Book Description
Doing Business with the Government Using EDI A Guide for Small Businesses Jan Zimmerman "Of all the books on EDI, this guide really fulfills the needs of the small business owner. Not only is it well-written, the book is full of relevant information and tips to help you get started." Steven D. Royce, President, Crescent Design "A realworld account of the Federal Government EC/EDI program, this book not only tells you what the current mandates are but also how they will expand and formalize in years to come. A mustread for company decision makers and planners." Larry L. Jones, Director of Small Business (retired), Phillips Laboratory If you do business with the federal governmentor you want to do sothis book is required reading. Recent legislation mandates that by the year 2000, the majority of small-to-mid-sized government purchases must be made via electronic data interchange (EDI). If you want a piece of that action, you need only to acquire EDI capability, and learn how to use it effectively. Doing Business with the Government Using EDI offers a blueprint for doing both. Non-technical in its approach, this unique book focuses on the business side of doing business with the government online. It provides you with all the information you need to get started, and then shows you how to use marketing, bidding, and pricing strategies to maximize profit in the new government purchasing environment. Included are:
- Details of the Federal Acquisitions Streamlining Act (FASA) and how it affects small businesses
- Worksheets offering a structured approach to business decision-making
- An overview of software and online networks, how they work and how to choose the best ones for you
- Quick-reference lists of resources for additional information
- Directions for completing the detailed Trading Partner Profile registration
- A glossary of EDI terms and acronyms that cuts through the jargon
Concise and well-written, Doing Business with the Government Using EDI is an invaluable, single-source guidebook for making a profit through government sales
now and in the future.

Description:
Despite the substantial interest to ecologists of the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning, little is known about how the high species richness of decomposer (saprotrophic) fungi and their relative frequencies of occurrence influence the decomposition of organic matter. Three experiments were conducted to test the ability of culturable saprotrophic fungal isolates to utilise a range of artificial and more natural substrates that occur in organic matter, with the aims of (1) characterising the functional potential of 'common' and 'occasional' taxa in an upland grassland soil and (2) determining whether there was a high degree of apparent functional redundancy in these communities. 'Function' was defined as the ability of a fungal isolate to utilise broad categories of substrates (e.g. sugars, cellulose, lignin) that occur in organic matter and which change in proportion during decomposition. The terms 'common/abundant/frequent' and 'occasional/infrequent' usually referred here to the frequencies of occurrence of taxa estimated using Warcup soil plates. Accepting the difficulties of sampling fungi in soil, this appeared to be the most useful isolation method to produce a general picture of the microfungal community with an estimate of frequency of occurrence for every taxon obtained, and to provide cultures for use in function tests. The influence of this technique on the interpretation of the results is discussed. Forty-eight fungal isolates, obtained from an upland grassland in Roxburghshire, UK, were selected to cover the most 'abundant' taxa and a range of 'occasionals'. Pure cultures of anamorphic fungi and members of the Zygomycota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were tested. Although there was apparently a high degree of functional redundancy (equivalence) in assemblages of culturable decomposer fungi, with 'frequent' and 'infrequent' taxa largely utilising the same substrates, the 'infrequent' taxa played important roles in decomposition. 'Infrequent' microfungi tested were potentially more active in decomposition than the 'frequent' taxa, i.e. several had a higher overall activity, were able to utilise a wider range of substrates and were more combative than the 'abundant' taxa. When 'abundant' and 'occasional' taxa from the same putative guild were inoculated together on grass litter, there was slight evidence of 'positive' indirect effects on decomposition and cellulose degradation. Some 'negative' effects on lignin degradation, probably as a result of combat, were observed. It is possible that the 'occasional' taxa increased the temporal resilience of the ecosystem process of decomposition, and were 'waiting in the wings' to replace the abundant taxa. Nevertheless, greater functional diversity could be associated with the uncultured taxa not studied here.

Description:
The clearing land of trees and introduction of exotic pastures to enhance pasture production and associated monetary gains has been a common practise in Queensland. Previous studies on tree clearing emphasised the gains in pasture production, but over periods of less than 10-15 years after clearing, thus potentially misleading land managers who plan to continue grazing beyond that time. The present research follows an integrated approach to quantify the pasture yield and the effects of tree clearing on pasture species composition, soil properties (organic carbon, available N (NO"3^-), pH"w and microbial biomass (C and N)), and litter production over time-since-clearing on a grazing property in central Queensland, and to evaluate the implications of our findings for the region. The cleared pasture systems were taken at
<5, 11-13 and >33 year age of clearing in comparison to their paired uncleared pastures for three major tree communities representative of the region: Eucalyptus populnea, Eucalyptus melanophloia and Acacia harpophylla. The paper evaluates the effects of clearing on individual attributes as well as an integrated effect of these attributes, i.e. overall ecological services. Pasture production generally increased with clearing but plant diversity, litter production and potential return of N and P through litter decreased. Among soil attributes, clearing of trees adversely impacted upon soil pH and microbial biomass, which play an important role in nutrient availability and mineralisation. This, the initial gains in pasture production are not sustainable over time. The multivariate analysis for such ecological attributes suggests that at the >33 year age of clearing, the ecological state of pasture systems changed compared to that at 5 year or 11-13 year or to the uncleared system. A disturbed pasture system will most likely take longer to revert to the original state compared to the time that would have taken to harvest the benefits. The results are important for landholders and policy makers to comprehend the real gains and losses following tree clearing for pasture development over the long term.

