Hot stocks may get all the attention in the press, but, Timothy Vick argues in Wall Street on Sale, you're not going to beat the market chasing the latest high flyer. Vick, founder and editor of the newsletter Today's Value Investor, demonstrates how building a winning portfolio means becoming a smart shopper. He starts by offering a thorough definition of value investing, listing its seven principles: buy assets on sale; form a notion of value; avoid losses with a "margin of safety"; adopt a "for-sale" perspective; stick to it; be a contrarian; and ignore the market. Vick looks at the stocks listed in the S&P 500 index from late 1994 to mid-1997. The stocks at the beginning of the test period with a price/earnings ratio below 7 gained an average of 228.3 percent compared to an 85.3 percent return for the entire index. Those low P/E or undervalued stocks were the real winners.

But there's more to being a smart shopper than just buying low P/E stocks. He cites the work of value-investment pros, such as Warren Buffett, James O'Shaughnessy, and Michael Price, mixing in enough tables, graphs, and case studies to prove ably that buying companies at sale prices is a hugely successful stock-picking method. He then shows how to discover hidden values, analyze financial ratios, and assemble a portfolio. And thanks to the development of the Internet, most necessary information is available for free; Vick includes an appendix of 150 Web sites. This is a how-to book for the investor seeking value--the investor that wants to get a dollar's worth of Wall Street for 85 cents. --Thom Hartle

3 out of 5 stars Best Investment book.......2003-11-12

I have read many investment books but this gets my vote for the best of all of them. It is very easy to read as it is so well written and Mr. Vick makes many points that are so indisputable that I plan to re-read and re-read this book many times over in order to see through the sales pitch that Wall Street often sells us.

5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2001-06-16

I'm a new investor, and this book was very understandable, practical, informative, enlightening, ect.. This is a very vaulable resource of information on investing. I highly reccomend it.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-06-02

The bull market has turned value investing into the neglected stepchild of wealth-building strategies. Tech companies have been big winners, and even value investing icon Warren Buffett has fallen on tough times. Still, Timothy P. Vick makes a compelling case for value investing. He dismisses such strategies as timing the market and chasing hot sector stocks as more gambling than investing. Vick argues that investors should seek bargain stocks by studiously researching companies and finding those whose current assets and future growth are undervalued by the market. Vick's useful rules for value investing include this first axiom: You buy cars and clothes on sale, so why not stocks? He lays out tools for determining when a stock is on sale, such as calculating return on equity and profit margins. While the subject matter is arcane, the way Vick conveys his message is easy to understand. We [...] recommend this book to investors on all levels (and it's far more cheery than the news from the market).

4 out of 5 stars Superb in some aspects but a little knowledge is . . ........2001-05-20

a dangerous thing

This book gives some of the clearest criteria I've seen in valuing a stock for a small individual investor and is very easy to read. I think it a little better than his book on Buffett which is basically a rehash of this one. The low reviews I can only assume in part are because of the timing of this book's release at the end of 1998 when value investing's popularity was reaching an all time low.

The book is very strong in giving and explaining yardsticks and indicators that could prove successful in screening stocks for a value portfolio. It talks about things you'd expect from a value book like a company's growth rate as related to its price, ROE, book value, etc. In addition though it goes into the interrelationship of interest rates, bond yields, and earnings yields and gives brief profiles of some value investors. It was easy to read, much simpler than something like Security Analysis for example.

There were problems though. The point raised in one of the previous reviews that the book gives somewhat of a contradiction in first criticizing forecasts and then turning around and using them is valid. Still I think that what Vick's examples show is how he thinks forecasts should be used and that his earlier criticism of forecasts was for the way others were misrepresenting them. It is unfortunate he did not take time to clarify his stand on this matter. The other thing I thought this book was weak in was on the experiential side. Not much in terms of what kind of stock price movement a value investor could expect during a holding period and what he should do. Doubtless an experienced value investor would hold but a beginner reading this book should be given a very clear idea of just how long it might take, the potential pitfalls that lie in wait and taught to constantly follow up on his analysis. The very clarity of the case and example style used by Vick might lead one inexperienced to believe that investing was more a matter of science than of art. Serious investors that go truly in depth and take the time to visit companies will also find this a rather boring book because of its classroom instruction sort of feel.

