Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2006-07-21
This is an excellent book and I will be using it frequently as a valued resource. I use the Hercule Design pipe library and I believe that my design work will be much improved by using the two together.
Splendid book.......2001-10-12
I found this book to be exteremely entertaining. It is written by a narrow minded, do it only one way individual. His spouse writes a glowing review of he book and it seems is the only one to receive good information from it. The information she receives is the possible income from the sale of the book. But she went from a draftsperson to engineer. When did the degree arrive, and in what field. Leggs have a nice day. The author also contributed to the closing of the Fluor Daniel office in Marlton.
Leading us thru the project.......2000-12-30
This book is a must for all persons in the engineering management field whether a novice or old timer. It is easily understood by all levels and deciplines of engineering and should be required reading for management. The verbal pictures drawn are as clear as if a master draftman himself put pencil to paper and created a drawing. If only such a book were available when I was coming up thru the ranks from draftsman to engineer!
Book Description
Originally developed at Toyota, the approach to manufacturing known as Kanban has helped revolutionize how corporations and suppliers achieve maximum efficiency in getting products to and from the assembly line. When implemented properly, the Kanban technique minimizes waste, avoids overproduction, and ensures quick response to changes and problems.
Kanban Made Simple is the first simple 'how-to' guide for incorporating the just-in-time ingenuity of the Kanban system into any manufacturing environment. From the Japanese word for "visual record," the technique dictates that suppliers deliver parts to the warehouse only as they are needed, reducing storage in the production area. Using before-and-after case studies, this easy-to-follow guide contains information on establishing project goals, forming a Kanban team, and designing the process. Kanban Made Simple helps readers decide if Kanban is right for their organization, then teaches them how to train personnel and administer the program. A ready-to-use CD-ROM, included with the book, guides the Kanban team through the entire implementation process.
Customer Reviews:
Good book - mainly about data collection and kanban sizing.......2007-04-11
A few years ago I was looking for a book about how to size a kanban system. This book is exactly about this topic and follows a step by step approach. Many people believe, that implementing a Pull-system is possible by following cooking-receipts, it is not. Anyone thinking about implementation of a Pull-system, should first understand when it makes sense and when there are better alternatives for your business. Pull-systems can be used as long as your product variaty is not to broad and when demand varies within +/- 20%.
The book starts with what data has to be collected and even gives some hints about consistent data (even wrong data examples are given). What I missed a little bit, are more information about the real meaning of the replenishment interval and sometimes the numbers calculated in the example seem to be rounded in a fancy manner.
Furthermore when sizing the kanbans it would be usefull to have a better description (example/ sketch) what the replenishment quantity and buffer quantity means. Without this information the reader beeing new in this area has to make a guess on his own. The different visual signs and cards (+equivalents) to control your kanban system are well explained.
What is missing in this book? The book is weak when it comes to other very important issues as line lay-out, the importance of cell implementation, load leveling (heijunka), line-balancing (vs. takt-time) etc. The book "Pull Production for the Shopfloor" from the Productivity Press Development Team is very easy to read and provides many information and simple drawings about the missing knowledge. Furthermore the book presents calculations about the influence of reducing lot size (set-up time), reducing unplanned machine downtime and the influence of scrap/rework. If you are really interested in understanding the bad influence of large lot size, machine unavailability and scrap/rework you need to take a deeper look into Operations Management, as provided by Quick-Response-Manufacturing, Factory Physics or other usefull books..
This book will do an excellent job combined with other books that cover the missing points. Adopting this production system requires more than sizing a system, you need to change the mindset of your workforce for relentless persuit of continuous improvement (Kaizen) and some understanding about the tools used together with this system: 5S, TPM, SMED, ZQC etc. Furthermore for complex manufacturing systems the question where to start with Pull-implementation of a single line becomes crucial. Sometimes you do not need even to turn your whole processes to pull and a mix of push-pull lines and pull lines might be a better approach for your needs. For people interested in making a splash and where Pull-systems do not seem to be the right approach, I strongly recommend to read Quick-Response-Manufacturing. This approach has many insights in common with JIT/Lean but is much easier to apply. The knowledge from operations management itself will even help to understand pull-systems and what they are based uppon.
