Book Description
Effective management of taxable accounts and portfolios rarely gets the attention it deserves from investment managers and advisers, often leaving investors with a larger-than-necessary tax bite. Tax-Aware Investment Management details new research, new analytic tools, and new thinking that can change that. This book punctures received wisdom and dispels misconceptions about how to account for tax effects; how to allocate assets; how and when to buy, sell, and rebalance; and how to communicate with clients and with other professionals involved in managing their assets. Douglas Rogers, widely considered the authority in this growing field, details the trading strategies and fund evaluation criteria essential to the task and presents critical considerations for investment managers. He also covers the expanding area of separate accounts.
Customer Reviews:
Tax Aware Investing doesn't need to be an oxymoron.......2007-07-10
I have yet to meet a prudent investor that thinks the government would do a better job of spending the money that the investor has accumulated, than they would do spending it themselves.
Doug Rogers' Tax-Aware Investment Management guide is timely. Doug gives you questions to ask your advisor. He provides a historical prospective while injecting humor. Doug even synthesizes the implications of taxation on investment results in a readable fashion.
Wall Street serves institutions (they live in world of relative "better than the benchmark or at least awfully darn close to it so they can keep their job" performance evaluation.
Private clients are often sold what institutions bought 5 or 10 years ago. The individual investor's best interests would be better served by thinking about this topic before, during and after they invest. You can only spend what you have after tax, after fee. I suggest you invest some time in thinking about the wisdom that Doug shares.
Importance of Tax Aware Investing Brought to the Forefront.......2006-03-08
This book could/should be used as a handbook for investment professionals considering tax aware investing. Doug has compiled years of research, insight and practice into a concise "manual" to shed some light on this complicated, and ever-changing aspect of investment management. Billions of dollars are needlessly lost each year from investors' portfolios because investment professionals fail to consider the impact of taxes when constructing and managing investment portfolios.
The book is very well written and organized. Hopefully, more people will realize the importance of taxes on portfolio performance and be drawn to firm's who can add value by having the knowledge and the ability to "play the game". This is especially true in a low return environment where the tax burden can have a meaningful impact in overall returns.

Dispelling the myth that it takes big money to make big money, Motley Fool writer Jeff Fischer champions direct investing, showing how individual investors can build substantial wealth with relatively small outlays of cash. Starting with as little as $50, an investor can purchase stock directly from a company, thereby avoiding intermediary charges incurred by using a broker. Fischer then explains how money compounds so that even small monthly investments can become significant nest eggs. In a section titled "How Do I Become a Millionaire?" he lists several ways to do so: "Begin with $500, save $1,200 annually, or $100 a month, and earn 15% per year. In 33 years, you'll have over $1 million." Or "Begin broke, save $2,400 a year, or $200 monthly, earn the stock market's historic 11% annual return, and in 36 years you'll have more than one million clams." Fischer presents basic investing principles here--a little over time becomes a lot--but like a typical Fool, he does so in a lighthearted, easy-to-understand fashion. The bulk of the book (300-plus pages), however, focuses on listings for more than 1,000 direct-investment plans, including company contact information, investing schedules, minimum and maximum investment amounts, and miscellaneous selling info. (For example, Roslyn Bancorp Inc.: "Sells within 10 bus. days, by mail, at avg. price, for $10 + comm.") A good resource for the cash-light beginning investor. --Rob McDonald
Book Description
Jeff Fischer, manager of The Motley Fool's DRP (dividend reinvestment plan) portfolio, explains why direct investing is a cost-effective method for investors of all levels. He provides step-by-step instructions for getting started and guidance on everything from selecting great stocks to handling related taxes.

