We use agent-based modeling to study the performance of a supplier selection model, originally proposed by Croson and Jacobides [Small Numbers Outsourcing: Efficient Procurement Mechanisms in a Repeated Agency Model, Working Paper #99-05-04 Department of Operations and Information Management, The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (1999)], which displays a complicated reward and punishment profile under incomplete information. We document the dynamics and convergence to equilibrium of the interactions of a single buyer with a heterogeneous group of sellers, which results in both separation of sellers capable of producing high-quality goods from those incapable of doing so, and continuing incentives for high-quality-capable sellers to produce at the maximum quality possible. We model two methods of determining exploration reference points-an ''auction-style'' model focusing on probability of success and a ''newsvendor-style'' model focusing on profitability. Our simulation shows that (1) the tournament structure suffices to reach convergence at high-quality levels whenever the number of suppliers exceeds three, (2) punishment length and number of suppliers are substitutes, and (3) shorter punishments improve learning speed of convergence. Moreover, we show that it is strictly better for the buyer to transact with relatively few suppliers-a conclusion generated endogenously inside the model as a tradeoff between exploration and exploitation, rather than through assumptions that explicitly penalize supplier proliferation.

As firms are increasingly becoming outsourcing oriented, supplier selection has become a major strategic decision for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Hundreds of publications can be found in the literature that deal with supplier selection. Researchers from business school often emphasize philosophical issues and focus on developing qualitative principles to guide management decision making. On the other hand, engineering researchers mostly treat supplier selection as an optimization problem. While strategic thinking cannot provide quantitative solutions, a mathematically optimal solution has no meaning if it does not match a firm's business strategy. Therefore, there is a need to integrate strategic thinking with quantitative optimization in order to make sound and effective decisions on supplier selection. This paper presents an integration mechanism in terms of a set of comprehensive and configurable metrics arranged hierarchically that takes into account product type, supplier type, and OEM/supplier integration level. Based on a firm's business strategy, the management configures an appropriate set of metrics used to measure supplier performance. An optimal supplier selection decision is then made based on this chosen set of metrics, achieving a strategic fit between the firm's business model and its supply chain strategy.

Bad, bad, mean, bad ugly book!.......2004-05-08

This book is terrible for many reasons. First it tries to teach electronics and does not provide any easy to follow logic that leads to understanding. I'm more confused now than before the semester started! Second, there are errors, errors and more errors. Typos, diagram mistakes, use of acronyms that are defined later in the chapters. One instance left me wondering and rereading for an hour trying to figure out what the hell is the point of formal potential of 0.65 V versus NHE when I had no clue what NHE meant or how it was relevant. I thought I had completely missed something and I finally decided to skip it and found NHE defined 5 pages later. This book will confuse students, please do not teach from if you are a prof. Now I'm stuck on three-electrode potentiostat and I know there is something wrong in the text so what is my next logical step? I search the web for a listing of errata hoping someone (maybe the authors) proof read their work and put up corrects. No of course I haven't found anything yet so here I am trashing the book. I can only hope for a miracle to pass this course final next week.

Not the worst book ever...but close!.......2004-03-05

Upon first skimming through this book, I liked the easy readability of the text and I liked the variety and scope of topics listed in the table of contents. However, having used this book for a semester-long, upper level undergraduate chemistry course, I wish I had chosen another text.

This book is organized in a strange way that is very difficult for students to learn from. The separate "Introduction to..." chapters (for spectrometry and separations) did not help my students understand the material in subsequent chapters. Some material was seemingly inserted in random locations within a chapter, while other material (of equal or greater importance) was relegated to the end of the chapter in sections titled "A Deeper Look." Some information, such as a description of different types of electronic transitions, was not to be found anywhere.

Some chapters are extremely long (e.g. the Introduction to Spectrometry chapter is almost 90 pages) while others are amazingly short (IR and Raman together take up less than 40 pages). Since there is no logical organization, it is difficult to divide the longer chapters into assignment-sized chunks.