Enjoy reading,
Oliver
Good.......2007-03-17
It covers all the important points of a Kanban System, yet you can read it in no time. I like it.
Great Implementation Book.......2005-01-17
Kanban Made Simple is a great book to help in teaching people how to implement Kanbans. While many people conceptually understand Kanban, they do not understand all the elements that go into sizing the kanban and into the design of the kanban. This book addresses all these elements (sizing, type, visual management, rollout, and batch size reduction)in a step by step method. I recommend it to all my clients.
Good BUT.......2005-01-14
Book is well organized. Chapters 3 (Data Collection) and 4 (Sizing the Kanban)need more detail. Overall, the book does take you through the process. CD is a waste of time. All the files are in PDF format. If these were in Word or Excel, it would be much easier to use.
Highly Recommended!.......2004-03-02
Visit any healthy manufacturing operation and you'll see a buzz of bewildering activity - parts being moved on overhead cranes, raw materials being wheeled in, line operators checking their production schedules before they change the line over to their next product. Those production schedules, as this book suggests, can really be a hindrance. Operators become dependent on them, although the schedules may not accurately reflect customer demand. The solution? Kanban, which is based on having a communication system right on the factory floor that communicates key indications of customer behavior - buying, ordering, canceling - directly to the workers themselves. Production activity, therefore, is actually scheduled based on customer demand rather than on past expectations, with the advantage that you hold less inventory and operate more effectively. This book (which comes with a compact disc of implementation directions) gives clear insight into this powerful scheduling system employed efficiently by Toyota and other world-class companies. We highly recommend it to executives, managers and supervisors of companies that earn their living by making widgets more successfully.

Book Description
Soybean is one of the world's leading sources of seed oil and seed protein and is grown extensively, particularly in the Americas and Asia. Indeed, soybean is the lowest-cost producer of vegetable oil, since the oil is a co-product of its protein-rich meal. Major advances have recently been made in our understanding of soybean genetics and molecular biology and of the applications of new technologies to soybean improvement. This book presents an up-to-date review of the state of this knowledge and is aimed at workers in legume agronomy, plant genetics, breeding and biotechnology.
Book Description
Researchers around the world depend upon having access to authoritative, up-to-date data. And for 90 years, they have relied on the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics for that data. This year is no exception. New tables, extensive updates, and added sections mean the Handbook has again set a new standard for reliability, utility, and thoroughness. New tables in this edition include: Index of Refraction of Inorganic Crystals, Upper and Lower Solution Temperatures of Binary Polymer Solutions, Miscibility of Organic Solvents, Density of Solvents as a Function of Temperature, and Coefficients of Friction. The Fundamental Physical Constants section has been updated with the latest CODATA/NIST values, and the Mathematical Tables appendix now features several new sections covering topics that include orthogonal polynomials Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, and statistics.
Customer Reviews:
Is it suitable for students?.......2005-11-12
I want to buy a reference book which is complete, compendious, and useful. Is this handbook suitable for students like us?
p.s. Please let me know if this one has tables that lists names and formulas of the most common chemical compounds, as well as the trivial names of them.
The Distilled Wisdom About Everything.......2004-12-02
I can't imagine a scientist or engineer of nearly any stripe without a copy of this book. I can't imagine a lab without at least one edition sitting around somewhere. The title says it's on chemistry and physics. And it is. But it's so much more. It's the consise summary of all of our technical knowledge. It represents the facts pulled out of nature by thousands of researchers since we humans began writing things down. And it's all in one place.
Yes, you could go to the web and find out nearly anything that's listed here, but it would take you decades. And when you're in the midst of doing something you want to reach up (this book is always on an upper shelf where you can see it) grab it and get the information you need right now.
Each edition, has expanded incrementally. You don't need to buy a new edition each year (unless you're in charge of the company library). But the changes add up, and every few years you need to upgrade.
