Book Description
Risk modeling is now a core skill for successful managers inside and outside finance. Alastair Day's Mastering Risk Modelling shows managers exactly how to build Excel-based models for identifying, quantifying and managing risk--models that provide clear, accurate decision-making guidance that can be used with confidence throughout the enterprise. An ideal follow-up to Day's bestselling Mastering Financial Modelling, the book brings together risk modeling theory and practice more effectively than ever before. Day presents extensive tips and methods for developing Excel-based risk applications--including practical guidance on designing models and layering complexity on top of basic models. His series of Excel templates will jumpstart your own modeling, eliminate the need to start from scratch, and provide powerful insights for improving any model. All models are provided on an accompanying CD-ROM.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book on Risk Modeling.......2005-02-22
I find the book extremely useful and it is a good supplement to standard textbooks on risk modeling. The book discusses the different principles of building models, and then explains how the same can be applied to risk modeling.
This book should not be treated as a stand-alone book on risk modeling and must be used as a supplement to some theoretical book on risk modeling.
If you already have the book on "Mastering Financial Modeling: by the same author, then you may not find this book as useful.
Bargin Bin Only.......2004-06-17
Mastering Risk Modelling has a few tricks and references that makes the book an excellent candidate for a bargain bin pickup. There is just enough information to make a newbie dangerous and not enough to add to the practioner's body of knowledge.
This book is not the place to start if you are new to spreadsheet modelling and/or risk modelling. The CD included is severely limited with the bulk of examples void of formulas and code. However, the book is not explicit enough to be a good "How To" and the risk methodologies are not explained in depth enough for a newbie to put into practice.
If you are a practitioner, you will find some nifty tricks, reminders, and some cut'n'paste vba that would take you ~15 min to write. However, the book is simply not sophisticated enough to put into practice.
The book is most suited to a recent MBA with some time on his/her hands to goof around in excel; an intern tasked with building a spreadsheet quickly; a practitioner that needs a jumpstart or wire frame for a task; or, perhaps, an accountant or finance geek that wants to understand business line concepts better.
Practical guide.......2003-12-04
The book covers a comprehensive aspect of everyday modelling requirements for practitioners. Since it is very dependent on Excel spreadsheet for all the modelling, having the sample template of the chapters on your PC will help a lot. Unfortunately, the CD that comes with the book cannot be install into my PC that runs on WinXP. Error message of not enough disk space will come up upon installation (my PC has 8G of free space)......sad. Hope the publisher will come up with a patch for the CD.

Book Description
Most amateur astronomers yearn to observe more frequently. Many of them, however, live in urban and highly developed suburban areas that are heavily light polluted. Due to this light pollution, they are under the impression that deep sky objects—nebulae, galaxies, star clusters—are either invisible or not worth viewing from home. This book describes the many objects that can be seen in a bright urban sky, and shows the city or suburban astronomer how to observe object after object, season after season.
This book covers the "why," "how," and "what" of astronomy under light-polluted skies. The prospective city-based observer is told why to observe from home (there are hundreds of spectacular objects to be seen from the average urban site), how to observe the city sky (telescopes, accessories, and moderns techniques), and what to observe. About 50% of the book is devoted to describing "tours" of the sky, with physical and observational descriptions, at-the-eyepiece drawings, and photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for City Dwelling Amatuer Astronomers!.......2007-02-16
Living in the South Florida Peninsula, you get used to light pollution. In 2005, I purchased my first "real" telescope and soon learned how badly light polluted South Florida really is. Although a trip to a dark sky site is only 60 miles away, I live in the suburbs outside of Miami and wanted to take advantage of my decent sized back yard. My sky's limiting magnitude is around 4, the sky towards the north is a grayish white haze where only Polaris is visible and the big dipper if high enough in the sky. The rest of the sky is a little better but after 2 years of limited success in searching for DSOs, I decided to look for help.
The Urban Astronomer's Guide may be the help I require. The book is well written and easy to follow. This book was written where beginners as well as intermediate amateur astronomers would find it interesting.
Part I of the book entitled: Telescopes and Techniques covers everything from the why one would want to observe from the city to the writers experience with types of telescopes and needed techniques to beat the light pollution blues. Mr. Mollise explains the advantages in large and short focal length telescopes and which objects benefit from either type. The author discusses in great detail the differences between the different types of Light-Pollution Reduction Filters, eyepieces, finders, computer software, print atlases, etc.
