The book of professor Pruppacher impress by the broad treatment of the subject. In spite of the fact that the author says in the foreword that it is not a complete approach to cloud physics, it reaches close to this goal. This is a fundamental book for all who wish to learn in depth cloud mycrophysics.

Following the first edition in 1978, this book is an updated and expanded (especially in cloud chemistry) version of this well-known textbook in cloud physics. It covers nearly every topics of cloud physics and chemistry (and aerosol physics as well)in great detail with extensive references (more than 60 pages!). Indispensable for anyone in cloud physics, atmospheric aerosol, and possibly climate scientists.

Description:
A one-dimensional model with size-resolved cloud microphysics is used to investigate possible reinforcement or inhibition effects of different concentrations of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) on precipitation formation in low-level, warm stratiform marine and continental clouds. Precipitation is found to be inhibited due to newly activated droplets when a precipitating marine cloud moves over a polluted environment with higher CCN concentrations. Precipitation can be initiated in a non-precipitating cloud having a high concentration of small droplets by seeding giant CCN (>1@mm in radius) into the cloud. Precipitation intensity in warm, stratiform clouds with and without background giant CCN differs little, implying very limited effects of background giant CCN on precipitation formation. The limited effects include a slightly slower precipitation formation, which is found to be caused by lower supersaturation, in clouds containing the background giant CCN compared to clouds without giant CCN. The delay of precipitation development is longer for continental clouds with high CCN concentration than for marine clouds with low CCN concentration. Sensitivity tests show that by increasing the giant CCN concentration an earlier precipitation can be initiated, especially in higher CCN concentration cases. It is concluded that the role of giant CCN on precipitation formation in warm, stratiform clouds is minor and is only important when concentrations of both the CCN and giant CCN (especially the largest CCN, e.g., >5@mm) are high.

Just turned forty and living alone, Tim Bannon is sliding comfortably into midlife crisis when his orphaned niece and nephew arrive on his doorstep.

As Tim marshals friends, colleagues, lawyers, and shrinks (Bannon's Queer Army of the Republic) to do battle against Earl and his folksy lawyer Merle, THE MT. MONADNOCK BLUES draws us deeper into an edgy, moving, and often hilarious family tale, played out against the backdrop of a glorious New England summer.

This book is set in the not too distant past when being gay meant you probably had AIDS, and AIDS was a real death sentence and this remains an undercurrent throughout the whole novel. Tom adores his niece and nephew and upon the death of his sister and husband learns he is appointed their guardian. There is strong resistance in his family and the novel takes you through his journey of trying to fight those who believe his lifestyle would not be ideal to raise children. The novel is a good read, though not necessarily enjoyable because it brings up the painful stereotypes that plagued the gay community in the 80s and early 90s and still affects them today. It is also difficult to see where reality is affected by these stereotypes in the gay community. But the book is definitely worth the journey into a a unique situation at a unique time in our recent history. The ending is a little too neatly tied, but it works on many levels.
