Book Description
Enhancing Procurement Practices is organised around four main points:
-overview and analysis of procurement principles,
-practical approach to drafting of solicitation and contract documents,
-conduct of procurement procedures,
-overview of the e-procurement arena.
Although the addressed procurement methods can be used on a wide scale, this book concentrates primarily on such cases when the subject of procurement is complex, or the solicited goods and services are relatively simple but the intended long-term relationship calls for a fairly conscious source selection. Project procurement, the most complicated form of buying civil engineering work, goods, and services, is thoroughly addressed.
Beyond the structured overview and comparative analysis of terminology and principles, the book describes such new concepts as single-source preference for simultaneous procurements, dual-term frame contract for parallel suppliers, and the use of semi-consolidated contract documents. Effective utilisation of theories boils down - among others - to a consistent set of procurement-related terms, proven methodology for drafting comprehensive solicitation documents and contracts, and practical details of communication with offerors.

Book Description
Kantianism, Postmodernism and Critical Legal Thought presents a challenging alternative theory of legal philosophy. The central thesis of the book suggests an accommodation between three of the most influential contemporary theories of law, Kantianism, postmodernism and critical legal thought. In doing so, it further suggests that the often perceived distance between these theories of law disguises a common intellectual foundation. This foundation lies in the work of Immanuel Kant.
Kantianism, Postmodernism and Critical Legal Thought presents an intellectual history of critical legal thinking, beginning with Kant, and then proceeding through philosphers and legal theorists as diverse as Heidegger and Arendt, Foucault and Derrida, Rorty and Rawls, and Unger and Dworkin. Ultimately, it will be suggested that each of these philosophers is writing within a common intellectual tradition, and that by concentrating on the commonality of this tradition, contemporary legal theory can better appreciate the reconstructive potential of the critical legal project.

Book Description
It has become clear that soil water repellency is much more wide-spread than formerly thought. Water repellency has been reported in most continents of the world for varying land uses and climatic conditions. Soil water repellency often leads to severe runoff and erosion, rapid leaching of surface-applied agrichemicals, and losses of water and nutrient availability for crops. At present, no optimum management strategies exist for water repellent soils, focusing on minimizing environmental risks while maintaining crop production.
The book starts with a historical overview of water repellency research, followed by seven thematic sections covering 26 research chapters. The first section discusses the origin, the second the assessment, and the third the occurrence and hydrological implications of soil water repellency. The fourth section is devoted to the effect of fire on water repellency, section five deals with the physics and modeling of flow and transport in water repellent soils, section six presents amelioration techniques and farming strategies to combat soil water repellency, and section seven concludes the book with an extensive bibliography on soil water repellency.

Book Description
Although dynamical mechanical analysis or spectroscopy has left the domain of the rheologist and has become a prevalent tool in the analytical laboratory, it is still common to hear, "What is DMA, and what will it tell me?" or "I think I could use a DMA, but I cannot justify its cost." Previously, the novice in the field had to sort through texts on thermal analysis, rheology, and materials science just to find basic information - until now. This book provides the chemist, chemical engineer, or materials scientist with a starting point to understand the applications of dynamic mechanical analysis, its workings, and its advantages and limitations. Discussions include: · rheological concepts · stress-strain · data handling · experimental techniques and considerations · test methods, such as frequency sweeps and time-temperature curves · data analysis
Customer Reviews:
It may help yr experiment.......2006-07-03
The clear text will guide my experiment in composites.
The DMA technique may be helpful on several materials dynamic-mechanical characterization and this book introduces the why and how to.
Good investment to my thesis!
What I needed, when I needed it.......2001-09-27
I needed to get up to speed on DMA fast and I got what I needed. It didn't provide all the info I required for my specific application (submicron thin films) but it did provide a sound foundation for further investigation. This is truly what it claims to be, a practical introduction, many thanks to the author.
Finally! The Book That Spells Out The Answers To Questions........2000-02-09
I spent many hours researching for a Thermal Mechanical textbook that was packed full of "Get Down To The Point Answers". Let's face it, there are not many current Thermal Analysis textbooks for sale. The books I've seen are too scrambled with no understanding at the end. This book was VERY informative, and it answered my questions. Special Thanks to the author. Please write many more books with the same intentions in mind: "We would like to understand and learn from what we read"! Thank You!

I ordered this book based on the other review here onamazon.com and was looking for a bit more. A fair bit of the contentis already covered by free application notes on the web and sales literature that the makers of DMA instrumentation pass out for free. If your looking for a solid treatment of the polymer physics of DMA testing, that's not this book; maybe it hasn't been written yet. If you just want to relate DMA testing to real world environments and effects, then there aren't enough good examples in the book or a method to make this book worth the price.
This would make an acceptable guide for a technician who was just introduced to a DMA - I was looking for more.