With this edition, there's a freebie, a copy of the first edition. In the first edition you can read about all of the eighty one known elements. You can read about the electron (discovered only a few years before), but the proton and neutron hadn't been invented yet. And as for quarks. Well for quarks you need the new edition.
An incredible resource.......2004-10-14
If I were allowed only two reference books, they would be the OED and this.
This book doesn't have everything, it just seems that way. Listing the content would take pages, and much of it is chemical or physical arcana - if you need the data, you already know what to look for. At a more accessible level, it lists the frequencies of notes in several musical scales, information about common wire sizes, astronomical information, the chemical makeup of the human body, and ways to create carefully controlled humidity. That last one can be helpful to woodworkers; this book really does have something for almost everyone.
Although it comes out every few years, most people won't need to update very often. The definition of a volt, for example, changes rarely and only in small ways. This is a pricey book, but it holds its value pretty well.
This is the scientific reference book to have. If you know a student interested in any of the sciences, it's also a great book to give, and it's something that will be valued for years to come.

How to see How stuff works: basic reference.......2004-08-25
CRC Handbook Chemistry and Physics, 85th Edition, includes facsimile of the first 1913 edition by David R. Lide (CRC Press) This is the 85th Edition of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics and, coincidentally, the 15th edition produced by the current Editor-in-Chief. A facsimile of the First Edition of the Handbook, which appeared in 1913 and contained 116 pages, is being distributed with this volume. Comparison of the two provides a dramatic lesson on the rapid advance of science and technology in the ensuing nine decades. When the First Edition wits published only 81 elements were known, the electron had been discovered only 17 years before, and the proton and neutron were still unknown. Madame Curie had just won her second Nobel Prize, and Max Planck, Niels Bohr, and Albert Einstein had yet to be recognized with this honor. The size and scope of the Handbook have expanded in step with the growth of scientific knowledge. It has not only served as a reference source for professionals and students, but has provided inspiration to many young people as they developed their interest in science. The late Linus Pauling, in his Foreword to the 74th Edition, wrote "I attribute much of my knowledge about substances and their properties to my study of the information that the Handbook provided.
Throughout its history the overall philosophy of the Handbook has been to provide broad coverage of all types of data commonly encountered by physical scientists and engineers, with as much depth as can be accommodated in a one-volume format. While the Internet has spawned numerous large, comprehensive databases covering narrow areas of science, we feel there is still a need for a concise reference source spanning the full range of the physical sciences and focusing on key data that are frequently needed by R&D professionals, engineers, and students. We hope the CRC Handbook, in its print, CD-ROM, and Internet formats, can continue to serve these needs.
The 85th Edition includes updates and expansions of several tables, such as Aqueous Solubility of Organic Compounds, Thermal Conductivity of Liquids, and Table of the Isotopes. A new table on Azeotropic Data for Binary Mixtures has been added, as well as tables on Index of Refraction of Inorganic Crystals and Critical Solution Temperatures of Polymer Solutions. In response to user requests, several topics such as Coefficient of Friction and Miscibility of Organic Solvents have been restored to the Handbook. The latest recommended values of the Fundamental Physical Constants, released in December 2003, are included in this edition. Finally, the Appendix on Mathematical Tables has been revised by Dr. Daniel Zwillinger, editor of the CRC Standard Mathematical Tables and Formulae; it includes new information on factorials, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, orthogonal polynomials, statistical formulas, and other topics.
Represents our Technological Civilisation.......2004-07-31
Some years ago, an author in a science fiction magazine put forth a gedanken (thought experiment). Suppose you would be transported to another planet and you had to attempt to rebuild our civilisation. But you could only take 6 books with you.
What would you take?
Well, that author gave a list of his suggestions. One of which was this; well an earlier edition anyway. He pointed out something about the Rubber Handbook, which is what anyone who regularly uses this book calls it. So easy to take for granted, because in any lab, you can usually rummage around and find some edition of it. But it represents millions of hours of engineering and research to measure and collate its results.
