Book Description
An action-driven approach to assessing, creating, and protecting value
"The timing for publication of Eleanor Bloxham's Economic Value Management is providential. We are assailed by the reality that the board of directors of leading companies have approved, no, have directed, accounting practices that inflate the reported earnings but that lack economic substance. Audit firms in search of personal wealth have been selling `earnings' from their consulting division to their full client list. This volume is uniquely couched to restore integrity to the financial understanding of corporate functioning. If you want-and you should-to start getting American business back on the right track, you should read this book."-Robert A. G. Monks, Publisher of www.ragm.com and several books about corporate governance
"Educated investors are essential to successfully functioning capital markets. At this critical time in our financial history, restoring the confidence in our financial system lost over the past year will depend upon financial advisors and investors truly understanding the companies they invest in. As Economic Value Management shows, being educated means more than understanding the unique language of the stock market, it is more than reading a prospectus or an annual report, it is more than listening to an analyst's opinions. Being educated requires a genuine understanding of the value of a company."- Mary L. Schapiro, Vice Chairman, President, Regulatory Policy and Oversight, NASD (National Association of Securities Dealers)
"Economic Value Management would have limited much of the economic turmoil we have experienced in the last eighteen months. It is the way a company should be managed."- John McCoy, Chairman of Battelle Memorial Institute, retired Chairman and CEO of Bank One Corporation
"Nothing could be more appropriate and needed at this time in history than understanding how decisions affect corporate economic value. Eleanor Bloxham's exploration of this issue is clear, easy to follow, and thorough in its breadth. Had corporate officers used economic value management techniques throughout their organizations and investors focused on such issues, there would have been much greater rationality in the stock market with much less eventual bloodletting. Indeed, in the aftermath of recent disclosures, the focus on Economic Value Management metrics should increase substantially, and this book provides a solid foundation for understanding such an approach."-Joseph A. Alutto, Dean and John W. Berry Sr., Chair in Business, Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University
Customer Reviews:
This Book is a Must Read to Understand Economic Profit.......2003-07-06
When practitioners, who have actually rolled up their sleeves and implemented, write a book, it is usually a good read. In Eleanor Bloxham's case, this is a great read.
There is so much confusion about what operational and strategic levers an organization should push or pull to create rather than destroy shareholder wealth. Most articles slip into gross platitudes and sloganeering and sidestep the "how to." Bloxham's book dives in but explains adnmittedly complex interelationships in a way you can understand them. She does a fine job integrating the component tools, like the balanced scorecard and activity based costing, into economic value management.
Some day boards of directors may find this to be the standard book for assisting their shareholders make, not lose, money.
Cutting Through the Confusion about Performance Metrics.......2003-04-01
Corporate senior executives are subjected to pressure for performance from many constituents - shareholders, customers, employees, governmental and regulatory authorities, rating agencies, board members, and securities analysts. And, since these are by definition high achieving individuals, some of the greatest pressure is from within. The existence of many constituents, many with conflicting objectives, often makes it very difficult for CEO's, CFO's and board members to focus on key performance goals and metrics. Over the course of my 34 year career as a corporate banker, I've seen many confused executives, pressured for EPS growth, revenue growth, ROE, but not necessarily understanding the long run impact of any or all of these performance metrics.
Ms. Bloxham has produced a superb book that takes a "holistic" view of the process of identifying performance criteria for senior executives, and not just for those in the private sector. She and I share common views about the benefits of economic value added metrics, but she has gone well beyond this to address many of the conflicts for performance faced by executives. She provides an excellent framework for establishing a set of logical goals and performance metrics for managing complex businesses and non-profit organizations.
essential, but enjoyable reading for excecutives.......2003-02-10
A friend of mine recommended this book to be, but when I first saw the title of the book I wasn't sure what it was going to
be about. It seemed a bit intimidating. However, the book is very easy to read, has incredible insights and having read it, I now can certainly understand why the book was named a late addition candidate to "ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS of 2002" and a CEO "RECOMMENDED READ" by CEO refresher, an independent editorial board recognized by the Harvard Business School and
the Wall Street Journal. I think it is one of the best books on business I've ever read.
I'm on my second reading of this book and as I go through it I'm revising my business unit's plans for the coming fiscal year. As Bloxham points out, change is a difficult process, but worth it, so I'm sure I'll be referring to this book for years to come.

