'The Broken Land' is terrific! .......2005-12-21

Frank De Courten's description of the Great Basin's origins is remarkably clear and enjoyable. The author's explanations of specific geological processes are more complete and satisfying than I've found elsewhere. His style is very relaxed and he has a great gift for organization and presentation of technical details.

Excellent book for readers interested in the Pleistocene.......2002-02-06

This book provides a wealth of information about the Pleistocene history of the Great Basin. Grayson covers numerous aspects of the Great Basin's natural history including: Geology, Geomorphology, Paleoclimatology, and Paleonotology. The treatment of ancient lake basins is well worth the investment alone. With the help of Grayson you gain an understanding of why there were large lakes in the western US not too long ago and why most of them vanished. I consider the book to be well suited for scientist and non-scientist. If you live in the Great Basin or are just interested in its natural history I would highly recommmend this book.

A concise, readable look at the ancient Great Basin.......2000-05-17

"The Desert's Past" is a very readable book about the prehistory of the Great Basin. From the Ice Age flora and fauna to the first evidence of humans around the ancient lakes, Grayson takes the reader on a journey in a time machine. He incorporates the research of botonists, archaeologists and other scientists into an easily understood history. Although many discoveries -- especially concerning early humans -- have been made since the book was written, most of the book remains valid and is a must-read for anyone interested in the prehistory of the region. Grayson also has a chapter on the Donner Party, which gives insight into why the survivors (mostly women) made it through the tragedy. Highly recommended!

The Great Basin is generally regarded as "flyover country", meaning you either fly over it or drive through it on your way to somewhere else. The big cities are all on the edge; Salt Lake City, Reno, Las Vegas. And it isn't "scenic" for the most part, having only one national park. Say the two words, and most Americans think of a dreary, dry, empty expanse of overgrazed sagebrush. Well, most Americans are wrong.

The Great Basin, explored on its terms, is a fascinating expanse of unique geology, as Bill Fiero, a professor of geology at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, shows you in this fine book. Written in easily read style, and understandable to anyone who has gone to high school, the book takes you on a general tour of the wonders of Great Basin, including well-known Bonneville Salt Flats, a remnant of an Ice Age lake bigger than Lake Michigan. You will also read about recent volcanoes, earthquake activity and faults, deep trenches such as Death Valley, ancient, dried up rivers, and fossil sand dunes. Canyons, badlands, and mountains are also part of this region, and author Fiero takes you through these areas as well, all the while explaining how and why all of these features came to exist as they do.

The book not only has excellent color and black and white photographs, following side-by-side with the narratives, but gives the reader an excellent background on physical geology in general, Indeed, it could easily be used as an introductory college text. Remember that one advantage to the Great Basin is its aridity, which enables you to see and understand the rocks and what they tell much better.

The Buffalo Canyon flora of 69 species, 18 MA old, from semiarid western Nevada, is a rich mixed conifer-hardwood forest with evergreen sclerophyll vegetation on bordering volcanic slopes. Precipitation totalled 100 centimeters and fell chiefly in summer; winter snow was light. Elevation was 1,280 meters, implying an uplift of 550 meters. Situated on windward slopes and at a higher elevation, this flora is more mesic than the nearby Eastgate-Middlegate floras.

I borrowed this book from a good friend of the author. Knowing how much I like a good book, he thought I would enjoy Mr. Neagle's good-natured, witty style. Within a few pages I knew he was right. ---When I arrived at the end of the novel, I immediately began searching for another Win Neagle work of art. "Smoke and Gravity" is an easy read that will touch both your heart and your funny bone. I can happily say that Win Neagle's and my mutual friend David Jones was right. I have passed it on to my dad, and am about to order "Full Count". :-)

This book is pure delight from start to finish. I enjoyed the characters, as well as the story, which was both funny & touching. Rarely does a book make me both laugh and cry. This one did. I look forward to other books from this author.

This book isn't quite a 4 star, but I always round up. The story is entertaining enough, but the ending is so heaped with tying up loose threads that it just takes all the fun out of the meandering beginning. The book reminds me of a scrapbook but one that is a combined effort, with a half dozen characters adding their bits. And then, like in all the scrapbooks I've ever seen, rushed to a finish so it can be displayed. Still, all and all, not a bad read. I am taking this to the UK to release "into the wild" as a BookCrossing.com book.

Humor and Style that Embraces.......2001-05-22

Neagle's style features a clever narration that I've neither encountered nor enjoyed so much in a novel. The friendly voice adds delightful sparks of self-effacing humor, bright wit and gentle wisdom in this healthy, honest, humorous glance into the lives of some CHARACTERS (with capital letters!) and their colorful lives. Neagle's keen eye and ear for just the right details that express the goodness and uniqueness of a person (character) make his fiction believable reality -- especially as I recognize myself and others I know in the events and people of this novel. As I laughed out loud, the almost matter-of-fact innocence of this novel helped me see that when I laugh, I'm laughing at me, --- and it's healthy, because it seems like I'm embracing instead of making fun.

Definitely A "Color Outside The Lines" Book!.......2001-03-06

I thoroughly enjoyed this humorous and delightfully colorful story by Mr. Neagle. I'm almost sure the Oak Goddess was in some way responsible for getting it into my hands, at lease I'm sure Duke would think so. Zany, full of fun, and without a doubt the best fiction I've read quite a while!
