Click your way to smart, successful investing, with techniques from one of the most beneficial Web sites on the Net
"A lively introduction to the latest investment scams, from phony research outfits to pump-and-dumps."-Worth
The market's wild ride of the 1990s and the rise of the Internet have put many investors in an enviously successful position. There are more investing opportunities than ever and quicker access to more information than most people knew existed. And yet there is one downside to the market boom that has grown as rapidly as the Dow-securities fraud. So, how do you get in on the online investing revolution while protecting your nest egg? In Stock Detective Investor: Finding Market Gems Online readers will learn strategies to make smarter investment decisions, spot and avoid scams while cutting through all the babble and hype to find investment goldmines. Containing everything from the 10 warning signs of a securities fraud to a step-by-step outline for doing your own legwork, Stock Detective Investor is a must for everyone who wants to safely and successfully invest online.
Kevin Lichtman founded FinancialWeb.com and Stock Detective in 1997 after working in the financial services industry for sixteen years. Financial-Web is the parent company of eighteen different free Web sites. Lynn Duke is a national award-winning journalist who worked for newspapers including the St. Petersburg Times for ten years before joining FinancialWeb.com.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of valuable information for any investor!.......2000-12-29
I think this book is great! I would have expected a book on stocks and investing to be rather dry but this book is very well written and quite readable. When I think of online investing, I think of buying and selling online but from this book I found there is an astounding amount of SEC and other information on companies out on the Internet these days enabling me to be able to research online as well. The authors have spelled out just what to look for and where to go for researching potential stock investments. The glossary in the back is handy (for me as a novice) as well as the appendix of investing related web site reviews. I have always been leery of stock investing, leaving it to my better half, but with the understanding and resources I am getting from this book, I have the confidence to venture carefully out... I would think ANYBODY who does any stock investing would DEFINITELY want to read this book!
Book Description
New York Times best-selling author, Robert Hagstrom argues that more than ever before the analytical tools displayed by the best fictional detectives are in fact high-level decision-making tools that can be learned and applied in the investment world. In fact, these skills are desperately needed to counter the market hype that has developed over the past decades.
Customer Reviews:
Clueless.......2006-08-04
The idea behind this book is that traits of good crime detectives will also be traits of good investment analysts.
This is done by giving small samples of some of literature's greatest detectives. Then you are to apply the traits you see in the markets.
Mystery lovers will be disappointed. As you are never given enough information to solve the detective's mysteries. Nor are you even given the solution as that would spoil your need to read the original. You instead get choppy pieces that don't really shed much light on anything.
Investors will also be disappointed. You are told such wisdom as do your own investigations, look at all the clues, keep an open mind, etc. No one could argue with such logic, however what did you learn from such things that you did not already know?
There are little or no ideas on where to look in the market for opportunity. There are no strategies discussed that have not been covered in dozens of other books.
It is not that I doubt what the author is saying. It is that I do not believe much is said that any reader would not already know. Of course knowing is different than doing, so perhaps someone would read this book and say "Oh yeah, he is right I should not rely on stock analysts" or "Hmmm market psychology would be a good thing to look into".
Book Description
Supply Market Intelligence: A Managerial Handbook for Building Sourcing Strategies charts the course to success for executives who are seeking to lead their organizations to supply-chain maturity. This volume is intended for supply-chain executives who struggle with the challenges of an uncertain supply market environment and whose supply chain function is constantly buffeted by unexpected changes in customer requirements and commodity prices. The author offers a more effective path, describing an integrated approach to supply chain management based upon solid market intelligence. This path is derived from the authors' multiple engagements with organizations such as Suncor Energy, Bank of America, Shell Oil, Honda of America, General Motors, Boston Scientific, Visteon, Federal Express, Sonoco, Duke Energy, Caterpillar, John Deere, GlaxoSmithKline, and many others. He emphasizes that the elements of a successful plan do not arise from a simple vision, instead they require much hard work and a focused approach backed by solid leadership. This book begins by defining supply market intelligence and discussing opportunities, the establishment of a project team, and conducting an internal business intelligence assessment. The book then examines the development of business and market intelligence, supplier evaluations, and sourcing strategies. It also explores how to execute a sourcing strategy, manage a strategic supplier relationship, and redesign an organization for effective supply-chain intelligence and strategic sourcing. This volume offers a benchmarking maturity model tool that covers all facets of end-to-end supply-chain management.