This book is a winner! It emphasizes stewardship of resources, and explains in detail with excellent examples, how to implement a new way of thinking about responsibility. The book is an enjoyable read and packed with suggestions for action.

Description:
The need for economic analysis for the design and implementation of efficient water resources management policies is well documented in the economics literature. This need is also emphasised in the European Union's recent Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC), and is relevant to the objectives of Euro-limpacs, an EU funded project which inter alia, aims to provide a decision-support system for valuing the effects of future global change on Europe's freshwater ecosystems. The purpose of this paper is to define the role of economic valuation techniques in assisting in the design of efficient, equitable and sustainable policies for water resources management in the face of environmental problems such as pollution, intensive land use in agriculture and climate change. The paper begins with a discussion of the conceptual economic framework that can be used to inform water policy-making. An inventory of the available economic valuation methods is presented and the scope and suitability of each for studying various aspects of water resources are critically discussed. Recent studies that apply these methods to water resources are reviewed. Finally, an application of one of the economic valuation methods, namely the contingent valuation method, is presented using a case study of the Cheimaditida wetland in Greece.

Book Description
Laminar Flow and Convective Transport Processes: Scaling Principles and Asymptotic Analysis presents analytic methods for the solution of fluid mechanics and convective transport processes, all in the laminar flow regime. This book brings together the results of almost 30 years of research on the use of nondimensionalization, scaling principles, and asymptotic analysis into a comprehensive form suitable for presentation in a core graduate-level course on fluid mechanics and the convective transport of heat. A considerable amount of material on viscous-dominated flows is covered.
A unique feature of this book is its emphasis on scaling principles and the use of asymptotic methods, both as a means of solution and as a basis for qualitative understanding of the correlations that exist between independent and dependent dimensionless parameters in transport processes. Laminar Flow and Convective Transport Processes is suitable for use as a textbook for graduate courses in fluid mechanics and transport phenomena and also as a reference for researchers in the field.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent research and reference text........2003-08-04
Gary Leal is best known for his work on free surface flows of drops and as such this book shows some of techniques used to solve for such flows although this is in the minority. Overall this book is heavily research oriented with meticulously worked solutions for trasnport processes in fluid dynamics. The book covers asymptotic approximations, creeping flows and some heat transfer as well as some slender body theory. It comprises many, once, research problems in the fluid dynamics field, each of them worked out in detail. It requires good mathematical skill and knowledge as well as a good physical understanding. If you possess these two prerequisites the book is an excellent source of understanding in analytical fluid dynamics. There is much explanantion of important concepts and the derivation of the relevant equations is well constructed. Unfortunately the book is also quite expensive but has provided me with a useful reference in my current research as well as offering interesting examples of various analytical techniques used in fluid dynamics research.
An excellent research and reference text.
For well-prepared students and researchers..........2001-12-24
I've read the book - not the entire content -, it's really a good book. Every line needs deep understanding in physics and math. I want to recommend this book for students and researchers who have deep and strong foundation on math and fluid mechanics. But, I don't think this book is an adequate textbook for just one sememster coursework. It's really difficult!

