    5 out of 5 stars A well written A to Z of Outsourcing.......2001-11-05

Do you work for an outsourcing provider?
J Brian Heywood's book about outsourcing is a comprehensive look at the topic from the perspective of both the client considering outsourcing as a way to improve their competitiveness and the outsourcing service provider. Both types of organisations will gain an invaluable insight into the outsourcing world. The book gives sound advice and backs up the advice with loads of actual examples. The author explains how outsourcing, if handled correctly, has the potential to produce real tangible saving for all types of organisations, not just large ones. He also explains how outsourcing arrangements can fail and what clients and service providers should do to limit their risks of failure.
    The book answers the questions:
    · Why outsource?
    · What are the benefits of outsourcing?
    · Which functions should an organisation should consider outsourcing?
    · What are the alternatives to full outsourcing?
    · How does an organisation choose an outsourcing service provider?
The author argues the case for a `Business Satellite' approach to outsourcing where the client and the service provider establish a separate organisation that is jointly owned so both can share in the future benefits generated from the outsourcing agreement.
I would say that this book is a must read for any organisation looking for ways to improve their competitiveness in today's market.

                                    Book Description

For how thy memory has lingered on–
In spite of cruelest winter’s drear and howl–
By inner mirror seen; I’ve dwelled upon,
I must confess, my treachery most foul.

Did Shakespeare pen a series of passionate sonnets, unknown to modern scholarship, ardently praising a mysterious dark-haired beauty? This tantalizing question is raised in a letter to literature professor Rose Asher. But the letter’s author, Rose’s star pupil, is not telling. A troubled, enigmatic young man, he plunged to his death in front of the college’s entire faculty, an apparent suicide. Determined to find the truth, Rose journeys from New York to Italy, back to the magnificent Tuscan villa where as an undergraduate she first fell in love.

La Civetta is a dreamlike place, resplendent with the heady scent of lemon trees and the sunset’s ocher wash across its bricks and cobbles. Once there Rose finds her first love still in residence. Torn between her mission and her rekindled feelings, Rose becomes enmeshed in a treacherous tangle of secrets and scandal. A folio containing what some believe to be one of Shakespeare’s lost sonnets has vanished, and literary immortality awaits whoever finds the manuscript–as do a vast Italian estate and a Hollywood movie deal. Uncertain whom she can trust and where she can turn, Rose races against time and unseen enemies in a bid to find the missing masterpiece.

Lush, lyrical, and enthralling, The Sonnet Lover vividly brings to life the Tuscan countryside and the fascinating world of the Renaissance poets. Unmatched in her ability to evoke atmosphere and intrigue, Carol Goodman delivers her most ambitious and satisfying work to date, a seductive novel that skillfully propels its reader headlong to the final suspenseful page.

I chose this book from the "Browsing" section of the library with high hopes: I am a member of a Shakespeare Study Circle; I've spent time in Italy and am a free-lance writer. This looked like the perfect summer novel for me.

Recently I've noticed an increasing number of grammatical errors in published novels and wondered how that could happen. In this one,I made it to p. 55 and read: "It wasn't me who was dying..." How could a competent writer make such a basic grammatical error? How could a careful editor let it pass? How could I, as a reader, trust them?

I did finish the book, noting other errors along the way. The careless writing ruined this novel.

                                    3 out of 5 stars A Weak Protagonist Spoils a Good Mystery.......2007-08-05

I have read Carol Goodman's novel with some interest over the past six or so years; mainly, it must be admitted, because I worked with her brother when her first novel came out and I had the chance to meet her then. Still, I don't regret it because I probably wouldn't have read her novels otherwise and, basically, they have been good, if not outstanding. My time with them has not been wasted.

Still, her novels have often given me the feeling of retreading old ground. Her mysteries are intriguing enough but her range sometimes seems limited. Her protagonists are always young women in their 20's or 30's who are writers/artists/teachers. The setting is always New England, usually with some connection to Manhattan. And, in her first four novels, the image of water was ever-present, if unexplained.

