Book Description

Guiding Change Journeys, a title in The Practicing Organization Development Series, takes you on a cross-cultural odyssey of personal and organization transformation. Inspired by science, mythology, and real-life lessons, this hands-on resource offers eight compelling transformation cycles that will help you connect with the universal creative spirit within and around us. Each of the change cycles focuses on a specific practice in global organization development (OD) and gives you the insights and methods to guide transformation through uncharted territory. By applying the book's eight practices--awakening, pathfinding, adventuring, dancing with dragons, compassion, epiphany, synergy, and community--you can effect powerful change.

Author Rebecca Chan Allen tells stories of change leaders and facilitators, confronted by business volatility and organization diversity, who use timeless techniques to transform impasse into innovation and conflicts into creativity. Guiding Change Journeys invites you to embrace the unknown and venture into new territory with clarity and confidence.

"Rebecca Chan Allen has created an exciting road map for a journey of change. Her landscape is complete with dragons, deep pits, and pathfinders to stimulate both the guide and the process of organization change."

5 out of 5 stars A review of "Guiding Change Journeys" by Rebecca Chan Allen.......2002-01-24

Finally!... A book providing both practical guidance AND sound theoretical reference materials for change leaders and organizational effectiveness practitioners. Chan Allen's book is clearly organized, easy to use, and accessible at whatever level of conceptual depth her reader wishes to work (or to start from). Her examples are creative, original and fun to use -- in both professional and personal contexts. I highly recommend this for organization development professionals and those interested in transformation methodology.

5 out of 5 stars A "must read" in the field of organizational change!.......2001-12-01

One of the greatest challenges an author can undertake is to write a book that is both theoretically complex and strongly pragmatic. Rebecca Chan Allen has accomplished this in Guiding Change Journeys. In combining the philosophical underpinnings and conceptual bases of a wide variety of organizational change strategies with practical approaches, examples, exercises and illustrations, she skillfully supports change practitioners in integrating Eastern and Western perspectives. Through her integration of stories from mythology and concepts from organization development, new science and wisdom traditions, Chan Allen takes us on an "Archetypal change Journey" based on Jungian archetypes, which describe enduring patterns of transformation.

In a spirit of integration, the book implies throughout that successful organizational change is dependent upon individual and group psychological approaches, conceptualized within a systemic framework. The author's intention seems ultimately holistic, in that she continually addresses issues of mind/body/spirit, whether individually or organizationally.

Though the book may seem esoteric and philosophically dense at times, it carefully balances the more theoretical introductions to each chapter with a plethora of practical examples and exercises, which bring the theory to life and make the concepts infinitely usable. The overall impression is a treasure-trove of ideas. The many insights, methods and resources are offered by the author as gifts, with the invitation to "tinker and improvise" in order to adapt them to one's own needs.

In this simple offering, Chan Allen summarizes the heart of her book as a journey of discovery - which may well alter the life of the change practitioner, as well as the very nature of his or her organizational context.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Application for the Mystically Determined.......2001-11-26

An excellent publication for all those who have desired to implement eastern theology and the soul's path into the corporate realm, but didn't have the tools or know how. This book is revolutionary in providing the practical tools to bridge this tricky terrain.
Apply the soul's work in an "acceptable" format that won't raise the eye brows of CEOs. Execute exercises that seem sincere and truly contribute to well-functioning individuals and organizations. Review organizational and personal experiences with the new perspective of eight steps of the change journey realizing that they do exist, and how you can work with each step for the best possible outcome.
Highly effective in my work as a consultant and organizational behavioral specialist.

5 out of 5 stars A Bridge Across Forever.......2001-10-30

Rebecca Chan Allen has written a masterful book that bridges
ancient eastern wisdom and modern western organization problems.
The book illuminates both the practical and theoretical side of some of our greatest organizational issues, and supports leaders
in playing full rich transformational roles in organization change.

5 out of 5 stars East-West Fusion.......2001-10-16

Guiding Change Journeys is a masterful fusion of Eastern and Western wisdom, science and mythology presented with great insight, clarity and warmth. It is full of new ideas, tools and practical applications that are guaranteed to energize and re-orient your thinking and approach to organization transformation.

