2 out of 5 stars Bad philosophy, bad science--a waste of time, money, and sighs........2007-05-30

As someone who spent much of his high school years reading books on cosmology (do Stephen Hawking and Brian Greene ring a bell?), one year doing physics in college, the last two years doing math (often involving problems dealing with the physical), and as an absolutely pedantic and skeptical person who likes to philosophize about phenomena studied by science, I must say that I have far better qualifications for writing a book such as this than Mr. Jones does. He readily admits in the "about the author" section, in so many words, that he has absolutely no background in cosmology--and, I infer, the physical sciences--beyond the material he supposedly ravenously pored through as a youth. And boy does it show.

From reading just the "about the author" section, agaain, you find out that Mr. Jones is not a person appreciative of authority whatsoever--apparently even the scientific authority of people who have actually done the math and experiments isn't enough for him. I have only read into Chapter 3, but it looks like, throughout the book, he's just going to be dismissing left and right almost every scientifically accepted viewpoint, theory, and theoretical construct of the modern age that explains what he does little more than stab at in the dark attempting to do. Another reviewer used the term "unapologetic"--it really is apt.

Mr. Jones feels justified, almost right off the bat, in introducing this weird sort of omnipresent energy, which he calls "origo". From lawless nothing came origo, he says, and then he has the reader go through mental convolutions to get from origo everywhere with no special locations to particles, which have locations. Of all things, this happens from THE PRESSURE OF MOVING ORIGO. But if it's everywhere, then there is equal pressure everywhere; and it has nowhere to move, since it is everywhere; and as far as I know (I must emphasize this qualifier; it's been a while since I've read material where such concepts would be discussed), energy can not exert pressure on energy. This creation part baffled me, and I've read about quantum mechanics and understood it better sometimes, mind you. He doesn't even utilize quantum fluctuations to arrive at particles. Is it even possible to test for this "origo" if everything is made of it? This isn't science. Science and philosophy parted ways for a reason. It's far too easy to lose one's mind to baseless musings in the latter.

Here's a bad thought "experiment" he employs, or at least implicitly or explicitly desires the reader to employ. Imagine two objects and be mindful of their gravitational attraction. NOTHING ELSE EXISTS. Mr. Jones is the first person I know of who says that the space in between the objects is not empty. He considers gravity as occupying space.

I just can't convey how much hubris this man has, to self-proclaimedly FIX what all modern scientists in the relevant fields have allegedly gotten wrong. He employs bad philosophy and completely lacks even the smallest qualifications to speak with any sort of authority on these subjects. I give him one star out of necessity and the second star because Logical Universe is a book of mildly interesting ponderings. A third star would deceive people into thinking this book a quality purchase. Save your time and money, and save scientists and science educators the effort of correcting the mistaken views of one more layman.

Reviewed by Susan Pettrone for Reader Views (11/06)

Author Michael Jones opens minds with his interesting book "Logical Universe." It reaches deep within taken-for-granted lessons, for a new outlook on the universe and all things relative to it. In this book we learn early on that the author believes that one single force is responsible for everything within our world. Within this book, the author not only explains his belief system but invites the reader to question their world as well. This book is written in easy to understand language that can be applied to young students and older scholars alike. Its simple premise of explaining our universe and how it works makes for contemplative, as well informational reading.

With seven basic and easy to follow chapters the reader is led through explanations for subjects such as gravity, empty space, matter, black holes, magnetic fields, and even how the universe began. These chapters cause the reader to take pause and reconsider options to subjects long taken for granted. This book will both defy and contradict some of the top science texts in the country with its unique take on gravity and in fact, the author even challenges any and all to prove that "gravity is due to objects pulling upon one another." We learn that the author is so sure he knows the truth of gravity that he has requested that unless gravity as described previously can be proven, that all science curriculum needs to be adjusted instead of being taught as it has been for years -a lesson of which he feels has no basis in scientific fact.

Though all of the chapters in "Logical Universe" caused this reader to reconsider lessons taught long ago, I was especially taken with the chapter on `light.' The facts presented and the manner in which they were presented shook this long time educator's scientific foundation. I found myself reading this book, setting it aside and returning to it later to fully appreciate the author's statements. The language, while simple, still can be difficult to digest for those not of a scientific bent, yet this book is easy to put down and come back to when the need arises.