They DId Not Hold Up In The Crash.......2003-01-16
They loved Enron at the peak. Their methods are questionable.
Excellent resource of information........2001-07-09
The first third of this book is detailed information about how to analyze stock numbers, ratios, etc. That's quite valuable information and key to developed a system of analysis to figure out the stocks in which you want to invest.
What surprised me was the *rest* of the book! They compiled a comprehensive list of hundreds and hundreds of companies which have dividend reinvestment and related plans. This made calling those companies for more info so easy! So easy to get started with investing my savings for the long term. BUY THIS -- you won't regret it.
Helped me start saving!.......2000-08-21
Great book for a starting investor who wants to save money on brokerage fees! I had zero knowledge on DRIP's and DSP's. This book helped me get started setting up an account and in picking a company to invest in long-term. This is the best investing book I have ever read. Jeff Fischer's writing style is comprehensable and fun to read. I loved it!
Comprehensive and concise, too.......1999-09-27
This book covers everything to get started in the stock market with whatever money you have, and it's concise enough too that it doesn't waste your time with extra words. A very finely written book. The investment plan information in the appendix is nice to have in print.
Lots of good info.......1999-09-14
Lots of good info about basic investing for beginners, but the last half of the book is a list of all companies which offer DSPs or DRiPs and anyone can find this out for themselves as it is a matter of public record.

Customer Reviews:
A well written book for beginners........1999-04-29
The author writes very well, but all too often the advice is a little thin. I liked his approach to handling money but for real practical advice I found another book more useful: "How To Invest $50 to $5,000" by Dunnan. However, both make excellent presents for young and/or inexperienced investors and savers.
Intelligent advice for thoughtful investors........1999-03-17
Lowell's writing voice is engaging, intelligent, and refreshingly free of finance jargon. This is a primer for people who have more on their minds than their mutual fund returns. One of the very few books of this genre I could actually relate to, as someone with a healthy skepticism towards the American dream of riches and retirement. Written uncondescendingly and with attention to the often ignored but important issues of investors' social responsibilities, and if it is in fact possible to do well and do good at the same time. One of the few books of this genre that doesn't alienate me.
okay.........1998-01-30
I liked it, and it was helpful, except it wasn't geared to COMPLETE beginers who have had zero experience to investing... I would have liked there to be a section telling you exactly what all the numbers (like in a wall st. journal) mean, and how they relate to a company... The glossary was very thin...

Should become a classic!!!.......2001-04-30
Using this book for over two years, I've found all the Messiers and learnt a whole lot from this book. The book starts off with briefly introducing the pre-requisites to stargazing, and the geometric estimation method for locating the deep-sky using a Telrad. The book also tells the story of Charles Messier, and the origins of the Messier Marathon. He then takes the reader on a tour of all the Messier objects. Since this book has its focus on the Messier Marathon, the sequence of the objects is based on his observing sequence during the Marathon. However, as Harvard points out, this book does not necessarily have to be used during a Marathon and can be used any time to locate any of the Messier objects. The finder charts proved to be extremely useful, and I found this book becoming the book I refer to the most. The advantage is, I don't have to flip through other star maps looking for the Messier objects I'd like to observe. Its all included in this book. Therefore, I used this book more than my star atlas while observing the Messier objects. There is a little bit of inaccuracy with some of the charts. For example, in the chart for finding M75, I found I had to extend a little further than the distance from the mouth of the teapot to the lower corner of its handle away from tau Sag. to get to M75. Perhaps it was my problem of not using a powered finder (only the Telrad), but I had to try 5 times before I was compelled to move my scope little further east and north when the dim glow of M75 slid into view. This situation is actually clearly demonstrated in any star atlas, M75 is definitely a little further than the estimate.(I did very careful measurements on a printout of a few star chart program and Harvard's estimation method got to 0.6 to 1 degree from M75 depending on the angle deviation from the gamma Sag. - tau Sag. line, so I'm guessing some people may have troubles) Nevertheless, this is a VERY minor complaint for Harvard's method is based on estimation. Getting as near to the object as possible with the simplest method is what matters. My suggestion to any similar situation is to use a star atlas beside this book too to help with objects that don't seem to show up on first or second attempt. Furthermore, if the object is not in view, do scan around a little (which Harvard did mention). In a real Messier Marathon, don't panic (as I did =) and keep in mind that the less detailed charts are mainly for estimation. Overall, an exceptional book, beautifully written and educating. A book that deserves to be on the bookshelves of all amateur astronomers!
A must-have for serious Messier searchers........2000-09-25
This is an extremely helpful book. I rate it among the very best for helping in your Messier Object search: At the April 2000 Messier marathon, I found 75 objects, and was on schedule to find 105, but I grew too tired to continue. On a recent star party in September, 2000, I found 45 objects before midnight, thanks largely to this book. Buy it while you still can!
The Guide for finding the Messier Objects.......2000-08-08
After trying run my first Messier marathon with charts that I had prepared myself, I wish I had had this book with me that night. I would have seen alot more. Using this book, I have able to locate many objects that I had not been able to find before with certainty.
This book is excellent resource that I now take along with my telescope to every star party. The charts and object sketches are well oriented to the practicing amateur astronomer. Also covered are telescope calibration, observing techniques, and site selection. The only drawback to this book that I have found so far has been that it is not printed on waterproof paper. So, I had to order another copy to cut up and laminate.
Best Intro Book to Finding the Messier Objects.......2000-07-11
This book is exceptional for the beginning backyard astronomer. I found 25 objects in one weekend alone using this book. I'm up to 95 objects total with no doubt in my mind that the book will allow me to find the remaining 15 objects. In dark skies, the Telrad finder charts work extremely well. Over a dozen times I have literally been able to line up the Telrad finder per the book's illustrations and look into the eyepiece and see the desired target. In light polluted areas, where I do most of my observing and where the Telrad is not quite as useful, the star charts in the book provide just the right detail to find the target by either star hopping with a conventional finder or moving along lines of constant declination or ascension relative to a known star. Well worth the low $20 price tag.
Excellent guide for the Messiers.......1999-12-16
this book is written with one purpose in mind-to get the reader(observer)through the Messier objects utilizing various, and well explained, star hopping techniques combined with in-scale drawings of the objects within their given constellations. It also has some very useful techniques for ligning up a telrad type instrument, calibrating the finder and eyepiece, as well as providing an observer's log for the objects and the Messier catalog. Great book and more than worth the money. Being an "advanced beginner" I have found its techniques easy to follow leading to some incredibly successful observations of these beautiful objects. I only wish it included the Caldwell Catalog, but that may have diluted its very narrow and detailed focus on the Messier objects. Highly recommended!

Book Description
The Most Beautiful Molecule
"The molecule, buckminsterfullerene, is beautiful physically and intellectually. Its qualities, and even some of its properties, can be appreciated instantly and intuitively by nonscientists. Its uniqueness is bound to lead to novel applications-superconductivity is the leading contender at the moment."
"The commercial potential of buckminsterfullerene has heightened the excitement and controversy in recent years, while the exact nature of the discovery process in 1985 has been the subject of a heated feud between the British and American scientists involved."-Hugh Aldersey-Williams
Ten years ago, the discovery of buckminsterfullerene, a previously unknown form of carbon, stunned the scientific community, as much for the discovery itself as for the manner in which it came about. In the words of author Hugh Aldersey-Williams, it was an example of "classic bootleg science". The work was done on the back of other, funded projects, and when time would allow. Yet its commercial implications are probably immense.
Now, with objectivity and insight, The Most Beautiful Molecule recounts the events leading up to this momentous discovery and chronicles the ongoing, often frenzied aftermath. Hugh Aldersey-Williams leads us on a thrilling expedition to the very forefront of modern chemistry research.
Houston, Texas, 1985. Two industrious chemists discover a previously unknown form of carbon and christen it buckminsterfullerene, for its striking resemblance to American architect Richard Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes. This unusual molecule-also known as the buckyball-is composed of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a hollow sphere, with hexagonal and pentagonal configurations similar to those found on a soccer ball. Its near-perfect symmetry is just one reason why scientists have since dubbed it "the most beautiful molecule."
The discovery of buckminsterfullerene-by American physicist and chemist Richard Smalley and British physical chemist Harry Kroto-rocked the scientific community. After all, generations believed graphite and diamond to be the only pure forms of carbon. How had this third form gone undetected?
In fact, the actual discovery was merely the beginning of an intense-and ongoing-quest to master this newest form of the most basic of elements. Confirmation would take five years and launch an unprecedented flood of investigation and investment. The unique physical structure of buckminsterfullerene-a "cage" into which atoms of other materials may be inserted-had huge commercial potential and inspired scientists, industrial laboratories, and corporations alike. Backed by such giants as AT&T, DuPont, Exxon, and IBM, a highly competitive search for practical applications began-and continues. Possibilities range from the creation of a revolutionary rocket fuel to nanotechnology-the construction of microscopic "molecular machines"-to developments in the fight against AIDS.
Here, then, is a fascinating, multilayered look at one of the most important scientific findings of our time. The Most Beautiful Molecule is a brain-teasing detective story, a marvelously detailed, inside look at the workings of the scientific community, and an exciting contemplation of what lies ahead. From the forefront of research in modern chemistry, author Hugh Aldersey-Williams offers, in his own words, "a celebration of the intimate world of physical science and its practitioners."

