            Book Description

Anyone with a little extra cas and a plane ticket can take a "grand tour" of Europe. But a tour of the Solar System? Now that's an experience deserving of the word grand. Introducing the new edition of the book praised as "spectacular" (London Times), "eye-boggling" (Future Life), "concise and informative...the colorful and imaginative paintings steal the show"(Chicago Tribune), with "page after page filled with new colour paintings, each the well-controlled evocation of a spectacular scene"(Scientific American). Originally published in 1981 and revised in 1993, TheGrand Tour, an astronomy classic with 196,000 copies in print, takes readers on an imaginative trip through every corner of the solar system, in much the same way as Cook's once took travelers on a grand tour of the continent. Completely updated and revised and drawings on discoveries made by Voyager I and II, Magellan, Galileo, the Hubble Space Telescope, the Mars Global Surveyor Mission and other space initiatives, The Grand Tour is a dazzling journey that combines lush art and up-to-the-minute science. One hundred new paintings give travelers an unprecedented view of phenomena such as Saturn's rings from Saturn itself; the rusty-reddune fields of Mars; the rugged surface of Mercury, saturated with impact craters; and the Kuiper Belt of planetesimals, the largest of which is Pluto--now considered a half-planet. From the vast reaches of Jupiter to tine frozen Rhea, like a snowball orbiting around Saturn, it is a journey of astonishing proportions.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading, great viewing.......2006-07-24

I prefer photographs (or images made from spacecraft) over paintings, and I bought this book to raise my kids' interest in space. Well, it was my prejudice. The book has loads of the newest images, including some from the Cassini-Huygens mission, and the paintings are great, in the sense that they are not fantasy, but "down-to-earth" renderings of wiews we could have if we were there. Much better than I expected. And it is not only the images. Great text, great reading.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, well-written survey of the worlds of the solar system .......2006-06-01

This excellent coffee-table book is a fascinating exploration of the solar system. It is gratifying to see this book, now in its 3rd edition, revised regularly to reflect the many continuing new discoveries of the last 25 years.

This survey, written for the layman, thoroughly covers all of the important worlds of our solar system. It also discusses our solar system's formation and what we know about extrasolar planets.

Most books on the solar system introduce each planet in turn from Mercury outward to Pluto. This book starts with Jupiter and proceeds in descending order by size. This unusual approach emphasizes that these worlds vary as a continuum, encouraging comparison between small planets and large satellites, between satellites and asteroids, between asteroids and comets.

Part I covers the 28 largest worlds in the solar system, from Jupiter to Ceres. Part II covers selected interesting worlds, such as Halley's Comet, asteroids Vesta, Eros, Hektor, and Chiron, and moons Amalthea, Mimas and Miranda. Part III discusses extrasolar planets. A glossary covers terms such as centaurs, differentiation, millibars, and retrograde.

The illustrations and photography are especially worthwhile. Miller and Hartmann dramatically illustrate the wonder and majesty of space with a mix of actual photographs and artist's renditions.

The book reflects the current indecision regarding Pluto. However, the authors opine that the solar system is most sensibly viewed as having eight planets, with Pluto the largest Kuiper Belt object and Ceres the largest asteroid.

Two other newly-discovered trans-Neptunian objects receive a chapter: Sedna, possibly the first known Oort Cloud object, and 2004 DW (now called Orcus), the largest-known TNO at press time.

Press time for this book was spring 2005. The book therefore includes a Huygens image of Titan taken in January, but just missed the uproar caused by the July discovery of 2003 UB313/"Xena".

Surprisingly, there is no table listing the diameters, periods, and other vital statistics of the planets and moons. The only other drawback that comes to mind is that there is no chapter devoted to the Sun.

On another plane, Miller and Hartmann use the solar system's diversity to emphasize our good fortune in having such a wonderful Earth, and remind us to take better care of our home. They also speculate about the possibility of past or present life on Mars, Europa, Titan, and extrasolar planets. They conclude by speaking of a Copernican revolution, away from Earth and humanity as the literal and figurative center of the universe, towards a humbler view of our place in the cosmos.

The unorthodox presentation and the spectacular illustrations earn this book a place in any library on astronomy.

3 out of 5 stars Novel Organization, Nice Art & Pics, Lightweight Text.......2005-11-25

'The Grand Tour' is a nice small-format cofee-table-type book, with a modest selection of actual pictures from various space probes and a greater number of pleasing artwork renditions of the varios planetary bodies (54 in all, according to the cover..I didn't count them myself), and a small number of simple diagrams. The accompanying text seems pretty up-to-date and accurate, but does not go into any great depth explaining subjects such as solar system objects' composition, evolution, atmospheric structure and dynamics, and possible exobiology; most of these subjects are touched upon, but only superficially, and there isn't consistent treatment from object to object, neither in text structure/organization nor content scope. The organizational scheme presenting the solar system bodies from largest to smallest is a novel departure from the standard closest-to-farthest scheme. Buy this book mainly for the artwork, as a visual complement to more scholarly books about the solar system in your library.

