ASIN: 0761139095 |
Book Description
Anyone with a little extra cas and a plane ticket can take a "grand tour" of Europe. But a tour of the Solar System? Now that's an experience deserving of the word grand. Introducing the new edition of the book praised as "spectacular" (London Times), "eye-boggling" (Future Life), "concise and informative...the colorful and imaginative paintings steal the show"(Chicago Tribune), with "page after page filled with new colour paintings, each the well-controlled evocation of a spectacular scene"(Scientific American). Originally published in 1981 and revised in 1993, TheGrand Tour, an astronomy classic with 196,000 copies in print, takes readers on an imaginative trip through every corner of the solar system, in much the same way as Cook's once took travelers on a grand tour of the continent. Completely updated and revised and drawings on discoveries made by Voyager I and II, Magellan, Galileo, the Hubble Space Telescope, the Mars Global Surveyor Mission and other space initiatives, The Grand Tour is a dazzling journey that combines lush art and up-to-the-minute science. One hundred new paintings give travelers an unprecedented view of phenomena such as Saturn's rings from Saturn itself; the rusty-reddune fields of Mars; the rugged surface of Mercury, saturated with impact craters; and the Kuiper Belt of planetesimals, the largest of which is Pluto--now considered a half-planet. From the vast reaches of Jupiter to tine frozen Rhea, like a snowball orbiting around Saturn, it is a journey of astonishing proportions.Customer Reviews:

A 3-Channel 14-Bit Optimum SNS Wideband Digital Antenna: Analysis of theElectro-Optic Sampling Front End
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423564367 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A852143. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Space considerations onboard naval surface ships frequently preclude adequate separation between high frequency (HF) transmit antennas and HF receive only antennas. As a result, high power shipboard emanations (for example Link- 11), interfere with low power signals of interest operating within the same frequency band. Symmetrical Number System (SNS) digital antennas provide high resolution direct digitization of wideband signals with excellent in band signal rejection characteristics, which makes them ideal for operating within high RF environments. This thesis describes the design, construction, testing and analysis of the optical electronics at the front end of a prototype optimum SNS digital antenna with a desired accuracy of 14 bits and a bandwidth of 2.5 MHz. The digital antenna utilizes pulsed laser sampling in conjunction with a parallel configuration of Mach-Zehnder interferometers which provide superior bandwidth and isolation performance over electronic sampling mechanisms. The interferometer folded output signal is in accordance with the optimum Symmetrical Number System (SNS) which yields the maximum amount of information from a folding waveform. The theory and experimental performance of the optical subsystem and the analog electronics subsystem is presented, and the total system performance is evaluated. A summary of results and a conclusion with recommendations for improvements to follow-on systems is also discussed.

Analysis of Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) Radar Signals Using Cyclostationary Processing

The Storming Media report number is A110704. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: LPI radar is a class of radar systems that possess certain performance characteristics that make them nearly undetectable by today's digital intercept receivers, This presents a significant tactical problem in the battle space To detect these types of radar, new digital receivers that use sophisticated signal processing techniques are required This thesis investigates the use of cyclostationary processing to extract the modulation parameters from a variety of continuous-wave (CW) low-probability-of- intercept (LPI) radar waveforms, The cyclostationary detection techniques described exploit the fact that digital signals vary in time with single or multiple periodicities, because they have spectral correlation, namely, non-zero correlation between certain frequency components, at certain frequency shifts, The use of cyclostationary signal processing in a non-cooperative intercept receiver can help identify the particular emitter and can help develop electronic attacks, LPI CW waveforms examined include Frank codes, polyphase codes (Pt through P4), Frequency Modulated CW (FMCW), Costas frequencies as well as several frequency-shift- keying/phase-shift-keying (FSK/PSK) waveforms It is shown that for signal-to- noise ratios of OdB and -6 dB, the cyclostationary signal processing can extract the modulation parameters necessary in order to distinguish among the various types of LPI modulations.

An Analysis of Mutually Dispersive Brown Symbols for Non-Linear Ambiguity Suppression
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 142351100X |
Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A636104. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis significantly advances research towards the implementation of optimal Non-linear Ambiguity Suppression (NLS) waveforms by analyzing the Brown theorem. The Brown theorem is reintroduced with the use of simplified linear algebraic notation. A methodology for Brown symbol design and digitization is provided, and the concept of dispersive gain is introduced. Numerical methods are utilized to design, synthesize, and analyze Brown symbol performance. The theoretical performance in compression and dispersion of Brown symbols is demonstrated and is shown to exhibit significant improvement compared to discrete codes. As a result of this research a process is derived for the design of optimal mutually dispersive symbols for any sized family. In other words, the limitations imposed by conjugate LFM are overcome using NLS waveforms that provide an effective-fold increase in radar unambiguous range. This research effort has taken a theorem from its infancy, validated it analytically, simplified it algebraically, tested it for realizability, and now provides a means for the synthesis and digitization of pulse coded waveforms that generate an N-fold increase in radar effective unambiguous range. Peripherally, this effort has motivated many avenues of future research.

Product Description
This is a ARMY AEROMEDICAL RESEARCH LAB FORT RUCKER AL report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A436743. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: To satisfy the Army's need for realistic safe limits for heavy weapons noise while wearing hearing protection, a 2-1/2 year study was undertaken. Using active duty military volunteers, 64 subjects established that the auditory system could be adequately protected with the RACAL muff from one to three exposures of the reverberant waveforms obtained from a rocket launcher out of an enclosure. Thus, nonauditory considerations set the exposure limits for this type of waveform. This research was accomplished under Task Order 1. Using 27 subjects, two types of nonlinear (increasing attenuation with level) hearing protection were evaluated using 6 to 100 exposures of a freefield waveform of 1.5-ms duration. With the limited number of subjects, neither plug was adequate to protect the auditory system from this type of waveform. Several subjects had a temporary threshold shift (TTS) of their hearing of more than 25 dB. The compressible foam plug did appear to provide adequate protection up to the auditory limits for this waveform. This research was accomplished under Task Order 4.
