    5 out of 5 stars Great Primer!.......2000-06-14

This is one of the best, yet concise work that I have seen. SCM is like art...many terms and interpretations exist. It's not about moving stuff but a strategy. Therein lies the strength of this book.

It starts with a fundamental look at value and value drivers and how they relate to business strategy down the supply chain. The beginning chapter also introduces a valuable schematic representation of strategic options that drives value through the transformational process. Each transformational option is examined in detail subsequently chapter by chapter.

Each chapter in turn is peppered with cases covering a broad industry segment to illustrate each transformational option.

Overall, it's an excellent practical primer for the practitioner looking for stepping stones to transform the supply chain. Don't expect to find all the answers. However you can be assured that this book will open you up to a host of new ideas and change your thinking in the process. It did mine!

It's very welcomed reading and a great departure from the many books on SCM many of which tends to lean more towards the theoretical.

4 out of 5 stars An honest attempt to provide advice on Supply Chain thinking.......1998-11-05

This book does not pass itself off as a deep text as to finding the Holy Grail in Supply Chain terms. So do not buy it if you are looking for a complex set of answers.

But please buy it if you are starting to think that some of your problems, or more importantly some of your opportunities, are some how linked to the way in which your business operates.

Not business is an island so we depend on others who thus bring variation and their own shortfalls into our business, even though we may not see this when we are so close to every day decision making.

The table 1.2 is the simplest decsription I have ever seen as to the 9 types of supply relationships.

A practical book, soft cover so not overtly pretentious, and good value for those who can use some ideas to create their own.

I have been using the Saunders Interactive Chemistry as a supplement to my college course and have found it to be very user friendly and helpful. Examples within are interesting and relate well to real world applications. Chemistry is a difficult science but the Saunders Interactive Chemistry goes to the next level ensuring that the student stays interested and focused without doing too much for the student. I recommend this to all my friends who are thinking about taking chemistry or may be having a hard time with the subject. I am even buying a new one to replace the one that was lost.

Used Kotz/Treichel for Honors General Chem for Chemical and Environmental Engineers, Chemistry and Biochem majors here at U of Delaware. If you're taking any kind of honors/advanced general chemistry, don't waste your money- the book reads like a children's story. If, however, you're new to general chemistry, it provides a good foundation and is a pretty good place to start.

I disliked this book. It unfortunately comprimises a good learning experience for advanced technology. I am probably a textbook person, and I enjoy hilighting. I did not get much from this CD-Rom

                    Description:
Improvements in measurement technology are permitting development of a more detailed scientific understanding of the cycling of mercury in the global atmospheric environment. Critical to advancing the state of knowledge is the acquisition of accurate measurement of speciated mercury (gaseous and particulate) at ground research stations in a variety of settings located around the globe. This paper describes one such research effort conducted at TVA's Look Rock air quality monitoring site in Tennessee-a mountain top site (813m elevation) just west of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the largest National Park in the eastern US and it receives environmental protection under a variety of US statutes. Gaseous and particle mercury species along with some additional trace gases were measured at Look Rock during two field studies totaling 84 days in the spring and summer of 2004. Average results for the entire sampling period are: gaseous elemental mercury Hg(0): 1.65ngm^-^3, reactive gaseous mercury RGM: 0.005ngm^-^3, particulate mercury Hg(p): 0.007ngm^-^3. Literature review indicates that these levels are within the range found for other rural/remote sites in North America and worldwide. Reactive and particulate mercury comprised together less than 1%, on average, of total airborne mercury at Look Rock. When compared to the global background mercury literature, the Look Rock measurements demonstrate that the atmospheric mercury levels in the vicinity of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are clearly dominated by the global atmospheric pool, not by local or regional sources.

                      Description:
Simultaneous measurement of gaseous elemental, reactive gaseous, and fine particulate mercury took place in Tuscaloosa AL, (urban airshed) and Cove Mountain, TN (non-urban airshed) during the summers of 2002 and 2003. The objective of this research was to (1) summarize the temporal distribution of each mercury specie at each site and compare to other speciation data sets developed by other researchers and (2) provide insight into urban and non-urban mercury speciation effects using various statistical methods. Average specie concentrations were as follows: 4.05ngm^-^3 (GEM), 13.6pgm^-^3 (RGM), 16.4pgm^-^3 (Hg-p) for Tuscaloosa; 3.20ngm^-^3 (GEM), 13.6pgm^-^3 (RGM), 9.73pgm^-^3 (Hg-p) for Cove Mountain. As a result of urban airshed impacts, short periods of high concentration for all mercury species was common in Tuscaloosa. At Cove Mountain a consistent mid-day rise and evening drop for mercury species was found. This pattern was primarily the result of un-impacted physical boundary layer movement, although, other potential impacts were ambient photochemistry and air-surface exchange of mercury. Meteorological parameters that are known to heavily impact mercury speciation were similar for the study period for Tuscaloosa and Cove Mountain except for wind speed (ms^-^1), which was higher at Cove Mountain. For both sites statistically significant (p <0.0001), inverse relationships existed between wind speed and Hg^0 concentration. A weaker windspeed-Hg^0 correlation existed for Tuscaloosa. By analyzing Hg concentration-wind speed magnitude change at both sites it was found that wind speed at Cove Mountain had a greater influence on Hg^0 concentration variability than Tuscaloosa by a factor of 3. Using various statistical tests, we concluded that the nature of Tuscaloosa's atmospheric mercury speciation was the result of typical urban airshed impacts. Cove Mountain showed atmospheric mercury speciation characteristics indicative of a non-urban area along with potential influence from steady regional input of mercury pollution from larger sources.