When I started this novel, it appeared to be breaking new ground. Yes, the mystery, protagonist and setting were all there but the water had all but disappeared and Shakespeare had appeared. The historical mystery of who was the "Dark Lady" was set to be answered with the appearance of some sonnets by a long-dead woman from the confines of an Italian villa, where much of the novel takes place after its beginnings in Manhattan. As a Bardoloter and reader wanting the best for Ms. Goodman, I had high hopes. Perhaps that's why I was disappointed.

Granted, I was let down somewhat by the fact that, despite initial appearances, she really didn't stray to far from her comfort zone. She doesn't really seem to be able to get in the head of a character who isn't much like herself. But that doesn't necessarily have to be a big problem if the character reacts realistically within the mystery. In the past, that hasn't been a problem with Ms. Goodman's work but here it is. In particular, we have a woman with no real penchant for bravery being within shouting distance of two murders and hiding possible evidence and yet, she repeatedly puts herself in potentially dangerous situations without a thought. And throwaway lines along the lines of, "She didn't know why she was doing this..." don't make believable characterization.

It's too bad because there are many pleasures to be had in this book. Both the mysteries she investigates--Shakespeare's Dark Lady and the murderer on the loose--are handled well. Unfortunately, the plot seems to drive the characters here more than the other way around this time out which makes for a lesser experience than her past books.

3 out of 5 stars "This house is stained with the blood of innocence.".......2007-07-19

Carol Goodman's "The Sonnet Lover" is a literary thriller about lost manuscripts that are valuable enough to serve as a motive for murder. Thirty-nine year old Professor Rose Asher teaches comparative literature at Hudson College in New York. Her handsome and brilliant young student, Robin Weiss, has made a film that was shot in La Civetta, a Tuscan estate worth nearly a billion dollars. Its eccentric and flamboyant owner, Cyril Graham, has promised to bequeath his property to Hudson College to become a center for the performing arts.

Rose has bittersweet memories of her own stay in La Civetta when, as a nineteen-year old student, she had a passionate affair with her married professor, Bruno Brunelli. The relationship ended abruptly, Rose went on to pursue her successful academic career (she is a specialist in the Renaissance sonnet), and she now has another man in her life, college president Mark Adams. Suddenly, Robin's promising life ends when he falls off a balcony to his death. Was it murder, suicide, or a tragic accident? To find out, Rose revisits La Civetta along with Mark Adams, Gene Silverman (the head of the film department), and Leo Balthasar, a Hollywood producer who is planning to making a feature based on Shakespeare's sonnets. Says Leo, "Picture 'Shakespeare in love,' only steamier."

The book's premise is that in the sixteenth century, Shakespeare may have traveled to Italy to be with his lover, a poet named Ginevra de Laura, and perhaps his mysterious "Dark Lady." Ginevra's poems were lost and the skeptical Professor Asher insists there is no proof that Shakespeare ever set foot in Italy. "The Sonnet Lover" capitalizes on the popularity of historical mysteries featuring priceless documents and long-buried secrets. Goodman's well-researched novel is filled with lovely poetry, an exotic Italian setting, and intriguing speculation about Shakespeare's life. Professor Asher plays amateur sleuth as she pursues clues that may help her find Ginevra's poems. In addition, Rose rekindles her romance with Brunelli; although he is still married, Bruno claims to be separated from his aggressive wife, Claudia. He is fiercely protective of his son, Orlando, a gloomy young man who knew Robin Weiss well and bore a grudge against him.

Although Goodman is an intelligent and literate writer, "The Sonnet Lover" is not entirely successful. As the book progresses, its pace slows down considerably and the dialogue becomes increasingly stilted; there is a great deal of tedious exposition and too little action. By the time Rose learns the identity of the murderer and the numerous story lines are at last unraveled, some readers will have lost interest in the heavy-handed plot machinations. Although Goodman deserves credit for an ambitious effort, "The Sonnet Lover" ultimately falls short because of its overly cluttered and poorly constructed plot and its shallow characterizations.

