Book Description
Ron Ireland was one of the leaders in Wal-Mart's effort to develop its supply chain processes for collaborative forecasting and replenishment execution using retail links for communicating point-of-sale, forecasts, and inventory information to its suppliers. As a result he helped pioneer the retail industry standard called Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR). This collaborative process, which involves sharing information with supply chain partners in real-time, enables substantially improved planning and financial results. Using his extensive knowledge and first-hand experience, Ireland, with Colleen Crum, demonstrates what is necessary to achieve successful win-win trading partner collaborations and describes what companies give up when they don't collaborate.
Since an effective supply chain collaboration effort requires flexibility when adapting to each partner's capabilities and the business environment, this book presents a blueprint that you can customize to fit your company's and your company's trading partners' needs to achieve success. Supply Chain Collaboration shows you how to implement CPFR and other best collaborative practices quickly and successfully in almost any organization. Wal-Mart, Procter & Gamble and other highly successful companies are reaping huge competitive benefits from the CPFR process. Learn from the "visionary pioneer" of CPFR how your organization can as well.

Book Description
This book exposes previously ignored ways in which the law is central to the causes and structure of poverty, and explores new possibilities for using the law to alleviate poverty. It covers international human rights conventions, constitutional and statutory provisions, social insurance and social assistance law, and ranges over a wide terrain. Law is examined at its most general, as legally constructed--looking at the ways in which specific laws can either exacerbate poverty or enshrine a human right not to be poor--and in establishing specific rights entitlements that bear on reducing poverty. Finally, and most concretely, it examines the specific role of law in areas like tackling child labor, reducing economic discrimination against women, and the freedom of employees to organize.

Book Description
This volume of important papers by one the world's leading astrophysicists provides a sweeping survey of the incisive and exciting applications of nuclear and particle physics to a wide range of problems in astrophysics and cosmology.
The prime focus of the book is on Big Bang cosmology and the role of primordial nucleosynthesis in establishing the modern consensus on the Big Bang. This leads into the connection of cosmology to particle physics and the constraints put on various elementary particles by astrophysical arguments. Big Bang Nucleosynthesis has also led to the argument for nonbaryonic dark matter and is thus related to the major problem in physical cosmology today, namely, structure formation. The nuclear-particle interface with astrophysics also extends to the other topics of major interest such as the age of the universe, cosmic rays, supernovae, and solar neutrinos, each of which will be discussed in some detail. Each section contains historical papers, current papers, and frequently a popular article on the subject which provides an overview of the topic.
This volume is testimony to the success of the integration of nuclear and particle physics with astrophysics and cosmology, and to the ingenuity of the work in this area which has earned the author numerous prestigious awards. The book, which is accessible to beginning graduate students, should be of particular interest to researchers and students in astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology and gravitation, and also in high energy and nuclear physics.

