                  Book Description

Chemical processes have always been part of life. They enable our bodies to function and are the basis of countless substances and processes we take for granted. This intriguing book explores the world's natural chemistry - how we understand and exploit it.

From the first use of fire, people have practiced chemistry to produce food and drink, tan leather, make dyes for clothes and cosmetics, work metals, and produce glass and pottery. Today, chemicals help to purify our water, improve agriculture, and manufacture drugs, synthetic fabrics, and plastics. Our growing knowledge of the Earth's elements, the properties of atoms and DNA, and how substances interact has resulted in many new technologies, products, and scientific advances.

With stunning demonstrations of key experiments and ideas, Chemistry is a fresh and exciting introduction to the discoveries that have shaped and revolutionized our way of life.

Through the Eyewitness books, you can discover facts about chemistry, the traditions of ancient alchemy and the technology of today. Dr. Ann Newmark takes the reader on a journey through time and explores chemistry in the ancient world.

This is so much more than a book with chemistry lessons from a class, it is an exploration of history and explanation of chemical substances.

Chemistry in the Kitchen will make cooking more fun as you learn about yeast mixtures or find out what makes oranges orange.

                  Fun Facts:

A Spider's silk is stronger than a thread of similar thickness made of steel.
Glass may have been made in Egypt around 3000 BC by fusing sand, soda and lime.
Sage and Rosemary help to preserve foods
Bicarbonate of Soda can relieve the pain from a bee sting, but you would need
vinegar for a wasp sting (interesting reasons explained).

Subjects: The first chemists, elements, atoms and molecules, compounds, the periodic table, metals, nonmetals, air, burning reactions, noble gases, chemical reactions, oxidation and reduction, acids and bases, forming salts, electricity and chemistry, chemistry of carbon, organic synthesis, synthetic materials, chemical analysis and the chemical industry.

A timeline is helpful for understanding the context and a glossary gives more detailed information about ideas presented in this book.

On a certain page of "Matter" a callout next to a picture of a glass lens states that "glass flows over time". This is a widely believed myth that is simply not true. The "evidence" for the liquid nature of glass comes from old church and cathedral windows that appear to be thicker at the bottom as the glass has flowed over the centuries. This is not the case. Here is why they are thicker at the bottom:

"In Mediaeval times panes of glass were often made by the Crown glass process. A lump of molten glass was rolled, blown, expanded, flattened and finally spun into a disc before being cut into panes. The sheets were thicker towards the edge of the disc and were usually installed with the heavier side at the bottom."

Examples of other pieces of ancient glassware (Roman, etc.) exhibit no signs of glass "flow".

"Eyewitness Matter" tells everything about Matter. It has chapters on solid matter, liquid matter and gas matter, plus chapters on molecules in motion, crystals, hot matter and more! All of the chapters in the book have descriptive information on the topics in Matter. If you have gotten the other Eyewitness Science Series books, then make sure you have this one.

This book presents a state-of-the-art view of antimatter-matter chemistry and physics, with emphasis on the nanoscopic interactions of positronium atoms with ordinary matter. Selected applications are also discussed. The chapters present a summary of current knowledge in terms of both theory and experiment and as look to the future of research in this area. Book Description

The last few years have seen some remarkable advances in the understanding of atomic phenomena. It is now possible to isolate atomic systems in traps, measure in coincidence the fragments of collision processes, and by the use of storage rings produce and study multicharged ions; one can look at bulk matter in such a way that the fundamental atomic character is clearly evident, and work has begun to tease out the properties of antimatter. The papers in this book correspond to the invited talks at a conference dedicated to the study of all aspects of modern atomic physics. The meeting was designed both as a way of taking stock of what has been achieved and, it was hoped, as a means of stimulating new research, in new areas, along new lines. Consequently, an effort was made to touch on as many directions as possible. Amongst the topics included were: Coincidence studies of atomic collisions, hollow atom, clusters, atom traps, Bose-Einstein condensates, atomic interferometry, density functional theory, atomic physics with anti-matter and surface adsorbates. The papers in this book covered a wide range of topics in modern atomic physics. These topics were chosen to reflect some of the main new directions in research. An effort was made to identify novel approaches and areas of study which hold out the maximal potential for further developments.

                                        Book Description

The main purpose of this conference was to survey the new directions for solving QCD strong interaction problems and apply various approaches to the hadron physics where abundant experimental data are available. The world experts in theory and experiment presented the most recent development on diverse topics. The conference was useful especially to the young participants because they could see the variety of available new directions and gain some insight to pursue their future researches.

                                          Book Description

Soft X-rays are a powerful probe of matter. They interact selectively with electrons in atoms and molecules and can be used to study atomic physics, chemical reactions, surfaces and solids, and biological entities. Over the past 20 years, synchrotrons have emerged as powerful sources of soft X-rays for experimental use. A new, third generation of synchrotron light sources is scheduled to start operation over the next few years, beginning in 1993. These facilities are distinguished by their ultra-low emittance electron beams and by their undulators -- precisely engineered magnetic devices that cause the electrons passing through them to produce highly coherent X-rays and ultraviolet light of unprecedented spectral brightness. This volume emphasizes third-generation sources that produce light in the 10 eV--10 KeV energy range. It describes potential applications ranging from the purely scientific to the commercially viable and includes chapters on the practical aspects of designing undulators and beam line optics. Unique in its coverage, the book is a vital addition to the library of any scientist who needs information on the world's most advanced imaging and spectroscopic techniques.

                                          (ABSTRACT)
This volume emphasizes the applications of new third generation synchrotron radiation sources that produce light in the ultraviolet and soft X-ray range of the spectrum. The unprecedented brightness of this light enables experiments to be conducted with greatly increased spatial and spectral resolution. Scientists can exploit these properties for imaging and spectroscopic applications that until now were impossible or impractical. Prominent researchers in the field describe these applications and others made possible by the light's pulsed time structure and polarization. The volume also includes chapters on the practical aspects of designing undulators and beam line optics.
