This was a good presentation of basic accounting systems geared primarily toward business people wanting to get a basic idea of how to classify their accounting transactions. The content was also a good primer for accounting students about accounting systems.

Because the U.S. Air Force spends over one-third of its budget onnonweapons purchased goods and services, such purchases are a prime targetarea in which to seek performance improvements and cost savings. Promptedby a need for improved performance from its supply base, the Air Force hasbecome increasingly aware of the advantages of using market research,contract consolidation, supply base rationalization, and other leadingpurchasing and supply management (PSM) practices in its dealings withsuppliers. To aid the Air Force in its PSM efforts, RAND examined howinnovative commercial firms implement such practices in their purchases ofgood and services. After a review of the academic and trade literature, thestudy team conducted a series of elite interviews using a structuredquestionnaire to gather primary data from "best in class" commercial firms.The key findings are that (1) innovative commercial firms are moving to astrategic, goal-oriented approach to PSM, (2) implementing new PSM practicescan take a number of years and often requires significant, permanent changethroughout the organization, and (3) the Air Force needs strategies tosustain continuity of support for serious PSM change from one leadershipteam to the next.

From the author: Soil erosion in Indonesia has occurred at an alarming rate. A management challenge arises not only because of the lack of understanding of soil erosion processes and lack of data, but also due to difficulties in the application of soil erosion models. The objectives here are to measure erosion rates and sediment yields in a watershed in West Java using the Agricultural Non-point Source Pollution (AGNPS) model, to document rates of erosion from forestry and agroforestry land uses in the basin, and to compare soil erosion rates calculated by the AGNPS and Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) models. The method was to use both primary and secondary data as inputs to the AGNPS and USLE models, as well as field observations to compare the outputs from the two models with conditions in the field. The AGNPS model measured about half of the erosion rate predicted by the USLE. However, the AGNPS output appears to be more realistic. The erosion rates of the study area (2592 ha; 6.402 acres) were 95 and 103 ton/ha/yr (8,480 and 9,205 ton/acre/yr) in 1991 and 1992. The sediment yields were 99,630 ha/year (246,000 ton/yr) in 1991, and 108,135 ha (267,000 ton/yr) in 1992. The t-test regarding soil erosion in forested and agroforestry areas demonstrates that the difference in soil erosion rates is not statistically significant ([Alpha] = 0.05). Based on this finding, agroforestry is an excellent choice of land use to minimize soil erosion rates.

Boy, what a worthless book on brown nose techniques. One idea that is plain garbage is that if you do lots for other people they will pay back in kind by 2 to 10 fold. What garbage. Please do not waste your money on this book. I cannot believe the nonsense. After you give all you got to people after they see you have nothing left they will just move on. Boy, are these writers living in a dream world? It is a book about suck up that will just make you look like a fool. If I used most of their methods I would be a laughing stock at work. Those who exceed step on other faces, that is how it really works. My rating is really a minus 10 stars but they do not have that rating available. If I could I would return the book but it is probabbly better I burn it so there is one less copy available for some simple minded soul to read. If you want to be exploited and left holding the bag then read this book..

Networking is over done in my estimation. It smacks of manipulation and using people for the wrong reasons. If you're into it probably a great book, just doesnt float my boat.

This really is a great book. It covers practically every major principle of win/win networking imaginable and is an excellent guidebook for anyone who would like to learn how to master this valuable life and business skill.

The authors are both successful business people who, as part of their businesses, utilize the very skills they teach in this book.

Networking Magic will make an excellent gift for the college graduate, seasoned business pro, and everyone else who has a need to build a far-reaching network of valuable relationships and resources. The authors understand and communicate so well that the best and most successful networkers are those who take great pleasure in being an asset to others.

