    Book Description

The subject of numerical methods in finance has recently emerged as a new discipline at the intersection of probability theory, finance, and numerical analysis. The methods employed bridge the gap between financial theory and computational practice, and provide solutions for complex problems that are difficult to solve by traditional analytical methods. Although numerical methods in finance have been studied intensively in recent years, many theoretical and practical financial aspects have yet to be explored. This volume presents current research and survey articles focusing on various numerical methods in finance.

Key topics: methodological issues, i.e., genetic algorithms, neural networks, Monte–Carlo methods, finite difference methods, stochastic portfolio optimization, as well as the application of other computational and numerical methods in finance and risk management. The book is designed for the academic community and will also serve professional investors.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book for all those who can listen and learn.......1999-08-23

BP is an excellent book for all those people seeking for inside information. To me it seems it was written for people who are willing to walk the talk. BP provides the reader with information about drivers towards partnering and the benefits of partnering but also of the threats if you don't select your partner right. Therefore it emphasizes the importance of selecting the right partner and offers first hand evaluation forms from successful companies giving you ideas how to do it right with your own company. The first step to walk the talk.

5 out of 5 stars provides people with an excellent, hands-on approach.......1999-01-24

Provides people involved with an outsourcing strategy in manufacturing with an excellent, hands-on approach. Breakthough Partnering should be a part of the implementation process for companies looking for practical experience in manufacturing partnerships. Robert LeValley, Director of East Coast Operations, Solectron, Inc.

5 out of 5 stars loaded with contemporary examples of supplier partnerships.......1999-01-24

Breakthrough Partnering is loaded with contemporary examples ofsupplier partnerships and it contrasts them with the 'old time religion' of bidding, leverage, and voluminous planning. Readers should come away with insights on how to transition from their old tenets to a new-found faith in the power of teamwork in supplier partnerships. Robert W. Hall, Founder of Association for Manufacturing Excellence, and Editor-in-Chief, Target magazine

We don't need to poison the earth in order to grow better food, and what is harmful to the environment when improperly disposed of often can be turned back to the soil in a beneficial way through composting — if you know how. Here's how. Malcolm Beck's Garden-Ville is one of the largest commercial composting operations in the country. He shares his insight into the processes of decay that can transform everything from lawn trimmings to sewer sludge into life-giving earth. Coupled with Beck's insight into nature and practical advice are remarks from Charles Walters, author, founder of Acres U.S.A.

3 out of 5 stars Catchy title, but disappointing.......2006-08-14

This book was a major disappointment. Despite several interesting vignettes, the book reads more like a textbook than a book about the Amish.
The author is a Geauga County (Ohio) agriculture official and goes into great detail about planting seeds; plowing; farming methods; startup costs; and, profits. You hardly get anything on the Amish themselves. However, he does tell you what they served him for dinner when he helped out around their farms. Rivetting stuff!
If you're looking for something about Amish life, this isn't the book for you. But, if you're interested in farming, you may find this book helpful.
By the way, the author never does tell you why cows learn Dutch.

        5 out of 5 stars A heart-warming read.......2005-08-04

"Why Cows Learn Dutch and Other Secrets of Amish Farms" was written by Randy James, a Geauga County extension agent who works among the Amish people there. He tells true stories of his interaction with Amish farmers, changing only the names to preserve their anonymity. The illustrations, including the cover art, were done by Crist C. Miller, an Amish man who lives in Geauga County.

James's lament throughout the book is "How can I possibly help these people who seem bent on living in the past?" How can they continue to do everything the old way when so much modern technology is available to help them out? He never asks why they live as they do; he respects their ways and in fact finds them fascinating, calling their farms "focused yet flexible, vertically integrated firms."

We get to go along with the congenial author on his adventures among the Amish as he directs a team of horses in plowing a field, helps make maple syrup on one farm and milks cows at another. He explains their farming methods, how their often old-fashioned machinery works and what role animals play.

The Amish world is not idyllic, as a lot of tourists think. There is a definite toll on the body and the pocketbook because they can't use most modern equipment. Their economy is dependent on the rules the community chooses to live by. For example, because many Amish communities allow no refrigeration, their milk is only grade B and sells for less money, even though it requires the same amount of work and the same rules of cleanliness. Other communities do allow refrigeration, and so their milk is grade A and brings in more money.

