Global Investing for Maximum Profit and Safety is an adventurous guide to international investing; one might even say a reckless one. To the usual reasons for investing overseas--to diversify and to profit from fast growth in emerging markets--author Jerome Schneider adds a new one: to evade the law. His previous book, The Complete Guide to Offshore Money Havens, explained how to keep money away from ex-wives and creditors by stashing it in banks in discreet locales such as the island of Montserrat. This dodge, which Schneider euphemistically calls "wealth protection," is again on his mind but now with the aim of making that protected wealth grow. He touts the unique advantages of investing in mutual funds headquartered in foreign countries where regulation is lax. "Offshore funds can invest in absolutely anything they want," Schneider enthuses, because they "legally circumvent" the "overzealous review" of the Securities and Exchange Commission. This is supposed to be encouraging. Of course, offshore funds cannot legally sell shares to U.S. investors, so the help of an intermediary is needed. And Schneider is not above pointing out that he happens to operate such a service out of Vancouver, B.C. His hyped-up, overconfident, irresponsible book is little more than an infomercial. --Barry Mitzman

Another sales job by Schneider and guess who he's selling?.......1998-06-04
This book explains the basics of offshore investing after doing his usual slamming of US policies, taxes and the US stock markets. Again like, his last book, he gives you the "Schneider Approach"... This latest book makes some...preposterous statements such as "Although US markets cannot offer you the chance to get rich on Wall Street." but later talks about Warren Buffett who did exactly that and is now worth over $20 billion US. He then touts offshore markets in countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong but then rates them all as to either proceed caution, or as not recommended, that is all except for Malaysia which he gives a "Highest rating." I have read many MUCH BETTER books on the subject of offshore investing offered by Amazon Books.

Book Description
The book clearly and concisely explains the basic principles of Lagrangian dynamicsand provides training in the actual physical and mathematical techniques of applying Lagrange's equations, laying the foundation for a later study of topics that bridge the gap between classical and quantum physics, engineering, chemistry and applied mathematics, and for practicing scientists and engineers.
Customer Reviews:
Clear and complete with useful examples........2007-01-12
For the purpose of either a review of Lagrangian dynamics or an introduction, I found this to be a particularly good Shaum's Outline. Even though I had access to one from a colleague, I purchased my own copy to have on reference.
Lagrangian Dynamics.......2007-01-04
I have found this to be an excellent reference addition to my library.
Moderately helpful.......2006-02-15
This Schaum's outline is OK if you have an engineer's interest in the subject, but it does not have the kinds of problems you typically encounter in the pure sciences. It is also not typical of the high quality you find in other Schaum's outlines.
In Lagrangian mechanics, the trajectory of an object is derived by finding the path which minimizes the action, a quantity which is the integral of the Lagrangian over time. The Lagrangian for classical mechanics is taken to be the difference between the kinetic energy and the potential energy.
This considerably simplifies many physical problems. For example, consider a bead on a hoop. If one were to calculate the motion of the bead using Newtonian mechanics, one would have a complicated set of equations which would take into account the forces that the hoop exerts on the bead at each moment. The same problem using Lagrangian mechanics is much simpler. One looks at all the possible motions that the bead could take on the hoop and mathematically finds the one which minimizes the action. There are fewer equations since one is not directly calculating the influence of the hoop on the bead at a given moment.
I don't think that this Schaum' outline does a good job of showing the difference in approach to these kinds of problems. Instead Newtonian and Lagrangian approaches to problems are all jumbled up together. Instead, I recommend that you type "Lagrangian Dynamics" into Google and look at some of the excellent sets of lecture notes available on-line. The online tutorial "A Crash Course in Lagrangian Dynamics" is particularly helpful. At only 18 pages it gets to the heart of the matter and contains some solved numerical examples.
As an aside, if you use Amazon's "search inside" function for this book you will be completely confused. The table of contents and "excerpt" shown are for this book. However, the "Surprise Me" sections are from "Schaum's Outline of Mathematica". If the student of Lagrangian dynamics electronically "thumbs" through this book and wonders what creating 3D graphics with Mathematica has to do with Lagrangian dynamics, the answer is "nothing" - this is an editing error courtesy of Amazon.
I agree, this is NOT a Schaum's........2004-07-13
I have used Schaums outlines to help with several subjects in Engineering and Physics. This book was printed in 1967. Steps are missing for many of the examples, and answers are only included for the problems in Chapter 2.
This is a Schaum's?.......2003-12-31
As a graduate student in physics, I have collected many Schuam's Outlines over the years and usually find them very helpful. This one was not up to par. The derivations and example problems were very wordy and skipped over half the mathematical details - one problem I did from the book required eleven steps when I was finished and the book showed three. Some chapters had only a few worked example problems and dozens that are given simply "as an exercise to the reader."

Book Description
Adaptive image processing is one of the most important techniques in visual information processing, especially in image restoration, filtering, enhancement, and segmentation. While other books present some aspects of this important issue, none treat it from a purely computational intelligence (CI) point of view. The first to do so and using the synergies of neural networks, fuzzy logic, and evolutionary computation, Adaptive Image Processing covers both the fundamentals of CI and human perception and the CI methods and algorithms for adaptive image processing in regularization, edge detection, enhancement, and early vision.

