Book Description

The 1980's witnessed the first step - change in managing the logistics function when stock centralization, contracting out and investment in technologies made a massive impact. The 1990's have experienced further changes that have been mainly concerned with incremental improvements and relationship changes. Retailers are now focusing on the whole supply chain instead of being primarily concerned with physical distribution management. The emphasis now is on quick response, efficient consumer response, category management and continuous replenishment - in short, the key is relationships. This new study presents a series of contributions from both academic researchers and industry specialists who share their research into retail logistics to provide a state-of-the-art/science report on the key issues for the 1990's. The book is up-to-date with changes in retail distribution and the recent transformation of retail logistics features company profiles of Safeway and Tesco, two of the most respected grocery logistics operations in the UK. It also discussed the internationalization of retailing and its impact on logistics strategy. Logistics and Retail Management is essential reading for both retail and logistics managers, professors, students and consultants, and proves that logistics excellence provides a fundamental competitive advantage. Description:
An activated carbon was prepared from durian shell and used for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. The activated carbon was prepared using chemical activation method with potassium hydroxide as the activating agent. The activation was conducted at 673.15K for 1h with mass ratio of chemical activating agent to durian shell 1:2. Batch kinetics and isotherm studies were conducted to evaluate the adsorption behavior of the activated carbon from durian shell. The adsorption experiments were carried out isothermally at three different temperatures. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model were used to describe the equilibria data. The Langmuir model agrees with experimental data well. The Langmuir surface kinetics, pseudo first order and pseudo second order models were used to evaluate the kinetics data and the rate constant were also determined. The experimental data fitted very well with the Langmuir surface kinetics and pseudo first order model.

                Description:
Oil palm fibre, an abundant agricultural by-product in Malaysia, was used to prepare activated carbon by physiochemical activation method. Adsorption isotherm of methylene blue onto the prepared activated carbon was determined by batch tests. The effects of various parameters such as contact time, initial methylene blue concentration and temperature were investigated, at solution pH of 6.5. The adsorption capacity was found to increase with increase in the three parameters studied. Equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. The equilibrium data were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm, with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 277.78mg/g at 30^oC. The adsorption kinetics was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Various thermodynamic parameters such as standard enthalpy (@DH^o), standard entropy (@DS^o) and standard free energy (@DG^o) were evaluated. Oil palm fibre-based activated carbon was shown to be a promising material for adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solutions.