If you are a part time or beginning investor this book will give you a solid introduction to value investing and a convenient process by which to narrow down your search for value companies. If all you want to do is buy stocks, I would consider Wall Street on Sale to be more specialized and superior to an intro to corporate finance book for example which is more general but perhaps more complete. Like with any intro book it is dangerous to jump in immediately afterwards and think one is already proficient after just reading it. You'll need to be careful with the info here and experiment a little to see if it really suits your personality.

5 out of 5 stars A thought provoking look inside the Reagan White House.......2005-09-18

When he assumed the presidency, Ronald Reagan knew what had to be done to turn the country around after four years of ruinous Democrat rule. He also knew that in order to do it, he would have to find the best qualified men and women in the nation to carry out his policies. One of the men he selected was Donald Regan, the son of an Irish policeman, who had attended Harvard on a scholarship, served in the Marine Corp during World War II, and worked his way up through the ranks to become Chairman of the Board of Merrill Lynch. By the time Reagan became president, Donald Regan was a wealthy man contemplating a quiet retirement. Instead, he came aboard and became Secretary of the Treasury in Ronald Reagan's first term and, upon Reagan's re-election, his Chief of Staff. In this book, Regan takes us behind the scenes in the Reagan White House and lets us follow the action from the beginning of Reagan's administration up to the time of his resignation.

It is an insightful story told by a man who was there. Reading it, one gets the impression that Regan has never been given the credit he deserves for his contributions to the nation's economic recovery as Secretary of the Treasury. At the same time, one senses that Donald Regan may have been seriously misjudged by the reporters with whom he was forced to interact as Chief of Staff and, partly because of his so called "abrasive" personality, was harshly treated by the news media. Looking at things from the inside, rather than the outside, it also seems likely that Regan, in the public mind, was held responsible during the Iran/Contra Affair for things of which he had no knowledge and over which he had no control or authority.

In the end, Regan was forced to resign, and his resignation was accomplished in such a manner as to embarrass Regan and detract from what should have been an exemplary reputation. The impression one gets from this sad end is that it came about not because of anything Regan had done during the Iran/Contra Affair or because of his presumed abrasive personality, or even because he was constantly under attack by the press. In my view, it happened [in the way it did] simply because Ronald Reagan had been absolutely convinced that Donald Regan had committed the one unpardonable sin in Reagan's eyes. He had rebuffed and insulted Nancy Reagan and perhaps other members of the Reagan family.

This is an in-depth and enlightening study of the inner-workings of the Reagan White House, and since it is based on the meticulous notes kept by Donald Regan while part of that administration it will be an invaluable resource for future generations of historians. The strangest and most interesting thing, to me, about this book, however, is that despite the way in which he was (essentially) fired and in light of the fact that Reagan and Regan never met or spoke again; Donald Regan seemed to have an extremely difficult time saying anything bad about Ronald Reagan.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting and Entertaining Book.......2002-04-14

I thought this was a well written, interesting and entertaining book describing his time in the Reagan White House. The author was the topic so I always do discount a little of what I read, but from some of the other books, I have read, from the Reagan staff, it looks like he did not pull too many Al Haig's and get an over blown ego. The detail on his job in the treasury department was very interesting, the explanations of the Reagan economic policies and their effects of the debit levels and currency value was also well done. Very few authors could document this topic and make it interesting. I think the most press on this book was due to his explanation of his relationship with Nancy and her controlling of the president by some tarot card reader in San Francisco. He handled it well and it is a juicy bit in the book. If you are interested in the Reagan administration then this is a good book that keeps you interested. If you are looking for a Reagan love fest then I would pick up Meeses's book, it is like a teenager writing a love letter to a boy band.