Book Description
The worldwide bestseller Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach brings further refinement to an approach that emphasizes a physical understanding of the fundamental concepts of thermodynamics. The authors offer an engineering textbook that "talks directly to tomorrow's engineers in a simple yet precise manner, that encourages creative thinking, and is read by the students with interest and enthusiasm."
The new edition features an early introduction of the first law of thermodynamics, separate coverage of closed systems energy analysis, combined coverage of control volume mass and energy analysis, and revised coverage of compressible flow. Over 300 comprehensive problems have been added to this physically intuitive text, many of which come from industrial applications.
The media package for this text is extensive, giving users a large variety of supplemental resources to choose from. A Student Resources DVD is packaged with each new copy of the text and contains the popular Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software, Physical Experiments, and an Interactive Thermodynamics tutorial. An Online Learning Center is also available to students and instructors at http://www.mhhe.com/cengel. Instructors also have access to an Instructor Resource CD-ROM that provides useful tools in order to optimize in-class presentations.
Customer Reviews:
Textbook.......2007-01-12
It was the correct textbook. It's an old version but that is what the prof required. Books are Books.
Ivestigation and extra help.......2007-01-07
This book provide a excellent definition of Thermodynamic that help you to understand all concepts that you need to learn this subjet, the problems are very clear to understand the process to resolve they.
A book for chemical engineers written by mechanical engineers..........2007-01-04
My class used only the first eleven chapters, but it was clear that the chapters were written more with a mechanical engineering bent of mind. The theory part was great, but the examples could use more work, especially for the thermodynamic cycle problems, which would have been much easier if an accompanying entropy-temperature graph was present. also, a few of the worked out solutions were incorrect. Overall, a good book, but keep a look out for alternates. Maybe the updated edition is better..
Also, make sure your copy has the property table accompanying it, because they are really important and for many problems, it is easier to use the slim tables than the heavy book.
Good product.......2006-11-10
I got my book that I ordered in the time they specified and it was ing good condition.
Fantastic.......2006-10-29
Frankly, I think that this was one of the best engineering texts I have had. Granted, I am only a stupid mechanical engineer, but this book gives your all that you need for as a basis for heat transfer and other courses. Also included in the special topics are refrigerators. Yes, they are random, but they actually connected pulling values out of tables with real life. The book had good examples, and enough of them. The text was readable and straightforward.
Something that I rather like is that the pictures were in red, black, and white. I think it makes the pages less distracting and easier to read (although sometimes it does take an extra minute to figure out the diagram).
I am not sure what the DVD was--some software, I believe, but no professor ever bothers to use it. That is what I wish they had cut to save money.

Book Description
Concise, undergraduate-level text, designed for a one-semester course, covers classical Maxwell-Boltzmann-Planck statistics and the two quantum statistics. Also physical applications in various fields of science and engineering. Many useful problems in the text, plus three important appendixes on Fourier series representation of an arbitrary function, complex variables and Lagrange’s and Hamilton’s equations. 1971 edition.
Customer Reviews:
Too much algebra, too little explanation in the physics.......2000-08-14
This book is loaded with algebra of Lagrange multiplier, partition function, and the derivation of the different distributions. In quantum statistics it jumped into short discussions of spin and solutions of the Schrodinger equation disregarding the fact that these material require at least a second course in quantum mechanics.
The discussion on the physical interpretation of the underlying physical behavior of atoms and particles is minimal.
Another Dover book by Jackson "Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics," targeted towards the same audience is a much better written text.

Book Description
Equal parts novel and screenplay, SPEWING PULP tells the candid tale of lovable, if neurotic, Dale Scribner who dreams of romance and a writing career--despite the fact that he declares poetry "is the same as the word poverty--only it's twisted and can't afford as many letters". Suffering temp jobs, on-line dating and the death of the asterisk key on his computer, Dale searches for sanity in a world full of SUVs, reality shows and Britney Spears. Amidst a raucous rollercoaster ride of faithful and not-so-faithful friends, true love and true disasters, Dale discovers that humor, irony and the unexpected can make happy endings emerge from the most embarrassing misadventures. It's an utterly unconventional confessional...gone Hollywood.

Rules...what rules?.......2005-10-15
I always like to read new works and it's especially gratifying when new writers are so creative and daring and are willing to break the rules of traditional "novel writing". This combination of genres is a dizzying entertaining exercise of creative storytelling and well worth the read.
This is a scream!.......2004-07-16
This is a totally bizarre book that had me laughing out loud over and over. It's about a gay poet and his two female friends--each one forging their future a little differently. The humor is irreverent, the commentary sobering and the romantic elements very sweet. The several writing styles threw me at first, but then it all starts to gel and you see how clever and effective it really is. Once you're hooked, it's hard to put down...and it's over way too fast. I hope there's a part two!
What is this?.......2004-07-09
If you enjoy funny, clever, off the wall and back to the chair humor, you will enjoy this book. Every word in all the reviews so far is true. Yeah...what they said!