The book discuses techniques which experienced amateurs may be familiar with but beginners and intermediates may have heard have but not understand completely. Things like the use of averted vision, "jiggling" the telescope to tease out details in faint objects. Dark Adaptation is discussed and it's importance, all invaluable lessons that every amateur astronomer should learn.
Part II of the book entitled: A Walking Tour of the Cosmos is what makes this book a keeper. This section of the book goes over examples of objects that are perfect for city observation. The four chapters as you might imagine are broken up by season, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Each season gives 4 lists of objects that the Author feels are viewable for the given season and time. An example of such a tour is Spring's Tour 1. Objects included in this tour are M94, M51, M106, M63, M81, M82, M101, M97, M3 and the Double Star Cor Caroli.
Each object is discussed in detail with the author's notes from his personal journal. Mr. Mollise discusses the use of filters that can enhance a particular object, magnification that should be used to view certain objects, and what you should expect to see at the eyepiece. The author also includes his personal illustrations of objects he's included in his journals, which gives you a good idea of what you should be able to see in the eyepiece. The illustrations are very good and to me are much more useful than the Hubble type images commonly seen in astronomy books.
The only thing I found a little odd about this book would be the inclusion of such difficult to see objects as M1 and M51. The author even writes: "Sadly, I have to admit that in the city it (M51) is something of a dud." He also writes: "you have to be satisfied just to say you've seen it (M1)." These are just two of several objects the author himself confesses are extremely challenging, if not impossible to view from a light-polluted location. Why not focus on objects that are less challenging? Maybe have one object at the end of each tour that might be a challenge.
This is not to say the book does not reward the reader with some surprisingly easy to see objects. I was recently treated to a "hidden treasure" in the open cluster M46. As it turns out there is a small planetary nebulae (NGC2438) within this semi-impressive cluster that makes M46 a showpiece object in my opinion. If not for this book, I may not have spent much more than 10 minutes viewing M46. I now find myself going back to it time after time just as I do with M42 and M45.
Overall the book is a good read. This book in written for beginner's with some experience and can be useful to intermediate amateurs who might not be getting the most from their telescopes due to light pollution issues within the Urban setting. Part II in particular I've found invaluable and it will definitely keep me coming back for more.
Indispenisble definitive guide for citybound deep-sky enthusiasts!.......2006-09-02
This is a work that has been long overdue. A book on urban astronomy that focuses soley on deep-sky objects, and practical recommendations for how to view them, equipment and techniques. A most comprehensive list, more than any other book of its kind. But by no means the only things that can be seen, there are more than in this book (as I have discovered). But by showing what you can see, you can try for more.
Another quality book from Rod.......2006-07-05
Rod writes with an authority about many subjects at hand, but his style is very approachable and appreciated by us amateurs. His subject matter is applicable to my Miami (Florida) skies and I am proud to display this book among the many astronomy books that I own.

Outstanding Repeat read value.......2006-07-04
This is an excellent book for anyone who lives in light polluted skies (OK, this includes EVERYONE EAST of the Mississippi river, and a good part of the rest of the civilized world).
Rod's approach and writing style, make this a good book for amateur astronomer's of all levels.
The first half of the book is filled with tips, and ideas, and how-to's that are worth the price of the book alone, all designed to help everyone get the most out of their skies no matter how much light pollution they have. Nothing will make the light pollution go away, so Rod's book is the perfect inspiration for those of us who feel like giving up when we look up and see so few stars from our urban or suburban locations.
The second half holds the key to making this an outstanding book for generations to come, because Rod goes into detail with personal observation's and descriptions about a large number of objects that those of us with "darkness-challenged" skies will still be able to enjoy. All of this gives Rod's book a very high repeat read value, since Rod covers objects for all seasons, and his Southern wit, charm, and humor combine to make this a 5 stars book.
Book Description
Designed for amateur astronomers living in or near large urban centers. It offers a comprehensive and thorough discussion of astronomical observing, including the observation of our nearest neighbors in the heavens as well as those farther away--some constant and some only appearing every hundred years or so. Topical coverage includes discussions of the problem of seeing the night sky in cities, the wonders of naked eye astronomy, the ``seeing'' instruments necessary for observation in an urban setting, planning an observing session in a city park and looking at the moon, planets, spacecraft, meteorites, comets, solar and lunar eclipses, unusual phenomena such as variable and double stars and the sun. The final chapter stresses the importance of astronomy as an invaluable educational tool and presents a number of projects that can be performed by the urban amateur astronomer.

