying the material. I've been out of Accounting School for some 30 years, so I spent two to three hours a day for the week or ten days prior to the test studying. I achieved the desired results; #1 on the Accountant I list.

Book Description
Research in real estate finance and economics has developed in an exciting way in the past twenty-five years or so. The resulting theoretical and empirical findings are shining a new light on some of the classic mysteries of the real estate markets. It is good to see that a growing proportion of this research output is concerned with contemporary problems and issues regarding the European and Far Eastern property markets.
To stimulate a creative exchange of new ideas and a debate of the latest research findings regarding the global property markets, the Maastricht-Cambridge Real Estate Finance and Investment Symposium was established. This initiative aims at bringing together a number of leading researchers in the field for a short, intensive conference. The 2000 Symposium, which was hosted by Maastricht University in the Netherlands in June of that year, is the first in an annual series of such conferences, which will alternate between Maastricht University and Cambridge University. This book is a compilation of the papers originally presented at the first Maastricht-Cambridge Symposium in 2000.

A Sociology of Police Misconduct.......2006-06-03
Dean J. Champion is a sociology professor at Texas A & M University with three decades of research and teaching in the field of criminal justice. "Since 1914, the U.S. Supreme Court has decided many cases involving police misconduct", he wrote in his preface(px). He has compiled a sourcebook of reference material concerning the history of police misconduct and the issues and controversies that arise. His six chapters are 1. History of Police Misconduct; 2. Issues and Controversies; 3. Chronology; 4. Biographical Sketches; 5. U.S. Supreme Court Cases; 6. Agencies and Organizations; and 7. Print and Nonprint Resources.
Professor Champion is concerned about rampant police misconduct, saying "the pervasivenes of police misconduct among police departments throught the United States cannot be underestimated" (p17). He believes that studies and research into this problem are necessary to come to terms with it. Toward this end, he has produced this valuable reference work.

Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling, Second Edition
ASIN: 0471973475 |
Book Description
The successful investigation of the hydrogeology of an area depends on the collection of reliable field data. First, the available existing information must be identified and used to develop a preliminary conceptual understanding of the groundwater system in the area. This conceptual model is then used to identify the gaps in the available information and to plan a fieldwork programme to obtain the necessary data required to verify and improve the model. This book follows this systematic approach to completing a hydrogeological study and explains how to decide on the measurements which are needed and on the instruments and techniques used to make them. Measurements of groundwater levels, rainfall and evaporation, spring and stream flows and the use of groundwater tracer techniques are covered. There is a great deal of practical information on all aspects of planning and completing field investigations and on the interpretation of field evidence. Advice on safety aspects of field work is also included. This second edition has been fully revised and updated to cover advances in the use of electronic instruments and the needs of the environmental regulators. The scope has been widened to include the design and execution of pumping tests, and groundwater sampling methods to meet the protocols adopted by national environmental regulators. A chapter on report writing and the presentation of information is included. Field Hydrogeology is designed to assist anyone who is involved in the collection and interpretation of hydrogeological data. It is suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students of geology, hydrogeology, environmental sciences and engineering, as well as a wide range of professionals working in the water resources and environmental protection fields.

Book Description
This volume is divided into five parts. The title of the volume refers primarily to part I, which is by far the largest and comprises papers discussing the fundamental questions of biology and related psychological and philosophical problems. Following the reproduction of papers brought to publication by Bohr, there is a separate Appendix to Part I including some of Bohr's most interesting and substantive unpublished contributions in this area. The papers in Part I span the last thirty years of Bohr's life and display his great interest in biological problems and his unremitting efforts to show that biology cannot be reduced to physics and chemistry.
Part II contains articles of a more general cultural interest. Some of these show that Bohr regarded the complementary perspective to be of value also outside the scientific sphere.
Part III contains the articles Bohr wrote about the great Danish philosopher Harald Høffding. These short papers are presented in a section on their own because of the continuing discussion in the history of science about Høffding's possible influence on Bohr's work in physics and his whole scientific approach.
Part IV comprises articles illuminating the history of 20th century physics. Bohr had great veneration for his predecessors and teachers, and he prepared these articles with great care.
Part V contains correspondence relating to the material in Parts I through IV. As in previous volumes an inventory of relevant unpublished manuscripts held at the Niels Bohr Archive constitutes an appendix to the whole volume.

