Good list; so-so book........2006-05-03

This book really can't decide what it wants to be, and feels like it's a few editorial rounds away from being a finished book.

The book has an odd overall structure, and the organization within chapters is a free-association mess of object descriptions, personal recollections, observing advice and seemingly whatever happens to cross Levy's mind.

It's frustrating because there are elements of a good book here, but as it stands it doesn't really work as an observing guide, reference book or personal memoir, despite trying to be all three.

The list of objects itself, currently available on the internet, is an excellent and useful list which could form the basis of an interesting personal observing program.

Perhaps the most famous astronomers of our time, Mr. Levy is one of the most successful comet discoverers in history (actually he's tied for third place in the number of comets found). His finds include the Shoemaker-Levy comet that crashed so dramatically into Jupiter. His formal education includes a degree in Englash. His astronomical activities came as a hobby. Who better to write a book aimed at the amateur astronomer?

This book is based on a list of objects visible in the sky that might be confused with comets. He began this list many years ago to avoid mis-identification as he searched for comets. Here he lists, describes, and usually photographs these items from deep into space. The objects are arranged from 'nearby,' that's say up to a few hundred light years away, to billions of light years.

I can't help but wonder what Galileo would have thought of this book as he spent his final years under house arrest for publishing a book saying that four moons orbited Jupiter.

The book is on methods of reconstruction of past climate, climate changes, oceanography of the South Atlantic (including the Southern Ocean) and the cycling of biochemical components in the ocean. Information about past ocean conditions is provided by so-called paleoceanographic proxies (parameters with approximate unobservable environmental variables, e.g. surface water temperature). Use of proxies and their development has been a major theme of the Collaborative Research Project at the University of Bremen for almost 10 years. In this volume we summarize our results in relation to these proxy studies. Each chapter gives an overview of a specific proxy, provides particular findings obtained in the South Atlantic and ends with an outlook on future perspectives with respect to the proxy described. Middle to late Miocene calcareous nannofossil data of ODP Site 1085 from the eastern South Atlantic off Namibia were analysed to document spatial and temporal changes in surface-ocean circulation, upwelling initiation, and associated productivity. Our data show that calcareous nannofossils constitute a significant part of the carbonate fraction throughout the investigated interval from 12.5 to 7.7 million years (Ma). Highest numbers of calcareous nannofossils (up to 38,000x10^6 nannofossils g^-^1 sediment) were observed during the intervals 9.9 to 9.7 and 8.7 to 8.0 Ma. These elevated numbers of calcareous nannofossils may generally be linked to the initiation of upwelling at about 10 Ma in the studied region. In contrast, diminished numbers of calcareous nannoplankton, as in the interval 9.6 to 9.0 Ma, probably characterise time intervals of weaker productivity resulting in a decrease of nannofossil carbonate contents in the sediments of Site 1085. This decrease in nannofossil production could be one possible explanation for the major CaCO"3 depression in between 9.6 and 9.0 Ma. Coccoliths of the genus Reticulofenestra are the most abundant taxa. Their occurrences are characterised by changes in the investigated time interval. In addition, Coccolithus pelagicus, Calcidiscus leptoporus and Umbilicosphaera spp. contribute a common part of the assemblage. Calcareous nannofossils account for more than half of the carbonate, with peak contribution up to 80% at 8.8 Ma.

David's relationship with Melissa adds further sinister complications. His involvement with his adopted Aboriginal relatives is something that could only happen to David. Superstition, sex, viagra and schizophrenia will enthrall the reader as the story races to its hilarious ending.

Trevor Tilka's farraginous tale of David Lyon's trials and tribulations is unpigeonholeable. Well written, the story races along with the determination of a scud missile. If only David had stopped to smell the roses he may not have found himself in such a pickle, but then, of course, we would not have such an invigorating entertainment.

'Farrago of Lies' is not a thriller, mystery, horror, romance or fantasy fiction - it is all of these. In a class of its own, a book for blokes, rather than sheilas, it is a good ole yarn, spoiling the reader with images, such as: 'I shook his hand; it felt damp and squashy like four sausages that had spent the night out of the fridge.' And: 'The red paint had faded and lifted like sunburnt skin on the narrow, semi-detached old place.'
Set in modern-day Western Australian, the story takes us on a roller-coaster ride with pivotal character 'Cousin Priapus' - that's all I'm gunna say... It highlights dysfunctional relationships, ancient Aboriginal ceremonies, and the unfolding raillery between characters, adding layer upon layer to the plot. There is plenty of conflict and action, and Trevor Tilka's sense of place is realistic. As a West Australian I can vouch for the outback heat: 'Eggs could fry on the ironstone outcrops.'
Psychotic HD wars with David's better nature taking him own paths our secret self may envy. David is the luckiest (he wins lotto and discovers gold) unluckiest character you're ever likely to read about, his fortunes and misfortunes beggar belief. At times you feel sympathy for David, while as other times you feel as Warren did at the end of the book: 'You had it coming, pal.'
'Farrago of Lies' is an unpredictable, at times bizarre, story...