Book Description

Logistics is defined as a business planning framework for the management of material, service, information and capital flows. Logistic systems have received considerable attention in the last 10 years, as they constitute one of the cornerstones in the design and control of production systems and the modeling of supply chains. This renewed interest is partly due to the recognition that well-known planning and control systems such as ‘Manufacturing Resources Planning’ and ‘Just in Time’ systems fail to establish a sound integration of lead time management, capacity planning and quality considerations.

This book uniquely:

A unique, leading edge title for researchers, practitioners, and students of logistics and supply chain management, in both academia; engineering, computer science, management science, undergraduate, graduate students and industry professionals.

    Book Description

The book begins with an easy-to-read introduction to the concepts associated with the creation of optimization models for production planning. These concepts are then applied to well-known planning models, namely mrp and MRP II.

From this foundation, fairly sophisticated models for supply chain management are developed. Another unique feature is that models are developed with an eye toward implementation. In fact, there is a chapter that provides explicit examples of implementation of the basic models using a variety of popular, commercially available modeling languages.

5 out of 5 stars This Guide Helps You Become Weather-Wise!!!.......2005-03-31

          +++++

This slim book, by Cambridge meteorology lecturer Ross Reynolds is a practical, invaluable guide for all those influenced directly or indirectly by the weather (which is all of us). Reynolds elaborates: "Amongst other things, this book outlines a grounding in meteorology for those who want to gain a basic understanding of what makes the weather `tick,' and to appreciate what lies behind some of today's great atmospheric environmental issues.

Each chapter of this nine-chapter book begins with a brief summary:

          (1) The Atmosphere

"Before looking at the weather in detail, it is necessary to set the scene by explaining some basic facts about the atmosphere's chemical make-up, its structure and layering, and what drives it to on a global scale. This basic knowledge will help you understand subsequent chapters."

          (2) Weather Observation

"Many people take more than just a conversational interest in the atmosphere by recording weather measurements at home. In some countries, there are networks of enthusiasts who produce regular newsletters that often include members' observations. The advent of the internet has facilitated even wider links between observers on an intercontinental scale."

          (3) Weather Mapping

"Portraying the elements of both the `actual' weather and its forecast state as a...map, for one instant, is crucial in...meteorology. Satellite and radar `images' also aid in the visualization of extensive [weather] detail in a quickly [non-overwhelming] form. Much of the complexity of the atmosphere is, and will remain, summarized in map form that is truly international language for meteorology."

          (4) Global Weather

"It is important to understand the links between patterns of global [atmospheric] pressure, circulation, temperature, humidity, and precipitation before investigating individual weather-producing disturbances such as...hurricanes and typhoons."

          (5) How the Weather Works

"Every day, we all experience one facet or another of the weather, even if this is only the view from a window on a dull day...What makes the wind blow? How do clouds form and stay in the sky? How do they produce rain, snow, and drizzle? Why are there different types of fog? How do dew and frost form? These topics [and more] are discussed in this chapter."

          (6) Weather Forecasting

"To most people, the main aim of the meteorologist is to prepare and present a weather forecast. Furthermore, television is probably the most common medium through which they obtain information on what is likely to happen over the next day or so weather-wise."

          (7) Hazardous Weather

"In many parts of the world, the most common natural hazard to effect society is the weather. Its impact may be very short lived-from the disastrous transit of a tornado, to the potentially devastating passage of widespread gales that may last a day or so-or much more extensive, such as widespread flooding that may persist for weeks, or drought that may last for a season."

          (8) World Holiday Weather

"This chapter gives general information on the duration of various aspects of the climate, at a variety of holiday and other locations." (Note that this chapter provides a graph for monthly temperature, monthly rainfall, and monthly sunlight for each location or city profiled. This information is particularly useful for travelers.)

          (9) Environmental Issues

"During the last decade or so, we have become more aware of global or near-global changes in the atmosphere that have occurred naturally or through the activities of [humans]...El Nino, global warming, and the `hole' in the ozone layer are three environmental issues that are described in detail in this chapter."

In a few places within this book are internet addresses for major sites that provide up-to-date details of various topics within weather and climate.

This book has more than 300 illustrations (photographs, satellite imagery, maps, or diagrams), most in color. Also included are graphs, tables and charts. In fact, almost every page of this book contains at least one illustration, graph, table, or chart.