I would encourage any student, educator, parent or casual science aficionado to read this book. While it may not completely convince all readers with its unique look at the universe and what it entails, "Logical Universe" will create enough doubt that one will question the time worn lessons taught in science classes for decades. And as any educator can tell you, questioning is what makes a true scholar. For when we question, we dig deeper and when we dig deeper we learn. And thus it is with "Logical Universe." The reader will dig deeper to find the answer for himself and in doing so learn not just about the universe but about himself in the process..

                5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2006-06-01

Michael Jones, through the theory of origo, has given us a new view of cosmological physics that allows the universe to be understood by the layman as well as the physicist.
His thoughts on gravitational fields allows one to understand how intergalactic travel would be and perhaps is possible now,
A must read for anyone who wants to broaden their cosmological horizons.
                James C. Poe Ph.D.

                1 out of 5 stars Goofy.......2006-05-21

I went to see Michael Jones at a book signing and listened to his one and a half hour presentation. I bought the book and read it. I consider it time I'll never be able to get back. I'll give him credit for being brave and producing a professional looking book and that's the end of the praise that I can offer. He's mildly entertaining and unapologetic in his ignorance of accepted scientific observations and interpretations. When an observation, such as red shifted light spectra, do not agree with his imaginings of how the universe works, he claims that the observations are misinterpreted. He boldly claims that the proton-electron-neutron model of atoms is invalid and says that the Michelson-Morley experiment proves that light is not a wave. Read this book and take it as science fiction if you must but you can't take it seriously.

                    Book Description

This volume contains the proceedings of the conference Logical Foundations of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics-Kurt Gödel's Legacy, held in Gödel's birthplace, Brno, Czech Republic, on the 90th anniversary of his birth. The wide and continuing importance of Gödel's work in the logical foundations of mathematics, computer science, and physics is confirmed by the broad range of speakers who participated in making this gathering a scientific event.

Because of the continued interest and value of the work as a source and inspiration to younger researchers, this volume is being reissued as a co-publication of the Association for Symbolic Logic and A K Peters, Ltd.

                            SUMMARY

In the offered work, unlike the majority of formal theories, the author considers a problem of gravitation with causally consecutive point of view. By logic of researches of known facts and existing theories of this direction, he comes to conclusion about unknown fundamental property of a matter causing the gravitational phenomena. The author's explanation is not difficult to mastering both with causal and quantitative points of view. However, it demands deep changes in accepted beliefs and approaches. On the basis of the offered causal essence of gravitation, the author deduces the law of universal gravitation of Newton; he defines the theoretical value of a gravitational constant and calculates known gravitational effects, with the use of simple mathematical reasoning only. The subsequent results of the offered concept are corresponding with the checked up results of Einstein's general theory of relativity (GTR). However, for planned new experiments, on detection of gravitational waves and gravymagnetic effect, negative results are predicted. The mentioned circumstance may allow judging about value of the offered explanation in a not-far future. Despite of complexities of the studied problem, the book is narrated in a free, polemical style, stipulated for a wide range of readers.

Unconventional decision a problem of gravitation

Many of important questions are shined in this small book, concerning to a problem of gravitation.
The book is stated as detective history in which it is required to find the perpetrator proceeding from established facts. The phenomena of weight and free falling are discussed in it, well familiar to us from our daily life. Physicists while resolutely know nothing about the causal mechanism of an origin of these ordinary phenomena though also they are able to count up precisely enough and quantitatively to describe them.
Many known thinkers worked above this old problem of natural sciences at various times, however, a satisfactory explanation of gravitation has not been found while.
The main distinctive feature of the book consists that the problem of gravitation is investigated and solved in it as a cognitive problem. The author applies usual and clear logic reasoning to a finding of the demanded answer, and not just abstract mathematical operations as it is accepted to do it in modern physics. It is possible to mark for example, that the all gravitational effects are illustrated in the book, known from GTR, but on the basis of easily understood logic reasoning and with application of an elementary mathematics only.
The conceptual inaccuracy and an incredibility of expensive experiments, on detection of "gravitational waves" and "a curvature of a space - time," are shown in it also by the clear image, above which the experimenters work persistently and unsuccessfully many years.
After reading the book to the reader will be obvious an inaccuracy of the concept of "space - time" as kind of physical reality to which the gravitational phenomena were attributed. Author connects the gravitation with the unknown universal property of elementary particles of a matter and on the basis of this concept he counts value of the gravitational constant.
The book takes an average place between physics and philosophies and can interest to the reader having interest to problems of a natural sciences.
From the cognitive and scientific point of view, the book can have huge value as it applies on the opening, having fundamental value.