Book Description
How to predict thermoplastics behavior in high-performance structural applications Here's the very first engineering resource with all the data and design/analysis techniques you need to work with even the newest thermoplastics. Structural Analysis of Thermoplastic Components by Gerry Trantina and Ron Nimmer shows you how to predict stiffness, creep and fatigue of polymeric components--PLUS non-homogeneous materials such as structural foams and composites. You'll benefit from detailed comparisons of analytic prediction versus measured behavior and much more: Nonstandard property measurement and analysis; Nonlinearities associated with large deformations; Using structural geometry to offset low material stiffness; Designing thermoplastics to withstand impacts; Important loading variables, component lifetimes, frequency effects, hysteric heating and cyclic crack growth.
Book Description
Thermal Analysis of Polymeric Materials systematically treats macroscopic measurements by thermal analysis and the quantitative link to microscopic, molecular structure and mobility. Reversible and irreversible thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum mechanics, and statistical thermodynamics are the roots of the described thermal analysis. The book aims to broaden readers’ understanding of materials and the connection of flexible macromolecules (polymers) to small molecules and rigid macromolecules (minerals, salts, and metals). An effort is made to discover how the long, flexible molecules fit into their small phases which are characterized as microphases or nanophases. Their order ranges from amorphous to mesophase-like and crystalline. Ultimately, it is shown that the basic structure-property-processing triangle is connected to the better-known types of molecules and their common macroscopic phases.
Customer Reviews:
Content.......2007-01-03
I was disappointed with the content of the book. It is largely about the history and general principles. It did not get into methodology or details about polymers themselves. It may be good for the classroom, but is lacking for industry use.

From the supplier: Observing how plastic roofing materials react to different temperatures over time can yield fast and accurate information concerning a material's stability. Important measurements include changes in mass, heat retention, strain, and shape. The thermal analysis demonstrates the stability of polyvinyl chloride and ethylene-propylene-diene monomer roofing materials. While thermal analysis has yet to become commonplace in the roofing industry, it is growing in usage.

From the author: One of the most important processing operations in the fabrication of honeycomb composite structures is the forming of the honeycomb core. High performance honeycomb structures must be precisely formed, or contoured, in order to meet the strict dimensional specifications required by the end user of the core. However, in the composites industry today, there is no basic understanding of the high temperature behavior of honeycomb materials, which is fundamental to understanding the commercial processing of honeycomb composite structures. In this study, the thermal and mechanical responses of Nomex[R]-based honeycomb core were investigated and characterized through thermal analysis. In the ribbon direction of the core, specific post-cure temperatures were identified where the honeycomb core displayed a maximum degree of creep. In the expanded direction of the honeycomb, the core displayed no maximum-creep temperature. This behavior was attributed to the degradation of the node adhesive. A honeycomb creep time constant ([[Tau].sub.c]) was also defined and evaluated as a function of the honeycomb post-cure temperature. From this analysis, the softening of the dip resin was determined to play a larger role in creeping and deforming the core than the mechanical properties of the Nomex substrate.

From the author: The temperature dependence of resistivity, structure, and thermal expansion of composites based on polyethylene/polyoxymethylene (PE/POM) blends filled with dispersed iron (Fe) have been studied. The dependence of conductivity on filler content shows percolation behavior, with the values of the percolation thresholds equal to 21 vol% for PE-Fe, 24 vol% for POM-Fe, and 9 vol% for the filled blend PE/POM-Fe, with two-step character of the conductivity curve. The evolution of structure of the composite PE/POM-Fe demonstrates transition from polymer matrix POM-Fe, with inclusions of PE through cocontinuous phases of both POM-Fe and PE, to PE matrix, with inclusions of POM-Fe. Such a structure occurs due to localization of the filler only in one of the polymer phases, namely in POM. Measurements of the coefficient of thermal expansion [alpha] show the presence of two values of [alpha]: higher value (equal to [alpha] of PE) and lower value (equal to [alpha] of POM-Fe), the transition between them corresponding to the structure with cocontinuous phases. The PE/POM-Fe composites demonstrate double-positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect, with the presence of two transitions and a plateau between them. In such a system, two contributions to the PTC effect coexist: the first contribution originates from the thermal expansion of the nonconductive PE phase with higher value of the coefficient [alpha], which leads to the break of the continuity of the conductive POM-Fe phase; the second contribution originates from the break of the conductive structure of the filler inside the POM-Fe phase because of the morphological changes in the vicinity of the melting temperature of POM. The double PTC effect is explained in terms of these two processes (thermal expansion and melting). POLYM. ENG. SCI., 47:34-42, 2007. [c] 2006 Society of Plastics Engineers

Book Description
A Tall Tale is aptly named in this fun story chronicling the final round of golf in a company tournament, where Scotty Jones is playing for the pride of the workers, as well as the coveted vacation to Slappyworld, against the arrogance and chicanery of the boss's son. Golf gods and marvelously illustrated characters highlight this memorable romp through the short grass.
Customer Reviews:
Hey FOX, this would make a great aminated series........1999-07-09
This book is a joy to read. I've been in these situations far to often and unfortunately never encountered the "TEAM". I'm afraid I'd wear out poor Sarge. The illustrator did a marvelous job bringing these characters to life. I found myself day dreaming during the read, imaging all kinds of situations I'd been in and how MacDuff and his team would have helped extracate me. I though I'd fall off my chair laughing when MacDuff said Jake looked like a zeppelin. There are a lot of great one liners in this book I'll certainly use. The author's sense of humor is as he says, "slightly off centered". He is obviously an avid golfer because he did a great job of describing these characters and the need most golfers have for them. I think golfers and non golfers alike will find this a great read. This story would make a great animated series for TV.