Finally, there is a handy glossary that provides definitions of common (examples: "precipitation," "snow") and uncommon (examples: "cut-off," "southern oscillation") weather terms.

In conclusion, this book concisely and adequately explains a fascinating subject important to all of us--the weather!!

                    Book Description

The simulation of complex engineering problems often involves an interaction or coupling of individual phenomena, which are traditionally related by themselves to separate fields of applied mechanics. Typical examples of these so- called multifield problems are the thermo-mechanical analysis of solids with coupling between mechanical stress analysis and thermal heat transfer processes, the simulation of coupled deformation and fluid transport mechanisms in porous media, the prediction of mass transport and phase transition phenomena of mixtures, the analysis of sedimentation proces- ses based on an interaction of particle dynamics and viscous flow, the simulation of multibody systems and fluid-structure interactions based on solid-to-solid and solid-to-fluid contact mechanisms.

                      Book Description

This is the story of the greatest love, ever....

                      J. J. Smith, Keeper of the Records for The Book of Records, is an ordinary man searching for the extraordinary. J.J. has clocked the world’s longest continuous kiss. He has verified the lengthiest single unbroken apple peel. He has tasted the world’s largest menu item. But J.J. has never witnessed great love.

That is, until he comes to a tiny town in the American heartland. Here J.J. discovers a world record attempt like no other. Piece by piece, a farmer is eating a Boeing 747 to prove his love for a woman. But when J.J. unexpectedly falls in love with the same woman, a woman as outwardly cynical as he is, J.J. learns why records are made to be broken...and why the greatest wonders in life can never be measured.

3 out of 5 stars I wanted to eat a 747 after reading this book.......2007-09-25

After reading several editorial reviews of this book that claimed it ws "brilliant" and "enchanting" I decided to purchase it and dive right it. The premise of the book is unique and that is what drew me to the book. However, the story lines moved slow and were too predictable. The romantic portions seemed to have been writted by a hormonal teenager, and lacked depth. The main characters were colorful, but played as far too idealistic for such a rural setting.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Story of Life and Love.......2007-05-14

How far would you go for someone you loved? We've all heard people state that they'd lie or die for a loved one, but would you eat a Boeing 747 jet plane?

Such is the case for Wally Chubb, a man on a mission to garner the attention of Willa Wyatt, the town's newspaper editor. Wally has been in love with her ever since she was the only schoolmate to attend his tenth birthday party--and now that he wants her attention, wants her to see just exactly how far he'd go to gain her approval and admiration, a jumbo jet has fallen from the sky like manna from Heaven.

When J.J. Smith gets an anonymous letter summoning him to Superior , Nebraska , to meet a man attempting to eat a 747, he's not sure what to do. For The Keeper of the Records--the man in charge of verifying all records for The Book of Records (similar to The Guinness Book of World Records)--the thought that someone would attempt to eat an airplane is intriguing. It's been awhile since he's found a great record, and his boss is starting to intimate that after fourteen years, J.J. is burnt out.

But John Smith, a small-town boy who got out as soon as he could, measures his life by the records that he verifies. He's seen greatness a thousand times over, and in turn felt justified in living a life of little emotion, of little love. Until he pulls into Superior , Nebraska , and witnesses "the greatest love, ever."

THE MAN WHO ATE THE 747 is a testament not just to how far a person will go for someone they love, but how a town reacts to momentary greatness, how it recovers from loss, and how you can find love in the strangest places.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and if you did, too, I would recommend Ben Sherwood's second release, The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud.

I heard about this book from a user on a forum and that person liked it so much that I ordered it. I loved it too. Great book.

2 out of 5 stars This Book Bites!.......2007-01-19

Altho the 747 was a mouthful... it left a bad taste in my mouth. I needed a light read... too bad the oxygen masks did not operate... maybe some literary talent could have been breathed into this book.

1 out of 5 stars the literary equivalent of candy corn.......2006-08-17

The success of this book might be chalked up to the old axiom how no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the american people.

I was drawn to this book by it's title and central premise. TOo bad Ben Sherwood can't write worth a lick.

I'm not sure which is more upsetting: how poorly Ben Sherwood writes, or how low our expectations have fallen as readers, given the number of positive reviews this book has received.
