Information Markets: What Businesses Can Learn from Financial Innovation
William J., Jr. Wilhelm , and Joseph D. Downing Manufacturer: Harvard Business School Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1578512786 |
Book Description
Information is power-and in financial markets that power has long belonged to intermediaries responsible for managing the exchange of information among clients. But now, technology has made information simultaneously and easily accessible to all through a simple Internet connection. Moreover, technology has codified many practices that once relied solely on human relationships and judgment, transforming the control of industry know-how and intellectual property, the structure of the financial markets, and ultimately, the makeup of the entire marketplace for information.
In the midst of the so-called new economy, the evolution of financial markets provides a time-tested guide to how and why intermediaries and the information they work with are evolving along with technology. It also convincingly proves that these information intermediaries-or >infomediaries,-will not soon be replaced. In Information Markets, finance industry experts William J. Wilhelm Jr. and Joseph D. Downing systematically explore the interplay between human capital and information technology in financial markets, and distill critical lessons for strategists in other information-rich businesses, including health care, law, entertainment, and publishing.
The authors explain that technological advances have upset the delicate balance between an innovator's incentives for discovery (profiting from ideas) and the interests of society at large (information "wants to be free"). They provide a durable framework for understanding the tensions that arise in information-intensive markets, and how organizations adapt to these tensions in the face of continuous technological change.
The authors also describe how intermediaries resolve coordination problems according to long-established economic rules and experience, explain how the evolution of the intermediary function will affect the enforcement of intellectual property rights, and identify new opportunities organizations can exploit to create value and fuel innovation.
For any business dependent on information exchange, this timely book explains the vital role of the intermediary in today's global marketplace.
Customer Reviews:
Great insight into human capital and knowledge management.......2002-05-19
While the authors use the Investment Banking industry to make their point, the information is applicable to all areas of business. A must read for those who are concerned with the acquisition of information and the management of corporate knowledge.
Insightful, provocative view of the securities industry.......2002-03-24
Do not be turned off by the greek (mathematical) equations in the chapter about IPO allocations.
The authors have a very strong framework that holds up well in the real world, even in the post internet bubble world.
I especially enjoyed the chapter about the Goldman Sachs IPO and ECNs.

Supply Chain Games: Operations Management and Risk Valuation (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science)
Konstantin Kogan , and Charles S. Tapiero Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387727752 |
Book Description
In today’s global economy, supply chains are an essential ingredient to corporate survival and growth. Operations strategy in supply chains must assume an ever-expanding and strategic role of risks that modern enterprises face when they operate in an interdependent supply chain environment. These operational and strategic facets entail a brand new set of operational problems and risks that have not always been understood or managed very well. It falls to supply chain managers to identify and to educate corporate managers on what these critical operational problems and risks involve. This book provides business students and practitioners with the means to understand, to model and to analyze these outstanding issues and problems that are the essential elements in managing supply chains today.
This book will consider these problems in depth and draw essential conclusions regarding their management in supply chains. As a textbook treatment, it will examine traditional operational problems, expressing them in a strategic context, understanding their complexity, and recognizing their interdependency with other firms within a supply-chain environment. Used throughout the book will be application examples that illustrate all the aspects of dealing with and solving these kinds of problems.
The content of SUPPLY CHAIN GAMES: Operations Management and Risk Valuation is presented in three sections, each of which will emphasize important facets of supply chain management operations. (1) Supply chains and operations modeling and management section will provide static and time models and their gradual extension to a supply chain environment. The section will give special attention to the new concerns and issues at this level of analysis. (2) Inter-temporal supply chain management section will address this aspect as differential games. The differential games will be presented as natural continuous-time extensions of static models so that the effect of various types of dynamics on supply chains can be assessed and insights can be developed. (3) Risk and supply chain management section will deal with risk and supply chains as well as providing numerous applications regarding the management of interdependent operations and quality in a supply chain environment.

Supply Chain Risk Management: Vulnerability and Resilience in Logistics
Donald Waters , and C D J Waters Manufacturer: Kogan Page ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0749448547 |
Book Description
There is constant pressure on managers to improve the efficiency of their supply chains, allowing materials to move quickly and at low cost. This pressure has encouraged a stream of new initiatives and methods, but these new methods also increase the supply chain's vulnerability to disruptions. By removing the slack that used to protect supply chains from unforeseen events, they create inflexible chains where even a small, unexpected event can bring everything to a standstill. These unexpected events define the risks, and supply chain risk management is the function responsible for managing them. Supply Chain Risk Management introduces the principles of this function. It reviews the current thinking on the subject, describes methods that are most widely used, and shows where the subject is heading. Aimed at anyone who wants to know about risk management and its growing impact on the supply chain, it takes a straightforward approach, developing ideas in a logical sequence.

Rock Weathering and Landform Evolution (British Geomorphological Research Group Symposia Series)
Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0471951196 |
Book Description
Rock Weathering and Landform Evolution brings together a series of important studies on rock weathering by leading researchers, and illustrates the diversity of approaches and techniques that are currently being used by geomorphologists to study weathering processes and responses. The book commences with a number of research studies and review chapters on weathering processes and weathered products. This is followed by several discussions of the weathering of cut or dressed rock in urban and coastal environments. Contributors then examine the application of weathering and weathering rates to the dating of deposits or rock surfaces. The final section of the book comprises studies of the relationship between weathering and landforms in a variety of climatic environments. The contributions included in this book cover a wide range of topics and demonstrate the many advances that are being made by researchers investigating rock weathering. Some of the studies deal with state-of-the-art technology, others the very traditional geomorphological skills of observation and deductive reasoning, backed up as necessary by statistical analysis. This volume is the first collection of papers on weathering published for many years, and provides a wealth of information not just to geomorphologists but also to geologists, engineers, architects and archaeologists.
