The NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) was founded in 1884 by the Reverend Benjamin Waugh and is today the leading charity in England specialising in child protection and the prevention of cruelty to children. It is the only children's charity in the United Kingdom with statutory powers that enable it to take action to safeguard children at risk of abuse. Together with John Wiley the NSPCC have started a book series in child protection and policy with the aim of a practical application to research.
Evaluating family support is the result of a review and discussion of support for families on a national basis and the evaluation of that support. Ilan Katz, the team leader of the British Children's Fund prevention team and John Pinkerton, the head of the School of Social Work at the Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland, have together with 23 contributors looked at the need for international comparison in the evaluation of family support, the issues involved and studied the research available in countries like the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Hong Kong, New Zealand, America, Australia and Sweden.
This book shows the international or global perspective of family support with service and policy subject to constant tension that oftentimes undermine finding solutions for the problems facing the modern family, like the promotion of day care in other to have parents on the workforce versus the need for parents to spend quality time with their children. There has been a trend to think about an open or complex systems approach, where biological and social systems are not driven by equilibrium but by complex and constant change. Expensive for this price........2002-10-17

While it would be useful for begineers, I find most of the concepts are raher short and simply presented. I think the amount of information given does not worth to that price. Especially, section regarding writting macros and prograaming are very limited and mostly in psude-code style which doesn't help you gain the experience of excel preograaming.

Practical use of spreadsheets.......2001-06-13

Very helpful examples and good focus on fomulas, equation solving and statistical functions. Report writing section was useful as well.

Good, but overpriced.......1999-10-21

Liengme's guide to Excel is clearly written, has good illustrations, and contains a variety of useful examples. However, I don't know where they get $40 for this thin paperback. Orvis' Excel book is more complete and a better value.

An excellent source of information........1998-11-12

Finally someone has written a very clear concise book explaining Excel in terms that are relevant to scientists and Engineers. For the Engineer who is forced to program in Excel this book is an excellent source of information.

Decreasing power dissipation per logic function has become a primary concern in virtually all CMOS system chips designed today as a result of the relentless progress in processing technology that has led us into the deep-submicron age. Evolution from 1 micron to 0.1 micron lithography in the next decade will not be possible without a change in the way we design CMOS systems. But power reduction requires an overall optimisation, ranging from software compilation over instruction set design down to the introduction of much more parallelism in the architecture, the optimal use of memory hierarchy, new clocking strategies, use of asynchronous techniques, new CMOS circuit techniques and management of leakage currents in new low power technologies. Moreover, performance and power dissipation will come to be dominated by interconnect and thus completely new floor planning and place and route strategies are emerging.
The chapters in this book present a systematic coverage of deep submicron CMOS digital system design for low power, from process technology all the way up to software design and embedded software systems.

... darn the Dutch publishers. Just imagine paying 379 bucks for this book. Clearly outta reach. Someone must drive some sense into the publishers to make it affordable to professionals who have to slog hard to make their living ! The same goes for other Kluwer books as well.

Cudmore and Steve Dunn are co-producers of the WMHT public television documentary Amsterdam: Historic Views of the Carpet City, which the Albany Times Union called an "almost epic treatment" of its mill town subject. When the documentary premiered this summer, it broke fundraising records at WMHT. Stories from the documentary featured in Cudmore's book include chapters on Kirk Douglas, Amsterdam's Polish neighborhoods and the city's Italian neighborhood.

Other tales in You Can't Go Wrong are essays on radio, men's clothes and the indignities of middle age.

A Wary-eyed Look at Small Towns.......2000-04-26

I am a small town guy. Proudly. Almost always have been, physically. Always have been, emotionally. Sometimes choices and/or circumstances place me in big cities or greater (or lesser) suburbia. But - in my head - I am always "small town." We small town folks can recognize other small town people. By the way they talk, or by their opinions or simply by the way they always say hello, nodding to friend or stranger. We share similar problems, and we understand the good parts, too. Bob Cudmore knows both. His book, You Can't Go Wrong: Stories from Nero, NY, & Other Tales, is a marvelous recounting of small town philosophy and feeling, people and places. A small town guy, Cudmore's word paintings of small town characters and philosophies are flawless. Details quickly drawn, not many shades of gray, black strokes and white space for effect. The title, You Can't Go Wrong, reflects a fact: In most small, previously industrial towns, there is certain fatalism, sometimes tempered with what might be taken for hope. Take, for instance, retired mill worker Disease Cotter's statement that, "Used to be is a favorite phase in Nero." Don't all small town guys have nicknames? And, by the way, is there any small town where "used to be" isn't a favorite phrase? "There used to be a paper mill, two even, here." "Used to be" is how we connect our present to our past; it's where our roots and traditions were built. "Remember Lee? He used to be a three-letterman at the high school." Cudmore remembers how important sports are to a small town. Whether it's the five starters on the boy's basketball team or the 22 kids on the Lassie League team, those kids carry a ton of adult hopes and dreams. Win or lose (winning always is better), sports teams give the small town folks vicarious recognition, a place where the momentary light of the TV mention or the newspaper headline erases the shadows cast by the old, empty mill buildings and empty railroad tracks. Small towns like Nero have many other problems in common...urban renewal failures, the disappearance of local flavor as mergers, "big boxes" and other machinations combine to kill small businesses, the long-enduring negative mindset. But, Cudmore also draws out the good stuff about small towns and their inhabitants - the stuff that makes you realize you're lucky to live in a small town. Those of us who grew up in small towns revel in how successful our children are elsewhere. Wanda Tamburino, constituent problem-solver for Nero's popular Congressman, knows why: "Growing up in Nero prepares people for success anywhere else in the country where there are more opportunities than in the declining home town." Small town people also take care of those who hurt after any community disaster. "Our most endearing trait," Cudmore underscores, "is how we still take care of each other." "It never fails," asserts Cudmore, "life goes on," whether it's in Nero or some other place. Inherently suspicious of "new," "big," "different" and some "newcomers" for a while, small town folks survive despite the odds, the changes and the rest of the world. Cudmore captures the nobility of small town life and people with descriptions, commentary and anecdotes that made me roar at times and sigh loudly at others. It's going to be one Hell of a movie.
