Book Description

Financial systems are crucial to the allocation of resources in a modern economy. They channel household savings to the corporate sector and allocate investment funds among firms; they allow intertemporal smoothing of consumption by households and expenditures by firms; and they enable households and firms to share risks. These functions are common to the financial systems of most developed economies. Yet the form of these financial systems varies widely. In the United States and the United Kingdom competitive markets dominate the financial landscape, whereas in France, Germany, and Japan banks have traditionally played the most important role.

Why do different countries have such different financial systems? Is one system better than all the others? Do different systems merely represent alternative ways of satisfying similar needs? Is the current trend toward market-based systems desirable?

Franklin Allen and Douglas Gale argue that the view that market-based systems are best is simplistic. A more nuanced approach is necessary. For example, financial markets may be bad for risk sharing; competition in banking may be inefficient; financial crises can be good as well as bad; and separation of ownership and control can be optimal. Financial institutions are not simply veils, disguising the allocation mechanism without affecting it, but are crucial to overcoming market imperfections. An optimal financial system relies on both financial markets and financial intermediaries.

I suspect any researchers working on a project with such catchy words as "comparing" or "comparative" do theory for theory's sake: they slobber over theory without seriously looking at real issues in the real world. This book, by two scholars from the ivory tower, is clearly an example of this empty endeavor. It is just a collection of incoherent graffiti. I am not claiming that their arguments are illogical. Rather, I am just saying I don't understand for what and for whom these two puerile gangs are doing this sort of research.

In a nutshell, any serious intellectuals (I don't care about pedants like the authors) should skip a frivolous book like this. Do not be deceived by praises from their playmates.

            Book Description

Modeling Legal Argument provides a comprehensive treatment of case-based reasoning and a detailed description of a computer program called Hypo, that models the way attorneys argue with cases, real and hypothetical. The program offers significant advantages over "keyword" case retrieval systems in the legal field and demonstrates how to design expert systems that assist the user by presenting reasonable alternative answers on all sides of an issue and by citing case examples to explain their advice.

Hypo analyzes problem situations dealing with trade secrets disputes, retrieves relevant legal cases from its database and fashions them into reasonable legal arguments about who should win. The arguments demonstrate the program's ability to reason symbolically with past cases, to draw factual analogies between cases, to cite them in arguments, to distinguish them, and to pose counter-examples and hypotheticals based on past cases.

Modeling Legal Argument discusses the law as a paradigm of case-based argument, introduces Hypo and its adversarial reasoning process, provides an overview of the Hypo program, and gives extended examples of the model's reasoning capabilities. It describes the case knowledge base, a dimensional index, basic mechanisms of case-based reasoning, and offers a theory of case-based argument in Hypo. Ashley evaluates Hypo's performance and takes up adversarial case-based reasoning beyond the law and extensions of the Hypo model.

Kevin D. Ashley is a Research Scientist at the Learning Research an Development Center and Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Pittsburgh. Modeling Legal Argument is included in the Artificial Intelligence and Legal Reasoning series, edited by L. Thorne McCarty and Edwina L. Rissland.

                    Book Description

This primer seeks to provide an introduction to the science of equilibrium electrochemistry; specifically it addresses the topics of electrode potentials and their applications. It builds on a knowledge of elementary thermodynamics giving the reader an appreciation of the origin of electrode potentials and shows how these are used to deduce a wealth of chemically important information and data such as equilibrium constants, the free energy, enthalpy and entrophy changes of chemical reactions, activity coefficients, the selective sensing of ions. The emphasis throughout is on understanding the foundations of the subject and how it may be used to study problems of chemical interest. The Primer is directed towards students in the early years of their university courses in chemistry and allied subjects; accordingly, the mathematical aspects of the subject have been minimized as far as is consistent with clarity.

                              Description:
Physico-chemical characteristics of distillery effluent samples have been determined. The water quality parameters (WQPs) measured are colour, pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride, total hardness (THA), calcium, iron, bio-chemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Almost all the values of WQPs of the distillery effluents have been found to be very high and well above the permissible limit suggested by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Electrocoagulation (EC) technique is employed to treat the distillery effluents. Removal efficiency of WQPs is compared by adopting EC technique with and without the addition of indigenously prepared activated areca nut [botanical name: Areca catechu; kotta pakku, in (vernacular)] carbon (AAC). About 99% of turbidity has been removed in both the cases. The experimental results also revealed that the WQPs like EC, TDS, etc. of the effluents could be reduced. Loss of weight of sacrificial electrode (anode) is also ascertained. EC with AAC is found to be more effective than EC without AAC.

