Geochemistry of Natural Waters.......2004-06-17

I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters. I found this to be a very poor text to use. The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving. I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry. I would not recommend use of this text.

Needs Work.......2001-11-09

This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student. The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry. The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater. In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater. Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times. I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.

Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts.......2001-01-18

Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.

However, I would note that if you need to start with introductory chemical concepts this isn't the book for you.

If you are weak in chemistry start elsewhere.

Still... two thumbs up from this reviewer.

Well logging has come a long way from the simple electrical devices of the early years. Today's tools are much more diverse in their applications. Among these are tools which characterize geological properties of rocks in the borehole in a way that was previously only possible with oriented cores. Thus, borehole imaging, nuclear spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and paleomagnetic logging provide precise information on bedding, mineralogy, texture and age of the rocks traversed by the borehole. Many of these logs can not only be acquired in the traditional "wireline" mode, but also in logging-while-drilling mode where the sensors are placed directly behind the drill bit, and the measurements are transmitted in real-time to the surface. Combined with new technology to drill deviated wells, the geoscientist now has tools which enable him to specify and develop reservoirs more accurately. Well I finally twigged that the reason I couldn't find a unifying plot in these early school stories is that there isn't one. Same setting, often the same characters, but separate fictional anecdotes. I suppose that wasn't as clear to me in the preceding `Prefect's Uncle' because I didn't notice the punchline in a few stories, such as the title one.

This collection makes it a bit clearer, and has some wonderful moments (such as the enchanting description of a Latin master getting an electric shock), but as I compulsively work through the Gutenberg Wodehouse chronologically I'm hoping he hits his straps soon. These stories probably would have delighted the contemporary public schoolboys they were written for, but their appeal doesn't extend as far as many of his later stories. One for the trainspotters/fans like myself.

Mostly for Wodehouse completists.......2005-11-30

This is Sir Pelham's third book, and first collection of stories, with three essays at the end. Like his first two novels, the stories are pleasant but extremely weak tales of misbehaving schoolboys, mostly of historical interest only. There are a couple of hints of the mature Wodehouse in the story "Author!", but it quickly degenerates to his usual formula. I found the essay "Work" intriguing, especially for the claim, "People who ought to know better will tell you that Virgil is hard." "The Tom Brown Question" is an amusing parody of Homeric scholarship, with a interesting observation about the original Flashman.

Early Wodehouse stories for boys.......1998-02-17

A collection of 12 short stoires and 4 essays originally published in British boys magazines in the early 20th century. Their intended audience limits their interest to present-day readers, but Wodehouse's trademark use of language and story-telling skills remain in evidence.

The stories invariably feature noble boys learning valuable lessons about life. It's interesting that the only story where villainy actually triumphs (A Shocking Affair) was the only one which was not accepted for prior publication--it didn't fit the required mold. Yet, that story is most reminescent of the mature Wodehouse.

This moralistic emphasis infects such characters as Charteris. A delightfully unorthodox character in the Pothunters, he appears here as a typical schoolboy athlete who learns his lesson after breaking school rules and reforms.

Pillingshot was annoyed. He was disgusted, mortified; no other word for it. He had no objection, of course, to Mr Mellish saying that his work during the term, and especially his Livy, had been disgraceful. A master has the right to say that sort of thing if he likes. It is one of the perquisites of the position. But when he went on to observe, without a touch of shame, that there would be an examination in the Livy as far as they had gone in it on the following Saturday, Pillingshot felt that he exceeded. It was not playing the game. There were the examinations at the end of term. Those were fair enough. You knew exactly when they were coming, and could make your arrangements accordingly. But to spring an examination on you in the middle of the term out of a blue sky, as it were, was underhand and unsportsmanlike, and would not do at all. Pillingshot wished that he could put his foot down. He would have liked to have stalked up to Mr Mellish's desk, fixed him with a blazing eye, and remarked, 'Sir, withdraw that remark. Cancel that statement instantly, or-!' or words to that effect. What he did say was: 'Oo, si-i-r!!'