4 out of 5 stars Midsummer in Florence.......2007-07-17

The Sonnet Lover is the latest in Carol Goodman's novels centering upon female teachers who become deeply embroiled in mysteries generated by the activities of their students. This one takes college Renaissance Literature professor Rose Asher to Florence, where she revisits the romantic but menacing villa where 20 years ago she fell hopelessly in love with one of her own professors, unfortunately married. Now it appears that her former lover's son may be a murderer, and Rose's own life is endangered by her attempt to find some hitherto undiscovered sonnets, perhaps written by Shakespeare's own inammorata. Beautifully written, Sonnet Lover invokes a Midsummer Night's Dream atmosphere in the grounds of the villa, but it is magic not innocent but imbued with evil intrigue. Though this ambience works very well, the plot is probably Goodman's weakest, slow and plodding, and while enjoyable, this book does not measure up to her previous works for that reason.

This is the first Carol Goodman book I have read but it certainly won't be the last! Her imagery transported me back to Italy where I lost my heart.I not only felt I was there but was on the quest with Rose. I did not want the book to end and it left me wanting to know more about Shakespeare's era. I have actually done research since. That is the mark of a great book to me. Thank-you, Carol Goodman and many many more to come, I hope!

Snakebite Sonnet begins with the unbridled attraction 10-year-old Nicky Wertheim feels toward 19-year-old Julia Turrell. So begins a long on-again-off-again relationship based mostly on lust. Throughout the novel, from Nicky's childhood in New Jersey to college life at Cornell and then on to the life of an East Village punk, Julia appears and reappears to Nicky, leading to a series of encounters that bring bliss and misery in equal measures to both participants. Max Phillips' razor-sharp satirical instincts give this first novel an edge that many coming-of-age efforts lack.

It boggles the mind (well, my mind) that this book is out of print while so much lousy writing and so many trite stories clutter the shelves. This man can write. And the story is alive and real and touching and funny and sexy and moving. Won't add another plot summary here -- just had to say this is one of the best things I happened to pick up all year, and I did so only because of the quote ads on the back of his recent book, The Artist's Wife. Snakebite Sonnet won't disappoint. Trot over to your local library and find a copy.

4 out of 5 stars An evocative first novel about love and lust, mostly lust.......1998-05-28

Nicky Wertheim is 10 years old in Silver Crest, N.J., when he first sees a blond 19-year-old goddess named Julia and is smitten with a crush that endures beyond the summer. "Do you have a boyfriend?" he asks her. "Several. Do you want to be my boyfriend? "Yes." "Well, maybe later," she says. After Julia leaves town, Nicky is unable to shake the key event of that fateful summer - and of his life: While hiking, Julia is bitten by a snake; Nicky rushes to make the proper knife incision and suck out the poison. The snake turns out to be harmless, but Nicky's swallowed "mouthful of girl blood" promises to haunt him forever: "I had a little of Julia's blood in me now, and with luck that bit of Julia would stay with me forever."

As Nick grows to adulthood and beyond, he holds out hope that Julia will eventually be his. But *maybe later* moves further and further away: "I'd chosen as my heart's desire the queen of the inaccessible," he says. Unaware of her continuing hold on Nick's heart, Julia flits in and out of the rest of Max Phillips's accomplished debut novel, which strings us along - through three decades! - in the hopes that she and Nick (the book's narrator) will finally consummate their sporadically torrid relationship. And even though "Snakebite Sonnet" begins to fade about halfway through, we never stop caring about these characters, or about Nick's struggle to reconcile each new romantic liaison with the unfulfilled promise of Julia's blood.