If there is one book that summarises the engineering of our civilisation, it is this.
Always nice to see CRC continually updating it. But having said the above, whether you need this latest edition is another matter. The changes are incremental. If you have an older edition, and there is no specific reason to upgrade, then you probably shouldn't. Note that I did not say never. Just tell yourself you can defer it till next year. Then, at that time, ask yourself again.

Book Description
This book compares existing soil erosion models and determines their suitability for predicting the impacts of global change upon soil erosion. The common datasets used for the evaluation are drawn from both temperate and semi-arid areas; they represent 73 site-years of data from seven sites in three countries. Six field-scale erosion models are evaluated; five of these are continuous-simulation types (GLEAMS, EPIC, CSEP, MEDRUSH and WEPP), the other is event-based (EUROSERM). After an introduction, the results of the model evaluation exercise are presented. Subsequent sections deal with weaknesses or omissions in current modelling approaches, descriptions of specific erosion models, and potential or actual model applications.

Book Description
I have the ability to act interested in something a guy is saying when I m really thinking about how cute my new boots are.
Meet the girl who could be you if your perfectly planned life fell apart on Valentine's Day. Comfortably situated in her twenties, she is happy and sure of her future; until the day a waitress at some Mexican restaurant changes this smoker's life from absolute certainty to absolute insanity.
In this Ab Fab meets Bridget Jones adventure, follow our heroine through three years of good dates, bad moods and friends who always want to go dancing on Thursdays. This say-anything book is full of two-week relationships, way too many cigarettes, and the birth of her split personality, Glamourina.
Take a voyeuristic look into the mind of a girl who plans her life through daydreams and lip-gloss, while discovering the meaning of life at the bottom of a vodka tonic.
This could be the story of your life, if yours were as funny, tragic and fabulous as hers
Customer Reviews:
Waste of time.......2006-05-25
I tried and tried to become interested in this book and finally gave up completely at about the 3/4 mark. The editing was terrible, with many wrong words and misspellings. I have to say the editing was on a par with the story itself. Not good. I think this writer was trying for a Brigette Jones' Diary take-off, but it falls totally flat. Don't waste your money or time on it.
A Shining Brilliant Novel!.......2003-09-24
I cried and laughed...but mostly laughed at this incredible, impossible to put down book. Georgie Nickell shares an intimate and sometimes painful period of self discovery. Witty dialogue and one-liners will have you wishing they came from your own mouth. Better than Bridget Jones's Diary, this is a book for any man who wants to know what women really think and for any woman who has wanted to give up on dating.
Soon to be an underground classic, buy this book before your friends do. It's a great gift to give and an even better one to receive. I am eagerly looking forward to the next piece from this up and coming soon to be star author.
Everything you felt, but would never say.......2003-05-01
I found this book to be one of the greatest tools in mending a broken heart. Every raw emotion felt and every crazy thought that has crossed your mind through love and heart break is described within the pages of this book. I cannot describe how brilliant I believe this book to be, I only applaud Georgie Nickell for having the courage to expose her own heart and pain for us to read and relate to and to say the things more of us with we could express. Reading this book and all of the experiences she takes you through makes you want to light up with her over a vodka tonic with extra lime! Without a doubt any female old or young who has ever loved and lost would fall in love with book at page one.
A new voice for the fearless women of the world.......2003-03-22
Young and fearless women of the world, you have a new voice! And that is the voice of Glamourina, the alter-ego of "I Only Smoke on Thursday"'s main character. Author Georgie Nickell does an excellent and heartbreaking job of showing us the trials and triumphs of a girl just like us.
Georgie Nickell's first novel displays the humor of David Sedaris and the thoughtfulness of Anita Brookner.
Highly recommended.
Excellent Choice.......2003-03-05
This vulnerable journey through tissues and too many cigarettes triumps in overcoming insecurities and loss, only to find herself all the better and stronger for it. This character has experiences and emotions that all can relate to at one point or another, with just the right amount of kookiness and comic relief. Two thumbs up for Glamourina!
