Customer Reviews:
Good Intro to Financial Accounting but many Drawbacks.......2004-12-10
The book "Financial Accounting" gives a very good overview of the technique of financial accounting, but falls short on the analysis port.
The good: The book starts with the basics and builds up on the covered material. I did like the writing style and the book is easy to read. The basic concepts (are there really concepts in financial accounting?) are carefully introduced step by step, illustrated with simple examples and
backed up by extracts from real financial reports. Every chapter contains one or more mid-chapter and end-of-chapter summary problems (with answers) and an extensive set of exercises for each chapter.
The bad: There are several aspects of this text I didn't like too much. Although the book covers the basics, it is often kept too simple. While this is ideal for the first learning experience, a lot of real life problems are left uncovered. You will get an overview, but your far from being an accountant after the lecture of this book.
The financial statements presented in the book do not follow a common pattern. There are a gazillion different cash flow examples and none look alike (ok, maybe to an accountant, but certainly not to me). Following the style and purpose of the book, more care should have been taken in structuring the statements.
While I liked the extensive set of exercises, I was annoyed that no solutions are provided. A solution manual is available to teachers, but this contains a lot of errors.
The section on analyzing financial reports is way too brief and should probably omitted completely. There are better texts covering this issue in depth.
And the ugly: This thing is way too expensive. The binding is rather cheap, my copy started to fall apart after 2 month (or did I just have to learn harder than the average Joe?).
The CD provided with the book is neither bad nor good. Just useless. Excel files with the data for all exercises would have been far better than the provided material.
Overall, the book gives a good introduction to financial accounting, but there are too many issues to make it a really recommendable choice.
Worst textbook I've used.........2004-03-30
This textbook is really bad. Not very informative at all comparing it to other financial accounting books. It gives very broad descriptions and definitions that make it feel more like a grammar school book than a college-level. I was very unhappy that my professor assigned my class with this book. If you do not need to buy it, please don't, it's horrible.
A worthless text book..........2004-02-20
I purchased this book because its the prescribe text book. The treatment of the content is average. What annoys me is there are little or no answers to the exercises. I later learnt that Prentice Hall supplies the solution manual to the instructors, but they dont make it available to students....huh??
The authors come out with editions every year. I compared the 4th and 5th edition. Very little content changed, but they have smartly changed few numbers here and there in the exercises, forcing students to buy their latest edition.
In short...this book is just a sucking machine....Worthless for $125. I dont know if the instructors get a big cut in prescribing this worthless text book...
Extremely Frusterating.......2004-02-11
I bought this book to better understand Financial Accounting. This book is loaded with errors. The end of chapter problems do not balance correctly. I had a CPA do the same problems, and he came up with the exact same totals as me!
Another annoying thing to point out is that the book only gives answers to a small select random of problems. Of course they are the easier ones. I would love to get answers/explanations on the incorrect ones. I have written emails, and none have been responded. I am not suprised...

Book Description
Supply Chain for Liquids: Out of the Box Approaches to Liquid Logistics provides a thorough analysis of liquid logistics, a crucial but often overlooked business issue. It covers a broad range of topics including the business, operational, and technical aspects of the Supply Chain for Liquidsâ model, allowing readers to leverage the inherent properties of liquids toward business success. This volume details an approach that is justified based on both business and social/environmental value, offering a groundbreaking "how-to" guide for revolutionizing logistical operations and increasing competitive advantage. It challenges traditional thinking, enabling businesses to identify new ways to maximize efficiency and profit.
Customer Reviews:
A Whole World of Supply Chain Opportunity I Didn't Know Was There.......2005-11-22
I was sceptical when I first noticed this book because I don't consider liquids an important part of the supply chain in our company. This book is a real eye-opener! First Klatch peels back the covers that are "hiding" liquids in so many businesses like ours, and then goes on to show how much more effectively we can handle these products than what we are doing now.
I really liked the "real world" approach in the book. Rather than throwing some theoretical method out there, it shows how we can improve to different levels in our handling of the liquid supply chain, we can go as far as we want at any particular time using the methods described in the book.
Finally, the book understands that there is a real human reader on the other end and uses a lot of examples and stories from business, science, and history to make its point. I'll never think of "silo thinking" the same way again!

A Good Introduction to Farming.......2007-04-25
I pastor a church in a rural area, so I felt that it was in my best interests to learn a little bit about the chosen profession of some of my parishioners.
I was surprised by how interesting this book was and how practical and wise the counsel is 160 years after it was first written. The author begins with a discussion of the different kinds of soils in North America (rocky, clay, alluvial, light, dark, etc). He talks about how spreading manure or lime or charcoal or crushed bones on the soil can go a long way toward its resuscitation and/or continued fertility.
In the section on irrigation, the author favors underdraining to get rid of excess water. he notes that creating ditches and resevoirrs are occasionally the best way to go, but he cautions against this in most instances because it will use up precious soil that could be used for planting and growing.
There is also a section on the different kinds of grass in the country. There is also a relevant section on how to grow sugar cane, cotton, oats, grain, corn, fruit, roots, and others products.
The author also discusses rotation crops and shade trees and how to build adequate farm buildings.
Some of the material in the book is dated, especially when the author talks about plows and harrows that are no longer used today. But most of what is here seems to be good, sane advice for the farmer. Recommended.