Excellent overview on the chemistry & fab. of nanostructures.......2005-01-11
This book is intended to give an overview to those entering the field on how to fabricate nanostructures and their underlying chemistry. The main focus is on the fundamentals such as synthes and fabrication and covers as large range of toptics: nanoparticles, nanowires, nanorods, thin films, and carbon nanotubes as well as a diverse range of patterning techniques (AFM, self-assembly through conventional lithographic techniques). The last chapter of about 20 pages on applications is a bit short and only gives a general feel. The book should be suitable to both advanced undergrads or grad. students in chemistry, material science, physics, and EE. I myself found it quite accessible for self-study. I especially, liked the first ~50 pags explaining the fundamental such as surface chemistry and excellent explanation of surface tension.

The coverage ranges from isolated clusters and small particles to nanostructured materials, multilayers, and nanoelectronics. The book contains a wealth of references for further reading. Individual chapters deal with relevant aspects of the underlying physics, materials science, and physical chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
More than just materials: Good Nanoscale Technology Coverage.......1998-08-03
Incredibly handy as both tutorial and reference. Every chapter worth the price of the book. Brings many diverse areas of nanoscale science and technology together(e.g.- C60 of course, but also subjects such as magnetotactic bacteria and nanoelectro-optics)in a well-organized single volume. Far too much good material to just borrow it from the library. A personal copy is needed so you can annotate the margins with the many ideas and cross-references this book is bound to stimulate. Belongs on your bookshelf next to Dresselhaus' "Science of Fullerenes and Carbon Nanotubes" or open on your desk along with some of Smalley's papers.

Book Description
At present, quantitative ecological risk assessment is widely used in different contexts, however very often without an understanding of the natural mechanisms that drive the processes of environmental and human risk. Its application is often accompanied by high uncertainty about risk values. On the other hand, the sustainability of modern technoecosystems is known because of their natural biogeochemical cycling that has been transformed to various extents by anthropogenic studies. Accordingly our understanding of the principal mechanisms that drive the biogeochemical food webs allows us to present a quantitative ecological risk assessment and to propose technological solutions for management of various ERA enterprises. It also enables us to devise a powerful mechanism for ecological insurance, to assign responsibilities and protect rights while managing the control of damage from natural and anthropogenic accidents and catastrophes.

Book Description
Modern Biogeochemistry is aimed to generalize modern ideas of biogeochemical developments during the last decades. It is designed to support a general course in biogeochemistry, and as such, is likely to have a broad market among the many universities and colleges that are adding such courses to their curricula. This book aims to supplement the existing textbooks by providing modern understanding of biogeochemistry, from evolutionary biogeochemistry to practical applications of biogeochemical ideas such as human biogeochemistry, biogeochemical standards and biogeochemical technologies.
To a certain extent this textbook is a summary of both scientific results of various authors and classes in biogeochemistry, that have been given to students by authors during the last 5 to 10 years at different universities throughout the world such as Cornell, Moscow, Seoul and Bangkok. Biogeochemistry is becoming an increasingly popular subject for graduate and postgraduate education. Courses in ecology, geography, biology, chemistry, environmental science, public health and environmental engineering all tend to have a biogeochemical component in their syllabuses to a greater or lesser extent.

Book Description
This volume covers in detail both the fundamental and practical properties of interstitial intermetallic materials, materials which are useful as hydrogen storage materials, as rechargeable hydrogen electrodes in batteries, and as new potential hard permanent magnetic materials. Various techniques, such as magnetic, diffraction, thermodynamic, and spectral methods, for studying these materials are covered in detail at a tutorial level. The synthetic methods used to obtain these new materials are also covered in detail. It combines the expertise from two different groups of scientists working on different properties and uses of several newly developed interstitial intermetallic materials. This includes scientists working on the thermodynamics of hydrogen storage materials and rechargeable hydride batteries and also those working on hard permanent magnetic materials. The two groups provide a different, but complementary, view of the properties of interstitial intermetallic materials. The book is intended for both scientists and engineers working in the field and advanced graduate students in the fields of chemistry, physics, materials science, and materials engineering.

Book Description
Jigajig is a novel about Africa and the way that it has evolved over the last forty years. Money, sex, power, and politics all play a part but there is no solemnity in this tale, which relies on the Swahili concept, Shauri ya Mungu, meaning Â`the affair of God.Â' This phrase is used liberally in East Africa to indicate that any misfortune is due to the whim of divine authority and not to human mismanagement.
The story is related through the eyes of Gavin Oatskin, who began his career as a young economist in an imaginary country called Kenzika and became the CEO of a multi-national organisation, rejoicing in the name of FATSO. An honourable man and a true friend of Africa, Gavin is appointed to run the country by the United Nations but the experiment misfires. Told in a series of episodes spread between 1967 and 2005, the action involves a range of colourful associates and moves between Kenzika, Britain, South Africa, and Australia.
It is left to the reader to decide whether there is still hope for AfricaÂ's future.
