Accounting may be viewed and analyzed as its own special sort of language says Riahi-Belkaoui, and accounting is the language of business. It represents phenomena in the business world as language represents phenomena in the larger world. To understand accounting as a language one must study such things as its readability and understandability, its impact on users behavior, its various linguistic repertories, and the impact that bilinguality has on accounting practices. Riahi-Belkaoui covers all this in a way that not only academics versed in linguistics will understand, but in a way that trained accountants will also find fascinating and useful, particularly in their international and multicultural activities. Riahi-Belkaoui examines what he considers to be the four major aspects of his topic. First, he explores how accounting messages are based on levels of readability and understanding. Second he shows how accounting includes both lexical and grammatical characteristics, and how these shape the perceptions and thoughts of users. He then illustrates the ways in which different linguistic repertories are used by different professional groups, and shows how this leads to communication problems and from there to a schism between academics and practitioners. Finally he argues that bilingualism in accounting has clear advantage. It provides greater mental and cognitive flexibility, increased metalinguistic ability, and also makes it possible to formulate concepts better and to deal with divergent thinking.

I had the unpleasant experience of using this book in a class taught by the author at UNC School of Law. I found the book to be disappointing as law school texts go. There is NO scholarly material or note material. This book is nothing but cases and the notes are just questions. What notes there are contain no discussion or references to other cases and articles. Personally, thorough note material is my favorite part of case books. A close second is the essays often included. A book of nothing but cases is not one I would choose to keep on my shelf (I sold it back to my school store for a miserable nine dollars, which this book is not even worth in my opinion). Don't buy this unless your professor is forcing you to!

I used this book for my First Amendment course and it was very sharp. It has the best selection of cases with very good and challenging notes. I believe Prof. Van Alstyne is the best authority in the subject.

This book is a must have for anyone researching the calcium phosphates. Nowhere else will you find such an extensive source of information on their preparation, structure, properties, transformations, spectroscopy, diffraction and other analyses. The section on biological and non stoichiometric apatites is extremely informative and the standard XRD patterns are a particularly useful reference. The section on apatite cements could do with updating.

The present volume provides an overview of the phase equilibria of marine evaporites and the solubilities of the alkaline and earth alkaline chlorides and sulfates which occur in salt deposits. The first part of the book explains how phase relations and their projections are derived from solubility data, how multicomponent systems are interrelated, and how numerical calculations with respect to precipitation and dissolution of solids are carried out. The second part describes the quinary seawater system and its pertinent 5 quaternary, 9 ternary, and 6 binary subsystems. The interrelation between the systems is illustrated by diagrams and tables. The attached computer program SALSYS allows easy and fast access to solubility data that are required by different fields.
