Amazon.com Audiobook Review

We're constantly negotiating in our lives, whether it's convincing the kids to do their homework or settling million-dollar lawsuits. For those who need help winning these battles, Roger Fisher has developed a simple and straightforward five-step system for how to behave in negotiations. Narrated soothingly by NPR announcer Bob Edwards, Fisher adds the meaty portions of the material with a sense of playfulness. The blend of voices makes this tape easy to listen to, especially the real-life negotiating scenarios, in which negotiating examples are given. This is a must-have tape for every businessperson's car. (Running time: one hour, one cassette) --Sharon Griggins

Book Description

Getting to Yes is a straightorward, universally applicable method for negotiating personal and professional disputes without getting taken -- and without getting angry.

It offers a concise, step-by-step, proven strategy for coming to mutually acceptable agreements in every sort of conflict -- whether it involves parents and children, neighbors, bosses and employees, customers or corporations, tenants or diplomats. Based on the work of Harvard Negotiation Project, a group that deal continually with all levels of negotiations and conflict resolutions from domestic to business to international, Getting to Yes tells you how to:

I was better off buying the book from the regualr store. The book cost me more due to S/H.

5 out of 5 stars A positive-sum game.......2007-09-02

Despite the common perception, negotiation is not about winning, it's about coming up with a resolution which benefits both sides. In order to develop such an agreement you have to be willing to listen, and to understand the opposing side on both the personal and business levels. 'Getting to Yes' teaches us how to develop these skills. From personal issues, to tactics, to psychological tricks, to best alternative (BATNA) analysis, Roger Fisher covers a lot of ground in this classic. The book is short and to the point, and serves as a great launchpad for further research in the area.

5 out of 5 stars The Godfather of all Negotiation.......2007-08-27

I have purchased the unabridged audio versions to save time. Harvard developed principled negotiation which causes an unsurpassable system for negotiation. This is the book everyone should read if there's only one book in the world on negotiation! Nearly one hundred raving five star reviews from readers, lawyers, business people, professionals, students, teachers, and negotiators can't be wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, this is a "must read".......2007-08-19

Reviewing a book 15 years after its publication might seem a bit pointless. But that depends on the book. In this case, we're talking about a book that has near cult status in the business community.

Over the past 15 years, this book has been referred to and revered in thousands--if not millions--of articles, seminars, college course, and training programs. In fact, as of the date of this review over 100 published books cite Getting to Yes.

If you're in business and haven't read this book, you are operating with less than full power. But the book has value well beyond the business world. If you've ever had a disagreement end in a way that left you or the other party feeling cheated or manipulated, that ending probably came about because you were either bargaining about position or confusing the people with the problem. Either strategy guarantees at least one loser. Unfortunately, most disagreements follow one or both of these losing strategies.

With discipline and practice, you can apply the knowledge in this book so that you:

* Preserve relationships without giving in (go along to get along).
* Can satisfy the interests of both parties.
* Ensure both parties are motivated to uphold their end of the bargain.
* Feel good about the agreement reached and the people who reached it.

The strategies have nothing to do with tricking other people or playing games. The strategies have everything to do with respecting other people and refusing to play games.

In the publishing world, "thud factor" is a major consideration. Many readers expect filler, in the form of anecdotes and stories (as if they want the author to assume they are too daft to understand assertions made directly in plain English). Getting to Yes is 200 pages long, with the last 50 pages or so being basically a review and a "Cliff Notes" of the first 150. So, you have the book followed by a summary of the book. What you don't have is 150 pages stretched to 300 pages with stories that a busy executive would rather skip.

The concise writing is a huge plus to many people, but some reviewers see it as a minus. So, you may also read reviews saying that other books are "better" because they are thicker.

I have two proposed solutions to that:

1. Read the first 150 pages of Getting to Yes twice. This will equal 300 pages.
2. Read the book, then practice it. Take 150 pages of notes regarding your experiences. You now have the stories and filler you wanted.

The authors wrote this book not to entertain, but to educate. It gets to the point. There is no obfuscation, meandering, or distraction. That same communication style is required in a negotiation. The occasional anecdote may be helpful, but to lead a negotiation to a successful conclusion you must focus on the real issues. That is what this book does. And that's why it's a classic in the classroom and in the boardroom, and in executive suites and staterooms throughout the world.