As part of his job, James figures out the costs of everything to help the farmers make decisions about their future. For one family, he discusses the economic merits of dairy vs. vegetable farming. For another, he plans an entire budget, adding up everything a young man will need in order to buy and operate a farm. "The economics are critically important," says James, "because the 'plain' farm family lifestyle the Amish so cherish is predicated on the operation of a profitable farm."

In addition, James talks about Amish society: how children are educated, how the church is structured and how the family dynamic changes when elders retire.

Farming enthusiasts will love this book, as will anyone interested in the Amish culture. It's an interesting and heart-warming read and a fascinating look into a world filled with strong but gentle people.

            Book Description

When Eleanor Agnew, her husband, and two young children moved to the Maine woods in 1975, the back-to-the-land movement had already attracted untold numbers of converts who had grown increasingly estranged from mainstream American society. This is their story, in all its glories and agonies, its triumphs and disasters (many of them richly amusing), told by a woman who experienced the simple life firsthand but has also read widely and interviewed scores of people who went back to the land. Most of them, it turns out, came back from freedom and self-sufficiency, either by returning to urban life or by dressing up their primitive rural existence--but they held onto the values they gained during their back-to-the-land experience.

5 out of 5 stars A blast from the past ..........2007-03-07

Back in the 70's, I never dropped out of society and lived on the land, but I have friends that did .. and while they have some "conveniences" these days, to some degree they still lead the simple life. I am very much into voluntary simplicity but I never felt it should be so extreme. This was an awesome read that brought back many wonderful memories. At times, I was confused as to whether the author was talking first person or if she was quoting an interviewee, but despite that, the author did a great job of illustrating why folks dropped out and then what influences led them to come back to mainstream. Some of this I was exposed to ... some of this I lived ... but all of this book, I thoroughly enjoyed and I think you will, too.

            5 out of 5 stars Honest.......2006-06-26

One of the better books by former Hippies about the 60's and 70's. Well written and insightful. If you are really interested in the back to the land phenomenon and what it was really like this is highly recommended. If you want a light, "and then we all got stoned" sort of retrospective this will be too analytical but still interesting.

5 out of 5 stars well thought out and thorough.......2005-05-11

I was pleasently surprised by the depth of research and thought that went into this book. This was definately an eye opening review of the nieve attitude that even today many have. I had at one time thought about homesteading in some fashion or other, but after reading this book, and thinking about my current life style I personally will be very careful about trying any version of homesteading. It almost seems like the best choice is to move to a low cost of living suberb, and experiment there first. Maybe set up a small self sufficent business first, that can pay the medical bills.

4 out of 5 stars back from the land and happy about it.......2005-01-02

I was one of the people who lived this type of life in the mountains...and although it certainly did give me a strength in character and greater empathy for others, I left it behind too. It was hard even if you had running water and electricity. Still, the experience does lodge in the memory and you are never really happy in the city or suburbs once you have lived on a large piece of quiet land. I highly recommend this book to anyone with that rural dream, or readers interested in women's history or that time in our country.

3 out of 5 stars A Real Wet Blanket for Wanna Be Homesteaders!.......2004-12-28

Back From the Land was kind of disappointing to read, especially for someone who's life dream is to be able to homestead! I understand exactly how hard it is going to be, having been born and raised in rural Appalachia and having relatives that are still alive that lived exactly like this up until recently. I had just hoped that there would be some sort of, I don't know, silver lining that would let people see that there is a rose on the thorn bush. Overall, though, it is a first hand look at someone who was doin' (think Mother Earth News) and unfourtunately didn't like the lifestyle. I would recommend that if someone bought this book to see exactly what it was like to homestead, don't put all your eggs in this basket. Check out some other books that show the pros also to living intentionally, like Helen and Scott Nearing's Good Life books (even though they are described as virtual "sell outs" in some writtings)and some of the "Reports from Them That's Doin" in the older issues of MEN.

