At the heart of this book is the age-old question of how law and morality are related. The legal positivist, insisting on the separation of the two, explicates the concept of law independently of morality. The author challenges this view, arguing that there are, first, conceptually necessary connections between law and morality and, second, normative reasons for including moral elements in the concept of law. While the conceptual argument alone is too limited to establish a sufficiently strong connection between law and morality, and the normative argument alone fails to address the nature of law, the two arguments together support a nonpositivistic concept of law, toppling legal positivism qua comprehensive theory of law. The author makes his case within a conceptual framework of five distinctions that can be variously combined to represent a multiplicity of presuppositions or perspectives underlying the enquiry into the relationship of law and morality. In this context, it can indeed be shown that there are perspectives that bespeak solely a positivistic concept of law. The decisive point, however, is that there is a perspective, necessary to the law, that necessarily presupposes a nonpositivistic concept of law. This is the perspective of a participant in the legal system, asking for the correct answer to a legal question in this legal system. The participant-thesis is demonstrated by appeal to Gustav Radbruch's formula (extreme injustice is not law) and to the judge's balancing of principles in deciding a concrete case. The author arrives at a concept of law that systematically links classical elements of legal positivism - authoritative issuance and social efficacy - with the desideratum of nonpositivistic legal theory, correctness of content.

Puts Responsibility back in Chemistry..........2002-05-10

Chemtrek is ideally suited to 1st year college or 2nd year high school chemistry use. Chemtrek uses conservation, cost, and waste reduction as design elements of its laboratory experiments, as a result the quality of hands-on lab activities shine because they focus Green or conservation practices often omitted in the chemistry Lab.

The book is worth while to teachers as a valuable reference of quality, thinking, lab activities , which stress what is happening and why over typical cookbook chemistry methods. If you can't use it in your lab, at least read it and see for yourself how these techniques can be applied to your classroom.

My College has saved, many thousands of dollars, in reduced chemical purchases, and saved even more in the waste disposal fees, not paid because the wastes were never produced using this methods. If you use small scale this book is for you, stop buying kits, and learn how to do it yourself.

This book offers us a view of thecniques used in a organic laboratory and shows a litle more about the principles. I will recomend to my students.

Interesting concepts for a new millenia.......1998-07-28

A master manual with a great deal of power for dealing with waste minimization at the source, instead of making a mess and cleaning it up later. After contacting the author, I was able to recieve a great deal of technical expertise and help in using the text to instruct and create my own small-scale laboratory where I teach. Great stuff!!!!

Useful but not complete.......1998-06-19

This lab manual is well written, and it makes good use of materials in the lab. The main caveat is that there is no teachers' edition. One simply doesn't exist.

Mediocre civil war .......2006-01-26

I might enjoy this more if I had read the other books first. I didn't know this was part of a series and bought it to read civil war, but the writer obviously isnt familiar with the period because she made mistakes with the battles and customs. I wanted a happier ending. Cat has a miscarriage and her husband has to go back to the war. I never find out if he survives or not. It wasn't finished and Im not interested enough to read the next book.

excellent set of books--i got the first 2 and now with crosswinds i will be able to complete the saga--my advise, get all three and plan on a nice reading weekend.

