Warning- Don't buy unless you have the software.......2005-04-13

I purchased this book, based on the description provided, assuming that the required CD ROM would be included. The course cannot be completed with the book alone, and there was no CD ROM. I contacted the publisher, and they told me that there is no way to purchase the CD by itself, that you could only purchase the book/CD bundle. As far as I can tell, the book/CD bundle is not being offered on Amazon. I feel completely ripped off.

Unless you want to be victimized in the same way, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

More and more often practitioners in process industry have to adapt their global production networks to changes in the competitive environment. A majority of the supply network design models proposed by academia does not sufficiently capture the economic and technical questions that have to be resolved. This work seeks to provide the necessary operations research decision support tools. It builds on the example of specialty chemicals industry, which faces a strong increase of competitive pressure and historically grown production networks that typically lack a coherent design strategy. Decision makers have to define a production network re-design strategy that allows them to capture the competitive advantages of a global production network. Therefore, the book proposes a planning process split into the two phases: global production network optimization and individual site selection. To support the former a comprehensive Mixed-Integer Linear Programming model is proposed while an approach based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process is suggested for the latter. Findings from a case study demonstrate the applicability of the tools presented to real-world production networks and the insights the use of OR methods can provide in practice.

Fluid dynamics models provide a powerful deterministic technique to approximate stochasticity in a variety of application areas. In this paper, we study two classes of fluid models, investigate their relationship as well as some of their applications. This analysis allows us to provide analytical models of travel times as they arise in dynamically evolving environments, such as transportation networks as well as supply chains. In particular, using the laws of hydrodynamic theory, we first propose and examine a general second-order fluid model. We consider a first-order approximation of this model and show how it is helpful in analyzing the dynamic traffic equilibrium problem. Furthermore, we present an alternate class of fluid models that are traditionally used in the context of dynamic traffic assignment. By interpreting travel times as price/inventory-sojourn-time relationships, we are also able to connect this approach with a tractable fluid model in the context of dynamic pricing and inventory management.

Traditionally healthcare systems have paid little attention to the management of inventories. However, with the implementation of diagnostic related groups by the United States government (which resulted in a pre-fixed level of compensation for specific medical services), these systems have turned their attention to cost containment as a means of increased profitability. This research addresses the issue of managing inventory costs in a healthcare setting. The specific problem addressed in this paper is a comparison of inventory costs and service levels of an in-house three-echelon distribution network vs. an outsourced two-echelon distribution network. In comparing inventory policies in both networks, we focus on non-critical inventory items. Based on our analysis, we find that the recent trend of outsourcing to distribute non-critical medical supplies directly to the hospital departments using them (i.e., the two-echelon network) results not only in inventory cost savings but also does not compromise the quality of care as reflected in service levels.

Big Disapointment.......2004-07-28

The author is an inarticulate crackpot who, during the internet boom, decided to try to cash in by writing about his job. It looks as though he spent very little time on the project, just stuffing words onto pages to stuff into a book to sell to the millions of people clamoring to spend their money online. If you look closely, you will see that the publisher of this book is a place where absolutely anyone can take an original manuscript to be published on demand and drop-shipped to customers on Amazon. This means I could write a book and fill each of the pages with "this is poop," list it, and sell it here to unsuspecting customers taking a chance on a new and unheard of author.

Joseph Zeff's work, intentionally or unintentionally, is that caliber of work.

I feel so elated and free after reading this book. I now understand how completely stupid I sound when I ask a tech a simple question.

Why, oh why didn't I do us both a favor and call from my 2nd phone line??? I will NEVER pester a tech again! It's the only place in the world where sub-human ignorant scum like myself belong.