"Snakebite Sonnet" is marvelous in tracing the young Nick's immature thoughts and feelings. Phillips perfectly captures the appealingly peculiar Wertheim family, headed by eccentric pre-hippie parents who insist Nicky and his twin sister Del call them by their first names (instead of their "societal roles"). "I called our folks Mom and Dad, against their wishes, because I loved them and wanted them to act like parents," he tells us. "Del called them Saul and Suzanne because she hated them and had given up." Describing his parents' going about the house ! nearly nude, and his experimental necking with his sister, Nicky notes: "I didn't know what the routine was in other families, but I figured it wasn't like this." There's also a ton of (non-familial) sex in "Snakebite Sonnet," to the extent that it seems a bit out of proportion to the rest of Nick's life. On the other hand, Phillips writes a great sex scene, so we don't mind that this story about thwarted passion is so erotically charged. The novel is frequently very funny, as when Nick and a girlfriend tearfully break up: "After that, we went through a phase where we dated all the time, and then a phase where we went to bed occasionally and tried to see ourselves as friends, and finally a phase where she married a forty-two-year-old public relations consultant."

After a while - about the point when Nick turns 23 and moves to Manhattan's East Village, working/killing time as a bike messenger - the humor, and everything else, turns a bit desperate. As a full-fledged adult, Nick isn't nearly as fun to spend time with. And he's not all that familiar anymore. Unfortunately, many decades-spanning chronicles of lives fall victim to the same tendencies: At some point the protagonist stops seeming charmingly eccentric and countercultural and begins to come off as antisocial, unstable and inconsistent. What was precocious becomes merely precious. Sometimes the inconsistencies make it tough to get a handle on Nick. "What do you believe in?" a girlfriend asks him at age 21. "Passion," he responds. But two years later, participating in an avant-garde art show, he agrees to lie in a corner "completely mummified in masking tape." A collaborator says, "It's *got* to be you, Nick. No one else is passive enough." Which is it? Passion or passivity?

Meanwhile, in her every-so-often appearances, each of which discombobulates Nick, Julia loses all her mystery and most of her appeal. "She's grown genuinely nasty," one woman tells him. Julia's flaws and quirks start seeming pathological; her drinking and behavior turn ugly, ! and less and less forgivable. In the grip of permanent obsession, Nick too becomes less sympathetic, particularly in the area of romance. He says of one girlfriend: "I'd learned to experience desire as hatred. . . . I'd come to view sex as a long-deferred retribution for life's teasing. . . . I was rough, and loved to inflict pleasure, to bite and slap and wrench her from one posture to another. . . . The real me . . . was spelled out in bruises and toothmarks." After that disturbing relationship ends, with relief on our parts, Nick's life slows to a near stop. "I turned thirty, then thirty-one." Phillips even acknowledges the difficulty of moving a story along against a protagonist's inertia. "Now, a story, as I understand it, is a matter of What Does Our Hero Do Next?" he writes. "The difficulty in telling the story of a cement-assed depressive like me is that our hero does *nothing* next, and does it over and over."

Nick finally forces himself to come to terms with his elusive goddess, now plump and heading toward middle age but still unheedingly hovering over his every move. "She's poisoning everything," he cries out to an old friend. "She's hurt me so much! I don't care if she didn't mean to, I don't care if I sat up and begged for it! I'm choking on this backlog of things I haven't said." The inevitable final, air-clearing meeting is worth waiting for, and we find ourselves liking Nick and Julia a little again. And it turns out that, despite the flaws of "Snakebite Sonnet," it has kept us entertained and focused all the way to the end.

Knowing nothing about this book,I picked it up and read the first page. It is love novel. It's hard not to laugh. This is a novel that should recieve serious attention. Well done Mr Phillips, keep writing and I'll keep reading.

Phillips is a poet? I believe it. His prose is so sensual and original and sharp and clear it's almost tangible; his descriptions of women's bodies in particular are brilliantly tactile, detailed to the max (ha ha), which seemed absolutely right for his obsessive narrator to do. Each character is 3-D and totally alive; the dialogue is crackling, witty, sophisticated, urban. Loved the parents, Del, the Dutch girlfriend, the black girlfriend. Wow. I couldn't put this book down, stayed up way too late finishing it. Maybe that's why the ending felt a tad anticlimactic and too long in coming... I was disappointed, because this guy can really write.