Book Description
The Particle Explosion is a spectacular illustrated tour of the subatomic world, the first book to describe to the general reader how the study of basic particles over the last hundred years has led us closer to an understanding of the origins of the Universe. This journey to the heart of
matter opens with an introduction to the basic particles (a subatomic "zoo" that includes quarks, electrons, leptons, 'strange' particles and 'charmed' particles) and of the methods used to create and investigate them. The even-numbered chapters tell the story of their discovery, from the first
experiments with X-rays and the elucidation of the nature of the atom, to the great machines that today smash particles together at enormous energy levels. The odd-numbered chapters describe the major particles in more detail. With over 300 fascinating illustrations, the book brings together many
historical photographs of leading scientists in the field, the increasingly vast and complex equipment they use (bubble chambers, accelerators and modern electronic detectors), and the striking images of tracks produced by the particles themselves.
Detailing in readable, jargon-free language the new vistas particle physics has opened--from the approach to a Grand Unified Theory of matter to the detection of art forgeries--this book is must reading for anyone who hopes to understand more about the brave new world of modern science.
Customer Reviews:
Good Overview of Particle Physics 1890 to the mid-1980s. A new edition now available.......2006-04-14
The Particle Explosion(1987) by Oxford University Press is an excellent introductory overview of particle physics from the unexpected discoveries in the 1890s of electrons, x-rays, and radioactivity to the meticulously planned, large scale experiments in the mid-1980s that detected the W and Z particles, thereby confirming the Standard Model.
The Particle Explosion is an oversized book (11 x 9 inches) that accommodates larger photos, but it is not so bulky as to discourage reading. Photos, some in the margins while others entirely fill a page, make this book a delight to read and study. The three authors - Frank Close, Michael Marten, and Christine Sutton - should be commended for their careful selections. The Particle Explosion will appeal to the enthusiastic layman and to undergraduate physics students.
Even numbered chapters focus on the researchers and their massive machines. Odd numbered chapters describe the subatomic particles. This unusual even-odd arrangement is surprisingly well-integrated and does not attract attention to itself.
The Particle Explosion is true to its title. The reader encounters neutrinos, muons, pions (pi-zero, pi-plus, pi-minus), kaons (K-zero, K-plus, K-minus), J/PSI, D (D-zero, D-plus), upsilon, lambda, sigma (sigma-zero, sigma-plus, sigma-minus), xi (xi-minus, xi-zero), omega minus, and charmed lambda. And don't forget, there is an antiparticle for every particle. There are also various resonance states for many particles. Thankfully, Murray Gell-Mann and others bundled these bewildering particles into well-behaved symmetry groups.
I enjoyed learning to decipher images of particle tracks from cloud chambers, bubble chambers, and various electronic detectors. In short order, I actually gained some proficiency in interpreting particle tracks, even recognizing indications of missing particles. Nonetheless, complicated images revealing quarks and gluons (in chapter 9, titled From Charm to Top) remained intimidating. Fortunately, modern computer processing allows the removal of unrelated low-momentum tracks, thereby more clearly exposing the unique signature of high energy quarks.
Not long after I completed reading and reviewing The Particle Explosion (1987), I became aware that the three authors (Close, Marten, and Sutton) had published a 2002 edition under a new title, The Particle Odyssey. Although the layout is quite similar, this new edition has two major advantages: one, the material has been updated to cover the years 1987-2002 and two, the graphics are even better.
Recommendation: For a more technical look at the Standard Model, Deep Down Things (John Hopkins Press, 2004) by Bruce A. Schumm is quite good.
Learn to interpret bubble chamber tracks!.......1998-09-04
Bubble chamber tracks were always a mystery to me ... until I discovered "The Particle Explosion". This book is wonderful because ... The edited & colorized bubble chamber photographs engender a new, visceral, level of understanding of elementary particles. With so many books and articles on theoretical and abstract aspects of quantum mechaniscs, this book reveals the, oft neglected, world of experimental particle physicists and their immense accomplishments. It is a wonderful example of expository writing, where complex mechanisms are clearly described without resorting to diagrams.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2006-02-19
Sidekick Harry and the Remarkable Three is a fascinating book written by author Dallas Wilkinson who has woven a dynamic plot around extreme political corruption and social reform. Sidekick Harry and the Remarkable Three is not only highly entertaining but will challenge you in the way that you look at various "political" organizations. Fiction is not easy to write, but author Dallas Wilkinson has done a tremendous job of bringing the characters of his book alive on the pages of his book. Sidekick Harry and the Remarkable Three is destined to be a classic and one book that you will definitely want to own.

The Enemy Within and
Outposts of Hell or Portals to Heaven
Review of "Sidekick Harry and the Remarkable Three" by Dallas Wilkinson.......2006-01-20
When I was in High School in the late 1960's Joseph Heller's book Catch-22 seemed to be everywhere. I loved the black comedic humor found in his book as well as in Stanley Kubrick's movies such as Doctor Strangelove. Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse 5 ranked right up there with them. I have yearned for some contemporary author to take up the reigns of this wonderfully entertaining medium. When I agreed to review Sidekick Harry and the Remarkable Three by Dallas Wilkinson, I had no idea that the author would take me on a ride that rivaled those I loved from Heller and Vonnegut. As I read this wonderful book, I contemplated on how to put into words what I was experiencing. As I finished it, my first words were, "What a ride!"
Sidekick Harry and the Remarkable Three consists of a multi-layered, dynamic plot revolving around the main character, Harry Bennett. Harry isn't particularly religious, but he gains the nickname, Sidekick Harry, because he gives God all the credit for his stock picking acumen. As the star employee of a large investment firm, LBJ, his skill at picking winners makes the company the industry leader. However, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and his wife's mugging cause Harry to succumb to a nervous breakdown. The chapters dealing with his hospitalization, the hallucinations from the drugs they put him on, and the flashbacks to his and his family's past are highly entertaining. I laughed so hard my sides hurt.
The supporting cast of characters is priceless. Wilkinson's chapters containing the meetings of the Great Minds (the group of people attempting to create a one-world government) are masterful combinations of horror and hilarity. Even though I was reminded of Heller and Vonnegut as I read, Wilkinson has created his own unique writing style. The interplay during these meetings shows how the Great Minds are very small and silly people who have huge egos but are painfully childish in their emotional development.
Sidekick Harry and the Remarkable Three presents a world as seen from the viewpoint of a man who listens to God and learns to walk by faith. He sees the extreme left and extreme right political groups as bizarre puppets of the Great Minds. In an attempt to create their one world government, they plot to destroy the monetary system of the United States by pumping counterfeit money into the economy. About the same time, Harry is duped by the Great Minds to run for president. They infiltrate his political campaign with a woman whose grandfather was killed by Harry's father. She wants to destroy him. They set up the political campaign to destroy and discredit Harry. The hilarity that results from his political campaign with no money is priceless.
I believe Dallas Wilkinson is destined to become a truly remarkable author. Sidekick Harry and the Remarkable Three was both entertaining and thought provoking with its very precise and relevant social commentary. The author who can create a story that combines wonderful humor and a call for social reform is bound for greatness. I believe Dallas Wilkinson has shown in this book that he is the one.
