Not about coincidence.......2006-02-25

The Wooden Books series is wonderful. This is a beautiful member of the line, but it is about the geometric harmonies of the solar system, not so much about coincidence as such, so I felt a little disappointment.
I have been looking for a book on coincidence. This is not it.

Gimme that Old Time Astronomy.......2005-06-12

One of the things I love about this book is it shows a lil of the old time geocentric view, and if you are looking into things like alchemy, astrology, tarot, sacred geometry and other old timey occult subjects this is gratifying to see. While there is stuff about the heliocentric system, this book seems most interested in showing the beauty and elegance of how the planets relate to each other. There is a big emphasis on the idea -- can things so beautifully proportioned be mere coincidence? I imagine hard line science folks will find this book annoying, and folks of an esoteric/supernatural bent will find it lovely.

My only complaint is the citations for some of the pictures are so durn faint as to be purtnear nonexistent. But hey, the book is thin and only ten bucks, so I'm not gonna kick too hard.

This is a really great little book, a work of art. I like the way John Martineau leaves it to you, the reader, to make up your own mind over what these amazing coincidences mean. The pictures are beautiful. What an incredible place our solar system is. Why dont teachers teach us these things in school??

very disappointing.......2005-03-12

I was looking for a book that provides an alternative, "esoteric" point of view on the solar system. Unfortunately i was completely misled by the table of contents which looked very appealing. In fact the actual contents of each chapter are very small, and sometimes have nothing to do with the title of the chapter! Page after page the author keeps looking for coincidences in ratios between sizes, periods and orbits of the planets. But after 5 pages it becomes very repetitive and boring.

My final impression is that the author has not found an efficient approach to the object he is trying to study. Astrology is probably the efficient approach to better understand our solar system.

I very much like the fact that this book isn't trying to state these coincidences are all part of a grander scheme. It lets us pose that question for ourselves.

The Spiro-graphic orbits - especially that of Venus / Earth are incredible. I must say though, a few of these coincidences are a stretch. Adding and subtracting whole numbers from phi allow many of these to occur, and I cannot see how this can be rationalized. Maybe I didn't understand it correctly, or I'm looking to deep into it.

This book is simple, and poses no views. In my opinion, look at it as interesting cosmic relations and planetary art - but don't look into it much further.

W algebras are nonlinear generalizations of Lie algebras that arise in the context of two-dimensional conformal field theories when one explores higher-spin extensions of the Virasoro algebra. They provide the underlying symmetry algebra of certain string generalizations which allow the extended world sheet gravity. This book presents such gravity theories, concentrating on the algebra of physical operators determined from an analysis of the corresponding BRST cohomology. It develops the representation theory of W algebras needed to extend the standard techniques which were so successful in treating linear algebras. For certain strings corresponding to WN gravity we show that the operator cohomology has a natural geometric model. This result suggests new directions for the study of W geometry.

After reading L.L. Lee's first novel, Taxing Tallula, I looked forward to reading her second one. Lee's sense of humor runs rampant, cleverly mingling with her observations about all the little quirks, faults, and abilities that make us individuals. Like Taxing Tallula, this novel uses an action-packed plot in the most playful ways; any danger remains completely light-hearted and fun. In fact, "fun" describes this novel better than any other word.

When T.J. Marino's mother and three aunts decide they need to visit her in New York City, they embark on a journey of romance, mistaken identities, and family squabbles. What they see often bears little resemblance to what they think they see, but that just adds to the humor.

Imagine an Anne Tyler novel with more action and more plot twists. That might give you some idea of what to expect from The Sisters: Lost in Brooklyn. However, no comparisons can fully illustrate how much you'll enjoy this book; you just need to read it for yourself. L.L. Lee is a unique and incredibly funny writer!