Max Phillips writes beautifully. He knows how to describe feelings, sights, and smells so that the reader is right there with him. He will take you on a ride of obsession with a crazy woman. But at times you might feel like: why is he still harboring on this girl? She's unlikeable. She's inconsiderate, an alcoholic, and unreliable. She's a flirt, but she's ma

In this darkly satirical novel, a Columbia University English professor's life is turned upside down when it starts to follow the plot of Shakespeare's sonnets.

A quick and fun novel. William Marlowe is a professor of Shakespeare at Columbia University, with a wife named Anne and a couple of kids. While immersed in a seminar on the sonnets, he meets a Dark Lady and a handsome and pale young man. Hijinks follow in New York City. Readers of Shakespeare will recognize the parallels with Shakespeare's own life. Professor Marlowe unselfconsciously, in both senses, follows the trajectory of the narrative of the sonnets. It is a fun read, perhaps a bit thin and brief, but well-written.

I enjoyed reading this book and was constantly nodding my head in agreement about how awful teaching and academia can be.

Will Marlow was a sympathetic character who seemed to be making all the wrong choices, dictated by the programmatic nature of Davis' plot, which follows the "plot" of Shakespeare's sonnets to an exacting degree, and sometimes spins out of control. You groan at some of the references, such as the "second-best bed," but just as often you chuckle at Davis' dilemma and the kooky ways he comes up with to match his academia plot with the Elizabethan one. Our previous reviewer is also correct about the sex scenes which for once are genuinely sexy, sharply observed, well done. Hooray for Marlow, Davis, and disgrace!

This is a comedy of manners, an academic novel, and a spoof on a variety of modernisms. Despite the fact that the Editorial Review above contains what are nearly plot spoilers, there were plenty of surprises, puzzles, sly and enjoyable literary references and plays on words - plus dozens of opportunities for outright guffawing. This is a very, very funny book.

I picked up "The Sonnets" hoping to not need to dutifully flip through Shakespeare's 154 sonnets (plus "A Lover's Complaint") as I went, since - in contrast to the novel's clever and passionate - but comically self-deprecating narrator - I have neither read nor "taught the Bard so long that his thoughts had become mine." I hoped to read one book, not two. I think it went okay. You don't need to have Shakespeare alongside this novel in order to enjoy the goings-on, be appalled at times, delighted at others - and to laugh a lot.

Protagonist Will Marlowe is a readily recognizable fiftyish English professor. He's a smart world-wise guy, a dyed-in-the-wool left-winger with an impeccable intellect, and a freight of desires. He is by turns vexed and thrilled by his wife, his kids, his dull or clever and beautiful students, aspects of work, domestic life, sexuality, and urbanity. He is seducible and cynical at once: he falls for a thing, an idea, a person - but watches himself - carefully. He checks his back.

He has got the soul of the poet combined with a reporter's eye for detail. He is most definitely of this world. Academic life engages him at times, but often gets on his nerves. A colleague has received a MacArthur grant, an endowed chair, "so successfully had he pulled the New Zealand wool over the eyes of the administration," and it stings. Marlowe sniffs, " Meanwhile I remained unacknowledged, occupying a small oak and leather chair that had no name other than that of its manufacturer - the Acme Furniture Company of New Bedford, Massachusetts. I like to think of myself as the Acme Furniture Professor of Shakespearean Studies."

Whether it's a bad dinner guest, scenes of discovery and betrayal, modern manners, urban life, the contents of gourmet food shops, fabulous scenes of love and varieties of endearingly realistic sexual encounters (originally, convincingly, unegomanically and successfully described), an obnoxious colleague, post-modern hijinks and linguistic acrobatics - or a quirky and funny approach to some psychoanalytic themes - all are handled well by Davis.

His protagonist screws things up in ways that are absurd, sometimes reference back to Shakespeare's sonnets, often deeply affecting - and are often laugh-out-loud funny.

An academic novel that is a lot of fun.
