When I first saw this book I wondered two things. First, how is the author's notion of "transformational outsourcing" any different than the time-tested, well-understood practice of handing over back-office or "non-core" business functions to a company that can perform them more cheaply. Second, why should a business leader should care?

I was surprised to learn from the author - a former Harvard Business School Prof and now a strategy research lead at Accenture - that most executives have fuzzy ideas about just what outsourcing means. Perhaps that's because there has not been a definitive outsourcing text or guru. Core Competency had Hamel and his groundbreaking Harvard Business Review article on the subject. Competitive Strategy had Porter and his opus on the topic. Disruptive Technology had Christensen and his best-selling, "Innovator's Dilemma." Dare I say that outsourcing, one of today's most popular and controversial management tools, finally has its own definitive book and guru.

Provocative, entertaining, and well-researched, Dr. Linder's brand of outsourcing has done for many firms what Bill Parcells' brand coaching has done for football teams: It creates big change fast. Parcells has taken three different NFL teams from sustained losses to playoff slots within two years of taking over as coach. Using detailed case studies of leading companies (Thomas Cook, National Savings & Investments, to name a few), Linder describes the Parcells-like influence a well-crafted transformation program can have on your organization.

But the devil is in the details, like how to execute a transformational outsourcing strategy...Linder's attention to execution and detail is precisely why executives should pay attention to the book. In my experience and research, CEOs have focused on outsourcing only insofar as it calls upon them to make four high-level calculations: determine whether the activity to outsource is core to the business; evaluate the financial impact of outsourcing; assess the non-financial costs and advantages of outsourcing; choose an outsourcing partner. But transformational outsourcing can't be done with a CEO at 30,000 feet.

Leaders need to get down into the trenches, and not leave all the dirty details of execution to middle management. Linder describes ten practical imperatives for CEOs to follow when implementing a transformational outsourcing initiative:

-Make the hard call
-Design a good business model, not a good deal
-Own the negotiation
-Allocate two full days a week of your won time for the foreseeable future
-Orchestrate a dynamic transition
-Create momentum
-Manage the relationship as if it were Chinese handcuffs
-Engineer a commitment to performance
-Face forward
-Recognize that you will underestimate the task, and plan accordingly

As these steps suggest, the book offers new wrinkles to the classic work of John Kotter (author of "Leading Change"), while also laying the theoretical and practical groundwork for a novel approach to improving business results. I recommend the book to practitioners, academics, anyone interested in the current outsourcing debate...and especially senior executives.

A New Tool Not To Be Missed.......2004-04-28

Imagine your CEO came to you and said, "unless we dramatically lower our costs, improve our products, build a stronger customer base, change our image, and add professional capabilities, and do all of this in 24 months, we have no value left." Totally crushed by the seemingly impossible nature of the task, you emerge from the encounter only to meet a seasoned management consultant who approaches you and says, "I have a tool that will accomplish exactly what your CEO wants to do, and this tool has an 85% success rate." Sound pretty incredible? You bet! Worth listening to? Absolutely. Then you should read Jane Linder's path breaking book, "Outsourcing for Radical Change: A Bold Approach to Enterprise Transformation."

Unlike so many management books with pretentious claims that leave the reader wondering, "how would that actually work in the real world," Ms. Linder, to her credit, leaves little to the reader's imagination. The book is filled with example after example, and draws on an immense body of domestic and international data and case examples to support her arguments. What I especially liked about the book was that it not only addressed the questions and issues of C-level management, but it was very grounded in operations and implementation issues -- how do you make transformational outsourcing work for you, day-in and day-out and what are the implementation issues and traps to watch out for? I also appreciated the book's focus on how transformational outsourcing can be successfully applied in both the private and public sector. For those of you who thought you knew what outsourcing is all about, or who are looking new and radical ways to achieve breakthrough results, I highly recommend reading this book.

A real disappointment.......2004-04-25

I was expecting a lot more insight into the management challenges and practice of outsourcing from someone working for Accenture.

