Book Description
Crime and Punishment in Canada describes and analyses the nature and development of crime and punishment from pioneer days to the present. This broad synthesis examines the various types of crimes, where and by whom committed, and the changing nature of crime. The book analyses the ideas behind punishment, the variety of punishments, and the changes in the treatment of criminals. The book is divided into two parts. Part One examines the nature and variety of crime and criminals from the early settlement of New France and English Canada and continues to the present day. It also sets crime in the larger context of developments in such areas as immigration, urbanization, and changing technology. Separate chapters are devoted to women, juvenile crime, organised crime such as the mafia and motorcycle gangs, and white collar crime. Each chapter will feature a comprehensive account of criminal activity and an overview of its development. Colourful profiles of typical or particularly notorious criminals are also featured. Part Two examines the nature of punishment meted out to criminals. Starting with the European legacy, the book traces the main developments from early pioneer punishments, jails, the development and evolution of prisons, and a variety of rehabilitation programs.

Better Chewed Than Swallowed Whole.......2000-05-31
Peacefull Canada. A very cold socialist semi-utopia that most see as crime free.
While that narrow view may be true, this book reveals the seedy underbelly and noble brow of Candian justice.
This book is a tome. And if you like knowledge at the expense of buckets of gore then read this book. It is graphic enough to rivit your attention (if you skim a little), and very comprehensive.
In short - it is a critical criminology reference that isn't a total snoozer.

A view from the inside.......2005-04-01
I thought this was an excellent book from the view of a cfl official. It shows how seriously each of the officials take their jobs and the tradition of doing a good job. Although they had fun along the way, the job was always taken seriously. If you are interested in seeing the game from a different view, this is a very good book.

Cayley doubts that prisons are instruments of correction. Like all institutions they grow to a size which frustrates their original intention. To illustrate this he cites national (Canadian) and international examples of how prisons currently work. Cayley understands justice as peace making and incorporates into his arguments insights from critical thinkers whose notions are significant to prison reform. We are social beings prior to understanding ourselves as individuals, he notes, and suggests that a moral understanding of good and evil is necessary to obtain justice. He writes (p. 85) that "In a world without good, evil is secularized as crime." and "Justice without a sense of the good is darkened." Cayley offers excellent historical insights into the relationship between prison rehabilitation and Christianity that have implications for the future direction of the treatment of prisoners. The notion of 'truth as relational' (p. 323), which he attributes to Martin Buber, reveals a phenomenological understanding of justice. This understanding contrasts with the classical ideas of Aristotle and Aquinas which currently underpin concepts of justice. Anyone interested in the alternatives available for prison reform or the religious and pastoral care in prisons will find a wealth of information in Cayley's book.

excellent argument for penal reduction.......2001-01-13
Comprehensive book based on numerous interviews and extensive research. The author provides a very persuasive argument for penal reduction and explains how and why the rate of imprisonment in the West continues to grow steadily while crime rates are in fact decreasing. He also presents an good overview of alternatives to incarceration that have proven success (in direct contrast to the proven failure of imprisonment). I highly recommend this book.

Description:
The charge state of Fe in iron-gall inks was studied by ^5^7Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. Three ancient manuscripts from the 16th century and a set of model samples were characterized. The chemical fingerprint was found to be well defined for the ancient manuscripts whereas the model samples show a larger spread of chemical states. Two different modes of Mossbauer spectroscopy were used in this work: (1) the detection of @c-quanta in the usual transmission mode and (2) the detection of conversion electrons in backscattering geometry in a special parallel plate avalanche counter. The use of these two measuring modes allowed to reveal differences between the chemical features of the core and the surface of the iron-gall ink structures.

Energy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscopy (EFTEM) presents a summary of the electron optics, the electron-specimen interactions, and the operation and contrast modes of this new field of analytical electron microscopy. The electron optics of filter lenses and the progress in the correction of aberrations are discussed in detail. An evaluation of our present knowledge of plasmon losses and inner-shell ionisations is of increasing interest for a quantitative application of EFTEM in materials and life sciences. This can be realized not only by filtering the elastically scattered electrons but mainly by imgaging and analyzing with inelastically scattered electrons at different energy losses up to 2000 eV. The strength of EFTEM is the combination of the modes EELS, ESI, ESD and REM.
