Best book ever seen on this topic!.......2002-01-17

I recently joined a new accounting firm and one of my first cases was to do a thorough financial investigation for a wealthy client going through a difficult divorce. I purchased this book and couldn't believe how much detail and information was provided--everything I needed to refer to and more. The perfect book for reference. I'll keep it on my bookshelf for the life of my career.

Improving the management of supply chains is a challenging task. Every supply chain is unique, and there are many areas of operations that are affected by the supply chain and conversely those same areas affect the supply chain's performance. This book by no means solves all supply chain problems, but it does identify a number of areas that have an actual or potential impact on the performance of the supply chain.
Since the supply chain is so critical to any commercial activity any assistance that can be provided will enable the supply chain manager to improve his supply chain/s performance, albeit incrementally.
The best service this book provides is the identification of those areas that impact the supply chain. Many supply chain managers may be so focussed on a limited number of areas and overlook some other important areas that impact the supply chain.
Potential solutions to a number of supply chain problems are presented, and these solutions are scientifically based. In other words they have been tested out in empirical, real world situations. So the advice that one can take from these solutions is sound and not just based on someone's opinion.

Cook book without recipe?.......2003-10-13

The Warren J. Smith book has been the only helpful book for me for above one year with the OSLO LT manual.

It's not at all a formal text book. It's not at all a how to do for stupid people something book. It¡¯s not at all an look how I know so much of thing and you will never understand what I mean because I write a book only to impress people who can only look at my bibliography to hire me. Smith did not gave you an history course, an mathematic course, Smith really gave you advice when it¡¯s needed and some useful general formula you will never use but who give you some idea to create you own. Smith book is a multi level text. You read it once, and work a little, then you read it again and go back to try something...

Smith approach helps you to understand how each problem you will meet will request a particular optical system.

The best analogy to describe Smith book: ¡°A cook book without recipe, but advice to understand how to use you local potato to find yourself the best potato pie you can do with.¡±

The section about ¡°the modulation transfert function¡± and the whole chapter 12: ¡°The design of Optical System: General¡± have been particularly useful for me.

The only missing thing in the first edition I have consulted was absence of in book return (synergy) and the lack of formal presentation (for the optical prescription, notably). For example when Smith speak about merit function I say: "You will have to decide yourself of what is a good merit function and it's not really easy at all, it¡¯s the most difficult thing in that job¡", So I would have find some example an example of merit function in the end chapter about design 12, 13 and 14! It's a lack of return within the book. With the messy graphical presentation in chapter 13 and 14, it the only critic I have against Smith book who provide otherwise good understandable and ingenious graph combination to made simple the basic optical plot used in lens design.

Great Book for People New to Optics.......2003-07-29

This book is an excellent source for technical people (a.k.a. engineers) who do not know much about optics but want to enter the field. Warren Smith discussed in great detail a plethora of subjects: how lenses & prisms affect light; how lenses can vary from ideal (a.k.a. first order optics) conditions and how to compensate their aberrations; how to use lenses, prisms, and mirrors in an optical system.

I gave this book four stars out of five because I was expecting the CD to have free optical software with which I could play around with. The CD is great if you want to read the book off of your computer or share it with a friend, but it has no exercises to reinforce (a.k.a. to "learn by doing") the material the book covers.

The best survey of optical engineering.......2001-01-15

Without doubt, this is the best general survey of optical engineering, in or out of print. The book shows both the author's broad experience as well as his ability to apply theory to practice. The book is far superior in its selection of topics and in clarity and accuracy of presentation to the alternatives, particularly Shannon's book. The book is useful for engineers or scientists from other fields who need to learn some optics, and for experienced practitioners who need a reference and refresher on particular topics. For example, try to calculate the spectral radiance of a blackbody at a particular wavelength and temperature using the formula in your college physics text, then see how Smith treats the same topic; if you got within an order of magnitude of Smith's correct answer from the college text, give yourself a gold star. The second edition's only weakness was its sparse references; I haven't seen the third edition so this may have been improved. However, this still puts Smith's book ahead of Shannon's, which has no references whatever. If you only buy one book on optics, this should be it.

Right choice.......2000-07-17

The book is probably the best general text on optical engineering. It is written simle and clear. "Modern Optical Engineering" covers basic topics quite comprehensive. On the other hand, additional books are needed for good understanding of aberrations and a lens design procedure.

Davies' humour at its best.......2000-01-11

The great aspect about Davies' triogies is that each component is a stand alone novel. I read Leaven of Malice and simply enjoyed it! Davies being an editor and publisher, writes with material from experience in the editing buisness. Davies stays true to a Canadian based setting and Canadian characters. He also suggests a dignified proper tone to the book through his diction. It is amusing how these proper characters can act so immature (in their dignified way) and provide so much entertainment to the reader. Davies has the art down of conveying believable characters who do and say outrageous things, and at the same time creates characters that are used in the form of satire. This book is #2 on my list after Fifth Business...this one is a definite read. You will get a lot out of it.

Unraveling Loose Ends.......1999-11-02

Book 2 of the Salterton Trilogy. Following up on loose ends from Tempest-Tost, and immediately beginning to unravel even more. A rich plot with Dickensian characters and twists (Davies was a great Dickens scholar so no surprise here). A bit deeper than Tempest-Tost, but still obviously an early effort although showing the deft touch with dialogue and character that came to distinguish Davies as a leading novelist.

The perfect humorous novel........1997-01-01

A Mixture of Frailties tells two complete but entwined stories: one of Sully and his young wife who are burdened by the 'dead hand' of Sully's mother (they must produce a male heir or forfeit a fortune to 'little Miss Nobody, studying Japanese flower-arranging' under the terms of her malevolent will); another of a provincial Canadian girl, Monica, who benefits from the absurd trust established by the will, and makes her way to Europe to learn if she has any talent as an opera singer. Monica has talent, though she often confounds herself in her struggles between filial loyalty to her coarse parents and her innappropriate love for a composer of brilliance but no kindness. In the world of Robertson Davies there are always happy endings. Monica will find her heart, and her future as a singer; Sully and his wife will find a fortune and an heir; a multitude of the sort of people who ought to exist, but somehow never do, will pop up along the way. But the best thing of all? Though Robertson Davies died recently, he left three and two-thirds trilogies which merit reading and re-reading. The man whom The New York Times called "The Canadian Trollope" has left a vastly entertaining and richly humorous collection of novels, essays, and miscellany.

Book Description

This is a very face paced interesting mystery that keeps you in suspense and always guessing. The writing is excellent and easy to follow. Recommended for all ages. Would make a great movie.
