Before looking for books on a subject I want to learn about, I always find out if Seth wrote anything on the subject. The man writes about everything in a consistently clear, bold and humorous way.

Well he's done it again on this one. No one could explain accounting and finance better! I highly recommend this book, although I'm not - and will never be - a big fan of accounting!

Business Basics Bestseller 1: The Easy, Interesting, Open-book Look at the Game of Business Numbers! 2nd Edition

If you don't have a clue about this F&A stuff, you will like "Business Basics Bestseller 1" as another potential starting point. This is not a suggestion that you substitute it for this book, just that you check it out as well. The BBB #1 book was written by a guy who is not an accountant -- imagine what that can do for cutting through the jargon accountants love without even knowing it.

BBB #1 will introduce you to the basics of business including the terms behind the numbers and where all the formulas come from before you plow into a "finance and accounting" text. Search for "Business Basics Bestseller 1" and add it to your consideration. It can be one of your best investments. At less than 150 pages, you can zip through it enjoyably.

A terrific book for beginning accounting students!.......2000-04-15

This book is extremely clear and well organized. The presentation of accounting concepts is to the point and is explained in a practicable manner. Key points are repeated several times in different formats for easy reference and retrievel. Every topic is discussed with the who, what, when, where, and how in mind. It also includes key real world references/applications to help you become more aware of how these concepts fit in the real world context. If you desire a strong foundation in accounting, this book is most likely for you.

Great resource for beginners.......2000-03-24

Seth Godin introduces readers to accounting, and doesn't assume that you have any knowledge about accounting at all. I highly recommend this book for people who are just beginning their accounting education and need to learn the basics, possibly before pursuing further education.

A good starting point.......1999-06-30

I thought the book was pretty good overall. It was quite well laid out, good examples and at times, even a little interesting (not an easy task for a book about accounting). The book is easy to read, you can finish it in a day of two and raise you financial IQ a few points. Its not a book for someone that really wants all the details, but more of a general introduction to some accounting and finance definitions. There is also a pretty good list of resources at the back of the book to go for more information.

One of the authors is Seth Godin. He is an interesting character, he is the VP of Direct Marketing at YAHOO, he wrote another book called "Permission Marketing" which also all right (but a little hyper at times). The interesting part about Seth is his other books are about things like bridge, Disneyworld, Dieting, DOS, Poker, Wine, Marketing, lots of other "If you are Clueless" titles, even one called "E-Mail addresses of the rich and famous". So he has a lot of experience writing for a very diverse group of people. Any way I would rate this book a buy.

A Good Reference Book.......2006-08-06

I enjoyed reading this book. My work involves costing and seeking ways to cut costs across various departments. The book explains in a very logical, practical and straightforward way how costs can be cut without adversely affecting the operations of the organisation.

This is an excellent reference book that is understandable to both accounting and non-accounting managers. I refer the book often in cost accounting situations as the concepts are very useful and practical.

This is recommended reading for senior executives that have the responsibility for the prosperity of their organisations.

I found the approach to cost reduction to be far beyond a simple "puchasing" tactic. The authors proposed a 21st century approach that brings the entire enterprise together (engineering, manufacturing, finance, supply chain) in a systematic approach to achieving cost savings. Our company has struggled with global sourcing and outsourcing and this book provides the first alternative that still gets the required cost reduction, but allows us to keep our existing supply base and manufacturing in the US.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the magnitude of the sub-optimization cost associated with separate control strategies for compliance with the Swedish environmental quality objectives. The marginal reduction costs are estimated using a separate and an integrated version of a deterministic linear programming model. To investigate whether the accuracy of the data is decisive for the result of this study, an extensive sensitivity analysis that deals with both the disparity in discount rates in data and the different types of measures, is carried out in four steps. It can be concluded that the results are robust for possible and probable faults in data. The main findings are that there are no substantial sub-optimization costs for separate control strategies for CO"2, NO"X and SO"2, but an integrated action strategy could imply enhanced cost-efficiency in reductions of VOC and particles.

