A must read for all women.......2002-01-08

After having read, Take Charge by Edie Milligan, a book about how women can understand and control their financial destiny, I am convinced that this is a must read for every young women over the age of 18. As Head of School of a PK - 12th Grade girls school, I know that the greatest concern parents have for their daughters is that of financial security and independence. In a straightforward, and uncomplicated way, Milligan creates a road map for even the most financially uninformed. It is a transformational work that should be on your gift list for every woman you know. Brava to Milligan for filling a niche in the financial literacy book market. We will all be stronger because of her good work.

Easy read, but indepth and practical.........2001-11-29

Finally! A women's book on finanace and retirement! Enough of the talking heads and "financial advisors". Edie Milligan spoke to me in a voice that is straightfoward and made planning for retirement and dealing with my financial future easier. She takes a subject that is huge and scary to most women and empowers you to tackle it and take it on. Edie guides you with compassion, understanding, and a little humor. You gotta get this book for financial piece-of-mind. I plan on sharing the wealth, I'm giving one to all my girlfriends for Christmas!

An excellent resource for women everywhere..........2001-11-13

Take Charge is a very valuable resource for women who are planning for retirement. The author combines touching stories at the start of each chapter with the facts about financial planning. In three parts, the book illustrates the steps that need taken to achieve financial security. The book is easy to read and defines financial terms within each chapter. I am not a math person, but I found the tables and financial calculations to be very user-friendly. My husband is a financial planner and was just thrilled that I read this book. I recommend Take Charge to anyone who would like to be more knowledgable about their finances and how to prepare for retirement. Thank you Edie Milligan for your wisdom and insight!

Excellent.......2000-03-09

This book is an excellent overview of a complex subject. Written in a clear, straight-forward style, Smith's book can be an indispensible companion to buying a first or last home. I haven't read the House Buying for Dummies book that was mentioned by an earlier reviewer, but, when I'm confronted with the bigeest purchase of my life, I'd rather stick with someone who has a bit more obvious expertise.

Informative, but wordy.......1999-04-15

Reading this book was much like reading a college textbook. The information therein was helpful, but the style was wordy and technical. The book could have been more concise. As a reference guide, I preferred the book House Buying for Dummies.

Great book, but out-of-date.......2007-05-28

I actually worked with Alex Bove on updating a book on estate planning, when I practiced law in Boston many years ago. I purchased this book back in 1996 (the date of the current edition), but since then the laws have changed several times, most notably in February 2006, with the enactment of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. As a result of those changes, many of the examples and planning suggestions discussed in Bove's book no longer work. For example, all rules relating to gifting, penalty periods, look-back periods, "half-a-loaf" planning, and annuities, have been radically changed. Do not rely on the examples in the book!

That being said, his material on durable powers of attorney, trusts (other than the Convertible Trust, which no longer works), gift taxes, general eligibility requirements, and ethics of Medicaid planning, is still worth reading.

For an example of a book that incorporates all the latest changes in the law, together with case studies and numerous cutting edge planning ideas, take a look at How to Protect Your Family's Assets from Devastating Nursing Home Costs: Medicaid Secrets. It's pricey, but well worth it when you consider all the information and ideas packed into it!

Woefully out of date........2007-04-28

While I own this book (I bought it ten years ago) it is now very much out-of-date. The law of Medicaid is one that is constantly in flux, changing just about every year. Recent changes to Medicaid law have made every book on the subject of Medicaid published before January 2007 obsolete. While this book and its author, Mr. Bove provided a great overview of the Medicaid planning process and for many years was the go to book to learn about Medicaid and the nursing home, today it is woefully out-of-date. For an example of an up-to-date book with information for all 50 states see: The Medicaid Handbook 2007

Not Topical.......2006-11-11

The book fairly explains the complexities of Medicare. However, many changes have been made in Medicare since the date this publication was printed. The book should be updated to reflect the recent changes.

Worthless after Feb 8, 2006.......2006-08-24

Dear Worried Reader,
On February 8, 2006, President Bush signed a law called the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. This law makes sweeping changes to the ability of seniors to transfer (gift) any assets to their children and grandchildren. Following the advice of any book written before that date can cause a catastrophic loss of Medicaid privileges when a senior citizen is most vulnerable..when they actually enter a nursing home. This book is for the third edition, not the forth in case anyone couldn't tell, but a lot of the problems are the same (a little different order) It wasn't as helpful as I had hope'd since it only has the solutions for the odds, and the odds are already in the back of the book. However, it was nice to see the work on a few problems for which the back of the book had just listed the final answer for. For me it was worth buying, esp with the extremely low used book price.

Volume 7 is a direct continuation of Volume 6, which documented the birth of the complementarity argument and its earliest elaborations. It covers the extension and refinement of the complementarity argument from 1933 until Bohrs' death in 1962. Divided into two, largely independent parts, the volume begins with Bohr's contributions to "Relativistic Quantum Theory". The articles in the second part, although also restricted in scope to the field of physics, address a broader audience. Stories that will make you look under your bed at night!.......2000-11-14

The collection of stories includes fantasy-indulging characters, as in Panama Madness; an honorable and demented veternarian in Dogs in the Box; the frightening, cat-munching Man at the Window; a hitchhiking tourist's nightmare in a Hardheaded Man; and all of this redeemed by a true, heart-tugging childhood Christmas story. I highly recommend the book for those who are looking for excuxes to have a nightmare! Great, great character development and dialog.