Book Description
The three volumes comprising
Nature, Cognition and System present a representative collection of reports on current research in the major topics of system theory and cybernetics as applied to the two main classes of systems, viz. the natural and cognitive systems. The contributions emphatically present alternative reflections and creative syntheses of such time-honoured and controversial issues of the `nature-cognition-system connection' which in principle and in fact form the very subject-matter of the current `sciences of complexity'.
In the present volume Niels Bohr's seminal idea of `complementarity' has been chosen as the hinge around which these discussions, critical appraisals, alternative views, and applications, both orthodox and non-orthodox have taken place. This pivotal notion seems to exert an appeal not only upon the strictly technical or disciplinary aspects of quantum physics, but also upon the wider epistemological understanding, which is based on the role and nature of language for measurement processes, that Bohr himself seemed to apply to subjects other than physics, and which later might turn out to be of primary importance for an explanation in genuine system-scientific context.
Volume II is organized into three parts. The first part contains contributions which have been written quite in the true spirit of the Copenhagen Interpretation. The second one contains those with a quite pronounced critical mood towards the orthodox theory, including the discussions among others of the problematic issues of physics and cognitive science. The third part is dedicated to the discussions of this complex `nature-cognition-system connection' from the non-orthodox point of view.
The scope and depth of the contributions reveal an underlying coherence, despite the divergence in the approaches to the study of the subject, thus making this volume a useful source for researchers, practitioners, teachers and students of the variety of disciplines making up modern system theory, cybernetics and cognitive science.

