Microscopic Simulation of Financial Markets: From Investor Behavior to Market Phenomena
Haim Levy , Moshe Levy , and Sorin Solomon Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0124458904 |
Book Description
Microscopic Simulation (MS) uses a computer to represent and keep track of individual ("microscopic") elements in order to investigate complex systems which are analytically intractable. A methodology that was developed to solve physics problems, MS has been used to study the relation between microscopic behavior and macroscopic phenomena in systems ranging from those of atomic particles, to cars, animals, and even humans. In finance, MS can help explain, among other things, the effects of various elements of investor behavior on market dynamics and asset pricing. It is these issues in particular, and the value of an MS approach to finance in general, that are the subjects of this book. The authors not only put their work in perspective by surveying traditional economic analyses of investor behavior, but they also briefly examine the use of MS in fields other than finance.Customer Reviews:
A good review of the topic - but not enough focus.......2000-12-20
The author's research is very interesting and promising. The book reviews similar microsimulation attempts by others.
However, there is no guidance as to the implementation of microsimulation studies in finance. The eauations/models of finance are easily found elsewhere .... but how do you turn them into a simulation project (?)...

"Conferencing Handbook: The New Real Justice Training Manual" by Terry O'Connell, Ben Wachtel and Ted Wachtel is a clearly conceived procedural guide to coordinating and facilitating conferences, covering the process of selecting cases, inviting participants, making preparations and running the conference itself. It is useful to anyone who wants to learn to facilitate conferences in school, criminal justice and other settings.
The handbook begins with a chapter called "The Script," which presents the conference script and discusses its origins, the psychological and sociological theory used to develop the script, and the reasons why one would use a script.
Chapter 2, "When to Run a Conference," discusses criteria for deciding whether to run a conference, who should facilitate conferences, needs of victims, and when a conference is not appropriate.
Chapter 3, "Conference Preparation," provides detailed instruction on choosing a time and place for a conference, selecting and inviting participants, developing a seating plan, and making preparations.
Chapter 4, "Running the Conference," takes the reader through the conference process, from setting up before the conference and seating participants to reaching an agreement and closing the conference. Each section of the script is explained with suggestions on how to handle various situations that arise.
Chapter 5, "Establishing a Conferencing Program," offers advice to program coordinators, complemented by a plethora of sample literature and forms from actual conferencing programs, including Central City Neighborhoods Partnership (Minnesota), Piedmont Dispute Resolution Center (Virginia), and Hawke's Bay Restorative Justice Te Puna Wai Ora (New Zealand).
The last chapter, "Restorative Practices -- Beyond the Formal Conference," provides a framework, examples and practical suggestions for incorporating the language and philosophy of the conference script in a range of less formal restorative interventions.
The 168-page Handbook includes several illustrative diagrams, a preparation checklist, a conference seating planner, and data forms for record-keeping and conference evaluation. Quotes in the side margins highlight key points from the text.

The Art of Writing Reasonable Organic Reaction Mechanisms
Robert B. Grossman Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
Accessories:
ASIN: 0387954686 |
Book Description
Intended for students of intermediate organic chemistry, this text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. The discussion is organized by types of mechanisms and the conditions under which the reaction is executed, rather than by the overall reaction as is the case in most textbooks. The treatment emphasizes unifying principles, showing how common mechanisms link seemingly disparate reactions. Each chapter discusses common mechanistic pathways and suggests practical tips for drawing them. Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and "common error alerts" are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. Each chapter is capped by a large problem set.
The author has drawn on his own research and the current literature to ensure that appropriate attention is given to topics across the range of modern organic chemistry. The text is unique in its inclusion of a chapter on reactions mediated or catalyzed by transition metals, an area in which mechanistic understanding is now essential. Relatively new topics such as olefin metathesis and cycloaromatization are covered without giving short shrift to more traditional areas such as carbonyl chemistry. The text assumes a basic knowledge of organic chemistry. It can be used either in a formal course or by students working on their own, and will be particularly useful for graduate students studying for qualifying examinations. It will also be useful to students and researchers in biochemistry, pharmacology, and inorganic chemistry.
"This is an excellent and well-presented work.... The author ... has succeeded well in treating the central ideas of reactivity and selectivity in an integrated whole. The clear style of writing, the well chosen examples, and the ... concise summaries of the main points provided at the end of each chapter should enable the reader to easily consolidate what has been learned.... The book is indeed a little work of art."
-- Jens Hartung, Angewandte Chemie International Edition
"I have taught a one-credit course with this book for three years, and, uniformly, the students have rated this book highly for its clarity and for the scope of the problems. ... This book does an excellent job at its stated goal: 'to teach students to come up with reasonable mechanisms for reactions they have never seen before.'"
-- Amy Howell, Synthesis
"I have just finished my first year of graduate studies in organic chemistry at Duke University. I just wanted to let you know how much your book got me through the past year of course work.... When it came to mechanisms, I found the clarity and thoroughness I needed only in your book. It was impressive how you were able to present so much information in a clear and comprehensive manner yet keep the book so manageable in size. In addition to the text, I also was able to benefit from the problems.... Great practice!! The on-line answers are much better than looking up answers by reference.... I am reading it again this summer in preparation for my preliminary exam next spring."

Writing Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry (Advanced Organic Chemistry)
Audrey Miller , and Philippa H. Solomon Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0124967124 |
Book Description
Writing Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry, Second Edition, is an invaluable guide to charting the movements of atoms and electrons in the reactions of organic molecules. Miller and Solomon illustrate that understanding organic reactions is based on applying general principles rather than the rote memorization of unrelated processes, and, in turn, emphasize that writing mechanisms is a practical method of applying knowledge of previously encountered reactions and reaction conditions to new reactions. Students and research chemists alike will find this book useful in providing a method of organizing and synthesizing an oftentimes overwhelming quantity of information into a set of general principles and guidelines for determining and describing organic reaction mechanisms.Customer Reviews:
