Strategic Planning for Nonprofit Organizations, Second Edition

Book Description
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
As not-for-profits must increasingly achieve greater results with less resources, they are continually seeking ways to use such scarce resources with more economy, with greater efficiency of processes and people within their organizations, and with increased effectiveness of results in order to further their missions. Whether used alone or together with other tools such as benchmarking, activity-based management, and flexible budgeting, the operational review is the tool best used to perform an evaluation of these crucial three e's-economy, efficiency, and effectiveness. This book shows not-for-profit managers why conducting an operational review can be beneficial, explains the tools and personnel needed to conduct the review, and shows in detail how to conduct a review of operations in each area. It includes case study materials for a social service agency, a museum operation, an arts organization, a community service agency, and a college business office. Here is accessible, comprehensive coverage of:
- How to approach an operational review, judge its results, and make recommendations to management
- How to position your not-for-profit organization more effectively in the competitive world of funding, personnel, resources, and service results
- How to identify and implement best practices within funding and operational constraints in all areas of the not-for-profit's operations in an organized program of continuing improvements
. . . and much more, including extensive exhibits, forms, working tools, checklists, and examples for conducting an operational review throughout all functions of a not-for-profit organization. Executive directors, outside auditors, CPAs, manage-ment consultants, boards, fund-raising executives, and all others involved in the not-for-profit's operations will learn to get the most for their mission from this indispensable book.

Book Description
SLAPPS (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation), well known in the United States of America, are on the increase in the United Kingdom. SLAPPS are court actions taken by powerful or wealthy individuals or organisations against ordinary people who seek to express their views and to take part in the decision-making processes which affect their lives. Their effect is meant to 'chill' through legal intimidation - to stop the critics and end the debates. A steady growth of SLAPPs has occurred where government and business see their interests being threatened by those who dare to rock the boat. The court case becomes a weapon in a larger political war, tying people up in court rooms, sapping their energy and money, carrying the fear of severe legal sanction. In this way the law is used not to protect a valid legal claim but rather to frighten and silence those who are bold enough to criticise, question and speak out. Looking at various high-profile cases the author considers both the theory and practice of attacks upon free speech in a modern democracy. In the new era of human rights in the United Kingdom the author poses important questions about what the use of such legal actions tells us about the health of our democracy at the turn of the millenium.

Product Description
Ever since the Greeks coined the language we commonly use for scientific description, mythology and science have developed separately. But what came before the Greeks? What if we could prove that all myths have one common origin in a celestial cosmology? What if the gods, the places they lived, and what they did are but ciphers for celestial activity, a language for the perpetuation of complex astronomical data? Drawing on scientific data, historical and literary sources, the authors argue that our myths are the remains of a preliterate astronomy, an exacting science whose power and accuracy were suppressed and then forgotten by an emergent Greco-Roman world view. This fascinating book throws into doubt the self-congratulatory assumptions of Western science about the unfolding development and transmission of knowledge. This is a truly seminal and original thesis, a book that should be read by anyone interested in science, myth, and the interactions between the two.
Customer Reviews:
"A Ring of Noble Metal".......2007-04-17
Like so many of the readers of this fascinating book, Hamlet's Mill, it is a work that I have read several times, learning much with each reading. When first published in 1969, it was reviewed by the late MIT Professor Emeritus, Philip Morrison, who was reknown as a distinguished theoretical astrophysicist and interpreter of science for the general public. He wrote " "The book is polemic, even cocky; it will make a tempest in the inkpots. It nonetheless has the ring of noble metal, although it is only a bent key to the first of many gates." Many since that time have taken Santillana's lead and attempted to apply this "bent key" to other gates...as I did in 1992 with my book, "The Death of Gods in Ancient Egypt." After several readings of Hamlet's Mill I became convinced that a concerted search through the writings and artwork of Egypt, a culture whose myths diSantillana and Dechend had only written of superficially, would serve as a reliable test of the book's assertions. I certainly came away from that endeavor, convinced that Hamlet's Mill did indeed offer a valuable key to the many puzzles of ancient religious myths and beliefs.
Offkilter.......2007-01-04
A lot of interesting theses and odd connections, but the horrid presentation and possibly untrustworthy sources lessen the value of this book.
Hamlet' farm.......2006-11-03
The book is based on old texts that are not commonly known. The subject is interesting and in the same directions with recent discoveries on the human race past. The book is difficult to be read due to the way it is written by the author.
As above, so below........2006-11-03
Please note this is NOT an easy book by any means and should not be attempted by those looking for the casual read. Although very well researched, the organization of the book is somewhat chaotic making it more difficult to understand and follow. The main idea outlined by the authors of the book is that myths, on a primeval level, represented a "technical language" designed to record and transmit astronomical observations - most importantly those connected with the precession of the equinoxes. The mythology of many ancient cultures including Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek, MesoAmerican, Chinese, and a wealth of others all included this knowledge. The authors show by dissecting some mythological stories of these cultures the imbedded astronomical data contained within and their precessional implications. Although some of these myths are easier understood than others, there are some cases made by the authors that are arguable at best.
To take it to the next level, check out Fingerprints of the Gods and its sequel Heavens Mirror by Graham Hancock; The Orion Mystery by Adrian Gilbert and Robert Bauval; The Message of the Sphinx by Robert Bauval and Graham Hancock; The Sirius Mystery by Robert Temple.
Really Heavy.......2006-08-25
This book is unbelievably heavy in the figurative sense. Although the writing can be laborious, the argument put forth regarding ancient astronomical facts being tied up in "folk tales" is stunning. Deeply researched, long, this book is definitely NOT for your ten year old.

Book Description
Few processes are as important for environmental geochemistry as the interplay between the oxidation and reduction of dissolved and solid species. The knowledge of the redox conditions is most important to predict the geochemical behaviour of a great number of components, the mobilities of which are directly or indirectly controlled by redox processes. The understanding of the chemical mechanisms responsible for the establishment of measurable potentials is the major key for the evaluation and sensitive interpretation of data. This book is suitable for advanced undergraduates as well as for all scientists dealing with the measurement and interpretation of redox conditions in the natural environment.

A Must for High School Physics Teachers.......2001-03-30
Carole and her committee have put together an excellent book for using the amusement park as a physics laboratory. There is a complete teacher guide, practice problems, instruction for how to construct and use accelerometers, suggestions for making measurements, practice (at school) lab exercises, and a student workbook. The best part is the resources. This includes the excellent reprints from The Physics Teacher journal giving important background on the rides and experience. This compendium of reprinted articles alone is worth the price of the book.
This book is a must, and can be used with other books and texts.

Book Description
And it's got to be done right, or you might as well not do it at all. You can't go offending people. But gee, you've no idea what an amount of gall women have! Why, the first week I was at the office a female got past me by saying she was the boss' wife. She looked all right, she spoke all right; so I thought she was all right, and I opened the gate. In about ten minutes out she came, said good morning with a nice smile, and beat it. And two seconds later I'm rung for and there's the boss chewing holes in the carpet and smashing up the furniture with his bare hands. Seems she was a lady book agent; and before he could get rid of her she had landed him with Historic Heartbreakers, highly educational and as interesting as a novel. Since then I've played it safe. No body gets past me without an appointment.