From the author: The curing of an unsaturated polyester resin catalyzed with methylethylketone peroxide and cobalt octoate as promoter is studied by DSC at different heating rates. A high promoter/peroxide ratio is used. The DSC curves show two exothermic peaks. It has been assumed that they represent two independent cure reactions. A set of kinetic parameters for each DSC peak has been obtained. They describe the overall cure process using an empirical kinetic model. Nth order and autocatalytic kinetic functions have been employed. A computer program was developed to calculate the degrees of conversion associated with each peak, and to evaluate the kinetic parameters. The calculation algorithm uses the Runge-Kutta numerical integration and the 'downhill simplex method." This methodology permits to find all kinetic parameters simultaneously. DSC experimental data are very well fitted. The simulated first peak occurs always before the second one, and the fraction of reaction heat associated with the first peak over the overall reaction heat decreases with heating rate. Moreover, activation energies are in good agreement with the tabulated values for typical free radical polymerization induced by thermal and redox decomposition of the peroxides. POLYM. ENG. From the author: Free radical polymerization kinetics of diallyl terephthalate in bulk was investigated in a wide temperature range from 50[degrees]C to 150[degrees]C with four different peroxide initiators. Conversion points were measured using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) measurements. The initiator efficiencies and the initiator decomposition rate constants were evaluated from special experiments, applying the theory of dead end polymerization. In addition, the ratios between the degradative and the effective kinetic rate constants to propagation rate constants were obtained from molecular weight measurements at various initiator concentrations. The ratio of chemically controlled termination and propagation rate constant [k.sub.pc.sup.2]/[k.sub.tc] of the polymerization system was obtained using the initial rates of polymerization and the number average molecular weight data between 0.25 * [10.sup.-3] and 15.7 * [10.sup.-3] L [mol.sup.-1] [s.sup.-1]. The glass transition temperature of the polymer, 191[degrees]C, was measured by the Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetry (ADSC) technique. Computed conversions from the developed kinetic model were in good agreement with the conversion and molecular weight measured data. The values of diffusion controlled propagation and termination rate constants [k.sub.td0] and [k.sub.pd0] with clear and physical meaning were the only two parameters obtained from the developed kinetic model fitting. From the author: The aim of the present study is to provide a quantitative description of the significant changes observed in the rate of a free-radical crosslinking polymerization when varying the crosslinker concentration from 0 to 100%. The kinetics of the free-radical copolymerization of isobornyl methacrylate and diethylene glycol dimethacrylate, in the entire composition range, was determined by differential scanning calorimetry at 80[degrees]C, using benzoyl peroxide as initiator. A simple kinetic model describing initiation, propagation, and termination steps by relevant mechanisms was used to fit the experimental curves of rate of polymerization vs. time up to conversions close to the maximum in the polymerization rate. In this range, the initiator efficiency could be considered constant and radical trapping negligible, a fact that enabled to keep a minimum number of adjustable parameters. The simple kinetic model provided an explanation of the significant changes observed in the polymerization rate when changing the blend composition. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 46:1641-1648, 2006. Customer Reviews:

                              5 out of 5 stars Thermocouples.......2001-04-23

This is a very practical manual that gives excellent instructions with the uses of thermocouples. It simplifies the principles for the incidental user, yet it provides quality in-depth information for those who apply them in a wide range of situations. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who has an interest in science, particularly science relating to measurements.

5 out of 5 stars Finally - An excellent book about temperature.......2000-04-26

This is a set of books (3 parts). The writing is clear, logical and easy to understand but brings your knowledge level to a much higher level. The author writes not to impress the reader with his background or research but to teach the reader about the subject. Concepts, which I have read about in other books but did not really understand yet, are now clear. I altered my experimental setup and I now have a better measurement system. I purchased vol 3 (basically thermocouples), read it, then purchased and read parts 1 and 2.

                                                Book Description

In his first screenplay, Channel to the Guides, a suspense thriller—a young girl is contacted by a mysterious guide and seeks help from a psychic channeler to discover the spirit's true purpose. Together they open a channel to a higher realm and uncover clues to an unsolved murder. Now it's a race against time to reveal the deadly truth about one girl's tragedy as another girl's fate hangs in the balance.

With Betting on Baby Forte returns to comedy with characters and a story both provocative and emblematic of the human condition. A group of hard-luck, small-time gamblers scheme to win a baby contest. Traveling to Atlantic City to pitch the idea to a casino boss only complicates things, and now they must enlist the aid of their wives, leading down a slippery slope of lies and deceit.

In Redeeming the Graces Forte tells the dramatic tale of bitter irony, mystery, love and renewal about three people whose lives unwittingly meet and are changed. When the sole survivor of an apparent car accident seeks refuge in a quiet sanitarium, he is cared for by a kind nurse; then a dubious homicide detective intrudes into his life and brings him face to face with reality, playing out hidden secrets and truths.

An enjoyable book - it was fun to read screenplays from a local tri-state writer.... I especially enjoyed "Betting on Baby". Good luck with any future endeavors.

I thought these 3 screenplays were well written. As you read the stories, the description of the scenic mode and the characters causes the reader to imagine the scenes vividly in his mind. One of the stories is written with the typical slapstick comedy, which also adds a nice distraction and humor during the serious moments. Contained in this book are 3 screensplays: a mystery, a comedy and a romantic drama. I am looking forward to more stories from this author.