5 out of 5 stars One of the classic books on the solar system.......2000-02-23

Written in the style of a traveller's guide book, the authors take you on an interplanetary cruise describing each body in detail. The book runs from the largest (the Sun) to the smallest objects (comets and tiny asteroids) in the solar system. The illustrations are either photos from spacecraft that have visited the various planets and moons, or are hypothetical paintings based on what the surfaces may look like. One particularly striking painting is of the surface of Pluto, with the sun as a mere bright speck in the sky.

I'd recommend this book to anyone with a passing interest in astronomy or the planets, it's a great read and never gets obtusely technical. Ron Miller and William K. Hartmann are without a doubt the finest planetary artists around today.

5 out of 5 stars Not a typical book on the solar system........2000-01-02

An excellent book with stunning original hand-painted art. This book discusses the worlds of our solar system rather than the planets. Each body, no matter what pigeon hole or classification it has been placed into in the past, is treated as a unique world with its own landscape, sky, weather, and character. Planets, moons, asteroids, comets, etc. are organized by size rather than type, yielding some very surprising revelations.

The Storming Media report number is A852143. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Space considerations onboard naval surface ships frequently preclude adequate separation between high frequency (HF) transmit antennas and HF receive only antennas. As a result, high power shipboard emanations (for example Link- 11), interfere with low power signals of interest operating within the same frequency band. Symmetrical Number System (SNS) digital antennas provide high resolution direct digitization of wideband signals with excellent in band signal rejection characteristics, which makes them ideal for operating within high RF environments. This thesis describes the design, construction, testing and analysis of the optical electronics at the front end of a prototype optimum SNS digital antenna with a desired accuracy of 14 bits and a bandwidth of 2.5 MHz. The digital antenna utilizes pulsed laser sampling in conjunction with a parallel configuration of Mach-Zehnder interferometers which provide superior bandwidth and isolation performance over electronic sampling mechanisms. The interferometer folded output signal is in accordance with the optimum Symmetrical Number System (SNS) which yields the maximum amount of information from a folding waveform. The theory and experimental performance of the optical subsystem and the analog electronics subsystem is presented, and the total system performance is evaluated. A summary of results and a conclusion with recommendations for improvements to follow-on systems is also discussed.

The Storming Media report number is A110704. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: LPI radar is a class of radar systems that possess certain performance characteristics that make them nearly undetectable by today's digital intercept receivers, This presents a significant tactical problem in the battle space To detect these types of radar, new digital receivers that use sophisticated signal processing techniques are required This thesis investigates the use of cyclostationary processing to extract the modulation parameters from a variety of continuous-wave (CW) low-probability-of- intercept (LPI) radar waveforms, The cyclostationary detection techniques described exploit the fact that digital signals vary in time with single or multiple periodicities, because they have spectral correlation, namely, non-zero correlation between certain frequency components, at certain frequency shifts, The use of cyclostationary signal processing in a non-cooperative intercept receiver can help identify the particular emitter and can help develop electronic attacks, LPI CW waveforms examined include Frank codes, polyphase codes (Pt through P4), Frequency Modulated CW (FMCW), Costas frequencies as well as several frequency-shift- keying/phase-shift-keying (FSK/PSK) waveforms It is shown that for signal-to- noise ratios of OdB and -6 dB, the cyclostationary signal processing can extract the modulation parameters necessary in order to distinguish among the various types of LPI modulations.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A636104. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis significantly advances research towards the implementation of optimal Non-linear Ambiguity Suppression (NLS) waveforms by analyzing the Brown theorem. The Brown theorem is reintroduced with the use of simplified linear algebraic notation. A methodology for Brown symbol design and digitization is provided, and the concept of dispersive gain is introduced. Numerical methods are utilized to design, synthesize, and analyze Brown symbol performance. The theoretical performance in compression and dispersion of Brown symbols is demonstrated and is shown to exhibit significant improvement compared to discrete codes. As a result of this research a process is derived for the design of optimal mutually dispersive symbols for any sized family. In other words, the limitations imposed by conjugate LFM are overcome using NLS waveforms that provide an effective-fold increase in radar unambiguous range. This research effort has taken a theorem from its infancy, validated it analytically, simplified it algebraically, tested it for realizability, and now provides a means for the synthesis and digitization of pulse coded waveforms that generate an N-fold increase in radar effective unambiguous range. Peripherally, this effort has motivated many avenues of future research.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A436743. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: To satisfy the Army's need for realistic safe limits for heavy weapons noise while wearing hearing protection, a 2-1/2 year study was undertaken. Using active duty military volunteers, 64 subjects established that the auditory system could be adequately protected with the RACAL muff from one to three exposures of the reverberant waveforms obtained from a rocket launcher out of an enclosure. Thus, nonauditory considerations set the exposure limits for this type of waveform. This research was accomplished under Task Order 1. Using 27 subjects, two types of nonlinear (increasing attenuation with level) hearing protection were evaluated using 6 to 100 exposures of a freefield waveform of 1.5-ms duration. With the limited number of subjects, neither plug was adequate to protect the auditory system from this type of waveform. Several subjects had a temporary threshold shift (TTS) of their hearing of more than 25 dB. The compressible foam plug did appear to provide adequate protection up to the auditory limits for this waveform. This research was accomplished under Task Order 4.