The students complained that the text did not make sense and that it was poorly written. There are hardly any worked example problems in the text and the end-of-chapter problems are often so confusing that we could not figure out what was being asked. In addition, there appeared to be many errors (typographical and calculational) in both the problem statements and the solutions at the back of the book. We even found that different printings sometimes gave different answers for a given problem. The rest of the text is also riddled with errors. The definitions of elastic and inelastic collisions are given on one page and then reversed on the following page. The word "spectrometry" is misspelled in the Brief Contents. After five weeks of this, I started giving extra credit to students for reporting errors.

I wanted to give this book a chance. I wanted something that would challenge the class. But the book has only succeeded in frustrating everyone. For the price paid for this book, it is a crime not to have something worthwhile. Don't buy this book for any reason. If I could give it zero stars, I would.

I hate this book! The lack of examples and clear explanation is immensely frustrating. Compared to Daniel Harris' analytical chemistry textbook, this book is even worse. I highly advocate finding another book with more examples and thorough explanation.

Recycle this book.......2001-04-10

Before I chose this book as the text for my class I had heard that the previous year's students hated it. I read through it and decided to give it a chance. About half way through the semester I had to give up and start using other texts. My students could not stand it and neither could I. The arrangement of topics within a chapter makes no sense to me. Topics of primary importance are relegated to the chapter end in a "A Deeper Look" section. My students told me that they could not figure out how to do the problems by reading the text.How useful is that?! I found the problems to be fairly easy once you managed to figure out what the Hell was being asked which was not at all obvious. I think that with some serious rearrangement it could be good since the Rubinsons are not bad writers and clearly put a great deal of effort into this hundred dollar door jamb.

Contemporary Instrumental Analysis.......2001-03-22

This text book is a very poor choice for undergraduates. It lacks depth and explanation.There are very few solved example problems to aid in the understanding of the concepts. The chapters do little to prepare a student for the end of chapter problem sets. Although, it does make a good shot put!

This book is an excellent primer for those who want to start learning about actionable steps that they can do as individuals, communities and families to help address the global warming environmental problem. It is written in easy-to-understand everyday vernacular with lots of humor and simple illustrations thrown in . It is not meant for the academic scientist, but rather for the ordinary citizen with a style that is especially appealing to the under 30 generation. I read this book from cover to cover, and I anticipate that I will be referring to it many times over the next several years.

Get this book and start learning how to walk the walk and talk the talk !

A combination of three things: delightful facts and suggestions, extreme solutions for local and domestic challenges and completely off the wall recommendations for what seem like impending doom. The book is written in two + page chapters, keeping the readers attention so easily, that the book can be easily read in a day. Solutions are useful and thoughfully suggested.

The artwork is limited in color, making the cartoon like images appealing and cleanly modern. Overall, the book is attractive and a great introduction for someone testing the waters in eco-logic. Would be a great gift for the person on your list who is: intelligent and hard to shop for, interested in science, interested in nature, or is someone you would like to introduce to the topic of conservancy and 'green' recovery.

Global Warming Handbook.......2007-07-29

This handbook has some earth-friendly advice on how to reduce CO2
emissions. Here are some examples:
- drive lighter cars
- pay bills online and avoid the paper
- purchase an energy star fridge
- styrofoam cups are difficult to break down ecologically
- work at home
- recycle
- upgrade the computer rather than buying new
- get a rainbarrel to trap water
- purchase locally produced fresh food rather than canned or frozen
- increase use of solar power

Overall, the acquisition is worth purchasing because of the unique
value of the information accumulated by the author. The suggestions
are practical and they make sense scientifically.

What a wonderful book. I have never felt that wonderful feeling of going back to my childhood to explore all the pranks and laughs all over again. I think of the Wonder Years, Dennis the Menace and That 70's show when I flip through these great pages.It is important not to go into this book looking for a begining, middle and end but to just read it as a type of journal documenting the best parts of a someones life. Joe Brucato is a well kept secret in the author business. Be looking for his latest book A Rose in Feilding....gonna be a good one im sure!!