Land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) offer domestic and international opportunities to accomplish the targets set by the Kyoto Protocol. Design and selection of successful forestry projects are complex decision processes based on information of the carbon dioxide mitigation potential, the environmental impacts and the cost efficiency of selected scenarios. In this paper, a decision support framework to evaluate forestry scenarios for greenhouse gas emission reduction is presented and tested on five scenarios (existing and new multifunctional forest in Flanders, Belgium, bioenergy crop with short rotation poplar and with elephant grass in Flanders, Belgium, plantation forestry in the subtropics, and, conservation of tropical rainforest). The framework is organized as a serial connection of a carbon accounting module, an environmental impact module and an economic module. Modules include a combination of models and quantitative assessment procedures. In order to make scenarios comparable, the environmental and economic modules calculate their outputs on a functional unit basis of 1t CO"2 emission reduction. The framework is universally applicable and straightforward, transparent and quantitative. The level of data requirement is medium, but the application is fairly complex due to the interdisciplinary character of the tool. Further developments would require automated data flows between models and a user interface. Results of the test application showed that the only attractive domestic option is the establishment of new multifunctional forests. This scenario even yields a net benefit because it replaces the generally loss-making agriculture and, in addition, it provides other environmental and recreational benefits. The establishment of bioenergy plantations is a very efficient way of reducing CO"2 emissions as far as land occupation and environmental impacts per functional unit are concerned. However, it also turns out to be a very expensive option. Plantation forestry in the tropics is advantageous when evaluated over longer periods of time. Conservation of tropical forest is not eligible as a clean development mechanism (CDM) project, although it would be economically attractive for Flanders since the cost per tonne CO"2 emission reduction is close to the expected world market price. This option is thus promising for the voluntary market and for future commitment periods of the Kyoto Protocol.

This study deals with the lead time and ordering cost reduction problem in the single-vendor single-buyer integrated inventory model. We consider that buyer lead time can be shortened at an extra crashing cost which depends on the lead time length to be reduced and the ordering lot size. Additionally, buyer ordering cost can be reduced through further investment. Two models are presented in this study. The first model assumes that the ordering cost reduction has no relation to lead time crashing. The second model assumes that the lead time and ordering cost reduction are interacted. An iterative procedure is developed to find the optimal solution and numerical examples are presented to illustrate the results of the proposed models.

How to read and write chemistry (for the university student).......2002-10-14

This book is meant to be a practical guide in reading and writing chemistry. There are numerous practical tidbits interspersed throughout the book. There are also exercises (many of which include "peer review" style discussion among classmates) and numerous examples (both positive and negative). The topics range from reading the primary literature through writing lab reports and even to giving oral seminars.

The authors do a good job straddling the line between keeping the text short (this is a "Short Guide" after all), while providing the essential kernals of information. Unfortunately, it reads a bit like a how-to guide for someone trying to get an "A" grade in their "Writing in Chemsitry" course. There is little discussion of format variations (except possibly in the "Writing a Research Proposal" section) probably not the author's fault, more of a page constraint issue. However, I would like to have seen less on, say "How to keep a freshman lab book" (17 pages!) and more on, "How to give an oral presentation." Surely the target audience should be the upper-year student, not the freshman.

If the biggest problem is the formulaic presentation, the best aspect is the numerous examples interspersed throughout the book. I was pleased to note that the examples, at least, are chosen to highlight the differences in scientific opinion that constantly arise and that younger scientists find baffling. Because science is generally taught as hard facts in high school, there is no indication that science is actually a refining process where theories are put to the test, elevated, or destroyed as work is done to test their validity. This process is amply demonstrated by the authors, in a wide variety of subdisciplines, all of which are fun to read, even for professors and other chemical professionals.

Therefore, I recommend this book for the senior undergraduate and graduate student who wants to refine/develop their scientific writing style. I'm skeptical about recommending the book to freshmen, in spite of the number of pages devoted to freshman topics, because I'm not as happy with those chapters.

Writing About Chemistry.......2001-12-08

In A Short Guide to Writing about Chemistry Herbert Beall and John Trimbur describe how to write in chemistry. Beall is an expert in writing books about chemistry and Trimbur wrote books about reading and writing. With these two authors combined for one book, there was no doubt that this book would be a top seller. The book thoroughly discusses how to write research papers, literature reviews, critiques, persuasion essays, and lab reports. The book describes what chemists read and write about.
To understand chemistry you must find what is significant, make a model, and reason by analogy. The book describes how to read a chemistry textbook, study for tests or quizzes, and take lecture notes. All of these hints are good for a college student in chemistry.
The book gives step by step details as the chapter goes along. It gives good details for visual aids, and how to rehearse before delivering your speech if you have to do an oral presentation. The lab report chapter is very useful because it's not just enough to understand the concepts, but you must write out a lab report.
After the authors describe the steps to follow, they give an example and then practice problems. The book includes websites to look at for a chemistry article and good engines to use when searching for a certain chemistry concept.
The book covers so much information that any student at any level of study can understand the book. The book is designed mainly to get the students to communicate in the chemistry language either by writing, reading, or giving oral presentations. With all of the great things found in this book, it is no surprise that it was successful at helping students and professors alike in writing about chemistry.