Tailored for City Observing.......2005-10-24
Written by a professional astronomer who headed the NYC Parks dept metro astronomy program, this book details the types of objects and techniques for viewing them not found in any general amateur astronomy text.
A text for the beginning city observer, Matloff's book concentrates on subjects such as how to find your way around the sky when there are only a few dozen or less stars visible; what objects are are visible under such conditions; and deals with the Moon Sun and bright planets at leagth as these objects are the meat on the urban observer's plate.
Altogether, this book is recommended to those city dwellers who have a hesitant interest in astronomy, wondering just what can be seen under severely light polluted skies. Turns out there is a great deal after all and Matloff makes for a good beginning guide.
If looking for a guide to urban observing, SKIP THIS ONE........2004-02-21
This book mostly consists of introductory general information about astronomy. The gimmick of this book that gives it its title is the automatic insertion of the word "urban" in front of the word "astronomer", "astronomy", or "observer". The star charts included in the book are among the worst ever printed and depict all the stars as the same brightness. Don't waste your money on this one (I bought mine used).
Book Description
Informal, effective undergraduate-level text introduces vibrational and electronic spectroscopy, presenting applications of group theory to the interpretation of UV, visible, and infrared spectra without assuming a high level of background knowledge. 200 problems with solutions. Numerous illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
The best.......2007-07-24
I bought this book about half way through my postgraduate studies in Physical chemistry, then immediately kicked myself for not buying it earlier. If you're a bit rusty in QM, as I was, then the chapter on QM is worth the price of admission alone, the same could really be said for all of the 5 chapters (Group Theory, QM, Vibrations, MO Theory and Electronic Transitions) though as they are all clear, well constructed, with nice problems (and solutions for most). Great introduction for any aspiring Physical Chemist.
Excellent spectroscopy book.......2007-05-17
There was really no need for my short review to convince anyone interested or even marginally active in the field of molecular spectroscopy that the SYMMETRY AND SPECTROSCOPY-Introduction to Vibrational and Electronic Spectroscopy by D.C. Harris and M.D. Bertolucci is an excellent presentation of the underlying physical principles, the laws and parameters involved in the measurement and, above all and in accordance with the title, the involvement of symmetry on the appearance of virbrational and electronic spectra.
Recommended, in my opinion, to both students and tutors, and to those interested in the application or the theoretical part of the aforementioned spectroscopic fields.
loved this book .......2007-03-29
I used this book to supplement my molecular spec. course many years ago. As others have noted - very friendly in its tone.
For other classic books in this area look at:
1. Introduction to Molecular Spectroscopy by Gordon M. Barrow, McGraw-Hill, 1962 (You should avoid his more commonly found book with a similar title: The Structure of Molecules: An Introduction to Molecular Spectroscopy, published by W. A. Benjamin, 1964. This book is too basic.)
2. Introduction to Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy by William A. Guillory, Allyn and Bacon, 1977
Check out my other reviews for other chem books.
Great book........2007-03-17
Got this book to study for a Spectroscopy of Optical Materials course and it was wonderfull. Easy to follow and complete.
Great book for a difficult subject.......2006-02-26
Harris and Bertolucci do a great job of covering every detail needed to know to understand the subject. Good guide to confusing subject.
Book Description
This text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students guides the reader through a smooth progression from the most elementary ideas of molecular orbital theory to an understanding of the electronic structure, geometry, and reactivity of large molecules. It starts with simple molecules and proceeds to relatively large organometallic complexes. The slant is theoretical, but in the last chapter the authors strengthen the link between theory and experiment. Focusing on basic concepts, the authors take a qualitative approach, which enables this text to fill a void in the undergraduate curriculum. The book is intended as a core or supplementary text in an advanced chemistry course.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best introductions to molecular orbitals .......2006-11-18
The uncertainty of electron translocation around the atom is a very pressing issue. We currently do not have the means either in resources or technology to devise an efficient way of mapping the exact location of an electron at any given time, during the course of a reaction.
This makes exploring organic chemistry somewhat inconvienient, since the four major types of reactions (addition, substitution, translocation and elimination) observed within it deal directly with the translocation of electrons.
When students are taught about hybridizaton and reaction mechanisms, the theory of Molecular Orbitals is usually just a one lecture discussion. In second semester organic chemistry it normally omitted and when one goes into specialized units such as heterocyclics, carbohydrates and pericyclics, it becomes a prominent contender.