                                Book Description

This book considers the main hydrodynamic aspects of the dynamics of bubbles, drops and rigid particles with a special emphasis on the deformations and hydrodynamic interactions between fluid particles in uniform or shear flows and hydrodynamic interactions between rigid spherical particles in an oscillatory flow. There is no other published book to date which reveals these topics in the described manner.
Readers should have a basic understanding of introductory fluid mechanics, real analysis and numerical methods. The book provides the basis for quantitative description of the phenomena that occur in the dynamics of bubbles, drops and rigid particles.
The book is intended to serve both as a graduate textbook for students in chemical engineering, physics and applied mathematics, and as a reference monograph for academic and industrial researchers.

I've used this book as a basic of my Ph. D. work. It's written in very intelligible style but also has a very good scientific value! I'm recommending the book to those who has been interested in fluid dynamics!

                                Book Description

Bernie Rhodenbarr is actually trying to earn an honest living. It's been an entire year since he's entered anyone's abode illegally to help himself to their valuables. But now an unscrupulous landlord's threat to increase Bernie's rent by 1,000% is driving the bookseller and reformed burglar back to a life of crime -- though, in all fairness, it's a very short trip. And when the cops wrongly accuse him of stealing a priceless collection of baseball cards, Bernie's stuck with a worthless alibi since he was busy burgling a different apartment at the time . . . one that happened to contain a dead body locked inside a bathroom.

So Bernie has a dilemma. He can trade a burglary charge for a murder rap. Or he can shuffle all the cards himself and try to find the joker in the deck -- someone, perhaps, who believes that homicide is the real Great American Pastime.

You'd think Bernie Rhodenbarr would know better than to stop for mysterious, attractive young ladies who ask him to perform random burglaries, but that may just be his cross to bear. The Burglar Who Traded Ted Williams is deeply enjoyable and endlessly amusing, a hugely pleasant read. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone knows everyone.......2005-01-30

Block ranks right up there with other writers who just know how to write (others include Ed McBain and Donald Westlake) . Dialogue and the ability to keep us needing to turn the page are the hallmarks of all of Block's works. Block sets up impossible to figure situations and manages to sort it all out. Be prepared for everything that happens to be somehow interconnected, I don't know how he does it. As Block puts it, "Coincidences are God's way of letting us know He is up there." Warning: try to read in no more than three sittings, you'll never keep it all straight.

Not since Bilbo Baggins has a burglar been this engaging...how do you help the police solve a murder when you were at the scene of the crime committing larceny? And then you tried to trade the frozen Ted Williams. Just kidding. Remember when baseball cards came with bubblegum and mustard? Ah, the joys of Americana. Ah, the fun of a Lawrence Block mystery. A burglar with a bookstore? Hey since authors feel books rob them blind sometimes...speaking of authors, there's an interesting bit going through with Bernie Rhodenbarr's lesbian dog-groomer pal/sleuth Carolyn who thinks that Kinsey Millhone (Su Grafton's brainchild) is a lesbian. And there's a classy hint of lesbian romance in the air with the wife of one of the characters Bernie tangles with. Carolyn remarks, "I figure he'll be an easy act to follow." Block, however, isn't.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of the serise.......2004-04-08

Take a sarcastic on agian off agian burgler and add one lesoban dog gromer. For good measure also add a halfway honest cop and a cat named Raffels. What you get is a really fun serise of mystery books that will always hold a special place in your heart.

in this particular edition of the serise berny Rosenbar is doing all he can to resist the temtation of breaking and entering. When a new landlord rasies the price of the rent he really doesn't have a chocie, he wants to remian honest but he also wants to keep his store.

What you end up getting in the end is a great book with hilarious charecters. I recommend to all.

