Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Title and text mismatch.......2000-06-21

The title is about sucessful technology consulting. The text is a list of stuff that has been used in numerous other books. There is nothing new or inspiring. This book is written specifically for the CPA (not mentioned in the title) and is not for the IT professional or general consultant. I am returning mine today - not something even useful enough for the bookcase.

4 out of 5 stars CPAs can learn technology consulting from The Master.......2000-04-18

      Book Description

"Choosing Correctional Options that Work captures the highlights of the International Association of Residential and Community Alternatives (IARCA) conference, at which practitioners and researchers came together to identify what we know about effective community-based options and how we can improve that knowledge. Integrating the important finding and messages from that meeting, this volume is a major contribution to those interested in advancing the efficacy and utility of community correctional options." --John J. Larivee, Executive Director, Crime and Justice Foundation and President, IARCA Choosing Correctional Options that Work is the first volume to answer in detail the continuing and escalating demand for insight into correctional options and their effectiveness. This carefully edited book not only critiques the possible meanings of "correctional options" but also articulates "what works" by providing comprehensive reviews of relevant theory and empirical evidence. Reaching beyond an emphasis on interventions only, the contributors respond to the question of what works by examining risk or needs assessment techniques, intervention or sanctioning options, and program implementation approaches. Chapters illuminate how key decision and policymakers can improve their odds of choosing correctional options that work by simultaneously clarifying the demand for viable options and critically assessing past attempts to supply that demand. A must read, Choosing Correctional Options that Work provides a new and effective model for researchers, policymakers, planners, evaluators, administrators, and practitioners to facilitate more successful development of future correctional and other criminal justice options.

        Book Description

This volume contains an English translation of the Belgian Coordinated Acts on Commercial Companies. It reflects the intensive re-regulation of Belgian company law in the last decade resulting from both the implementation of EC harmonisation directives and Parliament's desire to correct shortcomings in the law highlighted by the Societe Generale takeover. The translation gives guidance on the incorporation of private and public companies, the provisions applicable to their share capital, their management and audit and their winding up. In addition, the procedures for the registration of foreign companies in Belgium will be useful for international companies wishing to establish a presence there without incorporating a subsidiary. The legislation on mergers and takeovers as well as the 1995 re-regulation of Company Law are covered and will be of interest to investors and their advisors considering Belgian target companies. This book replaces a previous publication by the same authors entitled The Belgian Coordinated Acts on Commercial Companies, which appeared as the third title in the Series of Legislation in Translation.

It is a subject regularly included as a final year option in materials science courses and is also of much industrial and academic interest. The book begins with a selection of chapters describing the most common commercial applications of composite materials, including those in the aerospace, automotive, and power generation industries. Section 2 outlines manufacturing and processing methods used in the production of composite materials ranging from basic aluminium matrix composites, through particle reinforced composites, to composites using novel matrix fibres such as titanium-silicon carbide and ceramics. Section 3 is devoted to the mechanical behaviour of different matrix materials and structure-property relations, with particular attention paid to failure and fracture mechanisms. The final section considers those new fibres and composite materials currently in development, including high strength copper composites, porous particle composites, active composites, and ceramic nanocomposites.

                    Book Description

This book provides in a single and unified volume a clear and thorough presentation of the recent advances in continuum damage mechanics for metals and metal matrix composites. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical formulation of the different constitutive models in this area, but sections are added to demonstrate the applications of the theory. In addition, some sections contain new material that has not appeared before in the literature.
The book is divided into three major parts: Part I deals with the scalar formulation and is limited to the analysis of isotropic damage in materials; Parts II and III deal with the tensor formulation and is applied to general states of deformation and damage.
The material appearing in this text is limited to plastic deformation and damage in ductile materials (e.g. metals and metal matrix composites) but excludes many of the recent advances made in creep, brittle fracture, and temperature effects since the authors feel that these topics require a separate volume for this presentation. Furthermore, the applications presented in this book are the simplest possible ones and are mainly based on the uniaxial tension test.