                                Book Description

Volume 9 of group IV consideres and describes the electrochemical processes at the boundaries of electrodes and electrolytes. All related phenomena require a precise knowledge of the involved systems. The volume thus presents firstly a thorough overview on the field of electrochemistry and secondly collects all relevant data of electrochemical systems as reported up to now.

Phenomena and data are considered and reported from the constitutive viewpoints of electrochemistry, which also form the five chapters of the subvolume A: electrode potentials - cell voltages - electrode potentials of zero charge - free enthalpy of adsorption - exchange current densities. Each chapter introduces to the particular subject matter and lists the data in concise tables, arranged, as far as possible, according to the examined values.

                                    Description:
The combined effects of pH, thiocyanate ion and deposition potential in the characteristics of thin mercury film electrodes plated on glassy carbon surfaces are evaluated. Charges of deposited mercury are used as an experimental parameter for the estimation of the effectiveness of the mercury deposition procedure. The sensitivity of the anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) method for the determination of lead at in situ and at ex situ formed thin mercury films are also examined. It was concluded that, in acidic solutions (pH 2.5-5.7) and fairly negative deposition potentials, e.g. -1.3 to -1.5V, thiocyanate ion promotes the formation of the mercury film, in respect both to the amount of deposited mercury and to the mercury deposition rate. Also, the mercury coatings produced in thiocyanate solutions are more homogeneous, as depicted by microscopic examinations. In the presence of thiocyanate there is no obvious advantage of using high concentrations of mercury and/or high deposition times for the in situ and ex situ preparation of the mercury film electrodes. The optimised thin mercury film electrode ex situ prepared in a 5.0mM thiocyanate solution of pH 3.4 was successfully applied to the ASV determination of lead and copper in acidified seawater (pH 2). The limit of detection (3@s) was 6x10^-^1^1M for lead and 2x10^-^1^0M for copper for a deposition time of 5min. Relative standard deviations (R.S.D.s) of <1.2% were obtained for determinations at the nanomolar of concentration level.

                                                Book Description

This volume includes articles on the mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of various wave phenomena. For many years Waves 2003 and its five prior conferences have been an important forum for discussions on wave propagation. The topic is equally important for fundamental sciences, engineering, mathematics and, in particular, for industrial applications. Areas of specific interest are acoustics, electromagnetics, elasticity and related inverse and optimization problems. This book gives an extensive overview of recent developments in a very active field of scientific computing.

I hope this guy is in disguise, I thought to myself as I stared at him. He was wearing a purple shirt, green pants, orange socks and blue tennis shoes. He was also wearing a red ball cap with a chicken feather sticking out the top. A man dressed like that had to be in disguise. He may have been in disguise, but certainly not undercover. He was brighter than a neon sign. Even by 1970

2 out of 5 stars The Title is the Best Part.......2006-09-08

I bought this book for the title I must admit. Once I began to read it, I noticed that the sentences seemed much longer than most of the books I read and there was lots of punctuation. That lead me to look up the publisher, iUninverse. From that, I realized this was a self published book.

I must admit I am reviewing a book I only got half way through. I tried desperately to complete the book, but I just couldn't. Mr. Paxton probably wrote a better book than I could have written, but it just wasn't good. It almost read like a school paper.

The story is set in the 1970's in Arkansas. A guy, "Slick", thinks he is in love with a waitress who works in the college pizza shop. He wants to find out about her (is she married? Does she have a boyfriend?), so he hires two local detectives to find that out for him. Why he would not just ask her the questions himself, I am not sure.

The detectives are two very strange and useless characters and have lots of similar friends that tag along through the book. Slick ends up spending days with this motley crew, including sleeping on the floor of the detectives' office. They have lots of uninteresting "misadventures", including seeing the not dead, but hiding out, Elvis. From reading the back cover, I know that they eventually would have met Bill Clinton.

I think the book definitely is written from a man's point of view and would possibly appeal to men more than women. I liked the title and the cover. They were the best part.
