            Book Description

Contemporary in perspective, this user-friendly introduction to foodservice procurement -- purchasing, receiving, storage, and inventory control -- emphasizes that purchasing 1) is the first step in preparing menu items that satisfy customers, and 2> is not a cost center in the operation (as it was for many years), but that it contributes to the profit, and that every dollar saved is a dollar profit. Stresses the importance of the procurement unit in the foodservice operation -- that purchasing, receiving, storage, and inventory control are the base of the entire operation. Explains how to make decisions about which products meet the quality standards required by the customer and at the same time find the lowest price for a product. Emphasizes the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point system. Uses the Food Guide Pyramid as the conceptual framework for the food section. Discusses how processing or manufacturing and marketing or distribution, exclusive of the cost of materials, packaging, and overhead, can add value to products and increase profits. For those preparing to work in a commercial or noncommercial foodservice.

                            Book Description

The United Nations peacekeeping has evolved as a practical measure for preserving international peace and security. Recent peacekeeping has two important features: the use of force which arguably exceeds self-defence on the one hand, and multifunctional operations on the other. The Security Council has started considering a wide range of factors including serious human rights violations as threats to international peace and security. Recognising the UN's principle to seek peaceful settlement which underlies the legality of peacekeeping, this research focuses on the human rights functions of multifunctional peacekeeping operations. Such functions have immense potential for enhancing conflict resolution through peaceful means. In order to illustrate these issues and the diverse practice of UN peacekeeping, the author of this book has dealt with four detailed case studies on El Salvador, Cambodia, Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia. The achievements, problems and defects experienced by different operations are analysed using the insights of the author's own experience in a peacekeeping operation.

                            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Important for Peacekeeping in the UN context.......2004-04-29

The purpose of this book is to analyse UN peacekeeping operations focusing particularly on human rights functions, and to seek to develop a better design for such functions in future operations: The book starts by reviewing the UN mechanism for international peace and security in Chapter 1. The role of the Security Council and the General Assembly in the mechanism will be discussed, and the origins of United Nations peace-keeping will be studied by means of four case-studies of observation missions and peacekeeping missions. Also, an examination will be made in Chapter 1 of the constitutional basis of United Nations peacekeeping operations, as well as the competence of the Security Council and of the General Assembly to create peacekeeping forces, and of the role of the Secretary-General in the area of international peace and security. The lastsection of Chapter 1 will deal with peacekeeping operations by regional arrangements or agencies in the context of Chapter VIII of the UN Charter.
Chapter 2 commences with a historical overview of the United Nations peacekeeping operations. An extensive review of varied definitions and theories of peacekeeping will follow which illustrates the evolution of United Nations peacekeeping operations. The review demonstrates that two features can be found in peacekeeping operations after the end of the Cold War, as described above. To clarify the concept of peacekeeping, the legal distinction between peacekeeping and enforcement action will be discussed. Chapter 2 concludes with a focus on non-military functions of peacekeeping, which in practice contains peacemaking and peace-building functions. Human rights are essential elements of such functions. The first two chapters thus explain how the Organisation reached the point of being largely involved in human rights work within the framework of peacekeeping.
The four chapters thereafter are devoted to case-studies. These chapters contain a detailed examination of the actual human rights activities per-formed in four different areas of the world by UN peacekeeping missions or a UN human rights field operation. The areas being examined are El Salvador, Cambodia, Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia. The operations in each area approached and challenged the human rights problems differently, which shows that there has been a consistent lack of effort by the Organisation to study and make use of the skills and experience gained in preceding operations.' Several points of analysis will be set up for examination in each case-study for the purpose of enabling a comparison of similar functions in different operations. One important factor for future peacekeeping operations when they undertake human rights functions will inevitably be institution-building, such as the reform of the judicial system or the restructuring and training of police forces. Peacekeeping, as a temporary measure to create the environment for sustainable peace, needs to assist in the establishment of domestic structures and mechanisms which
protect and promote human rights. As is manifest in the case of the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH), institution-building is becoming an integral part of peacekeeping.'
Chapter 7 considers the possibility of the use of force in protecting human rights. Given that the presence of UN peacekeepers did not succeed in protecting civilian lives either in Rwanda or Srebrenica (Bosnia-Herzegovina), we will examine the recent practice of the Security Council of contracting out enforcement operations to volunteering states. We will also consider the "humanitarian intervention", unilateral or multilateral intervention by one or more states without any authorisation from the UN Security Council. The problem represents a deviation from collective security as envisaged in the UN Charter. Seeking the possibility that peace-keeping forces can contribute in protecting human rights through non-military means, the potential role of peacekeepers as a "protecting power" will be studied. The potential of peacekeepers to carry out human rights functions will also be discussed.

                              3 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings.......2005-05-19

I had this book for Inorganic I at Northern Illinois University.

While it did a good job of describing the chemistry of the various groups, it did a poor job of systematizing reactions (such as classifying them as Lewis Acid/Base or Hard Acid/Base reactions.

It had a good explanation of VSEPR but totally botched MO theory.

A decent text. I hope better ones exist.