The key message of the book that outsourcing should be seen as a transformation force is great in theory but extremely difficult to implement. The insight into how this is done in the political real-world workplace is missing. The case studies presented in this book left me with a view that the author was retrofitting the transformation story on various projects.

must read for senior executives........2004-04-04

Before I read this book, I thought that Outsourcing was for corporate functions that we wanted to "get rid of". Now I realize that the true power of Outsourcing is in finding effective ways to partner and implement sweeping changes to CORE functions.

This book covers the process of Transformational Outsourcing in detail with real examples.

Excellent: Ferrets 101.......1999-11-05

Although I liked the companion book (Training Your Pet Ferret) more, this is an excellent concise guide for someone who knows nothing about ferrets. This is not a book for anyone who has even a working knowledge about ferret behavior. But then again I haven't found a good guide yet that goes in depth into ferret matters for those of us who know the basics about them, but would like to know more.

While some of the information is unique to this book (like the part about ferret sounds and body language) there are some alarming errors (a ferret should NEVER be housed in an aquarium!). Use it as an additional reference, but not your primary one. You should have several different sources to refer to anyway.

10 Years Hardly Made Any Difference.......1999-04-23

There are many more up-to-date reference books on the Domestic Pet Ferret. It's an add to my Ferret book collection only. I recommend researching all books available before deciding to be owned by Ferrets.

Please don't buy this book, you may hurt your Ferret!.......1999-01-11

As a keeper of Ferrets here in England I was appalled when I was given this book as a present for Christmas 98'. There are a number of really quite harmful and cruel elements to this book This could not be further from the truth. The Ferret is a highly social animal and they should really be kept in a minimum of threes, two females and a male.

De-scenting. This is a highly controversial prac n integral part of the animals communication system and to remove them just for the delicate nostrils of the owner is really very unfair on the animal.

To say that Ferrets release odour when in fear of their life is quite innaccurate. Ferrets release an odour when they are excited, prior to eating, before hunting or going for a walk.

Within the book the subject of housing the Ferret is not covered at all satisfatorily, to suggest that a Ferret needs a cage of only 10 inches in height is cruel. Ferrets are climbers by ntaure and mine reguarly climb the seven feet to the top of their 6 foot by 6 foot court. There is scant reference to the correct size and positioning of an outdoor court and cub.

I could go on, but frankly the 1000 word limit is rapidly running out. But for those die hards amongst you who rate this book, just refer to the "My tip" on page 23, advising the reader "never to strike the Ferret's body" This lady must really have been struggling for something to write if she thinks that the average Ferret loving reader would hit such a small animal!

The picture of the "White-footed butterscotch" on page 41 is further testament to this authors own ineptitude, either if this Ferret is her own or the picture is from a library, it should never have been used in a reference book. The poor animal's nails are clearly too long and should have been t rimmed, if they grow much further they'll grow back under themselves! Poor Ferret.

One thing this "guide" is not is complete!

In short, don't waste your money. There has to be a much better guide out there somwhere! By the way, the only reason I gave this book one star is because the review software won't let you choose none!

This is a centenary biography that commemorates the hundredth birthday of Dr. Linus Carl Pauling (February 1901 to August 1994). He was the only person to win two unshared Nobel Prizes.

This book has a number of good features:

(1) THE EDITORS' HONESTY. This slim book, as the editors state in the preface, does not do "complete justice to Linus Pauling's enormous life work" but is intended to give readers an "intriguing taste of his interests and accomplishments."

(2) THE GOOD AND BAD. Be aware that this book not only has contributions from Pauling's friends, colleagues, and former students but also has contributions from his detractors and those who thought he was over-stepping his scientific boundaries.

(3) ARTICLES. This is not your typical narrative biography! It is divided into four parts and the first three parts is a series of articles. (I use the word "article" loosely to mean an essay, a chronology, diary excerpts, interview transcript, public speech transcript, letter, Nobel lecture transcript, book excerpt, journal excerpt, or television transcript.)