Despite the "science," sincerity is still the key!.......2005-01-27

Building a network is more science than art. So called public relations "experts" Rick Frishman and Jill Lublin team up to articulate to us what we should really intuit with common sense: networking is about system rather than creativity. I was a little let down at how few references there were to networking at a personal level. Despite the several references to healthcare, legal services, financial services, and real estate, little, if no, room is set aside for personal "stuff." Nonetheless, the book is useful on many levels - much like Anthony Robbins, we get a sense of "ah" when they deftly articulate what we should be doing - adding system to our meetings and making sure to follow up. The topics covered are broad in scope in that they include the Internet as well as organized network groups. Moreover, every section culminates in a small "how to" guide and self-reflection notes section - which in and of itself is really helpful. It is wonderful book to start with but a difficult one to live up to and achieve. What must be stressed is that it articulates what we instinctively know to be true - in this case it is system rather than imagination that takes the day - and don't forget sincerity is still the key.

A bad story to read to your child.......2006-07-31

I purchased this book because there are others in the "DK Readers" series that are excellent (Police Officer, Firefighter, Weather). However, the inaccuracy of the so-called medical procedure paints a harmful picture for the age range intended. Part of the day of the "Doctor" includes a young girl who comes into the office complaining of a "bad stomach ache". The photo accompanying the examination shows the little girl lying on an exam table with the Doctor pressing on her stomach--directly below the ribs. The child's parent is then told that the girl needs to have her appendix removed. The appendix is not located just beneath the ribs, but near the pelvis on the right side of the body--very low on the torso...definitely not the stomach!!!!! It is irresponsible for a publisher to allow a book for pre-schoolers to go to press when the information in it is inaccurate and frightening! Why would you read a book to your child that would plant the thought that if he or she had a stomach-ache (and whose child hasn't) that an operation to take something out of him or her would be the result! Children this age take things very literally and would trust anything a parent would say or read to them--they haven't the experience to know that a "tummy-ache" is probably just the six scoops of ice cream they just ate, not an appendicitis.

a must-have for the toddler set.......2006-03-07

our daughter, now 22 months, loves this book. she has brought it to the doctor three times and asks for it all the time. it has been really helpful to show her daisy performing the same tasks and tests on her patients that elliott is to have done to her. when she begins to get upset at the doc, we pull out the book and look at it together and try to find objects in the office that we see in the book. fun clay figures and great definitions of medical jargon at the end for the little ones to learn.

We agonize with Evelyn who wishes she had never been born. We empathize with bereaved parents who are subjected to their friends theories on why God took their children. We search for a worthwhile physician with the family of a drug overdose victim. We grope for the right words to say to a suicidal woman. We marvel that a dying child can see himself as part of a grand creation plan. And we hope with Markus that his journey with multiple sclerosis will include a long life and many grandchildren. Dr. Komp deals head on with the issue of innocent suffering. This is where "the rubber hits the road," in belief in God. Why does a just God allow innocent people, especially children to suffer? Of course, there is no answer to this question. Dr. Komp shows us that she has on occasion seen the face of God through children who are dying of cancer. Dr. Komp has weaved her personal experiences with the biblical book of Job. The result is a holy tapestry which helps us to feel the presence of the divine.

Best Resume Help Book Ever!.......2000-01-07

This is the best resume help book I've ever read! Since I've held six jobs in the last 10 years, I've searched for ways to present my employment history in a way that will not EXCLUDE me from the interview process, and this book has the answer to that problem! Additionally, it shows, with concrete examples, how to write about your accomplishments in a way that will help capture interviews, not rejection letters. And, getting interviews is the whole point of the resume writing process, afterall.

If you need help making your resume stand out from the crowd, then I recommend you check out this book!

The best book about resume writing I have encountered.......1998-09-07

After browsing numerous books on the art of resume writing, I decided to give Mr. Marcus a chance, and ordered this book from Amazon.com. I was very pleased with my decision, which was a right one. The book not only explains how to put yourself in the best possible light despite various shortcomings, but explains in detail how to write the various entries of a resume, and why. The book also contains many creative suggestions that will make your resume stand out in a stack, and includes numerous examples that highlight the points made.
