Customer Reviews:
So So for Beginners -- Terrible if you have read other books.......2001-03-10
This book is good if you are looking for a somewhat decent introduction to terminology and processes. However, I think you will find other books a far better investment in your time. I would say this is a high school level course in VC.
I question some of the motives of the author through the book. At one point he says that the best way to meet a VC is to have an introduction by a broker. In my experience taking three companies through VC, I have found this is the absolute worse way of dealing with them. All of my friends who are partners at Chicago based VC firms say they would rather the entrepreneur come directly to them. You can tell the author is an attorney, because his advice is to use an attorney to find Venture Capital. Also, the author touts the fact he is a lecturer at Wharton. Lecturer and Professor are worlds apart. It isn't that hard to get an invitation to speak at a business school, so I don't put much weight on his using this as a claim to fame.
This book is good for terminology, but not good for advice. My recommendation is that you do not follow the guidelines here, only use the book as an introduction to terminology.
If you want a real book on advice, listen to someone that has taken a company through the process. Get Rob Ryan's book "Entrepreneur America". You will find it is a much better investment of time and money.
Good for beginner.......1999-06-10
You will find the quite difficult to follow, but it is interesting to read and you will find new information on each page if VC is stranger to you.
Start Elsewhere.......1999-04-28
This seems to be a bunch of lecture notes for a Venture Capital course masquerading as a book. Like lecture notes, the material presented is spotty and uneven, but interspersed with enough factoids to keep the reader interested. As a text, it would have benefited from an outline and a good editor. About 45% of its 368 pages are appendices (course handouts) of sample contracts. If this is your first venture into venture capital, find the course text or read something like Linda Chandler's Winning Strategies for Capital Formation. Then read this to add some depth.

Product Description
Soil carbon, perhaps as no other factor, influences soil. It affects plant relationships through its direct and indirect impacts on mineral solubility, exchange capacity, nutrient availability, moisture supply, aggregate formation, and soil erosion. This book focuses on a single factor that in many ways describes, defines, and delineates the study of forest soils as a unique niche in the broader continuum of soil science.

Book Description
This book presents the essential facts of chemistry and the chemical aspects of other science related to mortuary science. The book follows closely the recommended course curriculum outline of the American Board of Funeral Service Education. The organization of the book flows logically from inorganic to organic to biochemistry. It begins with a discussion of general chemistry in the first part of the book. Among the topics addressed are: measurements; matter and energy; nature of matter and the changes in matter; chemical reactions; solution; ionization; and selected compounds such as oxygen, hydrogen, water, and ammonia. The second part of the book segues into a discussion of organic chemistry. Among the topics discussed are: nomenclature; reactions; and the uses of fundamental compounds. The third section of the book presents a discussion of biochemistry. The book provides embalming applications throughout and concludes with a chapter summarizing the action and composition of embalming fluids. A valuable chemistry reference book for mortuary professionals.
Customer Reviews:

Book Description
This book results from a workshop at the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Switzerland, where geochemists, geophysicists, and photogeologists have combined their expertise to constrain the timescales and geological processes in the evolution of Mars.
In order to achieve this goal, the ages of cratered lunar surfaces, which are dated precisely by the radiometric ages of returned samples, have been taken as a reference for the inner solar system chronology. The derived ages of cratered geological units on Mars indicate ongoing geological activity from about 4.5 Gyr ago till modern geologic time. Ancient surfaces involve primordial crustal material with strong magnetization that has remained from Mars' core formation within the first 20 Myr of the solar system, whereas other surfaces were created during major geological processing at about 3-4.5 Gyr ago, probably associated with a denser atmosphere and more fluvial environment, and also to exposures of volcanism. The youngest surfaces indicate volcanism, weathering, gullying, exhumation, and modest water release all operating within the last few 100~Myr, with the youngest detected flows at less than 10 Myr ago. Neither Earth nor Moon offers such a complete geological record.
This picture is consistent with radiometric age data of Martian meteorites which indicate that Mars has not only ancient crustal material, as represented in the ALH84001 meteorite, but at least some geologically young igneous rocks with ages of a few 100 Myr. Remote sensing of the Martian surface identifies two broad groups of igneous rock units, basaltic and andesitic, as is confirmed by in-situ chemical analyses at the Pathfinder landing site.
Based on these results, the book contains an update on the overall stratigraphic system and geologic processes of the Martian surface, and a recent review on the newest models of the Martian interior structure and on the knowledge about the history of the Martian atmosphere and hydrosphere.

Book Description
Climatic Change is a rapidly evolving domain that has prompted the publication of numerous scientific works in recent years, reflecting both the public and scientific interest in the topic. This book focuses upon climate processes, variability and change and applies the general principles related to these issues, particularly in Switzerland. Although a small country, Switzerland is characterized by complex topography where climatic processes are often enhanced due to the presence of the Alps. In addition, there is a remarkable density of observational data in both the natural and social sciences that enable a comprehensive assessment of climate processes, their long-term trends and their impacts.
This book draws upon recent scientific work by the author, as well as by close colleagues working within scientific networks both in Switzerland and Europe, in order to provide the reader with up-to-date information on climate processes in the course of the 20th and 21st centuries.
This book is intended for students from the undergraduate level onwards and researchers interested in climate issues specific to the alpine region.

Book Description
The novel tectonic model of the deep crustal structure of the Alpine collision zone is the result of an integration of seismic reflection and refraction data and structural data. Besides data gathered from the crust/mantle boundary, significant new insight was gained from the shallower structures. This includes 3D, subsurface mapping of Alpine nappes and basement uplifts, as well as valleys incised deeply into the bedrock to levels several hundreds of meters below the present sea level. The structure of the Alps is also discussed in the framework of the geodynamic evolution - from Mesozoic sedimentation to Cenozoic subduction and collision. NRP 20 involved researchers from the Swiss Universities and the Federal Institute of Technology, as well as earth scientists from industry. Funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation was subsequently backed up by contributions from the participating universities and the Federal Institute of Technology and from industry. This book will interest students and researchers eager to have an up to date view of the Alpine orogen, its structure and evolution as a typical example of a con- tinental collision zone. The presentation of the full seismic sections, their geological interpretation, as well as geological profiles will interest readers not only in the field of geophysics and geology, but in earth sciences in general.

Book Description
This short account of elementary particles written for the layman poses the questions: are quarks the fundamental building blocks of matter; what are they like; how many different kinds exist; and can they exist in the free state? What is the ultimate structure of matter? Is it made of atoms, small, simple, indivisible particles, or not? John Dalton’s ‘chemical atoms’ turned out to be composite, composed of an electron cloud and a very small, very dense nucleus. This nucleus, in turn, was found to be composite, made up of protons and neutrons bound together by pions. All three of these (and many like particles) have now been found to be made of quarks. At first there were only three of these and they were thought to be long sought after fundamental building blocks. But now we know of at least 18 quarks, 18 anti-quarks and eight ‘gluons’ that hold the quarks together. The whole atomic idea is in doubt and the alternate possibility of a Universe that is one, whole and indivisible opens up. This fascinating book will be an inspiration to anyone wishing a first exposure to this intriguing and mystical area of modern physics.