Exploring a Natural Wonder.......2002-03-27
Renowned author and illustrator Wendell Minor takes readers on an extraordinary journey in the picture book GRAND CANYON. Minor, who has graced book covers with his art for more than twenty-five years, is also one of the most revered children's book illustrators around. He's done collaborations with Newbery Award-winning author Jean Craighead George, including EVERGLADES, ARCTIC SON, and the soon-to-be-published CLIFFHANGER, as well as critically acclaimed books with Eve Bunting, Anne Turner, and Charlotte Zolotow. Now, he tells of his experiences in one of America's most celebrated natural treasures, with lyrical text and stunning watercolors. For twelve days he spent time on the South Rim of the canyon, sketching and painting the huge rocks, the dramatic skies, and the abundant wildlife in the area. The colors are rich and intense, yet at the same time peaceful, perfectly complementing the words. You feel as if you're right there, standing over the canyon with space all around you. This is an excellent introduction for kids to a magnificent place, and even if, like me, you've never visited the Grand Canyon, you'll feel as if you were taking the journey and living the experience, too.
Looking Carefully.......2000-06-09
This is a thoughtful look at the wonders of the Grand Canyon as seen by a noted American illustrator who took his time to look carefully at and sketch some of that space. The gorgeous watercolors painted from his sketches convey the beauty and the color of the Grand Canyon and the accompanying text from his journal help put the images into perspective. Minor makes the spaces come alive.

One must not think of a mountain range as a line of peaks standing on a plain, but as a broad platform many miles wide from which mountains have been carved by the waters. One must conceive, too, that this plateau is cut by gulches and canyons in many directions and that beautiful valleys are scattered about at different altitudes. The first series of canyons we are about to explore constitutes a river channel through such a range of mountains.

Fancy, fancy, fancy.......2005-10-07
This book's photographs are gorgeous--though there's not enough of them--of snow covered mesas, sacred datura, Bryce Canyon (which isn't really on the Colorado at all), streambeds, waterfalls, canyon walls, cactus, clouds, and shadows.
The introduction is by conservationist David Brower, and is a little pretentious, but most of the text is straight from explorer John Wesley Powell's own account of his trips in the late-1800s, and the photos do a great job of making that text seem especially readable.
There are A TON of books about the Colorado River and the Colorado Plateau...and this...this is another one of them. It's a good one though, and worth considering--whether you're obsessed with reading every single book on the subject, or whether you'd just like one nice one to leave out on your coffee table.
Contents are superb, but spoiled by bad organization........1999-02-18
As prior reviews state, the text is well-selected from Powell's journal, and the photographs are superb. But how can the author publish the journal of an explorer without a map keyed to the dates of journal entries? The photographs are superb, but again, not keyed to a map, or even associated with the text. The identifying data for each photo is listed in the front of the book, but is not given on, or near the photograph. A potentially superb book, but, because of these defects and faults, one that is maddening to read.

Customer Reviews:
Quite good introduction.......2006-07-18
A singular description of "Earth Time" would not be helpful, as the book is really two in one. The first half is a history of the development of the (relative) geologic time scale, set largely in 19th century England. The second half is a more technical discussion of the stratigraphy of the Grand Canyon, with the book closing on a summary of radiometric dating techniques. The organization of the work is interesting; its first half covers the time scale from the Holocene back to the Precambrian, while the second half starts from the Precambrian and works its way forward.
There is a lot in this book to like, as the author wanders through the various personalities and historical set pieces that gave us the modern geologic time scale. Palmer's prose is light on tech and easy to read, and especially in the book's second half, he has a "just the facts" approach that makes it the strongest part of the book. One paragraph biographies of key individuals are sprinkled throughout the text; I found these distracting at first, but in retrospect felt they are probably more useful than a cumbersome appendix the reader would have to flip back and forth from.
The book isn't perfect, though; for instance, in the first half, the Holocene and Precambrian feel glossed over, while in the second half more attention is given to radiometric dating than equally (and perhaps more) effective biostratigraphic dating. A chapter on the "Missing Mesozoic" strata of the Grand Canyon could have gone into a little more detail about the events that caused this hiatus. These are all minor quibbles, though.
On the whole, I'd definitely recommend this book for those interested in the "meat and potatoes" of how the geologic time scale was developed; as an historical geology geek, I greatly enjoyed it.