Be sure to read Getting Past No and The Power of a Positive No, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book First.......2007-08-14

Whatever you do in life this book should be your second bible! It is a short easy read, and will help you deal with every person-to-person interaction in your life. That includes your family life, your social life, and your working life. I am a professional negotiator who has read many other books (some very good and some not so good), and also walked-the-walk in real-life. I keep a copy of this on my night table and still glance through it regularly.

                              Book Description

Can Japan's beef industry survive into the next century? Per capita consumption of beef and veal has increased in Japan by more than fivefold in the period 1960 to 1990, and is still increasing. Imports have grown and a central issue is the extent to which Japan's domestic beef industry can meet projected demand and compete with foreign-produced beef. This book begins with an overview of agriculture in Japan and of the changes which have and are taking place in dietary patterns and beef consumption. It then assesses the current production situation and technological changes. The authors describe their own computer program for the economic analysis of embryo transfer, a technique which has the most potential to reduce significantly the cost of beef production. The concluding chapter then provides a summary of policy implications in relation to technological, economic and social factors.

                                                Book Description

For centuries biologists have been extremely interested in the structure of desert plants as examples of natural selection to harsh environmental conditions. Indeed, desert plants are frequently used as examples in many biology classes and textbooks to illustrate natural selection, but this has led to an unfortunate litany of errors and misconceptions about desert plant adaptations. This new synthesis focuses on plants of lowland tropical and subtropical arid deserts. Readers will be surprised to discover that many features commonly ascribed to desert plants are rareley observed in the most common species. Instead, the typical structural adaptations of nonsucculent warm desert plants are now viewed as ways to maximize photosynthetic rate.

                                                  Description:
In this study we used compound specific ^1^3C and ^1^4C isotopic signatures to determine the degree to which recent plant material and older soil organic matter (SOM) served as carbon substrates for microorganisms in soils. We determined the degree to which plant-derived carbon was used as a substrate by comparison of the ^1^3C content of microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) from soils of two sites that had undergone a vegetation change from C3 to C4 plants in the past 20-30 years. The importance of much older SOM as a substrate was determined by comparison of the radiocarbon content of PLFA from soils of two sites that had different ^1^4C concentrations of SOM. The ^1^3C shift in PLFA from the two sites that had experienced different vegetation history indicated that 40-90% of the PLFA carbon had been fixed since the vegetation change took place. Thus PLFA were more enriched in ^1^3C from the new C4 vegetation than it was observed for bulk SOM indicating recent plant material as preferentially used substrate for soil microorganisms. The largest ^1^3C shift of PLFA was observed in the soil that had high ^1^4C concentrations of bulk SOM. These results reinforce that organic carbon in this soil for the most part cycles rapidly. The degree to which SOM is incorporated into microbial PLFA was determined by the difference in ^1^4C concentration of PLFA derived from two soils one with high ^1^4C concentrations of bulk SOM and one with low. These results showed that 0-40% of SOM carbon is used as substrate for soil microorganisms. Furthermore a different substrate usage was identified for different microorganisms. Gram-negative bacteria were found to prefer recent plant material as microbial carbon source while Gram-positive bacteria use substantial amounts of SOM carbon. This was indicated by ^1^3C as well as ^1^4C signatures of their PLFA. Our results find evidence to support 'priming' in that PLFA indicative of Gram-negative bacteria associated with roots contain both plant- and SOM-derived C. Most interestingly, we find PLFA indicative of archeobacteria (methanothrophs) that may indicate the use of other carbon sources than plant material and SOM to a substantial amount suggesting that inert or slow carbon pools are not essential to explain carbon dynamics in soil.

                                                  Book Description

Due to many issues related to long-term carbon dynamics, an improved understanding of the biology of C4 photosynthesis is required by more than the traditional audience of crop scientists, plant physiologists, and plant ecologists. This work synthesizes the latest developments in C4 biochemistry, physiology, systematics, and ecology. The book concludes with chapters discussing the role of C4 plants in the future development of the biosphere, particularly their interactive effects on soil, hydrological, and atmospheric processes.