Sammy Keyes and the Art of Deception.......2005-02-03
This book is perfect for mystery lovers.Sammy Keyes and the Art of Deception is riveting tale of suspense and revalation, a thrill ride that has all the elements of a classic: romance, action/adveture, comedy, and most importantly, mystery! I loved this book. It begs you to slow down and relish it's great quality. I belive Wendelin van Draanen outdid herself with an amazing book. Again!

The most beautiful molecule-The discovery of Bucky Ball.......2000-07-01
The book is exceedingly lucid in its style and very informative to all seekers of knowledge in the field of Fullerene Chemistry.Fullerene has the distinct place of being the molecule of the last century. Its applications being enormous are dealt with in an excellent way. "Nature"-a lover of symmetry is perhaps manifested as the black beauty in the form of C-60.What an insight the book provides for the prospective researchers in this discipline to seek more only to be found!
Field Goal: a pleasantly entertaining chemistry book.......1998-03-17
Having read many popular science books, this one is above average. All aspects of the discovery were well explained and references are extensive. Comparison with the cold fusion fiasco is appropriate, as the furor over these two scientific episodes were coincident. The petty fights and true believer mentality are present but tempered by appropriate scientific method, which went out the window quickly with cold fusion. Well written and enjoyable. If interested in cold fusion read Gary Taubes' Bad Science

Book Description
Isabelle Fortune could be the first woman President. She could do wonderful things for the world, if she could only get born. But her chosen parents are divorcing. Time is running out. At midnight Halloween Isabelle must choose a different life.
Lincoln Lightly is dead. As his angel leads him toward heaven, Lincoln meets the soul who would be his granddaughter, Isabelle. He volunteers to return as a ghost to help reunite his daughter, Jeanette, and her husband, Chris. It is October 1, 1973.
Only Lincoln's dog, Gershwin, can see and hear him. They encounter another ghost, Lightly's grandfather, Gockie. The old soldier has returned to stop a Vietnam Veteran, Lincoln's nephew Eddie, from destroying himself.
Jeanette shares a special bond with her cousins, Eddie and Anne Marie. The three must face their personal demons or be destroyed by them. Gershwin, loyal and eager to help, becomes the link between the ghosts and the living.
Reuniting Jeanette and Chris is not as easy as Lincoln thought. While Isabelle and the angel Mario watch from between this world and the next, Halloween's final hour approaches. Jeanette's choice will determine not only Isabelle's destiny, but also the fate of the world.
Customer Reviews:
delightfully lightly.......2003-11-20
A great light read. Never thought i'd find a talking dog a favorite character. For those "new agers" with a sense of humor, McKnight combines the ideas of contemporary spirituality with a fun tale.
A really good read.......2001-06-01
I thought that Once Over Lightly by Kathleen Therese McDaniel combined a unique blend of depth and humor to create a page-turning delightful story. The dog, Gershwin, is one of the best characters I have ever found in literature. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good book that leaves you thinking, but also smiling.

Customer Reviews:
A book for horse lovers.......2005-11-23
Marcia's life is just about perfect. Her job at Gatlin stables, a chance to conpete in horse shows, and the use of Once Over Lightly- one of the best Gatlin horses- are all dreams come true. Then Marcia meets hansome Barry Warwick and life isnt so perfect anymore. Why does he take an instent dislike to her? And could he be the one sabotaging her work? Maybe the only way to find out is to get to know him better.... I really enjoyed this book it was very sweet with a great ending.