4 out of 5 stars Best overall text.......2003-05-19

I had the first edition of this book as a student and used it my first years teaching inorganic chemistry before I tried other books. The reason I left this text to try others is that there is just so much information here and not the best organization for the order in which I teach inorganic. However, that being said, I am now returning to this classic from Cotton, Wilkinson & Gaus. The main reason being I had fewer student complaints about the text when I used this book vs. the others. As other reviewers mentioned, the text is encyclopedic! And you end up jumping around to find what you want; however, Cotton et al. has the most complete volume for the undergraduate & beginning graduate course, so that you can pick & choose what you want to cover without much problem. For those with a descriptive bent, there are many descriptive chemistry chapters. For others who have a bit more physical inorganic bent, there is good coverage of those topics. I've used texts on both ends of the spectrum, and I found they only pleased a small portion of the students, while others struggled. This book has everything you want in a beginning course, and more (!) while being flexible enough that you can design your own course by picking chapters to cover. Finally, for the student, it is an excellent reference to keep for the future.

3 out of 5 stars Good Reference and well written, BUT...........2000-11-17

Presents a good overview on most of the elements. The basic edition is realy the same as the Advanced edition but with some of the Transition Metal stuff tossed out... I wouldn't buy the Adv. Edition, unless the school was shoving it down my throat... Not that this is bad, but I think that there are WAY WAY WAY better books on the subject of Trz. Complexes and Mechanisms (Spessard comes to mind in the fantastic "Organometallic Chemistry"). It is undeniable that FA Cotton can really write well and that the man is a genius on the subject, hell the guy lived through the glory years of Inorganic, but the book never really shows people what really happens mechanistically in the book... Everything is presented in an encyclopedic fashion, which sometimes makes things ambiguous... I think that this is a landmark of a book, but one that is really a first reference on a particular subject...

5 out of 5 stars Great text for introductory inorganic chemistry textbooks.......2000-10-31

This textbook is written in an easy to follow matter unlike other inorganic textbooks in the market that is harder to understand. It gives good examples for an introductory course especially for first year University students. The only downside is that, advanced concepts are not or insufficiently discussed. But in the Advanced Inorganic Chemistry textbook by the same author, these concepts are discussed in more depth. I would recommend that any student who is interesed in inorganic chemistry should get both the basic inorganic and advanced inorganic textbooks .With these two books you should have no problem understanding the wide topic of inorganic chemistry.By using an introductory and an advanced text, the student is slowly introduced to the topic.Instead of being thrown headon into reading and understanding a single inorganic chemistry book

1 out of 5 stars Not the Softcover Edition of Basic Inorganic Chemistry.......2000-04-20

The buyer of this book may be mislead by its description. This is not the softcover edition of Basic Inorganic Chemistry, but the Solutions Manual for Basic Inorganic Chemistry. It is virtually useless without the pricey hardcover companion text. I would not recommend it unless you already own the companion text.

                                  Book Description

The first half deals with the motion of a single particle under the influence of electronic and magnetic fields. The basic language of linear and circular accelerators is developed. The principle of phase stability is introduced along with phase oscillations in linear accelerators and synchrotrons. Presents a treatment of betatron oscillations followed by an excursion into nonlinear dynamics and its application to accelerators. The second half discusses intensity dependent effects, particularly space charge and coherent instabilities. Includes tables of parameters for a selection of accelerators which are used in the numerous problems provided at the end of each chapter.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction.......2000-05-18

This book is a superb introduction to the field of acclereator physics. Starting with a basic knowledge of relativity and E&M is all that is necessary. Edwards and Syphers do a great job of "building" an accelerator in their book and using operating parameters of real world accelerators (mostly the Tevatron) for their numerical examples.

My only complaint is that some of the problems could be worded more clearly and concisely

                                        Product Description

Introduction to Molecular Beams Gas Dynamics is devoted to the theory and phenomenology of supersonic molecular beams. The book describes the main physical idea and mathematical methods of the gas dynamics of molecular beams, while the detailed derivation of results and equations is accompanied by an explanation of their physical meaning. The phenomenology of supersonic beams can appear complex to those not experienced in supersonic gas dynamics and the few existing reviews on the topic generally presume specific knowledge of the subject. The book begins with a quantitative description of the fundamental laws of gas dynamics and goes on to explain such phenomena. It analyzes the evolution of the gas jet from the continuum to the regime of almost free collisions between molecules, and includes numerous figures, illustrations, tables and references.

Before you send your kids to college, read this. In this classic struggle between a misguided history professor who can't tolerate hypocrisy in others and a semi-born-again college president who wants to rid the campus of all eccentrics because they think too much, see how the failure to understand anything can lead to great success.

At Armageddon International University readers will meet the lunatic fringes of college life. In these pages they will follow Phineas Finkel as he educates students for a future they will never see, leads the faculty on a failed assault against the college's president that they will always regret and gives strategic advice to the board of directors that they might wish to avoid. Undaunted, Phineas Finkel organizes a union of staff members to defend rights they don't want and leads a revolution against the college's administration, while impersonating Napoleon, toward a goal he can't understand.