However many students get intimidated by the Integrals, mapping and differentials involved in explaining MO. Furthermore, most dont even seem to have a grasp of FMO theory even after the unit. This is usually due to bad textbooks and inarticulate, incoherent lecturers.
I was a student who had very little study in maths, I had not touched any maths apart from simple algebra (ends at regression) for almost 4 years. I was then thrown into the fires of pericyclic chemistry with a very brief reference textbook and an incompetent lecturer. I looked at many available quantum mechanics books, from Ian Fleming, to Atkins, and even Strettweiser's. However all of them were only successful in intimidating me and buckling my confidence in understanding MOs.
That is, until I found this particular book. IT ASSUMES NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ON BONDING AND IN MATHEMATICS. I have read this book thoroughly and I love it. It is probably the greatest book in my collection for organic chemistry/physics. The book explains atomic orbitals and starts off from the same footing as first year general chemistry. It later develops this knowledge into Molecular orbital theory.
It empowers the reader to go further into Frontier Molecular Orbitals, and acts as a primer to understanding Ian Flemings FMO book, which is the best of its genre. This book is a bit more generalized and therefore is usefull to both organic chemists and inorganic chemists alike.
It is filled with lots of examples, and useful exam styled questions which cause the reader to develop a better understanding of the topic at large.
To summarize:
THIS BOOK IS THE BEST NON MATHEMATICAL PRIMER FOR THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT IN DEVELOPING THEIR KNOWLEDGE FROM ORBITAL HYBRIDIZATION TO MOLECULAR ORBITAL THEORY AND FURTHER ITS APPLICATION TO FRONTIER MOLECULAR ORBITAL THEORY. IT REQUIRES ABSOLUTELY NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ON THE TOPIC, AND IS WRITTEN IN A STUDENT FRIENDLY MANNER (WITHOUT THE NEEDLESS FORMALIZATION).
A Thorough Treatment of MO Yet Not The Most Easiest to Read.......2000-08-28
This book introduces the ideas behind electronic structures and how these structures affect the overal molecular orbitals. A sustantial content of this book discusses mechanics of assembling reasonable molecular orbitals for different geometries. Begin with the periodic trends of atoms, the treatment MO progresses to many-electrons systems and complicated molecules. It also emphasizes the role of symmetry in forming appropriate (allowed) molecular orbitals. The second-third of the book discusses the use of fragment orbital method in assembling MO for linear, triangular, tetrahedral, and hexagonal system. The text concludes with application of MO to chemical reactivity pattern. Examples include cycloaddition, aromatic transition state, conjugated pi system and the Markovnikov's Rule. This book would be appropriate for students who have finished one year of organic chemistry and at least one semester of inorganic chemistry that focuses on chemical structure and bonding. Not an easy text for first year student.
Stairway to MO.......1999-03-19
Most undergraduate chemistry courses talk about MO, but they really don't care the audience. "The rest is silence." But this kindly written book by Jean, literally a student-oriented book, says not so much things, but we can talk about MO in effect. If you really want to know what your professor is saying in your chemistry class, this book is indispensable! Without mathematics, you can get the feeling for MO. Answer to excercise is a wonderful bonus, too.

Book Description
Do you like reading those hilarious tabloid news stories about Aliens, Bigfoot, dumb crooks, super-powered household pets, and incredible but true current event stories from tabloids? Do you also hate all the raunchy pictures, perverted stories, Hollywood gossip, and ads for implants, piercing and psychics? Me too.
Instead of paying $3 to wade through all that garbage (that your kids will read also) to get 2 or 3 amusing stories an issue, why not get 40 funny, bite-size tales that can be consumed in a few minutes each? These are laughs you can share with family, friends, and co-workers. Pastor Pete, Sister Sally, and even your in-laws won't be embarrassed.
The 4 short stories require 10-30 minutes per read. A Real Life Superhero is the inspirational account of a kind-hearted loser who always dreamed of being a superhero. Would people ever appreciate his life of good deeds?
Not Just a Cat may be just a tad out there. The protagonist suffers a debilitating on-the-job back injury, which results in lying around the house, and taking pain pills complements of Workman's Compensation. After a few months, he thinks his cat is talking to him. All's well that ends well in this tale of temporary delusional hijacks.
Missy's Bear is a refreshing (compared to my other stories) bedtime story I made up for my own daughters when they were young. A precocious little girl befriends a talking bear.
There you have it folks. 44 original stories to keep you chuckling through the day.