For plant biologists or non-plant biologists, this is a text that deserves a careful study. Writing in a easy way, it describes various aspects of the C4 plant research. I am sure that anyone interested in plants will find related chapters or sections inspiring. However, most chapters may interest plant ecophysiologists more. M.D. Hatch provides a vivid story on the discovery of the C4 pathway. I believe this chapter alone(Chapter 2) will have a wider audience.

                                                      Book Description

Magnetic Venture is the inside story of Oxford Instruments, the first substantial spin-off company from Oxford University, established in 1959. Written by one of its founders, it describes the ups and downs, the mistakes and successes of a growing science-based company. Over four decades Oxford Instruments grew from its small beginnings in a garden shed to an international company pioneering developments in superconductivity and medical instruments. It has been rightly celebrated as one of Britain's business successes, and became the role model for many later spin-offs. Although the environment for new technology companies has changed much since the early 1960s, many of the problems and challenges for growing science-based firms remain the same. Audrey Wood both tells an exciting story of endeavour and risk-taking, and touches on many issues of importance for today's entrepreneurs. Among these are: the nature of innovation, technology transfer, RandD strategies, marketing, sources of investment, entrepreneurship, university-industry relations, changes in cultural attitudes, management styles, growth cycles, and problems of acquisitions and mergers. Magnetic Venture explains how scientific novelties were developed into important products. The first was superconductivity, from which the company developed magnets for research, magnets for unravelling the structures of molecules in the design of new drugs, and, best known to the public, magnets for body-scanning. The final chapter looks in detail at the Oxford Trust and tells how this organization has been instrumental in promoting a better environment for the formation and incubation of new science-based companies. The story will appeal to many business academics and researchers, advisers and policy makers, the new breed of scientist/entrepreneur, and those interested in important scientific developments such as superconductivity, ultra-low temperatures, and magnetic imaging.

Written with great satirical perception, the book relates the adventures of a proud, resourceful Sephardic schnorrer (or beggar) who lords it over his fellow mendicants in London in the late 1790s. A literary gem, the book pokes fun at the prejudices dividing London's Jewish community in the late 18th century.

Few Americans will recognize the name Israel Zangwill (1864 - 1926), but he was a prominent author, essayist, and teacher in England in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. He was famous enough in his day that his photo even appeared on the cover of the September 17, 1923 issue of Time Magazine. His many books are generally split into two categories, Jewish and non-Jewish works. His Jewish works explore the life of the Anglo-Jew living in England, not just during the time Zangwill lived, but in previous ages as well. They include popular, yet now more difficult to obtain, works such as Children of the Ghetto (1892) and Ghetto Comedies (1907). The King of the Schnorrers (1894) is possibly his most popular, and easy to obtain, work in this category.

It is important when reading The King of the Schnorrers to understand the context under which it was written. As such, the introduction included in the Dover edition linked in this review is incredibly userful. Not only does it describe Yiddish terms such as schnorrer (beggar), but it puts the work in its historical and cultural context for the reader who might not otherwise understand it.

This edition also keeps in mind the reader will not necessarily understand Yiddish or Hebrew, and as such, keeps translations next to the original text. I have to admit, it was a little odd to see bar mitzvah translated as confirmation, even if it is sort of correct.

The book's humor was on the level of Voltaire's Candide. It was quick, funny and very, very satirical. I enjoyed the material for the same reasons I love Candide. The satire is so tongue in cheek, often the people it was directed at would completely miss it.

There's pure Anglo-Saxon humor in the fact the Jews of England were segregated to the Ghetto, and yet at the same time, the Sephardic (Spanish/Portuguese) Jews segregated themselves further from the European Tedesco Jews. Combine this with the hilarity of a beggar who believes working will lead to a life of ruin, and conning the average working Jew out of his hard earned wages is his right in life, and hilarity ensues.

This is a very short book, only six chapters. However, the language is a little harder to get through if you wish to understand the full breadth of humor being offered. It might take a bit longer to read than assumed at first glance.

Overall, both the story and the satire are worth the read. This book is a little hard to get, but if it can be managed, I very much recommend the read.