                      Book Description

In the last few years, a significant increase in applications of MMCs has taken place, particularly in the areas of automotive, aerospace, electronics, and recreation. These include continuous fiber reinforced MMCs for cables in power transmission, high temperature superconducting wires, particulate MMCs in civilian aircraft and automotive applications, and high volume fraction, high thermal conductivity substrates for electronic packaging. Nevertheless, as with any novel material systems, there is a lack of fundamental understanding on the part of practicing engineers and designers. This book would seek to address these issues, in a thorough and cohesive manner, as well as to provide students and scientists with a basic understanding of MMCs. This book will emphasize the synergistic relationships among processing, structure, and properties of metal matrix composites.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH DEPT OF AERONAUTICS AND ASTRONAUTICS report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A736624. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Lattice grid fins have been studied for missile tail control for several years. A lattice grid fin can be described as an unconventional missile control surface comprised of an outer frame supported by an inner lattice grid of lifting surfaces. This unconventional fin design offers favorable lift characteristics at high angle of attack as well as almost zero hinge moments allowing the use of small and light actuators. In addition, they promise good storability for potential tube-launched and internal carriage dispenser-launched applications. The drawback for the lattice grid fins is the high drag and potentially poor radar cross section performance produced by this unconventional control surface configuration. Current research at the United State Air Force's Aeroballistic Research Facility (ARF) at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida has indicated there is a critical transonic Mach number where normal shock waves are believed to be present within some of the grid cells. At this particular Mach number, there is a dynamic instability with severe variations of the pitch moment coefficient. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to investigate these findings and elucidate the flowfield in the grid fin region. The missile model was numerically modeled in Gridgen and computational tests were run in Fluent. Finally, another fin configuration was developed that produced less drag and similar dynamic stability that the other lattice grid fin configurations tested.

                                Book Description

This book deals with the application of fractal and nonlinear time-series analysis to seismicity and earthquakes within the framework of earthquake prediction research. Emphasis is on theoretical foundations as well as practical implementation and pitfalls to enable readers to conduct their own analyses. The theoretical parts include introductions to fractals and multifractals, the relation between fractal dimension and entropy, the Hurst phenomenon, basic ideas of low-dimensional chaotic dynamics and a roadmap of nonlinear time-series analysis. Practical implementation is discussed in each case and synthetic data sets are analyzed. Fractal methods are applied to landslide and seismicity patterns in space and time, nonlinear analysis is carried out for radon and strain data as well as earthquake intervals. Due to the comprehensive coverage of theoretical background and step-by-step applications, readers of all levels will benefit from this book.

This book gave the entire scoop on earthquakes and gave the realization of what really happens when earthquakes occur. It seems to be a well detailed book and gives you everything you've ever wanted or even not wanted to know. This includes death tolls, seismology, and the most prone places where these earthquakes occur. It's a great book and definetly makes you wonder: Earthquakes or Us?

Before writing this review, I read all of the others. It has pretty well all been said. Wonderful, innocent time in the US, quirky little girl, isolated community, town characters, mischief, madness, giggles, tears, a common chord with all who lived through those years at that age. More, more, more. We need more of Catho Darlington, Space Age hillbilly girl from the Ozarks Mountains: rockin' and rollin,' guffawing, hula hooping, marching in parades, tooting her flute, taking swings at bullies, riding in souped up cars with fins, suffering the consequences of permanent waves. So square it is hip!

5 out of 5 stars Quirky Young Girl is Irrepressable.......2004-05-11

Catho Darlington knows only one world--the tiny town she is growing up in in the Ozarks Mountains. I like the "local color"
of this book. I like the imagery provided by the author and
how she gets inside the head of the young girl to find the
voice of the book. Although there is a lot of narrative, it
really had to be written that way. I am familiar with the author's work and her first work was in poetry and some of it
slips into the novel. I believe the flavor of the 1950's is

captured genuinely. The study sheet for baby boomers in the
back of the book is a wonderful thought-provoker and memory
enhancer. I can see a sequel as Catho continues her quirky
adventures throughout her teenage years. Neato-keeno!

5 out of 5 stars An enjoyable and resonating tale of creativity.......2004-01-17

Catho Darlington: Lessons Learned In The Space Age by Sara Marie Hogg (an original and genuinely talented author) is an archetypal and entertaining novel of a quirky, imaginative young girl growing up in the Ozarks Mountains in the 1950's. Revealing an isolated community rich with tradition, and narrating the trials and tribulations of adolescence in a heartwarming style, Catho Darlington is an enjoyable and resonating tale of creativity, perseverence, and fun.