Book 3 of this awesome trilogy........2004-05-06

Do yourself a favor and order all 3 books now because once you start them, you won't want to interrupt the flow of this wonderful family saga. "Chase the Wind" begins with the love of Faith and Ian.....a romance her family forbids and a future that looks doomed. But Ian comes back to Faith the night before her arranged marriage and they steal away,chased mercilessly by the adamant, evil groom to be. They head west and begin their life, giving birth to wonderful twins.....jamie and jenny. The characters are larger than life. You can feel the love, share the emotions and live their dream...and of course fall in love with them. But the ex groom finds them and seeks revenge and the twins have to face the future alone, but together. "Chase the Wind" is a halfbreed they become friends with in the horrible orphanage where they all wind up and Chase becomes an integral part of the story as do others in the orphanage. All of the characters weave throughout all 3 bks of this incredible trilogy. Book 2, "Wind of the Wolf" is not as captivating as books 1 and 3 but is so essential to fill in those middle years in the twins lives and all the problems they encounter. It also introduces the new family they make and you will laugh and cry with those relationships and dialogue. And it explains so well the place of the wolf and the fox in the storyline which is very different and symbolic of chase and jamie's blood brother relationship. It really is the glue between the first and last book. It is so significant that jamie's son is called Fox! The last book Crosswinds is incredible.....This close knit group of friends face incredible decisions together and hardships. Severl of them go to fight in the civil war and again the characters entwine magically. New relationships are enlightening and those bad guys just won't give up! so there is plenty of action. One reviewer said that "crosswinds" is more civil war history than romance. What balogna. I have never read a series with more real love and affection than this trilogy. The civil war era is perfect for these friendships to be tested. But Jenny somehow follows chase to the battle area and cat surely follows Ty and gets involved in saving him and his men!!! And of course there other friends come to the rescue. There is no way to review this series to do it justice....Just buy them and read them. They will stay in your heart forever.I promise. Absolutely incredible

Excellent tale of war on the home front.......2004-02-19

"Crosswinds" continues the saga of the Duncan family and friends through the tragedy of the Civil War. Ms. Holby successfully conveys the worry, grief and hardships faced by the women on the home front while their men were away fighting. Cat must keep Ty's family together while he's away with his troops - and with THESE in-laws, that's no easy task! Civil War buffs will delight in Ms. Holby's accurate research - Ty's troops will remind many of Mosby's Rangers. And meanwhile, back in Wyoming, Jenny carries on the Duncan family legacy.... This is a worthy sequel to "Wind of the Wolf" and "Chase the Wind" that her fans won't want to miss!

sweeping Civil War tale.......2004-02-01

Though she knows she is being selfish, Catherine Lynch Kincaid desperately wants her husband Tyler to return from the war as she not only misses him, but more so wonders if she will ever become the mother of his children. Catherine prays everyday for Tyler's safe return as his family plantation home is lonely.

Tyler wants only to hold his beloved wife Catherine, but feels responsibility to his friends and relatives who have joined him in the fight for the Southern cause against Northern aggression. He feels his duty is to try to get as many of his comrades home alive as the War Between the States looks futile to Tyler as he anticipates the Confederacy losing. He prays every night that his darling Catherine waits for him assuming he makes it home still breathing.

CROSSWINDS is more a historical tale than a romance as the audience receives a terse vivid description of the costs of war at the front and the anguish for those waiting at home. Catherine is a delightful lead character struggling not to feel she is being selfish with her desires, but still yearning for her spouse to return to her. She represents the adage that there are no atheists amongst loved one waiting for a soldier at risk. Tyler is heroic though he would deny that as he wants to leave, but desertion would dishonor him and more critical hurt those people he cares about. Though too many subplots make it difficult to follow at times, CROSSWINDS is a sweeping Civil War tale that brings to the front the horrific mental impact on everyone associated with war.

Great Reading!.......2000-05-13

I just finished this set of three novels in less than a day (fortunately, I had the day off!) and they were wonderful! They're set in the time right after World War II and really incorporate some very interesting history in a painless way. The main character's growing relationship with God and then his opportunities to help others make their own spiritual connections are very inspirational without being saccharin, and the non-stop adventure is really gripping. Highly recommended!

These three books are only the first out of five. They are so exciting you can't put them down. They've got romance, adventure, history, and excitment. They take place in post-WWII times, focusing on the life of Captain (soon to be Colonel) Jake Burnes. It tells about his assignments in Europe, his best friend Pierre, and his fiance Sally. If you like adventure, read these!

Student of Military History.......2000-04-04

As a student at Texas A&M University taking a course in American Military History I cannot recommend any other book higher in the subject of the Air Force's role in Vietnam. From begining to end this book details policies, aircraft, and general deployments of bases in and around Vietnam. Additionally, this book is written on a higher educational level which allows for a more concise and accurate description of what the author is trying to convey. As a general history book I recommend Big Story by Peter Braestrup. However, if you wish to learn more about the Air Force specifically this book goes into greater detail throughout the entire war.