                        Description:
We report emissions of mass, light absorption, particle number, chemical composition and size-resolved organic species from an industrial boiler that burned natural gas and residual oil. Organic compounds detected from oil combustion are mainly alkanes; it is not a major source of identifiable polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) make up approximately 38% and 15% of the particles from oil burning, respectively. Mass emissions from natural gas were below detection limits. A number peak of ultrafine aerosol (diameters lower than 10nm) was always associated with oil burning. Burning at full power produced the greatest number of particles in the accumulation mode. Natural gas also produced fine particles, but at a much lower rate. The emission rate of light-absorbing particles from this relatively new boiler is lower than that in current emission inventories. However, real-time measurements show a large contribution to emitted light absorption from boiler warm-up and transients, even those with very short durations. The measured absorption is best explained with a constant absorption cross-section for EC, rather than predictions based on size distribution or mixed aerosol; this finding is consistent with EC in fractal-aggregate form. We compare the emissions with those of a lignite stoker, which this boiler replaced during environmental cleanup in the mid-1990s. Emissions of mass, light absorption and particles are lowest from natural gas, but the oil boiler is also a substantial improvement: emissions of particulate matter are 100 times lower, and emitted absorption is three times lower. However, the oil-burning emissions have a greater net warming effect per mass than those of the lignite plant.

                          Description:
This paper proposes a new technique to extract elemental Se from soil and sediment samples. In this study, we have identified that the purchased red elemental selenium standard (PF-Se) was impure and rather consisted of a mixture of CS"2 soluble amorphous elemental Se (ca. 10%, w/w), water soluble oxidized Se (ca. 15-17%, w/w) and, CS"2 insoluble red monoclinic elemental Se. In more recent studies, a slow oxidation and a mineral phase transition of this sample was also observed. The solubility of the amorphous elemental Se in CS"2 was at least 0.64mgL^-^1. The black elemental Se purchased from Sigma-Aldrich had a much lower solubility in CS"2 (7.2@mgmL^-^1) compared to that given in the literature. Any selenium compounds with electrical charge and polar nature is insoluble in CS"2. In a sodium sulphite solution, PF-Se was completely dissolved thus giving a clear indication of the lack of selectivity in that extraction system. Other comparative studies also demonstrated that over extraction did occur with the Na"2SO"3 method. Compared to Na"2SO"3, CS"2 extraction of elemental Se is not only much simpler, straightforward and with higher analytical precision, but also much more selective and accurate. With HG-AFS, the detection limit can reach as low as 1.0ngg^-^1 in sediment sample owing to a low reagent blank of CS"2 solvent.

                              Description:
Semi-continuous measurements of ambient mercury (Hg) species were performed in Detroit, MI, USA for the calendar year 2003. The mean (+/-standard deviation) concentrations for gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), particulate mercury (HgP), and reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) were 2.2+/-1.3ngm^-^3, 20.8+/-30.0, and 17.7+/-28.9pgm^-^3, respectively. A clear seasonality in Hg speciation was observed with GEM and RGM concentrations significantly (p <0.001) greater in warm seasons, while HgP concentrations were greater in cold seasons. The three measured Hg species also exhibited clear diurnal trends which were particularly evident during the summer months. Higher RGM concentrations were observed during the day than at night. Hourly HgP and GEM concentrations exhibited a similar diurnal pattern with both being inversely correlated with RGM. Multivariate analysis coupled with conditional probability function analysis revealed the conditions associated with high Hg concentration episodes, and identified the inter-correlations between speciated Hg concentrations, three common urban air pollutants (sulfur dioxide, ozone, and nitric oxides), and meteorological parameters. This analysis suggests that both local and regional sources were major factors contributing to the observed temporal variations in Hg speciation. Boundary layer dynamics and the seasonal meteorological conditions, including temperature and moisture content, were also important factors affecting Hg variability.