Book Description
Set in southern California during Reagan’s 1980s, Michael Scott Moore’s first novel follows the exploits of two teenage boys: Eric, an intelligent, thoughtful, socially restless honors student, and Tom, a defiant, posturing rebel, with a Clockwork Orange complex and a taste for cocaine and cowboy hats. Fifteen years after his ostensibly accidental death at the hands of Tom, Eric narrates the story of his last few months on earth. He believes he is a nefesh, a restless Jewish ghost that wanders the earth until put at ease, and he ultimately realizes that in order to find peace he must reconcile his resentment and vengefulness with his own enduring incredulousness over his premature death. This humorous, honest, and, at times, heartbreaking book introduces a new city to the atlas of imaginary American towns. Moore’s Calaveras Beach is a microcosm of L.A.’s protean pop culture, where Rasta beach bums, trust-fund gutter punks, and Nicaraguan drug lords weave in and out of the lives of grieving hausfraus, pitiable driver’s-ed instructors, and awkward adolescents. All mix seamlessly in this enjoyable debut novel about the confusion and frustration we face while coming of age, and the fears and apprehensions that may persist well after death.
Customer Reviews:
A Shallow Look on Being Naive.......2005-12-07
This book centers around the major theme of individuality and conformity. Though it could be argued that since both characters were destroyed because of their need to be individuals, I bieleve there is a different point behind it all. In several instances, these boys try and find the hypocritcal people in society. They hate a certain gang at school for their bully persona to only emulate that themselves. Their mentor talks about going against the man and capitalism, when he himself came from a very rich capitalist background and benifits from it.
This is a somewhat dark novel that shows the shallowness of several characters. All the characters are dynamic and go through several changes. The book was truly gripping in its delivery and style; I read the book in one setting because of not being able to put it down. I did not grow up around such conditions while going through highschool, but since I am not that far removed from the environment, I related to this book fairly well. A good book that deserves a consideration.
Pretty Darn Good.......2004-09-01
The author of this book is not trying to say "non-conformism" is a dangerous thing" (see below). The novel is a subtle satire on American counterculture; it shows how some people who talk the loudest about individualism and freedom don't know the first thing about either one. I thought it was dark and funny.
Looking Rorward to His Next Work.......2004-08-23
Since finishing the book, it has been in my thoughts frequently; it is a gauge against which I compare my own experiences growing up with the characters Moore has created. The author and I grew up in the same area, only a couple of years apart; we attended the same highschool for a couple of overlapping years, and a number of the locations he has so successfully described in the abstract are readily identifiable as "real" locations in our hometown. The imagery that he manages to pull up elicits a gut level comprehension of the Los Angeles climate. Los Angeles is constantly buzzing with activity, a proof of the converse of the adage "still waters run deep." The surface buzz of Los Angeles is sizable, its populace constantly vibrating on the edge of the now and the next, but with limited consideration for what comes after "next," or the past. Los Angeles isn't so much "sunny" as in a state of constant "glare." The sky isn't blue, nor is it often brown with smog; it's usually a matte silver tone -- a color that tends to simply amplify the sun's natural brightness to a dizzying shine that makes things stand out intensely. But over time that glare damages that which it shines upon, simply by its own intensity. Moore's novel is like that as well. As clearly as it depicts the world we lived in, it also has worn some of the polish from it.
With regard to another review that posits that deviation from the norm is what leads to the death of the main character, I read it as the reverse: Eric is brought down because of a critically mistimed attempt at bald honesty. It has less to do with conformity than a lack of emotional tools in youth to deal with difficult situations, or to reason out their consequences.
Rebels Without A Clue.......2004-08-21
In response to Jaydekitten's comments, I do not believe that Mr. Moore was conveying a message intended to discourage non-conformist thought and behavior. In point of fact - and his book amply demonstrates this - most teens (of any generation) lack the empirical life knowledge, the bumps and bruises and contusions that the adult experience delivers, to make a considered choice and proclaim "I don't want to be a part of that." They are still evolving as humans.
Consider, for instance, the video tape released last year of Columbine killers Klebold and Harris taking the day off for a little target practice in the woods near their suburban Colorado home. There is a smug arrogance about the duo, a simmering hatred of everything and everybody who doesn't respect their self-entitled right to be "different", that is so undeserved. Simply put, these are kids who couldn't accept and adjust to the amplified traumas and social blunders of high school, for cyin' out loud, so how were they ever to adapt to the "real world"? From my point of view, what we witness with Eric and Tom and Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold is harsh Darwinian theory in action, the universe, if you will, stepping in and straightening out a couple of design flaws; unfortunately and tragically, a few innocents usually get taken out of line in the process.
The Title Speaks for Itself.......2004-07-29
Yet another installment in a series of books tackling the issues that plague suburban youth, except this time it's set in the 1980's. While overall I enjoyed this book, I can't help but feel that the topic of teenagers and drugs has been done to death. "Too Much of Nothing" opens with the narrator Eric retelling the story of his murder. The reader witnesses as Eric relives his struggles to break free from his conforming to society standards and to present himself as an individual. In order to achieve this goal, he gives into his friend Tom's hoodlum wannabe antics. While Tom procliams himself as being a non-conformist, he reveals that he is easily swayed by other people's opinions and ideals.
My biggest problem with this book is that I couldn't quite grasp the point that Michael Scott Moore was attempting to present to the reader. Non-conformism is a dangerous thing? Because attempting to be an individual turns Tom's life into shambles and the second Eric steps away from his moral ideals, it gets him killed. And I promise that wasn't a spoiler, you know from the beginning that he dies :) Furthermore, the ending was too open and rushed for my tastes. And for as short as this novel is, I think Moore tried to tackle too many social issues and jam in too many pop culture references. It was overkill. In conclusion, while "Too Much of Nothing" was a quick and intriguing read, I would in no way consider it life-altering or flawless.