Inventive talent has completely revolutionized the processes of farming. The work which required the labor of many, under primitive methods, is now better done by one person with the aid of improved appliances. To explain and illustrate some of the most practical and easily made appliances is the object of this volume. They are such as secure greater comfort to domestic animals, provide supplies of wholesome water, economize labor and assist in dispatching much of the important work on the farm. The hints and suggestions herein contained are the result of practical experience. It is believed that every farmer, gardener, householder, in fact every one interested in labor-saving contrivances, will find very much of interest and value in this volume.

Book Description
Up-to-date coverage and a unique, multidisciplinary approach
The ongoing effort to protect our valuable ground-water resources necessarily involves scientists and engineers from many disciplines. Ground-Water Microbiology and Geochemistry, Second Edition is designed to bridge the historical lack of communication among these disciplines by detailing-in language that cuts across specialties-the impact of microorganisms and microbial processes on ground-water systems.
Carefully revised to reflect the many recent discoveries that have been made in the field, the Second Edition begins with an overview of microbiology, ideal for hydrologists and others who may lack formal training in the field. These initial chapters systematically cover the kinds of microorganisms found in subsurface environments, focusing on their growth, metabolism, genetics, and ecology.
The second part of the book offers a hydrologic perspective on how microbial processes affect ground-water geochemistry in pristine systems. It also introduces the different classes of ground-water systems, and gives an overview of techniques for sampling subsurface environments. Readers gain an understanding of biogeochemical cycling in ground-water systems-in coverage unique to this book-and how ground-water chemistry can be used to study microbial processes in aquifer systems.
The final section of the book deals with the biodegradation of human-introduced contaminants in ground-water systems, with an up-to-date review of the physiology, biochemistry, and redox conditions that favor biodegradation processes.
Ground-Water Microbiology and Geochemistry, Second Edition is important reading for geoscientists, hydrologists, and environmental engineers, as well as for water planners and lawyers involved in environmental issues. It also serves as a compelling text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in ground-water chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
Oh for an editor.......2003-04-30
This second edition is just as full of typos as the first, an average of 1/page, from misuse of "it's" to alternation of the spelling of Monod (Monad), to slipping the superscript so 10^5 becomes 105. The illustrations are fine and clear, and subject to the same mispelling.
The author is with the USGeological Survey, which at least used to be a paragon of critical editing, and one had hoped for better proofing in this expansion of the widely used and acclaimed text. A book at this price that stands to be a long-lived authority should have received better.
The expansion is welcome, since geomicrobiology is advancing so fast that the first edition was already out of date. Much of the expansion is given to petroleum hydrocarbons (with a couple of pages on MTBE) and chlorinated solvents, some of which has again become dated since the second edition, already, some of which appears catering to school classes.
Some of the more mysterious questions of geomicrobiology are still avoided (e.g. how do microbes get into clayey deposits where pores are smaller than average bugs and pore throats are much smaller? did individuals get buried with the sediment and adapt to survive millions of years in virtual dormancy?). And Chapelle cannot quite bring himself to adopt the new divisions of Archaea and Bacteria, using the term bacteria to refer to both, in the old style, although he acknowledges the newer thinking.
Unfortunately, in such a small specialty, the existence of an authoritative edition discourages challengers, and we will no doubt wait another or ten years for another geomicrobiology text.
If you are thinking about this book as a reference, rather than a required text, you might look instead at the American Society for Microbiology's Manual of Environmental Microbiology, ed. Hurst, 1997, ASM Press. This is a collection of articles by 90 or so microbiologists that you can probably get used, is 900 p with considerably more breadth and depth than Chapelle, and is a bibliophile's delight. Chapelle has a section in Envir Microbio, which seems to be typo-free.
Envir Microbio also contains, for instance in a section on landfill processes, relatively extensive material on fermentation, which gets about a paragraph in Chapelle's book. Fermentation is very important in groundwater bioremediation, but typically gets short shrift because it is complicated and inefficient, and hard to track because it does not consume electron acceptors, and many of its products (typically acids) do not show up in traditional chemical analyses. Landfill engineers know a lot more about fermentation than geomicrobiologists.
Chapelle is also disappointing in not having stretched this edition to cover the budding discipline of isotopic fractionation in documenting microbial attenuation processes. To be sure, most of the published work using GC IRMS to separate and measure isotope ratios of individual organic compounds post-dates this second edition, but he must have been aware of these developments. He mentions some traditional isotopes to evidence evolution of some systems.
Chapelle's index is also skimpy. No page reference, for instance, for iron reducing bacteria, although he discusses them at some length, mentioning Geobacter chapelleii, named, deservedly, after himself.
But no scientific book goes as far as we would like down our special interests. Science literature is a work in progress, not a bible, and it is silly to expect The Book of Geomicrobiology & Geochemistry. I am not sending my Chapelle back.

Book Description
The Iraqi marshlands housed a 3000+ year-old civilization until Saddam Hussein ruthlessly drained the marsh region following the 1991 uprising. Many of the insurgents fled to the marsh wetland region (between the Baghdad in the North and Basra in the South, and between the Tigris and Euphrates) when Saddam Hussein crushed the rebellion. Saddam then retaliated by draining the marsh areas, which not only housed a culture that had changed little over the centuries but which housed a rich and fragile ecosystem.
Sustaining the Iraqi Marshlands uses examples of restoration efforts around the globe to look at ways to best restore the Iraqi marshlands in order to make life there sustainable into the foreseeable future.

"Nada"