Articles are written in the first person by Pauling himself or in the third person by others. Before each article is a small italicized paragraph written by the editors. The purpose of this is to put each article into proper context with respect to time, place, and importance.

(4) THE BOOK'S STRUCTURE. This book has four parts titled as follows:

(i) "The Man." It presents the personal side and overall personality of Pauling. It consists of nine articles, five of which were written by Pauling at various times in his life. Note that Pauling had a wife named Ava Helen and four children.

(ii) "The Science." It details the scientific genius of Pauling. It consists of twelve articles, six written by Pauling. These science articles are not difficult to follow. Pauling won the 1954 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Specifically he won it "for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application to the elucidation of the structure of complex substances."

(iii) "The Peace Work." It discusses Pauling's anti-nuclear peace work. It consists of six articles, all of them written by Pauling. Pauling won the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize "for his efforts to end open-air testing of nuclear weapons."

(iv) "Facets." It gives us various brief snippets of Pauling in the form of historical reminiscences or short anecdotes not only written by Pauling but by others (such as family members, friends, and colleagues). There are over forty of these that were written or said during his lifetime or after his death.

(5) PICTURES. Over eighty are peppered throughout the book. When I say pictures, I mean black-and-white photographs; sketches; and reproduced, readable notes, manuscripts, letters, and textbook covers. There's even a reproduction of the Paulings' famous and controversial nuclear weapon's petition!

(6) MARGINALIA. In the margins of the book, there are short anecdotes (shorter than those mentioned in the "Facets" section above). These are based on taped interviews with colleagues and contemporaries. There are over thirty of these scattered throughout the book.

(7) BIBLIOGRAPHY. Finally there is a useful selected bibliography. It consists of a significant list of articles written by Pauling and important books written by him. (My favorite book written by him is entitled "How to Live Longer and Feel Better" (1986).) There is also a list of books and articles written about Pauling.

One of my favorite articles was in the science part. This article details the race to find the structure of DNA. According to Pauling, Dr. Rosalind Franklin's scientific work and X-ray photographs (which he never had access too) were the key that unlocked DNA's double helix structure.

In conclusion, if you want a multi-dimensional portrait of a two-time Nobel Prize winner who was the recipient of numerous awards and medals and, as well, for those who want a unique reading experience where you can form your OWN picture of this brilliant man, then peruse this fascinating book.

Superb introduction to sedimentary rocks and structures........2006-09-08

This book is one of the best introductions to sedimentary rocks and their structures that I have come across in 25 years.
It begins with a section on the structures found in sedimentary rocks. The diagrams are clear, concise, and very well explained. The photographs that go with them are among the best I've seen for demonstrating sedimentary structures. They are almost professional in their quality, and the features you are meant to see are actually visible in the photos (no 'eye of faith' required, unlike some other textbooks).
The rest of the book is divided into chapters dealing with each group of sedimentary rocks in turn. Ironstones, conglomerates, evaporites, limestones: you name it, it's in there. Again, the diagrams and photographs are faultless.
Finally, the book finishes with a section on how to interpret sedimentary structures in the field.
If only this book had been available when I was an undergraduate! I would thoroughly recommend this book to any undergraduate (or even post-graduate) geology student as the first thing to pack in their bag before setting off on field work.
As a final thought for geology students, the University of Southampton (where Dr. Stow works) has a superb website on the geology of the south coast of England. If you like the book, you'll love the website.

A great read (and excellent points).......2007-03-28

This is another book I've read cover to cover numerous times and never got around to reviewing. The author was a lesbian columnist in the early 1990s, and her writings are a snapshot of lesbian culture from that time period. Pat Califia, the Face on Mars, "Bambi"-as-patriarchal-propaganda, gays in the military, and the Michigan Woman's Music Festival are just a few of the many topics that get drawn into Harper's amazingly humorous commentary on society both within and outside the lesbian community.

Her voice is incredibly positive for the most part. While she doesn't deny the homophobic society of the time, she pokes light-hearted fun at it while making very important points about changes that need to be made (and are still relevant today). She is the Trickster incarnate--making you laugh and think at the very same time.