                                5 out of 5 stars Bernie Burgles Again . . . and Again . . . and Again!.......2003-05-21

Lawrence Block is one of our most talented mystery authors. In the Bernie Rhodenbarr series he explores how an ordinary, but intelligent, "honest" person might go about pursuing a life of crime as a fastidious and talented burglar who isn't proud of what he does, doesn't like to hang out with criminals, and really gets a big thrill out of breaking and entering . . . and removing valuables. As you can see, there's a sitcom set-up to provide lots of humor. But the humor works well in part because Mr. Block is able to put the reader in the Bernie's shoes while he breaks, enters and steals . . . and evades the long arm of the law. To balance the "honest" burglar is an array of "dishonest" and equally easy-money loving cops. As a result, you're in a funny moral never-never land while your stomach tightens and your arm muscles twitch as tension builds. To make matters even more topsy-turvy, Bernie at some point in every story turns into an investigator who must figure out "who-dun-it" for some crime that he personally didn't do. It's almost like one of those "mystery at home" games where the victim comes back as the police investigator, playing two roles. Very nice!

So much for explaining the concept of the series. The Burglar Who Traded Ted Williams is the sixth book in the series. I strongly suggest that you begin the series by reading Burglars Can't Be Choosers and follow it up with The Burglar in the Closet, The Burglar Who Studied Spinoza, The Burglar Who Liked to Quote Kipling, and The Burglar Who Painted Like Mondrian. Each story in the series adds information and characters in a way that will reduce your pleasure of the others if read out of order. Although, I originally read them out of order and liked them well enough. I'm rereading them now in order, and like it much better this way. The Burglar Who Thought He Was Bogart comes next in the series.

As this book opens, Bernie has been going straight . . . for almost a year. Barnegat Books, a used hard cover book store he owns and operates, has been providing his living rather than burglary. Then, he receives a double shock. His new landlord is Bordon Stoppelgard, and with his 30 year lease at an end, Mr. Stoppelgard announces that the new lease will be for $10,500 a month rather than $875. How can Bernie afford that? He can't. Then, Stoppelgard comes into Barnegat Books to buy a first edition of Sue Grafton's "B" Is for Burglar for $80 plus tax. Bernie tries to refuse him the sale, but Stoppelgard insists, slapping a hundred-dollar bill on the counter. Then he laughs at Bernie for selling a five-hundred-dollar book for so little.

But Bernie's sorely tempted to burgle again . . . both for the money and the thrills he gets from burglary. That temptation is particularly great just now because Bernie knows that the wealthy Martin Gilmartins will be out for the evening. Bernie does his best to avoid temptation . . . and succeeds. His only slip is to call Mr. Gilmartin from Carolyn Kaiser's apartment to ask him how he liked the show . . . a call that can be traced by the police when Mr. Gilmartin discovers a burglary has been committed and valuable baseball cards are missing. Bernie's alibi isn't very good because he decides to go out after leaving Carolyn. Someone might think he was visiting a fence to sell the baseball cards. What to do?

Most people will find The Burglar Who Traded Ted Williams to be the very best book in the series. The plot is deliciously complicated and unusual. There are mysteries galore to solve, and it's not clear until near the end who did what to whom. The satirical references to mystery novels and novelists are priceless (these include wickedly twisted misstatements of Sue Grafton titles and stories, and a hilarious sequence about cats solving mysteries referring to the Lillian Jackson Braun books). The book also introduces Raffles, Bernie's new mouse-exterminating-assistant cat who is always on the paper chase, and Carolyn's offbeat theories about women and cats. The baseball card trivia about the Chalmers Mustard Ted Williams set will delight any collector or fan. The comic sequences had me laughing out loud as Bernie finds unexpected surprises as he employs his burglary talents. Bernie also discovers a new source of income which most readers would not have anticipated. Some of the new characters will also amuse or delight you, even though they are only in this book. In essence, there's enough good material in this book for four excellent novels. And it's all nicely pulled together.

How will Bernie save the store? Who took the baseball cards? How will Bernie solve the other puzzles in the book? You are making a big mistake if you don't read this book!

The theme of this book is whether honesty or dishonesty pays better . . . and why. Where do you see dishonest people doing better than honest ones now? Will that continue? Why or why not?

While Lawrence Block has never shrunk from complexity, this story takes the cake.

Lawrence wants to be able to solve a "murder in a room locked from the inside" mystery and does so here. But there's more than just the mechanics in play. In this story, he also creates extraordinarily complex relationships and interrelationships for us, and uses Bernie to unravel each of these many complexities with some really tortured machinations.

Don't you just love it? I did...