Book Description
Microorganisms are key components in the functioning of ecosystems and the importance of their role is being increasingly recognized. In this volume, more than thirty contributors, invited from around the world, cover a wide range of topics: the extent of microbial diversity, the impact of microorganisms on global ecology and nutrient cycling, microorganisms and ecosystem maintenance, extremophiles, inventorying and monitoring microorganisms and the microbiology resource base. The book is based on papers presented at an IUBS/IUMS/SCOPE/UNEP-sponsored workshop on Microorganisms and the Maintenance of Biodiversity held in the UK in August 1993. It provides an up-to-date review of concepts and concerns in this increasingly important area of biodiversity studies, and will interest a wide range of ecologists and microbiologists.

Book Description
Gas Chromatograpic Environmental Analysis is the first, truly complete, up-to-date, homogeneous coverage in book form, of the analytical techniques applied to the chemical study of environment. The book describes the use of gas chromatograpy in environmental analysis. After an introduction in the fundamentals of gas chromatograpy and a critical review of the different column types, the author describes the necessary instrumentation, with particular attention on the sample injection, detection and calibration systems. Special attention is paid to trace analysis which is important, e.g., in the recognation of specific fluorocarbons in the atmosphere. In addition, the author looks briefly at other techniques such as HPLC and mass spectrometry to give a complete picture of environmental analysis of today and tomorrow.
Because it is written for chemists, analytical chemists in both industrial and academic contexts, chemical engineers, industrial hygienists, environmental biologists and geologists, the book pays particular attention to the methods that have been officially adopted in the U.S. and other highly industrialized companies. It is certain to be a welcome addition to the librairies of chemical companies, town and regional administrators, universities, and government research centers.
Book Description
Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technology has evolved over the past 30 years as a method of monitoring and controlling large processes. This newly revised reference book offers overviews of SCADA's component technologies, as well as details necessary to understand the big picture. SCADA processes cover areas that may be measured in the thousands of square miles, and have dimensions that may be hundreds, occasionally thousands, of miles long. Now a mature technology, SCADA includes, but is not limited to, software packages that can be incorporated in a larger system. After completing its 14 self-study units, readers should be conversant with SCADA nomenclature and architecture, understand the basic technology of the system's building blocks, understand its limitations, understand how it can benefit particular operations, and have a basis for selecting appropriate SCADA technologies for their operational requirements.
Customer Reviews:
Total waste of time and money.......2005-10-26
Info: I read the 3rd edition what was published in 2004.
General: The book is easy to read and does not keep repeating itself. The chapters are ordered in a way that seems logical.
Bookcontent:
70% of the book has nothing to do with SCADA but is informing you on ways of communicating, which can be used for SCADA. This part was written in a time that a 1200 baud modem was state of the art equipment AND THAT WAS NOT 2004! The rest of the book gives you a global idea what the difference is between RTU's and MTU's and what they can do. Based on the fact that the communication part is completely outdated this will be as well. It did not give me any additional information on what I already new.
A book with a very specific orientation.......2002-03-26
This book is NOT suited for electrical engineers who want to learn SCADA. It is, however, adequate for business men or managers who would like to acquire a general (very general indeed)understanding of SCADA terminology. Themes within the book are treated superficially sometimes, with a greater depth in others (such as when addressing protocols) that is not consistent nor coherent. I do not recommend this book for a Power Systems Engineer, student of such systems, or any electric or electronic engineer that wishes to understand SCADA.
Excellent for training.......2002-02-05
For training technicians, this book provides an excellent introduction to how SCADA systems work. Most of the more detailed system information requires training and manuals from specific vendors who usually provide good information on their products but little in the way of a system-wide view.
SCADA Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, 2nd edition.......2001-04-26
I found this book to contain mostly dated, simplistic information and believe it to be unsuitable for an engineer. It will NOT advance the expertise of anyone with even minor expertise in this field. I'm stunned that it has ISA backing and is a second edition. Don't waste your time on this book unless you need only a casual, conceptual understanding of this subject.
Very helpfull for training.......2000-10-27
I had to prepared an introduction course on SCADA system. This book by himself is a complete course. I had no trouble to find information and build a 3 days course to engineer learner. They were very satisfy with the contents of this book. Thank you for your sugestion to purchase it.