5 out of 5 stars Offers An Innovative Educational Opportunity!.......1999-01-10

With the development of the Internet into a full-blown marketing success, a number of college courses and other instructional materials have surfaced to offer entrepreneurs hope of succeeding with their online businesses. Charles F. Hofacker has written Internet Marketing as a textbook for such a course.     This book covers a broad spectrum of topics related to Internet marketing. Concisely written, it's packed with key marketing principles and strategies for productive Website design, Website promotion, developing content, targeting audiences, advertising, generating revenue, online communications, and legal and ethical matters, to name a few. The author raises a number of important issues that require attention. A helpful glossary of terms is provided at the back of the book.     The author has created an innovative educational opportunity by designing interactivity between the book and its companion Website. Each chapter, a lesson by itself, is linked to the Website for additional course materials on its topic. Furthermore, students are able to capitalize upon the resources found on the Internet for live examples of the main points covered in the book. This approach allows students to work at their own pace at a time and location more convenient for them.      If you are looking for a detailed explanation of all the in's and out's of Internet marketing, this book is not for you. However, this book in conjunction with its companion Website does offer a concise education in Internet marketing principles. The content is on target. This book would make a great primer and resource tool when time is short!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quick intro with good marketing fundamentals.......1999-01-06

Hofacker's brief book provides an excellent quick introduction to the topic. Unlike many texts in this field, Hofacker is both up to date on the Internet and in touch with marketing fundamentals. Hofacker directly applies basic concepts from fields like consumer behavior to the field of Internet marketing. If you are starting from Square One, Hofacker's work is the weekend read you've been looking for. If someone were going to write a full-fledged textbook in this area, Hofacker's work would provide the essential core.

                            Book Description

At the end of an alleyway in London, a dark blue Jaguar is found neatly parked into an inconveniently placed brick wall. There is no sign of the driver or any clue as to who they were.

Meanwhile, a group of cynics who are fed up with how futile the world has become decide to payback society in a series of the most bizarre and pointless terrorist attacks ever.

The world's media attempt to discover if there is any link between these two incidents, or a link between any of a number of random incidents they overheard being discussed down the pub at lunchtime.

I believe this is Christian Cooks first novel, and reveals a very creative authorship which will only get better with future projects.

I was very impressed with Cook's character descriptions. This novel does not seem to revolve around one central character, but around a myriad of supporting characters, each beautifully crafted and unique, and how they view events in this mad world.

While there appears to be two central plot points; (solving a homicide mystery involving the London mafia, and ludicrous terrorist bombings/threats that make no sense to the world populace) the author does a fine job of taking serious events and putting a spin of dark humor on them. The characters really do take a serious approach to events, but clearly shows the reader how flawed we are as humans and interpret things so wrongly. The terrorists are anti-social, anti-commercial culture, anti-establishment but are bumbling fools. The cops involved in solving a mysterious homicide are portrayed as the keystone cops, yet they really do think they are doing well.

There are funny moments throughout the book that will have you laughing, but more that will make you smile or grin than will have you rolling on the floor. Again, its not so much the two plots that drive this book, but the bumbling characters and the desire to see what happens next to them and how they will handle it...brilliant.

The toughest obstacle for me as the reader was the constant jumping around of time frames and scenes. The novel doesn't flow chronologically as the reader is taken from 1999, to the late 60's, then to the mid 80's, etc...etc... And the plot points don't follow as well, it is as if you are reading 2-3 separate short stories, only for them to come together in a loose way towards the end of the book.

Now, I'm not knocking the novel. It was entertaining...the style to me reminded me of the movies 'Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels' meets 'Pulp Fiction'. Humor and tragedy coupled with both cultural and political statements.

I will read Cook's second novel if it is anything like Broken Eggshells.

5 out of 5 stars Strange but very refreshing!.......2001-04-22

Over the past several years, all the films and novels I've seen seem to fall into just 2 categories. On one side the cultural human relationship comedy, poking fun at society and on the other side, the gangster genre which has entered an ever spiralling style where each new offering attempts to be that much cooler and slicker than its predecessors. It's all become a bit stale.

Broken Eggshells sits in neither of these categories and yet occupies a space somewhere in between, though it would neatly sidestep any attempts to pin it down. The book is about a group of activists who decide society has become so futile that they teach the whole planet a lesson by embarking upon a plan of equally banal terrorism. A campaign of terror that sees bits of the Sahara and Siberia blown to kingdom come for no apparent reason.

The novel seems to have a `dig' at just about everything society holds dear but rather than preaching at us from some `holier-than-thou' angry-young-man platform, Cook revels and amuses in society's failings and shortcomings and enjoys them all the more. At the back of the novel, he even takes a subtle swipe at his own literary style.
